MBP 2006 17"

I have a MBP 2006 and the graphics card is fried. As it's built into the logic board it will be expensive to fix.
How can I retrieve the files please?

johnfromathlone,
if your MacBook Pro is on a LAN, you could connect to it from another computer on the LAN and copy the files from your MacBook Pro to that other computer.
Alternatively, if you have access to a FireWire cable and a second Mac with a FireWire port, you could boot your MacBook Pro into Target Disk mode so that it would act as an external hard drive to the second Mac; you could then copy the files from your MacBook Pro to the second Mac.
Another possibility is that you could remove the internal disk from your MacBook Pro and connect it to another Mac with a SATA-to-USB adapter, and copy the files from your disk to the other Mac.

  • Airport Extreme 802.11n (4th Generation) vs. MBP 2006.  The MBP is losing :(

GRRRRRRRRR— I feel like this is a version of a problem I see repeated here endlessly, but none of the threads I see about it is quite the same, or fixes my problem.       We have a network with:
Airport Extreme 802.11n (4th generation), connected to DSL modem.  Firmware 7.5.2
    MBP 2006, running OS 10.6.7 ****
    MBP 2008, running OS 10.5.x
ipads, iphone, shared printer, drive, etc.
Everything works fine EXCEPT the MBP 2006.  It connects to the network, works for a while, and then after a certain amount of time (anywhere between a minute and several hours) it's dropped.  The menu bar still shows a connection and full signal, but there's no connection (TCP or afp) and when I launch the Aiport Utility, it just says that no base stations can be found.   The menu bar seems to be lying. Using the menu to turn Airport off and back on (or sleeping the laptop) works to reestablish the connection.
I do not have this problem with the MBP 2006 on other wireless networks (at work, or at my other home in another city).  Just with the Airport Extreme
I've tried changing the channels, disabling IPv6 on the laptop and on the Airport Extreme, setting up a manual DHCP address, and changing the setting for "radio mode" of the base station from Automatic to 802.11a/n - 802.11b/g/n.   I also read that there might be troubles with "mixed" networks with both 802.11g and 802.11n, so I upgraded the Airport card in my MBP 2006 to an AirPort Extreme 802.11 a/b/g/n, which made disk sharing much faster when it's working, but didn't put an end to the cut-outs
Hjalp?  Why does the Airport Extreme keep dropping my MBP 2006 (or vice versa)?  Are there other things I should be changing or disabling?

    OK, two possible leads:
    1) Using the AirPort Utility, I disabled 802.11n, setting the AirPort Extreme to b/g only.  This seemed to help— I didn't fall off the network all afternoon.  (Setting it to 'n' only did not work, unfortunately, or else that would have been better, since it would have let me take advantage of the faster speeds for Time Machine to the shared disk)
    2) Soon thereafter, for seemingly independent reasons, we starting having trouble with our DSL connection.  We reset the AEBS to factor settings, which didn't solve the DSL problem (had to get a Windstream technician out for that), but since that reset, I've been connected with 802.11a and the MBP hasn't fallen off the wireless network once.
We'll see how it holds up, but for now, the recommendation seems to be first to reset the AEBS settings to factory default, and then try disabling 802.11n...

  • MBP 2006 C2D (A1211) Trackpad Replacement?

    Hi all,
I have a Macbook Pro Core2Duo 2006 (non-Unibody) that had a fairly common issue with the Trackpad; ie the clicker would often become hard to engage or get physically stuck rendering the machine impossible to use. I realised that pressure from the battery below was causing the issue, or at least making it worse, so I removed the battery from the battery bay to carry on working, even though it didn't actually look swollen or deformed.
Anyway, thinking I might actually be able to rectify the trackpad/clicker issue completely by pushing it up a little to give it more clearance with the battery installed I applied a little pressure with my thumb massaging the trackpad gently from underneath while the battery was out. This has made it much worse and in fact it's now unusable! I can't even use an external mouse clicker because the trackpad is stuck on permanent 'select' and the cursor movement is also erratic. I think I probably need to just change it. Has anyone attempted this? I know I can just swap the whole top case containing the trackpad/keyboard, but my current top case is in mint condition, and I only really want to transplant the trackpad from another one. Can this be done? I can find no info on it, but someone told me it was plastic welded in and do-able with a bit of patience. Please advise!
    Thanks!

Hi, I bought another broken MBP in order to take off the entire top cover/keyboard and transplant it onto my one. In the event though I didn’t need to fit this. Once I'd removed the battery and allowed the Macbook to settle for a few weeks(?) the trackpad started to function again, fairly reasonably. It very occasionally clicks a little, but is otherwise fairly functional. It seems to have returned to it's normal physical position, as imperceptible as that may have been, without me doing much.
If you want to fix your’s buying a replacement top cover may be the simplest solution, since the trackpad on these models isn’t designed to be a replaceable part. Good luck.

