MBP 2,5 GHz or 2,9GHz?

Hi.
I'm going to buy a Mac, and wondering on which I should settle for. What I will use the Mac for is general school work, streaming soccer matches, the web of course, and playing Football Manager 2013 when it comes out. Is the 2,5GHz all I need, or should I settle for the 2,9GHz?

The part number for the panels in all the new MBPs, I am told by an Apple rep, is the same. What they don't tell you, however, is that the there are different manufacturers of the panels and that it is a lottery as to which panel you will get. Using Colorsync Utility, I was able to determine that mine is a 9C85 - the other is a 9C84. The 9C85 is made by Taiwanese manufacturer Chimei and the other is made by either LG or Samsung.
As you all know, when you buy a LCD TV, you will choose one model over another even if the specs are the same - it all comes down to personal preference probably borne out of the quality of the manufacturing process. So the MBP you see in the store, may not be the same as the one you take home.
I don't know about you, but I do not believe that Apple should get their parts from different manufacturers for such an important component. Everybody loves the screen in the MBA, myself included. At least it comes from the same manufacturer - AU Optronics. The one you see in the store, is the one you will get. Apple probably can use one manufacturer in this instance because of volumes. Volumes or not, I'd rather wait for the best screen, rather than be lumped with something from a Taiwanese company that I would never knowingly by a product from - I thought when I was buying my new MBP, that it was made to the highest standards in ALL respects.
The screen, after all, is the thing you look at the most.
Imagine if Apple started using different manufacturers for the CPU - why should it be any different for the screen?

  • RAM upgrade for MBP 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

I have a MBP 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo currently with 2 GB of RAM and with all the work I do on it I would like to upgrade to 4 GB. Purchasing the RAM through Apple is out of the question because it so expensive.
I would like to know what is the best brand to buy and on what website.. Is an upgrade to 4 GB possible for my MBP? It looks like I have my "Bank 0/DIMM0" filled with 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM 667 MHz and my "Bank 1/DIMM1" filled with the same thing. Does this mean that both of my RAM slots are full AND if I want to upgrade my RAM I'll have to purchase 2 sets of 2 GB RAM? Please help as I am new to all of the tech stuff...
Another side note... I've noticed that some discussions have stated that some MBP are only upgradable to 3 GB of RAM, but I'm pretty sure that I can upgrade mine to 4 GB of RAM. Can anyone shed any light on this?
    Your help is much appreciated...

yes, both of your RAM slots are full, so to get 4GB you will have to get 2 2GB sticks. Having the same model I can safely assure you that it will recognize all 4GB of the new Ram.
as for brands, there have been many I have seen recommended on this board, but one name seems to pop up consistently is Kensington, I picked up my ram from the store I bought my laptop at, so I couldn't recommend a site, sorry

  • Will the new 13 MBP 2.4 Ghz be fast enough to properly run Aperture 3?

I'm in the market for purchasing a macbook pro (currently have an 07' model macbook), and my question is will the 13 inch 2.4 Ghz be able to properly run aperture 3? My current macbook is able to run it, but quickly overheats and becomes alot slower, and while the 15 inch mbp does sound great, the size is just too big for me (also on a tight budget).
    Thanks for the help.

Depends on your definition of properly and, more specifically, what types of images you usually work with in Aperture. JPEGS would be no problem. Smaller RAW files should be fine as well. If, however you're working with RAW files from a newer DLSR (15-24 megapixels each), then you're going to find Aperture sluggish. This isn't only because of the processor, which is still decent, but also because of the slower integrated graphics rather than the higher performance discrete graphics found in the larger MacBook Pros.
You'll also have a relatively slow 5400 RPM hard drive unless you're going for an SSD (which I doubt given your budget). All these factors add up to limit performance in one of the most performance intensive apps around.
FWIW, if Aperture is your primary app (it's mine and I love it), I'd go with a 15". Besides performance, the screen size on a 13" is pretty small for working with apps like Aperture and Photoshop and hi-res photos. If you really can't swing the 15", you might want to take a look at Lightroom. Although I don't like it as much as Aperture, particularly when it comes to organizing my images, it does perform much better on slower hardware.

  • Will SATA raid and MBP 2.16 Ghz ok for this....

I will be doing color correction of a 90 min film with 2 video tracks where the first track is the edited movie and second track, some Titles.
Usually, i upconvert the footage to 8 or 10 bit uncompressed format for color correction and final ouput.
I would like to try and takle this job with my MBP c2d 2.16 Ghz with a Sonnet SATA pluggeg into the expansion 34 card slot. Do all the work then bring the finished film to a post house for ouput.
Has anyone tried this and will such a set up powerful-stable enough to perform such a task without any problems ?? Thanks.

