MBP 15" Battery Suddenly Draining Fast.

Hi.
So my MBP 15" has always had a decent battery, the usual lengths based on average usage.
Today it suddenly started discharging really fast. 10% in 30 minutes when doing nothing but web browsing over wifi with screen at half brightness. It went down 78% this afternoon with just web browsing, a couple of youtube videos and a little bit of music, normally this would not make much of a dent.
(Note, it has gone down 3% just writing this message)
Activity monitor is showing no rogue processes running and spotlight hasn't been indexing.
The Machine is a 15" 2011 MBP 2.0Ghz Core i7, 4GB RAM, High Res display, 720rpm HDD. Running OSX Lion 10.7.2. I'm sure that is more info than you need, but just in case.

Activity Monitor won't show a rogue processes unless you change its "Show" window from the default of "My Processes" to "All Processes" as in this example:
Have you done that?
Do you have the Windows emulator "Parallels" installed. There is an issue with it that can cause the Dock to use 100 percent of the processor cycles. Parallels does not have to be runing for this to happen; the culprit is apparently one of that programs background processes. It can be fixed with a patch provided by the developer here:
http://kb.parallels.com/en/111541
Are you running anti-virus or internet security software? The expensive commercial versions can really drag down performance.

  • Battery suddenly draining fast, phone warm/hot

I've had the phone since December and never had an issue with battery life. It normally lasts all day with no interim charge and I use it on and off all day for Facebook, Yahoomail, texting. Starting this morning, the battery drained to nothing in less than 5 hours and I barely used it. No calls, a little bit of Facebook and maybe one email. I don't have it on push, WiFi is off. I turned it off and on, backed everything up but it's still happening. I have an appointment at the Genius Bar tomorrow but short of restoring it, why is this happening now? I usually charge it overnight and sometimes do an interim charge around 5pm on the way home from work.

Try a phone Reset... press the home and sleep buttons for 5-15 secs until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. You won't lose any data or settings.

  • IOS 8.1 installed yesterday has spoilt my iPad 2! There are no keyboard, message or app sounds, performance is now sluggish, juddery and strange, battery is draining fast and it no longer security locks when put to sleep.

I am so cross because iOS 8.1 installed yesterday has ruined my iPad 2! There are now no keyboard, message or app sounds, performance is slow, juddery and strange, the battery is draining fast and the iPad no longer security locks when put to sleep.  I have checked all the settings, done a number of resets and really wish I hadn't bothered and stayed with iOS 7 when it all worked like a dream.  I thought that by waiting until 8.1, teething problems would have been fixed and I am just horrified that there is no going back!  I am not the only iPad owner that has this set of problems so why didn't you warn us Apple!  What are you going to do to help us?  I do not want to be forced into buying a newer version of iPad because you broke this one!

In spite of the fact that you said you checked the settings, I still believe that you have system sounds muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the control center if you are running iOS 7. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to control center . Tap on the bell icon and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock can be accessed in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

AS for your other issues, have you done any other troubleshooting like resetting your iPad, resetting all settings or doing a complete factory reset?

  • N70 battery suddenly drains in one day

I got my N70 on March 23 2006 (9 months ago). I haven't had the slightest problem with it until now!
All of a sudden it started to drain the battery in just a few hours after being fully charged.
    my F/W version is 3.0546.2.3 18-11-05 RM-84
I bought a new NOKIA authentic battery, checked my charger with no results whatsoever. The most amazing part is that after I removed the new drained battery and put the old drained battery in, I got a full battery indication without recharging it!?!?! Only to show it is drained after just 7 hours...
I am of course going to the nokia service centre but I can't understand what kind of a problem this one is. Does the battery drain faster or something is wrong with the phone's indicator?
    Any thoughts are very welcome!

I would second the firmware update - though depending on your network & how you bought your phone, that may not be available to you.
I would still suggest your nearest Nokia Service Centre though, ask them to take a look at it - it could be a hardware fault somewhere... something shorting etc.
Definitely ask if a firmware update's available though.
What network are you on? And did you buy your phone sim-free or through the network?

  • Iphone 4 battery sometimes drains fast -- problem with Mail app?

My iphone 4 battery often drains too quickly, and I wonder if it has something to do with my Mail App.
When my phone is not playing nice, it drains at least 20% overnight while on Standby, and from 100% to 30% in around 6 hours when I use it during the day. I found a fix (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11775150) that basically says to wipe your mail account and set it up again.
This fix works, but only temporarily for me. I find that I have to keep resetting my mail every few days to get back to "normal battery" where it barely drains overnight. I only use one email account (gmail) -- could there be something going on there?
Oh, and when my battery drains fast, nothing changes when I turn off WiFi, notifications, push, etc. I usually have my mail refresh hourly.
    Has anyone had this experience?