  • MBA 2013 vs MBP 2006

I have a 15" Macbook pro from 2006 (october-ish, I think) which has a 2.33ghz core 2 duo, a 128GB SSD, and 2GB RAM. It's not the fastest thing in the world, but it is perfect for software development and things like that.
However, I'm starting college in the fall and am looking for something a lot smaller. The 2013 Macbook Air looks enticing (13" most likely), but looking at the specs I'm not sure if it will out-perform my almost 7-year-old mbp at my regular tasks. I don't play many games on this thing, and 3D modelling is very difficult for me on a trackpad, so 3D graphics performance isn't a priority. I mostly do software development for mobile devices, and that requires lots of RAM for the IDEs and virtualization for virutal machines/emulators. I probably won't be doing a lot of that on the Air because it would be mostly for school, but the likliness of me keeping two separate laptops are low, so I'd probably get rid of the MBP and migrate to the Air completely.
What I am most concerned about is, if I do decide to just migrate all of my (mobile) work onto my Air, would it be able to handle it? Bloated IDEs, device emulators, photoshop, and lots of multitasking. Would this upgrade have any major drawbacks? Especially considering MBAs can't really be upgraded unlike MBPs (like I put an SSD in mine).
This is technically my first mac. The last time I used a mac before this was one of those colorful iMacs from '98. So I don't know how significant an upgraded line is.

So many people think that since the MBA is small, thin, and light it must be like the PC netbooks - underpowered and mostly useless. Nothing could be further from the truth. The 2013 MBA outperforms my 2009 MBP which outperformed my 2006 MBP. Or to put it another way, I have a new 2013 iMac and there's nothing I do on it that I can't do on the MBA - though the larger display makes some things more comfortable. BTW - I program a lot in Java, Python, and Racket (a dialect of Scheme) and do most of my programming on the MBA. I'd recommend the 8GB upgrade especially if you use Eclipse. The other question you may be tempted to ask about is i7 vs i5 processor. The i7 takes a significant battery hit and while the benchmark shows significant improvement real world tests are less impressive. However the one thing I've not seen tested is compilation so that's something you might want to look into further.

  • Cover for MBP 2006 15"

Anyone know where I can purchase a hardcase for a 2006 MBP 15" in the UK? Tried Incase - they have discontinued them. Nothing on Ebay or Amazon. Has to be in new or excellent condition please.

    sig,
Never even heard of those - saw your first post and ordered one. Thanks for the link - looks as if they have some really nice stuff (all I have now is a 'standard' neoprene sleeve - the video sold me!).
Got it bookmarked now in 'case' some folks ask again.
    Thanks,

  • Replaced the bottom case on MBP (2006)...now screen is blank!?  Need help ASAP...please!

I just replaced the bottom case on my 2006 MBP (model A1211). I previously replaced the top case, optical, and disk drives and all has been running as good as new for months. I used the instructions on ifixit.com to replace the bottom case, following the instructions exactly. Now when I go to turn the computer on, the screen doesn't turn on. I thought maybe a connection or screw was loose, so I disconnected and reconnected everything. All connections are tight, no screws are loose or missing. What am *I* missing??

Nothing at all, guys? This has to be fairly common and I'm just missing something obvious?

  • What's the best HDD for MBP 2006

Old HDD is not dead, just comatose, need a new one. https://discussions.apple.com/message/16041070#16041070   I had 100GB stock, 7200 rpm.
    I'm leaning towards a Seagate:  http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Momentus-7200RPM-Internal-ST9500420AS-Bare/dp/B001 R4BBLU
Who has experience w/ this drive?  Advice? Recommendations?  Something else works better? Concerned about the following tidbits in reviews:
    1.  the hd I received requires a 5v additional power source which does not work with most macbook or macbook pro.
macbook will not recognize the hd that renders this hd useless.
    2.  The 7200 is fast, really fast. But in my macbook, it vibrates my whole table. Probably should have gotten the 5400 for my laptop.
    3.  Used in a 2006 MacBook. Failed in 5 months
I trust the advice on this forum far more than on amazon.  If anyone would care to chime in.

similar specs, mostly good rev.s at Newegg, but:
"You can feel & hear the vibration compared to the old drive.
Hmm feels like an extra fan is on...not crazy bad but it's there.
Not at all surprising. As I said "2. All other things being equal, a 7200RPM is going to vibrate more."
On top of that, luck also plays a part. Individual units are going to behave differently, within acceptable quality control parameters.
Other Thoughts: This drive comes with ShockGuard technology which conflicts with the MacBook Pro's SMS tech. I have a mid 2010 macbook Pro 13" and would get beach balls while trying to open files. Even if it was using TextEdit and some of my directory structure wouldn't appear while trying to open files.
I disable the SMS via terminal http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1934
and it worked like a normal drive. No more beach balls.
Not sure if this is the right drive for me or this machine..."
Not sure what to think about this.  Some first-hand, installed-in-a MBP-and-here's-what's-happening type feedback wouldn't hurt my feelings.
I hope others will be able to offer you first-hand experience, but if not, xlr8yourmac is a good place to look for more "reviews." If you're referring specifically to disabling the SMS, this is perfectly normal. Some HDs have built in "SMS" capabilities, and these conflict with the MBP's built in SMS, so one must be disabled.

