MBP 17" early 2011 keeps freezing randomly

Hello everybody. Im stumbling about an issue after upgrading to Mountain Lion two days ago. The MBP freezes in as far that the spinning disk is showing, the cursor still can be moved around, though I can't get to force quit (not to the Apple nor through the option, alt escape key combiniation). The only thing which will make it work again is to hold down the power button to force a complete shut doown. At the time it happens I'm having Mail running in the background and am using Safari. Anybody else experiencing this? Any ideas of what to do about it?  Many thanks for your help

Start up in Safe Mode by powering on the mac while also holding down the 'shift' key until you see the Apple logo with a progress bar underneath it.
When you see the progress bar, let go of the 'shift' key. Log in to your normal account when you get the login screen.
Remove everything from here:
 > System Preferences... Users & Groups | Login Items
Restart the computer normally and test for the problem.

  • My MacBook Pro (Early 2011) keeps freezing, the fan becomes extremely loud and the laptop gets very hot, what can I do?

    Hi there,
I would be grateful if any one could help me. I purchased my MacBook Pro  13 Inch in August 2011, it was the "Early 2011" version, which was shipped with Lion (I have now upgraded it to Mountain Lion last year).
Up until a few weeks ago, it was running fine. But recently my MacBook keeps freezing (A circular rainbow appears on the cursor), slowing down, the fan gets very loud and I often have to restart the whole machine. This usually happens when I'm running programs such as Safari, Preview or Microsoft Word
I only use my MacBook for university work so I only have Microsoft Office and iWork installed, nothing else. I've only used 19gb out of the 320gb available. I've also reseted my MacBook to its factory settings but that hasn't fixed the problem.
I've checked my AppleCare status and it says:
    Repairs and Service Coverage: Active
Your product is covered for eligible hardware repairs and service under a custom agreement.
For more information about your coverage, please contact us.
Estimated Expiration Date: 24 August 2014
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions to how I can resolve these problems, as it is stopping me from doing my work?
    Many thanks.

Call Apple and make a appointment, backup your use data off the machine to a external drive.
Don't bother with TimeMachine if it asks, too long and likley be corrupted and unable to restore, just drag and drop your Users folder to the external drive.

    Hi,

Be careful with AppleJack as it does not repair permissions with Lion and is reportedly completely broken under Mountain Lion.
I would concur that Avast is involved in this issue and probably needs to be reinstalled or replaced by something less "intrusive".

  • MBP 15" early 2011 with WDC VelociRaptor?

I notice that there is a thread for MBP 15" early 2011 with SSD https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2775423 But, I can't afford that type of SSD with only that capacity, i.e. 250GB. Here, in town, it would cost nearly USD500.
So, I'm start to thinking to choose WDC VelociRaptor 2,5" 10000rpm 600GB SATA III 6GB/s WD6000BLHX http://www.amazon.com/600GB-Sata-6GB-2-5-HD/dp/B003G4I5OA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid =1303127766&sr=8-2 which only USD300 with more than 2 times capacity of SSD 510.
I already used VelociRaptor 3,5" 10000rpm 300GB SATA II 3GB/s WD3000HLFS  on my PC and it is producing excessive heat, so that I should turning on the HDD fan which has 2500rpm.
The question is: will it produce an excessive heat also? since MBP 15" body is aluminum unibody that is perfect conductor to transfer heat. I saw iFixIt website tear it down piece per piece. So, I think it still do able. But is it compatible also?
    thanks.

    Hi n,
I would continue working with AppleCare, because if it turns out to be a hardware issue, you'll want to get it repaired while still under warranty.
Have they suggested/have you done a reinstall of the OS yet?

  • HT201343 My MBP is Early 2011 but dunno why cant use mirroring with apple TV, the icon cannot be found

My MBP is Early 2011 but dunno why cant use mirroring with apple TV, the icon cannot be found. So cannot use mirroring.
I have follow trouble shooting , they recommend to go system preference -> display , thus can find out the mirroring icon if no mean it doesnt support. But according to the web, Early 2011 MBP should be able to use, dunno why.