  • IPhone 4 battery still draining fast after ios 5.0.1 update

5.0.1 update did not help, my battery still drains just as fast as it did on 5.0. My phone used to last 2 days no problem, now it lasts about 6 hours, I could go to bed at 5% and wake up with 3%, now if I got to bed with 25% it's dead by morning. I have all iCloud services turned off, only Maps turned on for location services, notifications for Phone, Messages, Reminders, Calendar, CNBC RT and Words Free. I have 2 email accounts, one is a pop3 and the other Exchange, both are set to pull every hour and preview is turned off. Is the issue with notifications? the only thing that has changed from 4 to 5 is I have notifications turned on and my reminders & tasks are synced with Exchange. I'm starting to think the issue is with notifications, I tried to turn off email notifications for the lock screen but they still show up.
Are we getting another update after 5.0.1 soon for the continued battery drain issue?
Email notifications continue to display for locked screen even though the option says Off, is there something else I'm missing?

  • IPhone 4s battery suddenly drained and won't hold a charge

This afternoon the battery on my iPhone 4s suddenly began to show that my battery was drained, then shut off completely and won't charge. I've tried holding down the home button for longer than a minute and I've tried holding down the home button and the power button at the same time but it still won't turn on. I've also tried leaving the phone to charge without touching it. This is my second replacement phone (which means it's my third iPhone 4s) and I only got it in October. It's hard to believe that it's the battery when it's relatively new, but I know that's a possibility. Anyone have any suggestions of what else I should try before I go into the Apple store yet again for a phone issue?

Ok, thanks for that info. Well I know this probably isn't what your going to want to hear, not that it's necassarily bad advice. I would suggest taking your phone into your nearest Apple Store, make an appointment with the Genius Bar first (it will just make things go smoother). The overheating/dying battery thing is a known problem. They'll either send your phone into get fixed, or you'll get a new phone. Just make sure to do a backup (in iTunes) first, as that way you'll have the most recent info to sync to should they replace your phone.
You can also call 1(800)MY-IPHONE. see if they have any ideas, but I think you'll find they'll reccomend the same thing.

  • Iphone 5 battery suddening draining when not in use

Had my iphone 5 for about 3 months and was very pleased with the battery life. But literally out of no where the battery started draining super fast. Dropping 15% in 30 minutes when not in used. Here's the deal...nothing has changed ie locations, email, icloud etc. And quite honestly what is the freaking point of having those things if it drains the battery at unreasonable speeds. So I completely frustrated with Apple for at least not saying "we understand theres and issue and we are working on it." I will never switch cuz I'm an idiot Apple diehard but there have been so many bugs of late it's just frustrating. Also at the same time of the fast drain when I swipe to delete a text the delete button dissapears within one second. Both issues came on at the same time. I'm trying reseting the battery, restoring, unchecking notifications and a bunch of other features which is so stupid... whats the point of having a smart phone if you can't use the features? So I am going to demand a new phone and I know the Apple Genius guys who are so far from genius its pathetic are going to say nothing is wrong with the phone haha, just like the did with the super slow WiFi connections I get...they were completely unaware that there was a problem with iphones and Wifi cuz of course at the Apple Store the Wifi flies when they test it there but of course once you go back to your home or business the Wifi is back to super slow. Wow the things we put up with. Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions please reply.

  • My Lenovo S890 battery suddenly drains in minutes

Just last night I realized that my Lenovo s890 has been shut off due to battery drain from full charge to 0 in minutes...So what I did is to recharge it again and to my amazement, in under 30 minutes it has fully recharged, but when I unplugged it from the charger there's the battery notification display rapidly counting down...I have checked online for general topics on this matter and tried all the suggested tips and solutions but to no avail...My unit is still under 1 year from date of purchase...please help...

I'm surprised and at the same time disappointed that nobody had offered any input to sorts of troubleshooting to somehow give a semblance of solution to my unit"s problem, or perhaps this is a first type of a problem of its kind thus, no one could come up with any clear solution...Anyway, I have done some tinkering while waiting for replies, and I believe I have solved my own problem, and decided to share with you guys for reference if ever you encounter this same problem:
I consulted years-old forums about android phones quick-battery loss problem and picked out potential solutions there such as:
    1. Not using the Facebook app since its using lots of battery juice by posting notifications which come minute after minute; and instead just use the FB in the built-in browsers which consume very little battery juice...
    2. Tried the full battery drain then recharge 10 times, and after 4th recharging, there already is a significant normalization of my battery life, On this 4th recharge, I got full battery by 7am. After 16 hours, its only down to 66%, and that's with a considerable amount of Wi-Fi connectivity.
    3. I also suspected a particular screenshot app as a culprit for the sudden rapid battery drain, as if this app has caused my Lenovo's battery draining behavior to go haywire. Upon uninstalling the app, the draining behavior of my battery gradully returns to normal...
    4. When this rapid battery draining happened, I had the combinations of Lenovo Battery Saver, NQ Power Booster, and Green Power Free apps which I all used to monitor and keep my battery life at check...then after the "incident" I  stopped using the said apps and replaced them eith Super Battery Saver and Juice Defender which were effective when I still have my Lenovo A90, at first there was a semblance of normalization in my battery life but with this screenshot app[which I also uninstalled with the 3 powersaving apps, then re-installed with this 2 replacement battery saving apps] the battery draining was still fast, which continued even after the second uninstalling of the screenshot app. What I did is to uninstall Juice Defender and Super Battery Saver and replace it with Lenovo Battery Saver and Green Power Free but to no avail...Next move: replaced the Lenovo Battery Saver and Green Power Free with Juice Defender  and NQ Power Booster, and upon the said 4th recharging the return to normal battery draining behavior...
The full-drain then recharge 10 times is still on and I'm still monitoring my unit's battery draining behavior...I will be posting updates...

