MBP 17" is your keyboard dropping keystrokes and locking up?
I have found it very frustrating to use my macbook pro to type anything.
There are four symptoms that I am experiencing:
*1. while typing, randomly certain letters will temporarily fail to respond, causing misspelled words.*
*2. while typing, at random, certain letters will get in a "stuck down" state and repeat several times until the key is pressed repeatedly*
*3. The white eject emblem appears on screen at random a few times. If I have a disc in the drive, it ejects as if something is pressing the eject button but nothing is pressing it.*
*4. Shortly after #3, the keyboard and trackpad will completely lock up and the computer must be left off for a period of time before the keyboard and trackpad will work again.*
If anyone else with a MBP 17" has these issues can you please reply to this thread?
Thanks
I took my macbook pro to the local apple store at La Encantada. There, a technician had no luck reproducing the problem I was having. I was very clear when i dropped off the laptop that the problem only occurs once the laptop heats up. After a tech had called me saying "no problem found" I was disappointed and I had to make a genius bar appointment the next day to have a technician look at it with me. Within 5 or 6 minutes of just opening safari and browsing the web I had the keyboard locked up again. Why is it that they could not accomplish in 48 hours of bench testing and diagnostics what I did in a few minutes?
I have a theory. The bench surface where I was seated at the genius bar is made of wood. It is more thermally insulating and must have trapped the heat beneath the laptop better than whatever they were using in the back. If you move the laptop to a different spot on the genius bar, you can feel the warmth on the wood of where it once sat. Not only this, but when the apple technician moved the laptop, the keyboard magically un-froze and it was working again for a few minutes. I asked him to hear me out and requested that he not move the laptop again, stating to him that once the bench beneath the laptop warmed up, the keyboard would freeze again. And within 2 or 3 minutes it did freeze again. I told him about the hardware disconnect noise and the freeze that also occurs in XP in the hopes that he would be convinced that it's not a software problem.
Now that he's actually seen the problem and could confirm my initial suspicions, he has gone ahead and ordered a new top cover. I am not sure if this includes a new keyboard and trackpad or if he will simply transplant my old one over to the new case top cover. I honestly can't believe that just a peice of metal alone was the cause of the problem.
Either way, before he calls me to pick up the laptop I hope he puts it up on the genius bar again for a few minutes to see if the problem persists. Whatever conditions they have back in that tech shop don't seem to be conducive to reproducing these kinds of thermal failures. Maybe their work benches are metal or too thermally-conductive?
I will post another update when I get to go see or retrieve my macbook pro.

When I opened my ipad cover the keyboard was up and locked so no other screen is accessible. It was not up when I closed it earlier. How do I get the keyboard unlocked and down?
You could press the keyboard down button (shown bellow), or hold it if its not going down. OR Hold the power button for about 8 seconds until it asks you if you want to reset (slide to unlock). OR switch the little switch located on the side of your ipad (shown Below)

Macbook airport connection drops and locks my computer
So... I think my problem tops them all. Ive done alot of searching and ive found no topic relative to mine.
- My intel macbook has an airport extreme that can succesfully connect to my schools network or my girlfriends network or my network at home. However...
Many times a day... as soon as i make my connection active by going on a web browser.
My Airport drops connection and locks my computer... only the mouse is avaliable, but
anything else i try to click.. i end up with the spinning beach ball. Only solution i can find
thus far is to force shutdown my computer and restart... Now i cant do a PRAM reset or
start up in safe mode. I dont know how to solve this...
Can anyone help me with this? It is incredibly annoying as i have to force shutdown my computer over 6 times a day which is... bad ... for my computer. More bad clusters.
Thanks much ... GMy problem is a variation on yours.
I don't lose the airport connection at all. I can connect to my Airport Extreme base station and surf the Internet without a any hassle. I can see the other computers connected to said AEBS. Network drives are mountable.
HOWEVER, as soon as I start to transfer a file or folder from or to a mounted network drive, the transfer hangs. The only solution is to power-off Airport to get the Mac to acknowledge losing connection to the network drive. Otherwise I would continue to stare enlessly at a frozen progress bar.
Hopefully 10.5.2 will address the issue. -
MBP 13" backlight keyboard goes on and off
I've owned a MBP 13" for over 5 months now and recently i noticed that it's backlight keyboard goes on an off all the time. when i try to adjust the keyboard light it doesn't respond, the sign appears in the screen but all in gray.
my MacBook Pro, Model Identifier: MacBookPro7,1, Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo, Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
Any thoughts ?
many thanksBoeing
Try resetting the PRAM. Shutdown the computer, with your left hand hold down the option+command keys. Power the computer on and immediately wiht your right hand hold down the P key wiht your little finger and with your index finger hold down the R key, wait until your hear the Apple chime twice release al keys and let the machine bootup. If that doesn't work I would suggest taking the computer to an Apple store ASAP and have a Genius address the issue. Hope this helps!

