MBP 2.2 (Presently) or iMac 2.4 2.8 20" or 24"????

I have the matte, 5 weeks old, never seems to run out of horse power, I guess I really love the displays and hope Apple offers them in the future. Anyway, I know with LEGIT iWork 08, Ilife 08, MS OFFICE, and more, that I could get at least $1800 (5 weeks old) and wondering what I should do!
I do mostly audio, and can get an employee to get me a iMAC at his discount (cheap) and save a few dollars - I would lose the EXPRESS slot (no FIRMTEK RAID or EXPRESS Apogee) but could I make it work? An iMac, faster (bigger HD) and external 800 FW for samples and some light editing (FCP/iMovie 08) or should I keep the MPB. I use it mostly at home, only time I really have the advantage is when I use it on the bed, sort of nice.
Opinions?
Thanks

Bump, thanks!!!!!!!

  • Boot last rev MBP off clone of 2007 iMac.

Hi all, I've got a bit of a problem, and I'd be grateful for any advice / assistance. I've got a refurb mid 2010 15 inch MBP on order, should arrive tomorrow I hope. But I've got to head for HQ the next day. Normally I work on my 24-inch iMac, it's about 2007 (I think: also refurb) - 2.4 Ghz C2D. "Had I but world enough and time" as the poet said, I'd get all the stuff that I need for my work installed on the MBP, and take that to HQ. But I won't have time to do all that on top of my normal days' work Monday and Tuesday. Assuming I can get an external drive today, to get me through the HQ visit I'm thinking of using CCC to clone the iMac's internal HD to that external, then booting the MBP off that. The iMac is on SL (10.6.5) and I'm assuming the MBP when it gets here will be on that or more - not that that should matter. Should work, no? And am I right in thinking it's shut down - hold option key + power on to get a choice of boot location please? And afaik you can boot off a usb-connected drive, it doesn't have to be Firewire? Also, I'm not sure whether or not the FW connection on the iMac works.Would it matter if I wrote the clone from the iMac using USB, then connected it to the MBP using FW? Or use USB for both? Sorry about the level of all the questions, I know there are guys / gals out there who boot off thumb drives, sandwich toasters and all sorts, but I never do this stuff and now I've got to do it in a rush. Thanks in advance, save an old man having to lug a 24-inch iMac all around HQ offices! TIA - Terry.

OK - cloned the iMac internal to the new external. IMac boots off external. Now just need MBP to show up tomorrow and see if that does. Should do. - Terry.

  • MBP Second  Monitor in an iMac

Is it possible to use iMacs Monitor as second monitor for a MBP? I have an iMac and am thinking to get a MBP, this would be great in some cases.

    No.

  • How can I get ilife (iphoto/imovie) on my Used Retina ... Previously purchased new mbp 17 and have an Imac 27....

Well I just purchased another Retina mbp 15 and this ones a keeper (sold 2 before this was just looking for a mint one).  Now my issue is I cant get ilife (in particular imovie and iphoto) without purchasing it and I dont want to do that.... yet.
I did purchase a brand new mbp 17 in 2010 but not sure if I registered it or logged into the app store. Dont think I did because I dont see any downloads available in the app store.
I have an imac 27 Im using right now and I dug up the appllications cd it came with.
    My questions are:
How can I install ilife or any of the apps without buying them?
Are the applications one use only for the specific machines?
Is there any way to use the resource dvd to install onto my retina ?
(regarding this I have tried using remote disc and my retina wont show anything under remote disc when the cd is in my ima )
ANy input or help is appreciated. I did enjoy using imove and iphoto alot and would like to have them again.

I appreciate the replies. Grant if I have an Imac and the apps on the cd then what you are saying is it should be tied to my apple id and therefore I should be able to install them on my new macbook?
I dont recall when I bought my mbp 17 if it had a cd and back then it was my first mac.. dont think there was an app store just itunes. It isnt tied to my account but shouldnt it be? I guess the person who bought that 17 from me got a free bundle :/
Its not a matter of $30 I understand that fully. Its just its $30 wasted if I am able to get it.
What im confused about (and I dont care to argue apples reasoning for it) is tying ilife to 'that Mac alone" is just dumb when a new owner of a machine cant install it and has to buy it again. that means the original owner keeps the apps for any machine he wishes and it isnt for the machine.
I think im confusing myself and possibly answered my own question but ill leave it lol.

