MBP 2.16 C2D Trackpad Button Quit Working

Booted my MBP 2.16 Core 2 Duo today and the trackpad button suddenly does not work. The trackpad itself is working (move my finger and the cursor follows), but physical clicks to the trackpad button or taps on the trackpad itself don't register as clicks.
Under Keyboard and Mouse preferences, the Mouse tab is also unavailable.
Any hints on what I can check? I've zapped PRAM, repaired permissions, don't have a bulging batter, etc, etc.
If I plug in an external moue, the system registers the clicks from the external mouse, but the trackpad button seems dead.
I'm under AppleCare, but before I call for the box, I thought I'd ask for help here first.

One correction: taps on the trackpad itself do register as clicks. Only physical clicks to the trackpad button don't work.

Hi Guys,
The trackpad button has just stopped working. It still clicks but nothing happens. Furthermore whilst using 'Tap to click' works I cannot drag anything to the trash or move anything at all unless I plug in a USB mouse.
The only thing I've done is a routine software update and restart!
Any ideas please?

I updated 10.6.6 on 2/23/11. I didn't notice this happening until last week on 3/3. Probably because this isn't my work Mac. I haven't updated the MBP at work and def afraid to right now.
I've been scouring the web and it seems like many people have various issues with their trackpad after this last upgrade. Someone said they had to reinstall the OS. UGH.

Well I have just replaced the trackpad and that has solved my issues. I hope that solves a problem for you guys. You just need to locate a part and fit it. It's not difficult, just fiddly because the screws are very small.

TS3274 Home button quit working, have to turn on and off to do anything

Home button on iPad 2 quit working, have to turn on and off to do anything, any ideas? I tried updating and restoring, nothing works. It is not damaged in anyway. It just suddenly stopped.

Do you have any advice for my iPhone 3, the sleep/wake button just quit working on it. I can't turn on or off, it just stays on. I updated and restrored but it did not help.

Buttons quit working

I'm adding buttons (that open other Captivate tutorials) to
the end of my tutorials. If the user doesn't click the buttons
pretty quickly they quit working. They highlight and look like
they're being clicked, but they don't open the programmed project.
It seems to me that when the slide ends, so does the functionality
of the button. The buttons don't have a "pause until user clicks"
option to check. They do have a pause time, but frankly I thought
that was causing the problem and I turned it off (or I shouldn't
have done that?). But apparently that hasn't helped.
Then, I added an invisible click box to the page that doesn't
do anything if clicked, and has the pause until user clicks
functionailty enabled. This seems to work, but is it necessary?
Feeling like I must be missing something here and can use
HELP! Thanks in advance!

Hi Arl
Buttons by their very nature are designed to pause until the
user clicks. So you really shouldn't turn off the pause.
Normally, if you don't change the action assigned to the
button, it will simply "Continue playing project" when it has been
clicked. And all a button will receive is a single click and it's
done. So if you failed to change the default, the user clicks and
the button continues to the pause point and stops. Then it is dead,
as the single click has expired.
By turning off the pause, you have probably allowed the
playhead to move into the "Inactive" part of the button.
Personally, I'd suggest deleting the buttons AND the Click
Box (The Click Box shouldn't be needed, as the Button should
provide the pause). Then carefully re-insert buttons and be careful
and specific with what you tell them to do. Ensure they pause and
ensure they do something other than "Continue playing project" when
clicked by the user.

My track pad mouse button quit working

The mouse button on my MacBook has quit working, the track pad itself works fine, moves the mouse pointer, etc, but nothing can be selected with the button. Same problem in Windows booted through boot camp. I noticed the problem after running the boot camp support program, this may have "broken" the operation of the select button, but I don't know how to back out those driver updates.

This has been happening to me too. I can hit Escape and things go back to normal.

Trackpad Button Not Working and More...

As of last night my trackpad button just stopped working. No slow degradation of clicks or anything....it just stopped. As in I couldn't click anything on screen....the trackpad movement was absolutely fine...just no click ability.
So, my immediate thoughts were "it's a mechanical problem...gonna have to replace it. I know, I'll use a USB mouse for now." So, I plug it in and the left mouse button does not work. This is a brand new mouse....but just for the sake of it I tried another one from my PC with left and right buttons on it.....same problem.
I knew that it couldn't be mechanical because surely the mouse clicks would have worked ok. It had to be a problem with the OS or the firmware that drives it. So, I first reset the PRAM, reset the PMU and even opened up the Open Firmware screen on boot-up and 'reset-all' in there. No joy.
I then booted up from CD....same problem.
I 'Archived and Installed' new version of OSX....same problem.
I have now completed erased my hard drive and installed a completely clean version of OSX.....and I get the same no click situ.
Before I go chaging the trackpad (which actually involves changing the entire top plate) has anyone got any ideas as to what this problem might be??
And has anyone experienced a broken trackpad button that also effects the way a USB mouse clicks?

I am having the exact same problem.
Only I just re inserted the start up install disk and the track pad and mouse worked fine.
But now I'm logged back into OSX again the problem is back.

