MBP 2.4Ghz Penryn Magsafe LED light randomly on/off w/ sporadic charging

I have one of the February 2008 MacBook Pro's with 2.4Ghz C2D. I have had this thing for only 5 days and have noticed that the charging behavior has been sporadic.
Sometimes i plug in my MBP and the amber light illuminates to indicate charging, and 10 minutes later, the light is off - no light, not even green is illuminated. But the MBP indicates that it is plugged in and charging on the menu bar, as well as flashing LEDs on the bottom of the MBP/battery pack.
I have also noticed that sometimes when I plug in the MBP and place the computer in sleep then return many hours later, the LED on the magsafe is not illuminated at all, and the battery is still drained around the same amount as before I plugged it in. This has happened three times so far. This is an intermittent problem and not reliably reproducible.
I have already tried resetting the SMC. I guess I will call AppleCare... Anyone else have this problem?

That sounds like a faulty power supply unit ...

  • Slow performance after rebooting on my MBP 2,4ghz Penryn

I bought a penryn MBP in the summer 2008, and i had stable, and overall awesome performance.
One day the fps in WoW dropped from stable 80fps to 15fps. And i paniced, i thought it was the classic "8600m GT" overheating issue. And i reinstalled MacOSX trying to fix it via software. It didn't help.
A few weeks later i went on a trip, so i powered my MBP off entirely, and when i turned it on again; i found all my performance back on track!
So i rebooted again to bootcamp to play a little from steam, and suddenly my performance was gone.
I figured out that, if i "shut the computer down entirely-wait 5 seconds - then turn on" i get full performance. But if i restart directly i loose all my performance.
I've tried every reset (nvram, pram and SMC) no improvement. And this little anomaly is really grinding my gears that a computer for 3000$ can't even reboot without problems.
    Please support me here guys.
    Thank you

    Hi SimElk,
It sounds to me as if you may be running a program with a serious memory leak of some kind (ie it uses more and more RAM the longer it is used) or possibly a background process that becomes a serious CPU hog when provoked..
Have a look at Activity Monitor both at the time when all is running smoothly and at the time when problems are occurring, and compare the following areas.
See http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1473 for basic instructions on using Activity Monitor for tracking down a CPU hog. To see if anything is using progressively more RAM as the problem begins to emerge use the "System Memory" , rather than the "CPU" tab in Activity monitor. Focus on the "Real Memory" column, rather than the "Virtual memory" column. You should also take a look at the "Page outs" and "Swap used" figures when the "System memory" tab is open.
Just as a thought, does it make any difference whether you are using battery or mains power?
    Cheers

  • Battery LED light randomly working, why?

    Hi all,
I have read past discussions on this but felt like there was no up to date one and no real issue was resolved.
I have a Macbook Pro 15-in Early 2011. Lately the battery has been bipolar and basically works when it feels like it. It is not an outlet issue because sometimes it will decide to work on a certain outlet and than another time it will not.
I have cleaned the charger and the part of the computer where it plugs in as recommended on the boards but that does not seem to be involved with the issue.
I was going to contact Apple Support but it is no longer supported and I don't feel like paying for an answer you all may very well know.
Charger is in good shape, I don't know why it's suddenly acting like this.
    Any ideas?

You state the charger is good.  What testing have you done to confirm this?  Plugged the "good charger" into a different Mac and confirm it charges the other Mac w/o problems?  Or maybe used a different charger with the problem Mac and it has the same issue?
Either way would be acceptable for testing/confirming that indeed your charger is good.  Not being critical, just thorough.

  • Help: macbook didn't charge, LED light is off!!!

My model is 2008 late 2.4GHz macbook and suddenly the magsafe LED light is off and can't charge the macbook. I took it to apple store, and after check they said this laptop needed to go further detection, which will cost at least $280 since i'm just out of my one-year warranty.
I found a similar problem post below without any clear resolution, and after reading it I found lots of these models had the similar problem, so i believe it is definitely the common problem for the 2008 late aluminum macbook series and the logic board might be broken. Does anybody else here have the same problem? We should unite and ask Apple to replace these defected laptop for us for free!!!
    The former post is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1824683&start=0&tstart=0

    First try an SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Do you have (or can you borrow) a spare MagSafe you can try charging with (any MagSafe will do). If a different MagSafe successfully charges your MacBook, then you need to buy a new MagSafe for your machine, as yours is toast.
If a different MagSafe doesn't work, either, then the problem is likely hardware and you don't have much choice except to have Apple or another service center work on it. You can search for an authorized service provider here:
    http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/
Often the non-Apple Store providers will work a little cheaper. Good luck!