Just realise I havent updated my OS to mountain lion and this is the reason why I cannot use mirroring before ^^
    Thanks all

  • OS X Lion Screen Sharing Slow on MBP 13" (Early 2011)

    Hello All,
I've been cruising forums and various posts, but have not seen anything directly relating to the issue I'm having. I just upgraded all my Macs to Lion and when I screen share(SS) from my lion macs at work to my lion macs at home there has been a notable drop in performance.
Here's where it get's stupid though. I can screen share to my Mini with very little to no lag at all from my MacBook Air at work. The Mini is directly hooked to my  time capsule (2008,1TB). However, when I SS into my MBP 13" early 2011(wireless connection) the MBP becomes almost completely unresponsive or delayed to any change by 5+min.
I tried ss'ing into my mini and then from my mini to my MBP 13" and that was at least responsive, but obviously laggy. So what the frick man. Why can't I SS into my MBP from work? This was never an issue when all these macs were running 10.6.8.
I guess I should also mention that the Mini hasn't been able to update ARD 3.5 yet, because of a separate issue that I haven't gotten around to. Is it perhaps the ARD update that is screwing up my MBP13"?
    Suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem. I think it has to do with the 'server' computer. When I remotely control my other snow leopard computers, it is snappy. When I connect to my iMac running Lion, it is slow. The whole page blinks like it is rendering all text/images/backgrounds all the time. So it seems to be loading the entire frame. On the contrary, when remoted into a Snow Leopard machine, only the word or area that you are typing is blurry, then crisp as it renders. It doesn't try to reload the whole screen since you are only modifying a small portion of it.

  • My windows 7 keeps freezing randomly

Hi I know there were similar questions asked, but I already tried some things like registry cleaning software, and freezing still keeps comming back so I feel like I need a specific and interactive help.
So my windows freezes from time to time, today it was every couple minutes while browsing internet through firefox mostly, and single freeze takes from several seconds to minutes.
Right here for a similar problem I've found suggestion to collect minidump files:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/b9c932b4-5926-4f92-b186-c4f90bb86583/windows-7-keeps-freezing-randomly?forum=w7itproperf
I can do it too, if there is someone here to listen :) and will further help me continue solving this. Thanks.
    Tom

Ok, so I got some freezes just moments ago and went to collect minidump files. When I tried this:
Click “Start”, type “%SystemRoot%\Minidump" (without quotation marks) in “Search” bar and press “Enter”.
    ...it found no elements matching.
Yesterday I've done everything like suggested here:
    1. Click "Start", input "SYSDM.CPL" (without quotation marks) in the “Search” bar and press “Enter”.
    2. Switch to the "Advanced" tab and click the "Settings" button under "Startup and Recovery".
    3. Under "Write debugging information" section, make sure the "Small memory dump (128KB)" option is selected.
    4. Make sure "%SystemRoot%\Minidump" is in the "Small dump directory" open box and click “OK”.
...except where it sais 128kb I had only option 256kb
so what is going on?  no minidump folder under my windows folder...

  • Lion to Snow Leopard MBP 13 Early 2011

    GDay guys,
ive bought an used mbp 13 early 2011 and on the recovery hdd is only osx 10.7.5 but ive seen on the apple site that the mbp 13 early 2011 was deliveried with osx 10.6.
is it possible to downgrade or reinstall to snow leopard?
can i download snow leopard anywhere for free or do i have to buy it?

Depends on what version of Snow Leopard came with the computer. Snow Leopard is only available as 10.6.3 on the retail discs. Newer models cannot boot from that version. You would need the original discs which you can purchase from Apple Customer Service.
Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 or visit online Help for more information.
To contact product and tech support: Apple - Support - Contact Apple Support.
For Mac App Store: Apple - Support - Mac App Store.
For iTunes: Apple - Support - iTunes.
There is no "downgrading." You will have to erase the drive and install Snow Leopard from scratch or create a separate, new partition on the drive on which to install Snow Leopard.

