MBP 15-inch, Late 2008 - Windows 7 black screen

Specs first:
MacBook Pro 15-inch, Late 2008
OS X 10.8.3 (12D78)
Boot ROM Version:          MBP51.007E.B06
Want to install:
Windows 7 x64 Ultimate (disc)
I needed to format my windows partition because whenever I wanted to boot with bootcamp the screen would just stay black, vmware however worked fine.
So I deleted my partition and ran bootcamp again, created the partition restarted and this is where nothing happened.
My mac restarts, and the screen goes black, after a few minutes the disk stops spinning and then I'm left there indefinitely.
I have tried the iMac fix with copying the driver folder and unattended xml to a dos formatted usb, didn't work.
Resetting pram and smc, didn't work.
Different versions of windows, didn't work.
Both usb and physical media installation, didn't work.
Repaired disk and permissions, didn't work
Also tried creating the partition manually and then booting, still black screen.
I can't seem to find anyone mwith my specific problem. Everyone seem to get to the installations screen, the windows logo or have a blinking cursor. I have nothing, just a black screen.
The really weird part is, that I has worked before. I installed windows 2 years ago but maybe after I upgraded bootcamp or osx or something?
I have been searching for a solution for weeks now without luck.
I really don't know what to do anymore...
Please help...
Regards,
Morten

A user at mac-forums suggested the following:
Backup OS X, wipe the HD, then copy OS X back, partition/resize the HD, either with bootcamp or DU and install Windows and Drivers.
By Backing up I mean, use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable backup, when that is done you can start from the external bootable backup and erase the disk and then the above.
If you want to copy the Recovery Disk as well you need the newer version of CCC or do it manually, CCC if free up until 3.6.7 (But does not have the Recovery clone build in)
Unfortunately that didn't make any difference either..

  • Macbook Pro (Late 2008) - Windows 7 64-bit, Bootcamp 3.1 - Wireless Issue

    Hi Everyone,
I have a Macbook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) model with Snow Leopard and Windows 7 64-bit dual boot. I have done a search and cannot find any reference to this problem on my hardware.
I have had no issues in Windows 7 when using Bootcamp v3.0. In the last week I have upgraded to Bootcamp v3.1. (completed twice, rolled back in between to prove that the issues was related to the Apple Update)
After I update to v3.1, I have issues with my wireless network. The network cannot resolve the name for any internet address. I can connect to wireless networks (tried multiple networks), all the DHCP settings seem to be retrieved correctly (Gateway, DNS etc) and I can ping local and machines outside my network without an issue provided I use the IP address. (Skype works - which uses direct IPs rather than names I have found over time)
As soon as I use a name for a destination for Web traffic, Mail, pinging (any application), my Macbook Pro cannot resolve the address and just bombs out.
If I connect to a wired network, the machine works perfectly and name resolution on that interface works. If I rollback (using Windows 7 rollback capability) to before the v3.1 Bootcamp is installed, the wireless networking also works perfectly.
I noticed this in the support area at apple:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3196
But this refers to wireless issues in Bootcamp drivers prior to v3.1 and on 13 inch Macbook. Wonder if this is a similar issue or related?
Anyone else seen this or point me in the direction of a fix?
    Thanks,
    Thommo

I'm looking into running Windows 7 64bit on the exact same MBP you have, so I'm curious as to whether or not you've found a solution yet outside of the forums.
Do you think it might be that the bootcamp 3.1 update is only for Windows 7 32bit and not for the 64bit version?

The retail dvd I have has a part number: MC223Z/A
    I am currently running 10.5.8
Anyone know what the problem might be?
    Thanks

Perhaps the HDD does not have sufficient room.  It needs a minimum of 5 GB for Snow Leopard.
In all other respects your MBP should be able to install 10.6.
Disk MC223Z/A is the appropriate retail disk.
    Ciao.

  • I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) and am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I would like to know which is the most stable upgrade for my model. I have read some reviews of Maverick and Yosemite making the older macs slower. Is this true?

I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008), Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHz, 4GB Memory. and am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I would like to know which is the most stable upgrade for my model? Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite?
When I had gone to the apple care centre in India a few months ago to upgrade my OSX to Mountain Lion, I was told that considering my macbook pro's specs, upgrading it would just make it less efficient, and that I should stick to Snow Leopard unless I consider buying a newer mac that would benefit from it. Is this true? I find it a bit hard to believe. Which update is most recommended?
I also notice that my mac has gotten considerably slower. While using chrome, it buffers and struggles with even just 5 tabs open. Could this have something to do with my current ios? As a precaution, I have always been making sure I have enough free space on disk i.e around 70 - 100 free out of 250GB.
    Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Mavericks is no longer available from the App Store, so your choice is Yosemite. One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.

  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) suddenly very slow and laggy

This seems to be a popular question so I apologize, but I know there can be a number of issues that cause a computer to run slow, so I want to post my computer's specifics and hopefully someone can diagnose the issue for me without my having to bring it into the store. Thank you in advance.
Specifically my MacBook runs slow when trying to open or close Microsoft Word, iTunes, or access a folder with pictures and short videos in it. Frequently I get they are not responding, or have to close out of everything else in order to get the spinning wheel to go away and sometimes that doesn't even help.
I would just like the computer to be able perform simple commands in a timely manner like it used to. If there is any way I can get back to this I would be eterrrrnally grateful!
    Problem description:
MacBook responds very slow when trying to open applications. Slow, lags, rainbow spinning wheel all the time, even just to open a folder with pictures.

How to I find a compatible, more powerful hard drive for my macbook 13 inch late 2008?