  • MBP 2006 fans not increasing speed relative to heat, normal AHT, manual SMC

    Hello,
I have a MBP 17inch 2006 model. About 6 months ago I began getting lines across my display. I only recently discovered after some unexpected system shut downs and feeling the underside of the MBP that it was very hot. I installed istatmenus and found that despite temperatures of above 70 deg celcius my fans were still running at only 1000rpm. They don't increase above the minimum fan setting. Manually increasing the fans in SMC fan control works in cooling down the machine.
I ran an Apple Hardware Test using the original install DVD and holding down D on startup. No errors found on two runs. I assume it is a sensor problem, but should the AHT pick this up?
Thanks for any advice, it's not ideal to be having to adjust the fans manually all the time.
    Ben

    Hi Ben,
We've seen plenty of posts here where AHT did ID bad sensors, but that's not to say it always does. It does sound like a sensor, but try an SMC Reset. If that doesn't work, and you're within a reasonable distance to an Apple Store, I'd make an appointment with the "genius" bar, otherwise, an AASP.

  • MBP 2006, Crash during login, black screen, fans running high speed.

    Hello.
I'm having problem with my MacBook Pro 2006 model. OSX 10.6.8.
When I boot into OSX and log in then the computer crashes with black screen and fan start running on high speed. It usually happends when I'm typing my password but sometimes I can log in but then it crashes usually soon.
I can boot into Safe mode and Single user mode and everything is normal there.
If I boot from OSX install CD same happens. Its crashes. Same with from Install USB stick and from Disk warrior disk. Safemode and sigleuser mode is no problem.
It started one year ago when I puted the computer to sleep and woke it up. Then it crashed. So I just stopped puting it to sleep. Then after few months it started doing this during login but after one or two restarts then it worked. And now she does it every time.
Nothing in logs that gets my attention. I've tryed resetting SMC and everything else I can reset.
    Anyone had this problem ?
    Best Regards.
    Sverrir

I've been having this same frustrating problem, with the same machine (A1150, 1.83Ghz) although mine does it with both the AC and the battery. I was hoping it was the battery and just replaced it (the old one was almost dead), to no avail.
I thought it was working okay in Windows under Bootcamp until one day it decided to show off the same black-out/wild spinning fans symptoms. Grrr.
I've since run the following repeatedly, all of which have come up with nothing: AHT, Memtest, Hardware Monitor, iStat. I've been furiously monitoring the logs and not seeing anything jump out. I also cleaned the caches with Leopard Cache Cleaner and OnyX, and did an archive & install of the OS a couple of times. Lastly, I created a new user to see if there were problems with my start-up. Problems persisted.
Right now the only time I can keep it running is if I'm in Safe Mode. Not helpful, particularly WRT making a backup (i.e., I won't be able to use Firewire ).
Any more ideas/advice on this would be very appreciated. I'm ready to hurl my puter out the window.

  • Ethernet connection - OS X 10.7.5- MBP 2006

I can connect to Wi-Fi with no problem. I even did a router rest & I still can't get the Ethernet port to connect.
The MBP cannot run Mountain Lion due to the specs.
I'm pulling my hair out trying to find out what’s going on. I even reinstalled Lion & still the same issues.
What can I do? Is my port broken? What about using the terminal to trouble shoot?

Replacement System Discs can be obtained from Apple's Customer Support - US (800) 767-2775 for a nominal fee. You'll need to have the model and serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html

  • Would a mbp 2006 charger work for a 2012 mbp

Hi I'm new to this but would a 2006 MacBook Pro charger works on a 2012 MacBook Pro ?

    costa.bas,
not necessarily — some software might rely upon hardware-specific details which are present in your current MacBook Pro, but which aren’t present in your new MacBook Pro. Your safest option would be manual reïnstallation of your third-party apps onto the new MacBook Pro, and restoring your personal data onto your new MacBook Pro from your most recent backup of your current MacBook Pro.

  • MBP 2006 won't boot?