  • MBP 2.5 gHz vs MBP 2.4 gHz Display Difference

Has anyone notice the 2.4 gHz MBP screen looks (in terms of color and appearance) like the 2.4 MacBook (not Pro) screen. My friend has a 2.4 gHz MBP and I have the 2.5 gHz MBP and there is definitely a difference in screen brightness and appearance

  • MBP 2.6 ghz slower than dual 2.0

    Hi people.
I traded my dual 2.0 g5 for a 2.6 ghz mbp. I needed a portable solution and could not afford two computers so this was the solution. I put an esata card with two drives and the data rates with this solution are the same as in the g5 (80mbps per drive), so far so good.
The problem is that running the same software versions for everything, the mbp is more than twice slower. For example a 90 min encode in compressor (custom one pass fixed rate) is about 4 hours in the notebook, and about realtime in the g5.
I have 2gb ram in this machine and had 1 in the g5. System is snow leopard and final cut studio 2.
Any suggestion before I have to clean install everything?
    As always, thanks a lot.
    Pepo

Custom installation on a factory new machine won't give you many options other than leaving out iLife, a bunch of printer drivers and fonts. That should not affect FCS performance, even the most basic Intel CPU based Mac should be faster than a G5.
Have you run Software Update, repaired permissions on the boot drive, etc?

  • More space for MBP 2.33 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo

    Hello,
I´ve a MBP 15"/2.33 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo/4 GB 667 Mhz Ram/ Mac OSX 10.5.6, with a 120 GB hard drive. I use external drives and I´ve lots of stuff outside, but a bigger drive would be better.
Is it possible to change for a bigger hard drive?
If so, how big? Brand suggestion?
    Thank you very much.

Hi Neuroanatomist (or any other Mac Friend), a little help ,-) please.
I just bought this 320 GB/5400 rpm Fujitsu drive for my MBP 15" 2.33.
The local TB Apple store gave me a period of 72 hours to replace the drive...I can´t wait so much time without working. So I must do the drive replacement myself. Is there a tutorial (text, pictures, video?) to help open the MBP, replace the drive and get my computer from Time machine?
Thanks very much for your help.

  • Samsung 840 pro 512 GB SSD for Mid 2010, 15-inch MBP 2.66 GHZ with 8GBRAM

    Hi All,
My MBP configuration is as follows:
I presently have CRUCIAL M4 256MB SSD.  It is there for past 2 years no issues.  Now I need more room as am planning to create windows partition with VS2012 with TFS.   I am planning of Samsung 840 pro 512gb.    My questions are as follows:
    A) Does this work on Mid 2010, 15inch 2.66GHz with 8GB Ram (above configuration) MBP?
    B) Will it be faster than my CRUCIAL M4 256GB.?
How much it will cost.? who is the reliable retailer in Singapore.?
    Thanks and regards

The graphics processor of your MacBook is failing. Not so surprising for this particular model, I'm afraid.

  • Whine and mbp 1,83 ghz new logic boards

I've seen at least 2 posts saying that 1,83 mbp's logic boards are being replaced due to the whine issue. Is that true? anyone had the logic board replaced and the whine actually stopped? I'm sorry if this is a repeated question.

I second this. I bought mine the day before they did the price change. I am not having any issues with mine and very happy with the machine. I did't think it is worth the .17ghz to maybe get a problamatic machine. So I went to the store and asked for the price adjustment. They gave me $100 back. this is a good start to getting 1gig of memory added to my machine.

  • Direct selection tool not showing anchors illustrator CS3, Mac 10.5.8, MBP 2.6 GHz

With the direct selection tool (white arrrow) moving over an anchor they show up, but even if the anchor is selected the anchor blue box disappears as soon as the mouse moves away, so its impossible to select a handle.  I can still move an anchor, but its hard to select two anchors to joint the paths etc., sort of like driving blind.  If I click on a path, then hold down the command key, the hollow box anchors show up and the cursor changes into the selection tool.  The hollow boxes show up on selecting using the selection tool (black arrow).  I am pretty direct selection tool was working correctly last week (am an occasional user).
I've know the difference between the select tool, direct selection tool, and group selection tool.   I think this happened a year ago and deleting a preference file helped.  I, quit illustrator,  deleted "com.adobe.illustrator.plist" in my user library, and tried again.  that didn't help.

  • I need help on MBP, 2.2 GHz or 2.4?

I'am a interested in buying a 15". However, I'm concerned of the performance. I have an HD camera and I film pro things and I'm thinking of installing Vegas Pro 11. Also when I go to the USAF Academy, I will use it as well. I might also run Windows 7 Home via Bootcamp and play Microsoft Flight Simulator X or run anything not compatible with the OSX at some time. I will also upgrade the RAM to 8 GB. Which one should I choose?

If you are gonna do any kind of video anything you definitely want the higher speed CPU, but in addition to that you want the one that has the higher MB video card to help with all that extra memory and the GB's of vid's coming at it.
Like Scorpii said apple will always try and update their products periodically, if you can find out for sure when and you can wait that long, I say wait and get the latest and "greatest" and make sure to get applecare and you have no worries for years to come

  • RAM Upgrade for Mid-2010 MBP 2.8 GHz Core i7

I ordered an 8 GB Memory upgrade kit from OWC. When I install the memory, the screen remains blank and I get 3 long tones, 3 short tones and 3 long tones. Article HT2538 says that should be a Firmware restoration from CD in process, but that's not the case. Software Update says everything is at the latest level. Bad Ram, or wrong specs the more likely culprit? What about Firmware?
Both the current system settings and the label on the new ram says DDR3 PC8500 1066MHz

Update: OWC Tech Support responded to try and clean the RAM contacts witha pencil eraser. This work for one module, but not the other. I will be returning the defective module.
Additionally, I was incorrect about the error code. The system replies with 3 short tones, 3 long tones, 3 short tones. This is opposite of the "Firmware upgrade" code I thought I was getting. I have not been able to ID this code (The RAM failed checksum code is just 3 short tones, not this sequence)

  • W520 connects at 5 GHz only at 54 mbps. Any idea?