  • Static electric feeling near palm rests on MBP 13" early 2011

i just purchased a MBP 13" early 2011 less than a week ago. when i unplugged the magsafe power connector after full charged, i get this static electric feeling near the palm rest edges (both left and right wrist area). but when i plugged in the magsafe power connector (even though it full charged) I do not get this electro-feeling anymore. is it something wrong with my new MBP 13" ? Should I send in Apple Care Centre for another new set exchange?

I would take it to an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider  (AASP) for evaluation, or call your nearest Apple Contact Center. Visit the Genius Bar at the Apple Retail Store,  make a reservation.

  • Should I Sleep/Shut Down my Mbp 13" Early 2011 while travelling with motorcycles

    Hi
I used Mbp pro Early 2011
Everyday I travel a lot with motorcycle and always take my Mbp with me  ..
    My questions:
    1. What is the best thing to do if I often carry my Mbp on a motorcycle?
    2. Should I sleep/shutdown my Mbp while riding my bike?
    3. Is it okay if I often shutdown my Mbp or it will decrease the battery life?
I usually shutdown my Mbp each time I'm on the road with bike .. I'm afraid if I just put on sleep it will damage the Mbp because there's a lot of shock happening when you ride a bike
    Need advice
    Thanks

Hi thanks for your reply but can you be more specific .. I am new with apple thing
Is it okay if I often shutdown the Mbp (2 or 3 times a day) ?.. I travel a lot

  • MBP 15" early 2011 (MacBookPro8,2) - freeze and 3 beeps after normal boot

    Good day.
Month ago I upgraded memory in my MBP early 2011. I bought 2 banks of 4GB Hynix 1333 Mhz(MBP had 2x2GB Hynix banks), installed them and got the first hard freeze with 3 beeps right on the login screen. Since then I got somethink like 15-20 freezes with intervals from 3-4 hours to 1 week and total silence in logs and diagnostic reports.
Note: it boots fine, and freeze occurs during work.
I'm sure it's not a RAM issue because it was tested countless times with AHT, Rember, memtest runned from single user boot, even ASD — all tests passed.
I tried to reproduce the error using Prime95 stress tests, but with no luck — MBP successfully passed 6 hours stress test under 100% CPU and RAM load.
Today MBP freezed 2 times with locked screen and without user activity. Any suggestions?
    Additional info:
    dmesg - https://gist.github.com/7d3804d11bef38090345
latest log entries right before freeze - https://gist.github.com/c66eaa8c3b08c08c6656
P.S. I'm from Russia, so we don't have AppleCare, only AASPs without needed replacement parts. Also they asks for valid proof of purchase and don't care about Apple ID, serials and stuff.

    yumitsu,
3 beeps MEANS its a RAM problem or RAM related problem. There is no doubt about this. Make sure RAM is seated properly. Reseat it if necessary. Also make sure that the DIMM slots don't feel loose as a slight jolt is probably enough to dislodge RAM and make your machine expererience these issues.
Have you tried putting back the original 2 x 2GB RAM that originally shipped with your machine back? If everything starts working normally with the original RAM, then you isolated the issue to the 2 x 4GB Hynix RAM.

  • MBP 2011 keeps freezing after a terrible incident.

Okay, so today while I was walking, my laptop bag accidentally bumped into a wall. It was not a hard hit, yet hard enough for me to notice it.
Afterwards I used the computer for studying, only using Chrome and Word. Later this evening I used it again, same programs, and while I was in Chrome it just froze. It looked like dead pixles was all over the screen, and the screen was divided in 2 parts, one bigger than the other. (I have pictures of it if that will help).
I turned it off, pressing down the power button and rebooted. Same problem a bit after startup. I checked the system log, and it reports this at the time of the freeze: error: gpu_watchdog_thread.cc(253) The GPU process hung. Terminating after 10000 ms. Everytime the computer freezes I get the same message in the log.
So, what's up with this? It seems to happen everytime I use Chrome, for some reason, and the computer turns very hot with fans blasting. Right now I'm in safe mode using Safari, and it hasn't happened as of yet.
Here's the result of my EtreCheck:
Thank you so much in advance for helping out!
    William