  • Retina mid 2012- battery to drain faster than expected when the lid is closed

    Hi
I was excited to see the battery drain fix today, http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1748?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US.
However I have this issue with a Retina, Mid 2012 machine which the fix has not been released for.
Does anybody know if there will be a fix for other machines?
I have tested with a clean install and even in boot camp i.e. running windows with power cable out, lid closed - battery drains by 30-50% overnight in all tests.
    thanks all
    Dan

You may just need to reset your smc like you did with the MacBook Air. It also may help to reset the PRAM. To reset SMC, shut down machine and plug it into a working power adapter and power source. Locate the shift, control, and option keys on the left side of the keyboard. Hit the power button along with those keys at the same time for about 10 seconds. Your power adapter light will change state which is normal after you release the keys.
To reset PRAM, locate Command, Option, P, and R on your keyboard. As soon as you turn on the machine, press those four keys. It will shut down and start up again and will make the "bong" noise like it does on startup. Hold those keys in for a few more cycles and then let it go. If those didn't do it, you might wanna have it checked out by a technician. Unless you have AppleCare+ you should take it to apple and they'll do it for free but if you don't it really doesn't matter if you go to a genius bar or some computer shop nearby, but make sure they're certified by Apple. Hope this helped!

  • Ios 7.1 battery life drains fast

  • HT4623 my battery is draining faster than normal AND my phone is rebooting on its own.

since i updated to iOS 6, my phone is killing the battery, and i am getting random reboots.  has anyone else experienced this?

Basics from the user manual are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new.  Try these in order until your phone is fixed.

  • Battery keeps on draining fast in iOS 6.1..

battery keeps on draining fast in iOS 6.1.. when my phone was set up as a new phone, battery works fine but after installing some apps and restoring syncing with gmail for my contacts, battery starts draining fast..please help
I dont know what to do now. I have lots of contacts, and the only way to get them is through gmail...please help

The issue is probably specific to your iPhone:
Something may have gone amiss in the upgrade to iOS 6.1.3 on your iPhone.
To correct this follow these steps:
Backup your iPhone using iTunes or iCloud.
Use iTunes to completely restore your iPhone as new.
Setup your iPhone and monitor battery usage to see if it is normal. If not, you may have a hardware problem - if so, contact Apple support.
Restore your iPhone from your backup above.
Check battery usage to confirm that it remains normal.

  • IPhone battery got drained to 0 by low network

My iPhone 4 had abnout 75% battery today. I went in to a place where the wifi and cell phone network was very low but occasionally visible. It had not been connected to the local wifi at all.  In a few hours, I realized my phone was completely dead - drained to 0 and off.  I assume it was because it was trying to get hold of the very low cell phone signal (and/or wifi) - that was way too fast to drain 75% of my battery.   Is this plausible and if so, how do I prevent it?  It's terrible to think that just by going somewhere with poor signal, it can drain my phone super-quickly, for no useful reason (I wasn't trying to use it!), without telling me. Surely there must be a way to disable this?

The magnet in the cover "could" cause lower reception and thus cause the EDGE or 3G antenna to use more power to boost the signal causing the battery to drain faster. It's a known fact that an iPhone will eat through battery in low 3G areas, with 3G on, trying to maintain that 3G connection.

  • IPhone 5 battery still draining after 6.1.2 update

I just upgraded to a brand-new iPhone 5 that had 6.1.1 already installed.  When I got home I updated to 6.1.2 and soon noticed that the battery was draining fast, like I was streaming video or constantly downloading, even when not in use.  Last night I had about 40% battery charge when I went to bed and when I woke up 7 hours later the phone was dead with the battery completely drained.  What is going on?!?

You may want to give Apple Support a call, but here are some things to check first:
    1. Screen brightness
    2. Bluetooth on when not in use
    3. Location services running that's not needed
    4. Push notifications for email accounts
    5. Close running background applications
    6. Use wifi as much as possible instead of cellular
    7. Limit notifications from certain apps like Facebook, Twitter etc.
    Take a look at http://www.apple.com/batteries/
If you limit these and the battery is still draining I'd recommend calling Apple Support or visiting an Apple Store.  Hope this helps.