  • Brand New iMac randomly shuts off!! Help!!

I have no idea why this is happening. I've been using macs for 5 years now, had every generation iMac and not a single problem. My new Penryn chipset iMac 20" randomly shuts off!!! Why is this happening? Possibly a power supply issue?
I've cleared the SMC, and PRAM. No avail. Sometimes it will shut down after just 10 minutes, sometimes it will run all night......It's really random.

If it is brand new then it is under warranty. Take it back. It's obviously a hardware problem unless there is a problem with the electric supply where you have it plugged in.

  • MacBook Pro won't turn on after crash. Magsafe charger LED light blinking rapidly

Hi. I hope you can help me.
I have a macbook Pro 13", from september 2012, which crashed earlier today:
I was charging my iphone through USBport on my macbook (not an Apple USB-iPhone power-cable) .
My MacBook was charging through the magsafe charger (about 30% power i think).
I took the phone out to make a call, when that was done, I reconnected the phone to my mac for further charging.
My MacBook crashed instantly. I took out the USB cable, tried to turn on my mac, but nothing happened. There was no light in the magsafe LED.
The crashing has happened before, when I've been charging my phone through USB connections, but I've always been able to turn my mac back on.
This time nothing happened when I pushed the power button. It had comepletely shorted out.
BTW. Earlier today I received a "storage almost full" warning on my mac, and I was actually in the middle of cleaning that up (deleting downloads and trash files).
    Typical and just my luck!
Now, a few hours later, I tried restoring SMC (shift+ctrl+alt+power), and now the charger LED is blinking rapidly (but faintly) orange.
Do you have any ideas on how to fix this? All applestores nearby are closed today, I live in Denmark.
Thank you so much in advance!
    Kind regards Emilie

    Try the SMC reset again:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
    Then try a NVRAM reset:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063
    Then try a safe boot:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262
If no success, then you will have to take it in for service.
    Ciao.

  • X Through battery icon, no LED light on MagSafe, 2 month old Macbook Pro

This all started this afternoon. I noticed a black X through the battery icon in the upper tool bar, then noticed that there was no LED light on the MagSafe charger. The fan on my computer was also constantly running. This computer is only TWO months old. Since day one I have run the battery down before re-charging. This should have properly calibrated the battery.
Is there some simple fix for this or do I have to take time out of my life during the holiday season, trek to the mall and pray that someone at the genius bar has time to resolve this issue? Hoping there is a saint here somewhere to help me out

    MamaGG:
    Call Apple Care (800) 275-2272.
Your computer is warranted for 1 year for Hardware and for 3 mos, I believe, for free phone tech support.
They may have you take it to the Apple Store near you for the "genius" to work on it.
Have you Serial Number handy. Locate it from the "Apple Icon" drop down menu on the left and side of the upper title Bar and open up "About this Mac" and open up "more info" and then "Hardware".
They have the best support in the industry.
Meanwhile consider getting the Apple Care Add on package for the MB Pro. It extends this Hardware coverage for 3 years and provides free Apple Care Phone Tech support for that time.
I have had it on all my Macs which I have owned. The phone support is well worth it.

  • MagSafe LED Green, but Battery Not Charging to 100%

I got my MBP 15" (the "low"-end version) about 3-4 weeks ago. About a week ago, I noticed that when working on my computer with the AC adapter plugged in, it charged up to 98% (according to both CoconutBattery and the Mac itself) and then stopped; the day after, it only charged up to 96%. That same day, I had the entire MBP replaced because of an issue with a faulty latch, and though I mentioned the battery % issue at the Geek Bar, I was told it isn't a big deal and should be taken care of by virtue of the replacement MBP. However, 2 days after, I notice that once again, my battery charges to only 98% and then stops; again, the MagSafe LED is still green as if it were fully charged.
Is this a problem/will it keep degrading? Or is it just normal? Is there any way to fix this?
    Thanks,
    ~Ethan

Hi EthanRT: This is perfectly normal, battery behaviour. There is an explanation in this Apple article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1909?locale=en_CA

  • Macbook PRo will not boot, MagSafe adaptor light does not work !

Okay... so i have this issue with my MBP where it will not power up.
The light on the magsafe does not show up at all when connected to the MBP. I have tried another magsafe but failed. I have not tried another battery so im not sure if that is wheret the fault lies.
Ive tried the SMC reset holding the power button down for long, but still no result. However, i left the MBP disconnected from the magsafe and went out for the whole day. Came back, connected the magsafe and thought id try again. I held the power button for 10 seconds and the MBP started booting. It wasnt the normal boot im not sure if it was performing some sort of safe boot, but it was doing something, the screen turned transparent white, restarted and i could finally log in. The battery was very low so i left it on charge with magsafe.
One thing i have noticed is that sometimes i wont get the light showing on the magsafe but it may still be charging at that point.
This morning i wake up and its the same issue all over again. It must have stopped charging or something as i left the MBP on with magsafe connected. Now it will not turn on no matter what i do.
If i tilt the magsafe connector at an angle i can see a dim green light but then id have to hold it in that place to see that light.
Please advise on what i should do next. Excuse the long story !

