Mbp 15 not starting

This morning I put a lot of new software on my mbp 15''. After that I shut it down and a few hours later attempted to turn it on. It took a very long time to turn on about 3 min. Then I turned it back off and replaced my 512 mb of ram with two 1gb ram cards. Now it wont turn back on. Well it turns on because the little white light in the front is on but it wont actually start up. Any ideas?

thanks I put the original back in and one of the 1gb cards in and it worked. So what does this mean? Can I not use both? and how can I tell if my computer is using the new ram or recognizes it? thanks for you help

  • MBP not starting up past loading apple

I was just about to finish up on my Macbook Pro the other night when it prompted me to reinstall software updates, and after wavering it for a little while I decided it might be a decent idea to finally do it. After about Five minutes of waiting wearily and the updates not progressing as fast as I wanted it to, I shut the lid and went to bed.
When I woke in the morning to check my emails before work, I was confronted by the problem of my MBP not starting up beyond the Apple with the loading thing underneath. I've tried resetting P-RAM, put the install disc in and starting up holding Option, and also holding C.
I can't really think of anything else and it's a hard task for me to take my laptop into town with the monsoon we've been having lately.
    Any suggestions?
    Help is much appreciated,
    Peace.

Not the brightest thing to do while the computer is updating. What did you think would happen? You could have just let it run and gone to bed. Not knowing which updates you are referring to I would hesitate to guess that you now have directory issues or worse. So, your options are:
    1. Run Repair Disk from Disk Utility while booted from your installer disk. If it won't repair the disk;
    2. Use DiskWarrior to rebuild the directory. If that wn't do it;
    3. Do an Erase & Install of the OS.

iMessage for Mac 10.10.2 tries to start all texts as iMessages. I can only SMS text from my MBP if a conversation exists with the party of interest. How can I get my MBP to start a new text message instead of iMessages only?

  • Grey screen, mbp not starting up, flashing sleep light & 3constant beeps

hi there i tried to restart my mbp this am and it would not power up, I get a grey screen, three loud constant beeps and flashing sleep light in time to the beeps!
THe HD sounds as if it is starting up, I hear the whirring then nothing but this annoying been and a stoney grey screen!
    please help!!

Do you have upgraded ram in your MBP? I believe that 3 beep signifies that your computer has failed ram tests on both banks of ram.
Some RAM may appear to pass the Power-On-Self-Test (POST) but still cannot be used by the operating system. In this case, the computer will display a gray screen, sound three tones and blink the power LED on the front of the computer three times, pause, and repeat the blinking until the computer is turned off.
The solution to both of these situations is to first re-seat the memory and test the computer again. If the memory fails the POST test again, try memory that has been verified to work correctly on another system (i.e., "known-good") or order new memory from the Apple Store.

    Hello
Can anyone please let me know how to reset the SMC of my Mac Book Pro 15" (Non removable battery). I have the following constraints

    4. Had there been some charging in the battery, the MBP would turn on and work perfectly fine but it does not gets charged.
In such a scenario? Can I reset the SMC?

  • MBP not starting up... Not a broken HDD, apparently.

My fiancee's MBP suddenly decided not to boot up. We tried everything, and the MBP just doesn't want to see the drive. As a last resort we took the HDD out and connect through a SATA-USB bridge. This boots the MBP up, and of course we Time Machined everything immediately. What's the problem here?
Also as experiment, I put a HDD with Windows installed on it into the SATA slot in the MBP. Funny enough, the MBP recognizes the drive, boot me into Windows, but freezes eventually - which I kinda expected as it was originally used for a PC notebook.
With the original MBP plugged in, my Linux GParted doesn't see the drive either... It is very strange.
We work on ships, and we are at least 4 more months away from vacation. There's no Apple Store in range, and we don't have enough port time to wait anyway. We are quite helpless on this issue. The MBP is 3-yo now, and we don't wanna just ditch it and buy a new one, not to mention it's freaking expensive...
    Sigh.

Just a quick update... After spending a ridiculous amount of money for the taxi ride, we finally got to the Apple Store @ U-Village, Seattle. We booked an appointment in advance, but the earliest available was 10:45AM. We went early anyway, and sure enough, the staff at the store were all friendly and let us move up to 9:45-ish when one of their appointments didn't show up. After some testing, it appeared that it was indeed the cable. With labour the final cost of the whole repair was $56 something. I have to say I am quite satisfied with the overall experience.
Thank you very much again for providing the info, for that I believe it sped up the whole process because they could pinpoint the problem so much quicker. Cheers everyone!

  • New MBP Not Starting

My friend just purchased a new Mac Book Pro. We turned it on fine, I showed him everything and the upload was downloading at the same time. When the upload was complete, we restarted the computer... it stayed at the Apple loading screen and didn't move anywhere from that. The fans were off but then after a few minutes they turned on really high. We literally just opened it today.
What could be wrong? How often does a defected one come up? We restarted it a few times and the same happened over and over again. Unplugged all devices etc.
    Cheers,
    Bijan

Just phone the Apple support line.
    They will get you to:
    1. Reset the PRAM/NVRAM
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
    2. Then they will get you to reset the SMC.

If its any consolation, I had to return my MacBookPro recently for a replacement. The new one is arriving tommorow/Monday.
    Fingers crossed.