Trackpad buttons not working, ideas?

A few weeks ago my trackpad buttons on my macbook unibody started to become unresponsive and then a few days ago they completely stopped working. They no longer click down AT ALL. I followed a few tutorials to try and fix it, including adjusting the screw for the trackpad slightly. I pulled the back off, took out the battery, cleaned everything. It completely works, but only when the computer is upside down! (ie. when I try it upright, it does absolutely nothing. As soon as I flip it over, it clicks fine). I really don't have time/money to bring this in, so if anyone else has had this problem and fixed it, please share.

Trackpad Buttons not working on Lenovo G710

Hi all,
I am running windows 8 and I have the Lenovo G710 Laptop. I have been having this same problem with my trackpad on my Lenovo G710 laptop for a while now. When I got the laptop last xmas, the trackpad was working fine. But in about April this year the trackpad's buttons stopped working. The little symbol in my taskbar shows that the left button is pressed down when it is not and the right button as being up/normal, it is a real pain as I can move the cursor around but I cannot click on anything on the left or right buttons.

Expand buttons quit working until I remove history

When I log into my employer's web site, there are expand/collapse buttons that work perfectly, and have always worked perfectly. Recently, I purchased a Windows 8 computer, and along with it came Firefox 21.0, and suddenly, the expand collapse buttons are problematic. I haven't nailed it down exactly, but after some number of uses, the buttons stop working. After I clear history, they start working again.
In the interest of full disclosure, I have third party software that enhances the capability of my company's web site that uses scripts and Grease Monkey. However, disabling Grease Monkey does not seem to have any impact on the issue.
Any ideas?

There is no fixing the lock button without voiding the warranty; however,there is a work around. Go to Settings>General>Acessibility>Assistive Touch
Turn that ON, once you have done so, a white square/circular icon will pop up onto your screen. If you click it, click on DEVICE and hit the button that says LOCK screen, your phone will now be locked. Since your lock button is now broken, I would advise for you to ocassionally restart your phone, maybe a few times a month, to prevent it from lagging, you can do this by hitting the White square/circular button>Device, and holding down the Lock screen button a for a few seconds, and powering it off. To turn it back on, simply plug your phone back into the charger. As for the camera not working, I have no idea how to fix that.

Trackpad Button Not Working

The button under the glass trackpad stopped working. The tap to click feature still works but anything that needs a physical click of the button doesn't. It makes using the Windows OS nearly impossible to use with out the mighty-mouse. If anyone has an idea what may have caused this and/or how to fix it I would love to know.

If the geniues figure out it is a hardware problem - one option is to take it home with you and call Apple Care. (take the CASE # sheet from the genius with you) They will FedEx you a special box which takes a couple of days and then when the FedEx guy gets to your house with the box you can ask them to wait (if they can) pack it up in the special box and send it right back out. I did this and it only took 3 business days - FedEx pick up on Wed. - Delivery back to me on Friday! They always say it takes 3 to 5 business days and so could be longer, especially if it's over a weekend.
Don't forget to back everything up on an external hard drive first!

Power button quit working

The power button on the iPad quit functioning.
Once the screen is turned on, the only way it powers down is after it times out from lack of use.

1. Try doing a reset(no data will be lost):
Disconnect the iPhone from any computer. Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/wake(power) button simultaneously for about 15 seconds and release when the Apple logo appears. This may not work if the power button is actually faulty.
2. If that doesn't solve the issue, backup the device and restore it as new.

NB: set up as a NEW device because a software issue will be in the backup. If the issue persists after restoring as new, you should offer the device for service.

I have a Bluetooth Mac keyboard, trackpad and magic mouse. They fail regularly and only a series of resets eventually cures the problem. I have switched to a USB mouse, but that eventually fails too. 2011 mini, all current software. Mouse still moves cursor, but no left click. Trackpad loses click ability. Repeated shutdowns. Something is very wrong.

If even the USB mouse is failing, that's interesting. Make sure you remove the batts from any nearby BT mice, and reboot the system. USB mouse should work fine, if it's still not clicking, something needs to be probably changed in the system preferences.

Why did the smaller/larger buttons quit working in Mail 3.3

In Apple Mail 3.3, message toolbar, the smaller/bigger buttons no longer works. The function works using the pulldown menu. I tried reloading mail, and a new tool, but no cigar. Anybody know what's what?

My bad, I should have said Mail V. 3.2 as that is what I have.
The buttons I refer to are on the tool bar of a message window. If you don't have them, you can go to the view pulldown menu, then select customize toolbar and drag the
button to the toolbar of your message window. It looks like a small capital A and a large capitol A. When viewing or writing an e-mail in the older versions, if the message letters were small I could go and hit the large A a few times and the lettering would increase in size, but no more with my upgrade to 10.5.

Next / forward button quit working

I was cleaning up my HD, transferred iTunes folder to external HD. Dragged & dropped files back into music lib, now the forward/back buttons don't work. Files play when clicked/opened directly, but won't move to next song.
PPC G4, 1.25ghz, 1.25gsram,OS10..4.11, itunes 8.2