  • MBP Compared to a G4 iMac?

There's lots of ruminating about the speed issues of non-universal applications on the MBP. I'm moving from a 17" iMac 700 to the 17" MBP. What can expect performance-wise with the main Adobe apps with ths kind of hardware change? Plus it will allow me to ditch the IBM thinkpad that I need to carry along. Any thoughts?

I just tried to capture an hour of HDV of my son skateboarding. His G4 800 MHz iMac couldn't do it. I connected a fireWire drive and Sony camcorder to my MBP and captured almost an hour of video in real time with iMovie. I connect the FW drive to his imac and now he can edit. Photoshop runs slow on a G4 iMac compared to a MBP as well. i can't think of a single program that will run faster on an iMac (G4).

  • MBP as additional monitor for iMac

Hi all, I have a an imac and a macbook pro. I have purchased a belkin mini dvi to mini dvi, I can now have the imac display as an external monitor, I was wondering if the opposite is possible, so I would like to have macbook pro as the external monitor?
    Thanks
    Lee

    Hi,
sorry to say but no it's not possible.
The iMac is at the moment the only Mac with video-in capabilities, the MBP don't have them.

  • MBP Core 2 Duo vs iMac Core Duo

I am pondering upgrading my laptop (1.5GHz G4 Powerbook) to a new Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro (2.33GHz, 2GB RAM, 256MB Video). I know that the performance upgrade here is going to be significant.
However, 1 year ago I bought a 20" iMac with the Core Duo processor in it (2GHz, 2GB Ram, 256MB Video) which I use for Aperture and World of Warcraft.
Am I going to see a noticeable difference in performance between the iMac and the Macbook Pro? If so, I'll just sell the iMac and buy an external display for the laptop.
    Thanks
    Chris

The previous poster is correct. Because the iMac will be using desktop components, despite the increased processor speed of the MBP, apps like WoW will probably still run better on the iMac. However, as you can see from my Macintosh Computer profile, I have an earlier model 2.0 GHz MBP and I can tell you that even without 2GB of ram, which I have, it runs amazing. The 2 GB of ram just puts it over the top. And if you're still not satisfied with the frame rate, just run boot camp and install WoW on there. If I remember correctly, it'll run about 6 frames per second faster. In spite of this, I don't really like running windows, so I run WoW on Tiger anyways. And to be honest, it looks equally as good as my friend running wow on his gaming laptop. I don't even use an external display, so that'll be like the cherry on top. I guess all I'm saying is keep the iMac if you want, but I think you'd be equally satisfied and perhaps save some money if you used the MBP alone--with or without an external display.
I have never used aperture so I can't comment on that, sorry.
At any rate, Good luck with your decision

  • Connect PS3 to MBP retina and then onto IMAC 21,5"??? POSSIBLE??

    greetings to all of you!
i wold like to share with you guys ths doubt the i have, and i'm pretty sure i'm not the first one thinking about this... hopefuly somebody can help me..
i know that it is possibe to connect the PS3 onto a macbook pro retina display with not that much of an issue. jut need to have the right cables and adapters, i'm cleared about that. AND i also know that with just a simple thunderbolt cabl you can use yor imac 21,5 (specificallly mid2011) as a monitor display for the mbp..
THAT'S WHY i came out with the ide to get all these three things together and connected, in order to play PS3 and watch it in my 21,5 imac!
I KNOW there are devices like eyetv HD, that allows you tu play ps3 on ypur imac 21,5 directly.. bt i'm currentlu living in croatia and buying something from amazon it's just way to slow to get it in here..
PLEASE if anybody has ever try it..or knows about someone that did, and it actually worked, please please let me know.. i'm not an electronic gnius but when you think abot the idea it doesn't sound too crazy or stupid.. that's what i think.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH HOP YOU CAN HELP LET ME KNOW

To answer the question, there is no built-in way to do what you are trying to do.
"Target Display Mode allows you to use a supported iMac as an external display for another Mac computer using Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt cables."