    Problem:
Suddenly, I try to boot, but I get spinning gear under the apple for a long time, then, spinning gear on bluescreen for quite a while, then blue screen, blank, then blue screen with moveable cursor.
    Background:
I used it successfully all morning, burning discs with an LG external op drive, no probs.  I installed any video converter for intel mac.  I powered down and when I rebooted, above symptoms.
    I have tried:
Reset PRAM/NVRAM (?) (held down cmd/opt/p/r at boot for 2 chimes), tried a safeboot (didn't work), and I tried starting from the inst. disc (held down "c") (didn't work)
Stuck on blue screen with cursor, no light on lid release button until I close the lid, but doesn't sleep(?) (not fading in/out of light) then no display when I reopen...
    What to do now?

    Update:
I'm hoping all hope is not lost.  I was able to "boot to the CD", tried to Repair Disk, says "Invalid Extent Entry", and "Disk cannot be repaired"
Tried an Arch and Inst, be failed after verifying the Install Disc, said, "Try again".
Any help is appreciated.  BTW, I got to the disc by holding the Opt. key (not C) at start..?   Saw Macintosh HD and Install Disc, chose the disc and Utilities menu for Disk Utility.

  • How to Restore from Time Machine in Single-user mode?

Hi there, I am trying to fix a Macbook Pro that has had its /private folder trashed and emptied. Obviously it won't boot unless you you boot in to Single User mode and I'm wondering if its possible to do a Time Machine restore from the terminal, I would need the 2nd more recent Time Machine image which is sitting on a Firewire HDD.
I was going to just see if I could find the orignal OSX install disk and just do a fresh install of the OS which I don't mind doing (since everything important is backed up in Dropbox), but I can't seem to find the CD anywhere nearby, so the Time Machine option would be much preferred.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure if this is related enough, but I just wrestled trying to restore from time machine too, trying to reinstall 10.5.8 after putting a new HD in my MBP, 2006 vintage.
That took sooooo long to get back to where I was before swapping disks; what did the trick was ordering a free copy of Snow Leopard install disk (free due to Apple trying to push people from idisk to icloud) which was rushed FedEx (yay) and which allowed me to access Time Machine where my ancient original OSX install disk had not.
And all it took was 2 weeks of cursing!

  • How to restore from time machine for another user login

I use time machine to back my computer which has multiple user login.
First I set up time machine backup using User A.   I checked that User B files in the hard disk is also backed up, and I can restore using User B login.
Then I changed the hard disk today and all users I need to recreate again.
After recreating users, I found that User A can restore files from time machine backup.
However, files originally under User B cannot be restored using either User A and User B.  The error message is
"The folder “Documents” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents."
    Anyone can help?

  • Command + R (Refresh) not working in Safari and Firefox need Help!

I been having trouble with Command + R (Refresh) in Safari and Firefox for a while, I used to have a MBP 2006 intel 2.4 running Leopard when the problem started, but since I was planning to change to a new computer I didn't pay much attention.
Recently I got a MBP w/ Retina and migrated the info from my old Mac to the new one, and it seem like the Command + R problem to refresh in Safari and Firefox has been brought with the migration.
Another pointer is that I have my mac setup in Spanish although it was setup in English before. This does not seem to be the problem.
Any Ideas on how can I solve this?
    Than in advance.

Recently Safari started slowing and presenting the infamous spinning wheel of death whenever page has anything flash in it. Since many pages have ads coming in on flash many pages are effected. I almost thought that I had a virus on machine, being a PC guy for 20 plus year prior you can get, pun intended, flashbacks of deadly blue screen etc. Was happening on both my machines readily apparent on homepage msnbc and the like. I cleared caches etc etc infinitum thought I was back on Windows for a minute. I know from listening to various Mac tech shows on twit.tv that Apple apparently is not fond of flash programming as evidenced that flash not on Itouch or Ipad. But what, trying to kil it on regular machines?
When I first came to apple a couple years ago I was using Google Chrome browser on MSFT macines and loved it but atthe time Chrom did not make Mac version. I used Safari and was happy enough UNTIL LATELY with it not to bother with other browsers. NO MORE, so went hunting and happily found that Chrome for Mac available. AMAZINGLY no problems so far msnbc loads, without exaggeration, TEN times faster than on safari, no spiining wheels of death EVERYTHING faster like someone gave my Mac's a B12 shot and restored them to how they used to be. Easily transferred all favorites over simple import.
So far only down side I have found was that bank statement pdf downloads and the like that Safari had bottom screen popup to one click download not on Chrome and print to pdf doesn't seem to do it right so far but I amstill playing. So when I do bank statements I fire up Sarari and suffer the speed.
There is no reason for this APPLE!!! If you are not going to have Safari be the best browser out there for a mac then you should dump it and recommend sometghign else. Please don;t be like MSFT and Internet Explorer junk!