  • MBP will not start, only has 99Mb free

Hello, I am trying to fix a friends Macbook Pro, which will not start. The logo appears with the spinning cog, but nothing else - it can stay on this screen for hours. I tried to reinstall Tiger, and then discovered that it only has 99Mb free, and Tiger needs more space.
I can access Terminal, but I am not familiar with UNIX to be able to do anything there. Is there a way of accessing the hard disk via my own iMac or wife's MBP through Firewire so we can delete something. I guess Target mode will not work, as there is not enough space to start the OS. Any help appreciated.
Our friends MBP is one of the original, 1.8Ghz Core Duo with 512Mb RAM.

The computer will probably still boot up in TD mode, Simon, even though it can't boot the Mac.
When used as the boot disk the computer needs plenty of free space to set up virtual memory areas and the like. That is one of the reasons why you should always make sure that there are always quite a few Gigabytes free for safe operation (Never let it get below 10% free space and try to maintain around 20% or more if, for example, you ever burn video, or other very large files).
TD mode essentially turns the computer into just another external HD, and the process occurs before it really needs to make use of the internal drive in the boot cycle.
So give it a go (just hold down "t" while starting the MBP). Your iMac should then see it as a second, external, HD.
Don't try and install any OS until you have cleared LOTS of space - 50 Gig or more in a situation like this where many of the files themselves will have become badly fragmented (because the normal OSX processes for defragging can't operate when a drive gets this full) . In fact I'd STRONGLY suggest that you back up or clone the entire drive to an external, or to another computer, wipe the internal, and only then start putting things back on. Otherwise you will have horrendous levels of free space fragmentation.
    Cheers

  • Mbp 15" does not start from set up disk

I formatted my MBP because it did not recognize the monitor, had to attach an extermal one to view image.  Now, I cannot install the original OS because it does not start from set up disk.  I was using OSX Lion latest version

Formatting the entire drive was rather excessive to solve a external monitor issue.
Likely a PRAM or SMC reset would have cleared it.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
10.7 Lion can only be reinstalled via the Recovery HD partition or via a external Recovery USB made in advance.
Hopefully the Recovery HD partition is still availalbe, hold the command and r keys down while booting (with a actve Internet connection cable attached to the router or modem) and see what happens. If you get something then format the Macinstosh HD partition in Disk Utility (GUID, OS X extended journaled) and quit, reinstall 10.7 from Apple's servers with your AppleID and password.

    http://osxdaily.com/2011/08/08/lion-recovery-disk-assistant-tool-makes-external- lion-boot-recovery-drives/
If not, then hold c or option key and boot from the 10.6 installer disk, use Disk Utility to erase the entire drive on the left and format same (GUID, OS X extended journaled) then quit and install 10.6, then log into AppStore and update to 10.7 again, the Recovery HD partition will be reinstalled automatically.

  • My MBP will not start up after restart

My MBP (late 2011 running 10.8.something - receintly updated) will not start up after I had to do a restart to install Blackberry Desktop software (for my wife, I promise).  It chimes, gets past the grey screen with the Apple logo and then just sits on the login screen but with the background only, no account or anything.  My mouse pointer is there and moves but nothing else.  Anyone have any idea?

Reboot holding the Shift key down on a wired or built in keyboard, this is Safe Mode and will disable the at boot kernel extension file that Blackberry installed.
When you get in uninstall the software using their uninstaller. Then reboot normally again, visit their website for a update if there is one.
Blackberry/RIM software has been causing issues around here lately.
If your machine refuses to boot normally again, then run through this list 1-8,, by #8 your machine should be booting normally again.

  • MBP 2011 Not starting up

    Hi all,
Are there any known issues for Macbook Pros not starting up? I spilled liquid on it a few weeks ago, but all was fine until now it won't switch on at all even when plugged in to the mains.
I'm worried this will cost the world to repair & I can't afford it currently, but worried it will deteriorate the longer I leave it.
Any advice would be great, even if it's just a repair shop for a reasonable quote.
    Thanks!

    tessabella,
If you've an Apple Store nearby, they should be able to give you a free diagnosis and estimate for repair.
Unfortunately, the liquid sensors will likely be tripped and they will suggest that you replace the logic board, which can be quite expensive.
    Good luck,

I have a MacBook pro that has power issues and will not start but the hardrive is fine.  I do not want to lose all of my files so I was wondering if it's possible to transfer my hardrive from a older Macbook pro to a new one if I were to purchase a new one?  Also, the software is not updated as the computer hasn't worked for about 2 months.
Also, if it is possible to transfer the hardrive, would my iTunes music transfer as well?  It is not saved in the cloud.
Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.

You computer is probably perfectly repairable, but if you want a new one anyway, it is perfectly possible to transfer the data from the faulty one.
But it would be a mistake to simply put the old HD in the new computer.
    These are the steps:
Remove Hard drive from faulty computer. (very easy on Unibody MBPs, do-able but not so easy on older MBPs)
Put it in a cheap enclosure
    Connect it the new computer
    Boot up new computer.
If the new computer has never been run before the Setup Assistant will ask if you want to import your apps, data, settings etc from either another mac, another HD connected to the Mac or a Time Machine back up.
Obviously chose the second option (another HD connected to this Mac) and follow prompts.
If the new computer has already been run (so Setup Assistant doesn't run when you boot it up), you will need to use Migration Assistant...or run the installer again so that Setup Assistant runs again.