What do you do when your keyboard stops working on your MBP?
Turned my MBP on this morning only to find I was unable to open any of my files. After finding this out, I restarted it and now my keyboard won't work. It is stuck on the sign in page and the only button that is working is the power button. But the power button won't let me turn it off. Help!!
evans_re,
does the trackpad not work? If it works, you could try selecting “Shut Down…” from the Apple menu.
As a last resort, you can hold down the power button for approximately ten seconds, which should force a (non-clean) shutdown.
If your keyboard is completely non-functional (excepting the power button), then you should take it to an Apple store or other qualified service facility. -

MBP bricked after servicing - Keyboard disconnected
Sorry ahead of time for the long story, but I appreciate any help and suggestions on what I could do about this.
A few months ago (back in march) I had spilled a little bit of liquid on my 15inch mbp. The small spill area was on the bottom right hand part of the mbp and a little bit had gone into the arrow keys/bottom of the speaker. I turned off the computer and wiped off the liquid and waited to turn it back on. There appeared to be no damage done to the computer aside from a slightly sticky arrow key, but a week or two later the computer started turning off by itself randomly (with and without the power cord plugged in). My brother had had this problem with his mbp (due to the battery, and after having the battery replaced his was fine), and after reading many of the discussion forums was led to believe that it was just a battery issue. I called apple support and told them the problem and they said it was probably the battery, but since I was unable to make the computer turn off by itself by doing what they told me, they told me that I could either have them send out a new battery or see if it would stop turning off by itself, and if it did it again to just call them back. Since I was still in school at the time I decided not to deal with the hassle of continuing to talk to customer service so I elected to just wait and see if it happened again (back choice on my part).
A week went by without it turning off but eventually it did, so I called apple support again to take up the offer of having a new battery sent out, except this time instead of being offered the new battery, I was told to go through the tests again to try and make the computer shut off (once again the tests were unsuccessful), and was then told that I would have to send the computer in so that they could see what was wrong with it. After trying to tell them that the week before I was told it was just a battery issue, I gave in and agreed to send in the computer since I had no real need for it since I only had a few weeks left in the semester and none of my classes required computer work. Up to this point customer service had been relatively helpful and seemed to want to help me out with my problems, but here's where everything went wrong. Keep in mind that at this point the computer is perfectly fine aside from randomly turning off, a minor and inconvenient annoyance.
I got the box they sent out to ship my mbp in, and I sent it away to be repaired. A few days later after they received it I got a call from them saying that they would be unable to repair it for free since they found evidence of liquid damage on, I believe what they said was, the motherboard, keyboard, speakers, optical disk drive, and power supply. Now I was dumbfounded on how the little bit of liquid that I spilled could've managed to cause all that damage, especially since it seemed like had there been 'damage' on all those parts there would be a bigger problem then just randomly turning off. Their estimate for repairing the computer was around $1250. Since the computer was still completely useable when I shipped it off, I asked if any of those damages would really affect the computer, and the lady I was speaking to at the time told me "no, but it will most likely eventually die." I figured it would come back in a useable condition, and since I was told there would be no real issue with it, I elected to not have it repaired and told them to send it back.
A few days later I get my mbp back, and excited to have it back I open it up and hit the power button but it wouldn't turn on. I figured the battery must be dead so I plugged it in and hit the power button again, and once again it didn't turn on. Since it was late, I decided that I'd call customer service once again the next day. When I was sleeping that night and the mbp was closed, I heard the chime it plays when it turns on, which woke me up and I looked over and saw the glowing apple. I went back to sleep and when I woke up in the morning the computer was still on. I opened it up and saw the screen saver up, so I touched the trackpad to wake it up but that didnt work either. I tried to turn it off with the power button but it didn't work, so I took out the battery and put it back in which shut the computer off and then it turned back on. The computer seemed like it was booting up normally, and then a totally different desktop popped up with PhoenixCE running (their diagnostic program). The keyboard did not work at all so I called customer service, told them the problem, they told me I just needed to reinstall the OS. I asked about the keyboard not working at all and that I couldn't control when the computer turned on and off other than taking out and putting back in the battery, and they told me that it would be fixed by reinstalling the OS, which I thought was kind of odd, but ignored it. They sent out the OS discs since I didn't have mine with me, and I put the discs in, but was unable to do anything with it because the keyboard didn't work. I went and borrowed a usb keyboard and mouse from my neighbors which both worked fine with the computer and attempted to reinstall the OS, but apple had partitioned the HD into two segments both less than 3 gb so there was not enough space to install the OS. I called customer service again and told them the new problem, and I was told that there was nothing they could do about it. I was dumbfounded by how I could send in a relatively fine working computer to a repair center, and have it sent back in worse (NON-WORKING) condition. Naturally I asked this and the guy I was speaking to kept implying that it was my fault that they sent the computer back to me in non-working condition. Eventually I hung up out of frustration. After trying to figure out how to get my HD back, I had clicked on some buttons and after clicking on ok for some button (I don't remember what it was, real smart, I know) the computer shut off. Unable to figure out what happened I figured the computer was completely dead. I had no way to to turn the computer on and off, removing the battery and putting it back in no longer worked, and the keyboard was still out of commission. I was now computer-less and had to go out and buy a new computer because of all this. I got a new mbp because I liked my old one so much.
Here's the kicker, last night a friend and I decided to take apart the "broken" mbp to see if we could salvage anything from it. After following directions on how to take it apart, and noticing that you're supposed to be careful removing the top part of the case/keyboard because of the ribbon attaching the keyboard to the motherboard, we looked and conveniently, the reason why the keyboard didn't work, was because they never reattached the keyboard. They never once suggested that this could've been a cause for the keyboard not working. To top it off, the "liquid damage" that they said was on everything, could only be found on the metal casing of the optical drive, a place were it most likely did not cause any damage, and slightly on the protective tape that covers the back of the keyboard. Cleaned off those two areas (looks good as new), reattached the keyboard, and like magic we were able to turn on and off the computer. We figured out how to reset the HD and reinstalled the OS, and the computer worked completely fine. It's been on all day today without a single problem so far (waiting to see if it'll turn off by itself at all). The whole process of fixing the computer took maybe 10 minutes (longer if you include the time it took to reinstall the OS) and they wanted around $1250?
I went out and bought a brand new computer because of this whole ordeal, thinking that my original mbp was dead. Is there anything I can do to get some sort of reimbursement? I unnecessarily went out and bought a new computer, because they sent mine back in non-working condition when it worked when I sent it in, and implied that it was my fault. Does anyone know apple's policy for any sort of situation like this? Is there some sort of way to file a complaint? I don't really know to do, but I'm $2000 down the hole because I thought I needed to buy a mbp when I didn't need to buy a new one. Thanks for any help ahead of time, and sorry for the long story.Since this is a user-to-user forum nobody here is going to be able to give you a definitive answer. You could call Apple Customer Service and see if you could return the new computer, which would be the simplest solution.
Your keyboard cable may have been disconnected and not reconnected by a service technician, or could have dislodged during shipping, but I seriously doubt it was related to your "minor" problem of the computer turning itself off. That would indicate a major issue that would only get worse with time. I also think you may be understating the amount of liquid that went into the computer, but remember that ANY amount of liquid is bad for a computer. I've opened countless laptops and iPods where the person spilled just a little liquid, or only dropped it into water for a minute and each time there was evidence of a considerable amount of liquid in the computer.
A call to customer service might solve your issue:

Keyboard, Trackpad, Mouse and USB ports - Not Responding
Hello,
Here is my problem. Today when I started my MBP, there was no keyboard, no mouse(USB), no trackpad, no USB ports. I restarted it several times, but nothing changes. If not everything looks fine My desktop is availble, also the backlight on the keyboard works fine, but I can do nothing, my MBP is unusable. Only the power button works fine. I tried to connect an external USB keybord without success, the same with usb drives. I'm running 10.5.6 on MBP, Core Duo 1.83 GHz, 2 GB RAM.
I found many discussions here about the same problem( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1568210&tstart=0 ), I tried a restart without battery etc.... Nothing helps.
Please help, my warranty passed away
Message was edited by: gvassilevAs this is literally a brand new imac, I would hope that the ports aren't giving up as I am sure they are very expensive to replace.
If it is that new you should be under applecare so you could take it your nearest apple store and let them deal with it (or call apple first if you want).
Besides the keyboard do you have anything else connected to the usb ports that may be drawing off too much usb power? In which case you may need a powered usb hub. -
Apple Bluetooth Keyboard drops connection
I've reset the SMC and PRAM, checked the batteries, repaired the disk and permissions from the Recovery HD (no drive errors reported), but my keyboard (no problem with Magic Mouse or Trackpad) still drops out and reconnects immediately.
I have these types of logs in Diagnostic and Usage section of Console.app:

Probably, this info just confirms the drop at this particular time, but I wanted to post it in case it offered someone more bluetooth savvy some insight.
Anyone have any ideas on where to go from here? Should I delete the bluetooth.plist file?Welcome back here!
...checked the batteries...
What do you mean? Did you replace them with brand-new ones?
I'm asking because I did have the same effect with my Mini and the BT keyboard tow days ago: For a while the keyboard worked, then it'd disconnect. Though the batteries seemed to be okay at first glance, replacing them fixed it. Your case can be the same, or not...
If it doesn't help: In the BT preferences, do you have the keyboard set as "Favorite"? -
What to do if you spill liquid on your keyboard
After searching on Internet, I found many interesting answers. The one that I tried worked out for me. I found you can unclip each key one after another.
So if you spill juice or any liquid on your keyboard, This is what I recommend.
1- take the bateries out of your keyboard (unplug it if it is a wired keyboard) and put it upside down to let some liquid drop out of it.
2- Before it dries, firmly grip one key and pull it until you here a ''click''. (try to pull the top and not the bottom)
At the beginning, you will probably think you broke it but it should be all right. (to make sure you dont brake anything by taking the keys out, try it out first in the useless keys at the top of your keyboard.)
3- Take Q-tips and alchool to clean the interior of the keyboard. (you can try to RINCE IT BUT I NEVER TRIED AND IT MIGHT BRAKE YOUR KEYBOARD) if you ever try it, let a reply to tell me if it still worked after.
4- Once you consider the key and the part of the keyboard where it was is clean, snap the key back in. place it right side up and push until you hear a ''click''. If it doesnt work, make sure it is not upside down.
MAKE SURE YOU TAKE ONLY ONE KEY OUT AT THE TIME SO YOU DONT MIX THEM UP AND PUT THEM BACK IN THE WRONG WAY!!!
(you might notice the keys are still sticking a little once they dry but it will be better then nothing.)
I hope this advice helped you! :)The important lesson to learn from all of this, never leave food nor drink near computers. Many computer labs won't let you in if you have either food or drink.

Trying to figure out why my audio kept dropping in and out while recording a 90 minute presentation this past weekend.
I just recorded 90 mins today in my office of a TV monitor screen and audio - no audio problems. Batteries were fresh and camera was fully charged over the weekend before I had the audio problems. Bluetooth? Could there have been some sort of cellphone interference with the bluetooth audio signal that caused the problem? I was with a group of about 25 people when recording the event - and I was the only person recording video/audio. My camera was about 15-20 feet from the microphone, which was close to the house mic and sound system - but no interference at all with the audio I did capture.
The audio didn't just drop out - it faded out, and would fade back in after several minutes. Video was complete, no interruption or distortion. HELP!Yes, you can use the 85 watt adaptor. You cannot use the new adaptors because your computer is not equipped with the proper MagSafe connector. But you can use the older MBP adaptors as well as a 60 watt replacement adaptor. All can be found at Apple's Online Store.

MBP 15" early 2011 (MacBookPro8,2) - freeze and 3 beeps after normal boot
Good day.
Month ago I upgraded memory in my MBP early 2011. I bought 2 banks of 4GB Hynix 1333 Mhz(MBP had 2x2GB Hynix banks), installed them and got the first hard freeze with 3 beeps right on the login screen. Since then I got somethink like 15-20 freezes with intervals from 3-4 hours to 1 week and total silence in logs and diagnostic reports.
Note: it boots fine, and freeze occurs during work.
I'm sure it's not a RAM issue because it was tested countless times with AHT, Rember, memtest runned from single user boot, even ASD — all tests passed.
I tried to reproduce the error using Prime95 stress tests, but with no luck — MBP successfully passed 6 hours stress test under 100% CPU and RAM load.
Today MBP freezed 2 times with locked screen and without user activity. Any suggestions?
Additional info:
dmesg - https://gist.github.com/7d3804d11bef38090345
latest log entries right before freeze - https://gist.github.com/c66eaa8c3b08c08c6656
P.S. I'm from Russia, so we don't have AppleCare, only AASPs without needed replacement parts. Also they asks for valid proof of purchase and don't care about Apple ID, serials and stuff.yumitsu,
3 beeps MEANS its a RAM problem or RAM related problem. There is no doubt about this. Make sure RAM is seated properly. Reseat it if necessary. Also make sure that the DIMM slots don't feel loose as a slight jolt is probably enough to dislodge RAM and make your machine expererience these issues.
Have you tried putting back the original 2 x 2GB RAM that originally shipped with your machine back? If everything starts working normally with the original RAM, then you isolated the issue to the 2 x 4GB Hynix RAM. -
I recently started using an iPad. I up loaded several apps. Evernote, cloudon, Goodreader, Drop Box and lots of others.
It crashes when I down load pictures and then try to use them. Converting a jpg to a pdf usually triggers a crash.
Is there a "hitch" in my "giddy up?"
Help.

Are you using the "Print to PDF" dialogue to convert your jpegs to pdf?
In addition to OT's test, you might also check, if using a different "Theme" for printing will avoid the crash:
14 com.apple.AppKit 0x912a52e4 _NSDrawThemeBackground + 1429
15 com.apple.AppKit 0x9145edeb -[NSThemeFrame
You crashlog shows, that iPhoto crashes, when trying to draw the "Print" theme background. There could be a problem wit the installed themes. Can you convert any jpegs to pdf, not only the jpegs downloaded from your iPad?