For a PS3 you will need to use a third party device/software.

    1) Can I transfer a keynote presentation from my imac to my ipad2?
    2) How do I do it?
    3) Will all features and actions of presentation stay intact?
    Thank you

I think the easiest way to transfer a keynote to your iPad is to use the ICloud sync between the keynote app on your Mac and iOS device.
This should transfer all the stuff in your presentation that it looks the same.

  • MBP owners who converted from iMac - thoughts?

Hi - I just sold my 24" Core 2 Duo iMac and I'm either going to replace with one of the 27" iMacs or I may go portable. I don't think anything I use is going to bring the variables of desktop vs. laptop power into concern - it is more portability vs. screen real-estate + the financials. I'm typing this on one of the latest macbooks (with a 5400 drive) and I've been using this for the past couple of days and enjoy elements of it but not sure its what I really want. So, the big question for the community here that I have is: are any of you happy MBP users who switched from using an iMac? Any major regrets? As a huge mac fan, I know neither are really BAD choices but I do need to make a decision and I'm really indecisive. Thanks.
    Steve

The "screen real estate" issue is easy to take out of the equation , Steven. The MBP (even the 13" model) can support DVI external monitors up to 30" if you want it to, and a good quality third party 24" screen can be added for just a couple of hundred dollars these days. This gives you the advantage of both portability when needed with screen space when required (though unless you buy an expensive high quality monitor it won't be quite as glorious as the 27" iMac screen, perhaps). I spend a lot of my time with my 13" model hooked up to a 24" Benq screen , which does what I need perfectly. (In my case, though, my iMac was a 20" model, so for me the MBP with external offers more room, not less, when I'm "at the desk").
That said, the performance advantage of the 27" i7 iMac over the MBP is very substantial, and even the base model 27" offers a decent lift, so don't dismiss it too quickly. You get more storage with the iMac, too.
I'd say the real equation is portability versus performance, with the price equation varying depending on which particular models you are considering, how much you wish to spend on an external screen for the MBP etc, etc.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • Office 2004 Works on MBP, Does not work on iMac

I have both an iMac and a Macbook Pro. I upgraded both machines to leopard. Office 2004 works great on the MBP. On the iMac it freezes up and requires a force quit. I tried uninstalling Office on the iMac. The installation assistant freezes when I try to reinstall.
Any hints or suggestions. Both of the mac's have basically the same install of leopard, neither machine is tricked out.

    You are welcome.

  • Will I be okay, MBP 2.2? vs iMac? Read in for test drive.

    Okay, here is the deal....
I played with iMac all day yesterday as well as MBP 2.4 256 MB
Was playing around with iMac (new) 2.4 highest in store 24".
Final Cut Pro is loaded on both.
When you play back the demo file (motocycle) with FX on iMac, it would glitch for a moment, freeze then move on, stuttering if you will.
I noticed that when you played the same file Mac Book Pro DEMO there is no glitch! 2.4 It plays flawless and fluid, *should I expect the same with 128 MB of memory as the 128 is really used for when you have two displays (according to macfeats) when you use both monitors...128 for each display so my guess is for one DISPLAY 128 should be fine.*
    Thoughts?
Both had 256 MB of memory of GPU.
    iMac ATI HD2600
    MBP Nvidia 8600HD
    Thoughts?

The difference in the two could be memory. The default config for the Macbook Pro is 2 GB whereas the iMac's default memory is 1 GB. I believe the memory is a bigger factor than the memory on the graphics card. Why Apple defaults the iMac to 1GB doesn't make sense. At a minimum, 2 GB is needed to really run OSX with multiple apps running.

  • Is anyone having issues importing Keynote presentation from imac to ipad?

    Hi There,
I paid a company to do a presentation for me,  it was created in powerpoint, i downloaded Keynote for mac to import it into keynote on ipad,
problem is that it does not recognise some of the fonts and the sizing is different, the base layout is quite good and it works for us.