  • My LED light turns on and off on its own, how can I fix this?

I dropped my phone today and my LED light on the back by the camera turns on and off randomly. I've dropped it before today and it just now started doing this. How can I fix it or do I have to bring it in to a Apple store?

The phone is probably broken. You will have to take it to an Apple store for repair or replacement.

  • LED lights issue / battery problems

Sorry if this has been asked before, I looked in some old threads but didn't find an answer...
When I plug the MagSafe adapter into my computer, the LED lights up for 2 secs when I plug it in and then goes out. I seem to be using my battery power.
But if I take the battery out, then the LED becomes green again and it is powered by the adapter once again.
I followed a troubleshooting article but no luck? Can someone explain what is going on here?

Follow Rod's link to the "[how to clean the MagSafe connector|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303240]" tech article and make sure both the plug on the cable as well as the connector on the Mac are perfectly clean and debris-free. My connector tends to pick up lint from God-knows-where and after awhile the plug does not seat completely in, after which I start getting the blinking lights; a good cleaning has always restored functionality. If that doesn't remedy the problem, you will probably need Apple support.
In order to know for sure if it is charging, you may want to open System Preferences, select Energy Saver, go to the Options tab and tick the "Show battery status on the menu bar" option. That way you can see what's going on at all times with the icon on the menubar.

  • Screen is black, no fan is running, LED lights for volume is on/off

On a random day, I opened up laptop to use and hit the power button, everything turned on but the screen slowly went white. turned back off & then back on & still did same thing. A couple months later, tried to use it again, LED lights for volume, network, and light on front of laptop are lit, but everything else is not; screen is black, no fan running. This is only when I plug an HDMI cable from one laptop to another. Laptop was plugged into charger, when it is unplugged of hdmi, it is completely useless. Is there some way I can get the files back that i had on the laptop? my brother said a while back that it is completely shot. Id really appreciate some help & if anyone knows the fees I would have to get it fixed by HP or best buy, that'd be great! ( if it is even worth fixing, let me know.)

If you want us to help, then tell us what kind of laptop we are discussing. What are you trying to do by running an hdmi cable from one laptop to another? It will do nothing so don't do it. You can check to see whether it is the motherboard or the screen by connecting an external monitor and see if it gets a picture on the external screen. You can get your data off by removing the hard drive and using an adapter to connect it to another computer.

  • How to force a shutter speed on footage that strobes due to LED lighting?

I shot some footage of a speaker against a projected backdrop that had LED lights and didn't have time to find the right shutter speed before it actually started. So now the background strobes quite frequently random colors due to them being out of sync. During the break I found that 1/60th of a second shutter speed evened it out enough to be watchable. So part 2 is okay but part 1 is horrible. I've already tried a slew of plugs in FCP and am stuck. I shot some burlesque footage a while back that had this same issue but turned it into old aged film and you can't tell. But this is for a client that kind of needs this to be clear for training. Help please! I know Shake has the power to do this, but not sure where the tool is...???

The best way to deal with stuff like this is to be creative with it. I'm sure some of the regulars to this forum have heard this story many times before but I'm going to tell it again anyway. I was working on a movie in Seattle that was shot on 35mm. We'd shoot one day and get the telecined tapes back the next day (or the day after if there were a lot). The last day of shooting came along, and the crew packed up and left for LA the next morning, with the post guys staying in Seattle to continue the edit. We got that last tape back after they'd left and guess what? One of the camera angles in a conversation scene was completely out of focus. The other guy was fine but every shot of the main character was unusable. Everyone had left - there was no way we could reshoot it, so we put our thinking caps on and ended up cutting in the good angle as a flashback during another scene. The result was awesome and far more powerful than the original scene would have been, and we'd never have found it if that angle hadn't been out of focus. I want to shake that AC by the hand if I ever see him again.
So try to think of a creative way around the problem and it could end up being even better.

  • Connecting LED light to a table, and lights up if a number exists.

I am trying to allow a LED light to be connected to a table or graph and when a constant is reach or if a constant exist in the table, the LED light will light up.
For example, I have random numbers coming into the table or waveform graph, and any number greater than 8 will trigger the LED light to light up.
    Can anyone help me.