There are many sources for compatible 2.5" laptop SATA interface hard drives and SSD's.
I've used Other World Computing (www.macsales.com) for a number of upgrades, and highly recommend them if you're in the US. OWC also posts helpful videos on YouTube showing step by step removal and installation instructions and the tools required for most Mac models. If your old drive is still functioning, but you're simply running out of space, you might also consider purchasing an upgrade kit that includes an external 2.5" drive enclosure with USB interface. Then you first install the new drive in the external enclosure and 'clone' the contents of old drive to it, then swap the old drive for the new one, and use the old drive in the external enclosure as a backup drive, to test new software and OS upgrades, or to store video, photos, and audio.

  • Macbook 13 inch late 2008 screen not illuminated on one side

    Hi Apple Community,
I need help! My late 2008 13 inch aluminium Macbook screen has 'died' on one side resulting in one side being noticeably dark. The left side has no problems, only the right side.
I am a student living in New Zealand where there is no Apple store in the country I can go to. Local service shop says just to look at it and confirm that one side is dark (which any 2 year old cad identify that it is) will cost a ridiculous $100. Estimated cost will be around $1000 to replace screen.
Has anyone had the same problem and how have you solved it? What is the cost of repair or is there something I can do it help it?
    Macbook specs:
    MacBook, 13inch, Aluminium, Late 2008
Processor: 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 4 GB
    Software: OS X 10.9.4 (Mavericks)
    I do not have AppleCare
    Thanks!

Try these folks at www.usedmac.com.  You may have some luck getting technical help from them by email.  It is more difficult by phone.  You can look through the parts list for what they have in stock for your computer model to get an idea of the prices.  You probably won't need any heavy or large parts so some priority mail  service won't break the bank.  Your problem may simply be a cable but even a back light led or controller circuit board should not be too expensive.  It will require some careful work on your part for replacement.
    good luck.

  • Late 2008 Macbook Pro Screen Flashes Black

Earlier this year I had a problem with the screen of my late 2008 15" Macbook Pro flashing black. The entire screen would flash black for about half a second, then come back on. This would happen maybe once a day or as frequently as once every minute or so.
In January I took it to the Apple store for repairs, at which time they serviced my computer twice (Jan 10-14, Jan 14-15) to fix the problem. Everything was awesome until this month when I started noticing more issues. My battery was "swollen" and the fans were clicking (probably because I was also having over heating issues after upgrading to Lion). Anyway, I take the computer in, the employees at the Genius bar are very helpful, but as we're sitting there looking at my computer--the screen flashes. Not once, but 5 times. I confirmed that the Apple employee saw it and he took it in to get repaired.
I just got it back--they replaced the logic board for the third time, the ODD Super Drive, Optical Cable, battery, and two fans.
......aaannndd my screen just flashed black again. I'm not sure what's going on. Do I have a dud? They also didn't screw in one of the back screws all the way so I have to take it to the store to get it put in (I don't have that tiny of a screw driver). It's really annoying that they didn't put it in all the way, considering it sticks out enough to scratch the surface of any table I'm working on.
Anyway, anyone else continuing to have these issues?

Update: let it rest for ten minutes. Rebooted, I get a grey screen with vertical rainbow colored lines in three places.

  • 2012 13 inch MacBook Pro crashes (black screen) on Windows 7

Hi, I am running Windows 7 (bootcamp obviously) and out of the blue my screen went black, my only option was to make a hard reset. I can then run Windows on Safe Mode, and I found out that if I turn off the graphics card (HD 4000) then Windows will run OK in "normal" mode.
That happened a month ago, and the only thing I could think of was re-installing Windows via Bootcamp. Windows ran flawless until  a couple of days ago where the black screen appeared again and the only way I managed to get into Windows again was either on Safe Mode or in normal mode (with the graphics drivers unabled).
Please help me, I really need to run Windows for work and this is really bothering me.

"Don't think it's the inverter since that helps turn on the backlight on."
Actually the inverter bumps the 5 V. ? from the logic board and bumps it up to high voltage to drive the back light.
    https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/51132/MacBook+inverter+board...how+to+test
Checks you could try would be to check the input voltage to the inverter board. Check the inverter cable for shorts. These are easily seen on close inspection.  If there is a short it could have taken out the tiny fuse that's on the logic board. Or the inverter board itself could be bad. Sub board repairs would require known good replacements. I have identified that fuse but on an earlier model and repaired it after replacing the inverter cable but no tech would go that far.

  • Original capacity of 15 inch Late 2008 MBP

I'm just a little confused as to what the starting capacity of the late 2008 MBP battery is. The battery itself reads that it is at 50 Wh. But, according to Coconut Battery and iStat Pro, the original capacity is 4600 mAh.
I'm debating whether to buy a new battery since my battery has 463 cycles on it, and it's current capacity is at about 4023 mAh. If the battery started with 50 Wh, then I'm right at about 80%, and my battery should be replaced soon, but if it started at 4600, then I'm at about 87%, and it's a-okay.
The battery definitely doesn't last as long as when it was new, but I'm just trying to figure out if buying a new battery will be worth it to me at this point, or if I should give it another 100 cycles, then buy a new one.
    Thanks guys!
P.S. My battery never charges all-the-way to the full holding capacity. The computer always reports that it's charged at 3900 mAh, give or take, which is about 98% of the reported capacity of 4023.

Your model's battery had a maximum capacity of roughly 4.5 hours under the minimum load. Watt-hours is not a capacity measure but a power delivery measure. The capacity measure is 4600 mAh. That is what it was when new. The battery has an expected life of 500 cycles so yours is near the time for replacement. At the point where it is now the battery should power the computer for a maximum of about 4 hours.