    Hello,
Been trying to solve this for a while. I have the w520 with Intel Ultimate 6300.  I did a clean install and everything, all latest drivers, but my wifi only connects to my router at 54 mbps at 5 GHz. It's not my router as my HTPC can connect fine at ~300 mbps at 5 GHz.  Any idea?
    Thanks.

like you said, your T510, mine's a W520, and with Intel Centrino Ultimate 6300.
Whatever the case, for those with the same problem; enabling bluetooth will solve your cap at 54 mbps with the intel wifi. I don't know why Lenovo designed it to be like this, maybe something to do with the antenna. Anyway, hope it helps

  • Is it worth upgrading from a 15 " 2.4 Ghz MBP to a new 17" MBP?

So I've had my 15" MBP 2.4 GHZ, 250 GB model for over a year now.... I've used up about 200 GB so far, and it's been really buggy lately... Programs will take a long time to launch, and the machine seems glitchy. It takes a long time to boot up too... So I'm not sure if getting a new MBP would be worth the $$....
    What do you guys think?

You can always upgrade the internal HD, if you don't want to do it you would need to take it in to an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP), NOT an Apple store as they won't do it. It is a pretty easy process though that users do regularly and I believe OWC even has video's showing how to do it.
If you want to go the external then you can get a much larger drive, the three most popular brands on this forum are OWC, LaCie , and G-Tech. All are similar in specifications and performance and all provide very good build quality.

  • Upgrading RAM & HD on my 2.33 ghz C2D MBP, suggestions/opinions?

So I'm looking to upgrade my MBP 2.33 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, to 4 GB of RAM and also upgrading the internal drive to a 320GB 7200 rpm and I wanted opinions from people here.
I've been researching these upgrade options the last few days and came across a lot of people talking about the limitations that the system will have in regards to the utilizing all 4gigs. Apparently it will register all 4, but will only utilize 3.2 of the total 4 gigs of RAM.
Now I don't think it's that wise to install different sized pairs of RAM sticks, so I'm probably just going to go in for the full 4, but I'm curious to know that if the system does register all 4, but is only using 3.2, is it possible that certain software will still be able to utilize all 4 gigs of RAM?
Also, when talking about the internal drive, would it be better to stick with the 320 gb @ 7200, or for just $50 more, get a 500 gb @ 7200?
I do a lot of video and audio production and live performance, but I'm wondering it's worth the extra money to get more space, when I'm just going to be back it up anyway, since it is a portable. However, 500 gb's would be the same size as the external that I'm also looking to get, which makes me wonder if I should get the 320 gb and stick with the 500 gb external. So at least that way, I can keep dumping things, when my internal gets full. Cause I think if I have an internal that is 500 gbs I might get too used to have a lot of data on here.
Right now, I'm using a 160 @ 7200, so either one would definitely be nicer that what I have now. And some of the reasons I'm changing it, besides the capacity, is because it's seems to make a bit of noise at start up and I'm a bit paranoid it will be going soon. This beast has last a while, seen a lot of travel and been through **** and back, but it's never failed me. I kind of hate to change it, but also need to upgrade my OS and figured it might be a good time to just get everything up to date.
SO YAH, I hope that makes sense some how to everyone and that some of you could give me some possible opinions. I'm probably going to take my MBP down to Tekserve later to get this started, but wanted to see what people here thought. I always enjoy these forums, and value a lot of what I read here. So let me here it!

I cannot say for a fact, but from everything I know/understand about Macs and computers, I'm confident the answer is "no."

Unless you've found some sight-unseen deal on a 320, you should be able to get a 500 for less than $50 more.

But until it is backed up, more storage is nice. And if for whatever reason you cannot backup to the portable HD, that extra room could come in handy.
However, 500 gb's would be the same size as the external that I'm also looking to get, which makes me wonder if I should get the 320 gb and stick with the 500 gb external. I suspect that will be true. HDs are kind of like garages, storage sheds, and basements; the bigger they are, the more stuff they seem to collect. But as far as a HD is concerned, I consider that a convenience, not having to throw things away until/unless I 100% know they're junk.
Right now, I'm using a 160 @ 7200, so either one would definitely be nicer that what I have now. And some of the reasons I'm changing it, besides the capacity, is because it's seems to make a bit of noise at start up and I'm a bit paranoid it will be going soon.
Sounds like you depend on it for income, so being proactive would seem to be a good idea. I know of people who replace a HD every three years regardless of its "health."