Can I perform a hardware check without it?
Maybe.  Try starting your MBP with the OPTION+D keys held down.  This may not work.
If not, download from Kelly computing Rember and run it overnight to get enough loops in the RAM test.
    http://www.kelleycomputing.net/rember/
It is in your best interest to get replacement installation disks.  They can be purchased from Apple Customer Relations.  You must provide them with the serial number of the MBP and there is a charge.
With these, you can run the Apple Hardware Test and repair the internal HDD of your MBP (as I wanted you to do earlier).
    Ciao.

  • Macbook Pro 2011 keeps freezing and disconnecting from internet

Ever since I upgraded to 10.8 Mountain Lion, my macbook has been acting up and its becoming a real big hassle.
The first big issue is it keeps freezing. Everything freezes, the only thing I can do is move my mouse cursor around but I can't open anything, everything just becomes frozen. Whenever this happens I have to hard reset my macbook and turn it on again all the time. This occurs between an hour of use to 3 days of use, its always random.
My 2nd issue is my airport keeps disconnecting, It doesn't show that its disconnected but I can never connect to anything or open any pages on google chrome or safari.
Can anyone figure out whats the source of this issue? I took it into the genius bar and they weren't even sure either, but then again they didn't do a thorough investigation they just quickly looked at it because I was runnnig short on time.

Been having the same problem since I upgraded to Mountain Lion - MBP (2011) crashing at least twice a day. I noticed that it's Chrome that crashes first, so I'm using Safari for now, so lets see if it makes any difference.

  • Silverlight (Lovefilm / Netflix) MBP 13" Early 2011, Heating and Exhaust Problems, Clamshell mode with TB Display

    Hi all
I was hoping if someone can help me out...
    I have a:
    Mac Book Pro 13" (Early 2011) (i5, Crucial 8GB RAM, 120 OWC 6G SSD)
    Apple Thunderbolt Display
I run my MBP in clamshell mode always.
Whenever i run Netflix or Lovefilm video in full screen using either Firefox, Chrome or Safari. The Silverlight plug-in is hogging the CPU.
My exhaust (CPU fan) goes crazy, its soo loud its annoying while your trying to watch a movie on your Thunderbolt Display.
    Temperature reaches: 83 Celsius
    Fan (Exhaust): 5620 - 6200 RPM (immediately jumps from 2001 to 5620 / 6200)
If i watch a movie full screen on my 13" MBP with my Thunderbolt display disconnected:
    Temperature reaches:  81 Celsius
Fan (Exhaust): 3198 RPM (it slowly crawls up form 1998 to 3193)
Now i changed my resolution on my Thunderbolt disply to 1420x720 and it helps with the fans going crazy, they slow down slightly...
I've tried a PRAM and SMC Reset, all my firmware is up to date.
My Macbook Pro is slightly raised at the back so air can flow through the vents.
My FANS are just going crazy!! something is ridicously heating up internally in my machine causing them to go mental.
You just cannot watch a movie on netflix or lovefilm on your thunderbolt display comfortably if your fans go beyound 2800RPM.
I even installed Windows 7 on Virtual Box and tried running lovefilm / silverlight and it did not help my problem.
PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP! how can i keep my fans below 2800 RPM while running silverlight?!?!

Flash like Silverlight are CPU heavy applications.
The MacBook Pro can be run in clamshell mode but only when not running extremely CPU intensive tasks
    like what you are doing.
If you keep the mac book running this way for too long you might stress the materials and run into danger of getting thermal damages.
Chrome is actually in recent time getting very slow and I noticed in a comparision test that Firefox provides me up to 30 to 40% more free CPU time.
If running netflix I would suggest currently NOT using Chrome.
Windows 7 virtualized inside virtual box and then on top netflix is uhm a pretty bad idea because all those three things together are already CPU hogs.
