MBP 2008 On Last Leg
I bought my MBP back in 2008 at my university because I was tired of PCs. I had a Gateway then two HPs, and finally my Mac and it's been the best ever. However, I'm currently starting to run into troubles and I think it might just be do to age. I've googled, youtubed, and searched for about every troubleshooting tip I can find and not really getting any answers except, "It's probably your hardware." So this makes things difficult because I am also currently deployed and I use my Mac to stay in contact with family and friends as well as take care of finances and occasionally take care of some work and schooling when I have the free time. If my Mac finally just stops working, I'm going to lose the capability of all that. Yes we have MWR, but its super small and almost always busy. Time limit on it is only a half hour. Now apparently I'm suppsed to call Support to try and have them help me figure it out, but they want to charge me $19 because everything on it has expired. It's almost 5 years old, of course its going to expire. Don't really know what I'm supposed to do besides order a brand new Mac, but don't really want or can afford to drop the cash. What else can I do? Some of the issues I'm having are:
Mac will restart or shutdown on it's own. Sometimes when it reboots I also get a gray failure screen. Time that it stays on varies to a couple hours to sometimes only twenty minutes.
Screen flickers now and then and then produces a very crappy image which I have to restart to fix.
The Mac is getting super hot in the top left corner near the ESC key. I've noticed it get warm before, but this is actually slightly painful to the touch. I rest it on a laptop cooler and have those fans on, but it's really not helping. Some troubleshooting tips have suggested this may be one of the reasons that I'm having difficulties.
My trackpad is non operational. It went out about 2 weeks ago and I was forced to switch to using a mouse. Took forever to disable the trackpad when a mouse was plugged in through Universal Access because I could not even click with the track pad by simple touch or by pushing.
And finally, it's just become downright slow. I don't have a lot of programs or anything on it, but when I first had it, started up and everything went smoothly. Now just even opening Safari, the icon will bounce for quite awhile before it finally loads.
Am I going to just have to pony up the dough or is there something Apple can do to help me out? Thanks.
Your MBP seems to be on its last legs, and it's hard to figure out exactly what the problem is.

I have a feeling that my hard drive is on its last legs. it is old and only 150 gig. CAn I replace it and duplicate everything on it??
Your going to need to be able to make a copy of your data.
You may want to consider buying and using an external drive for your daily use.
I believe the g5's have a firewire 800 port.

Check to make sure you can reduce the speed to 1.5. Some 6.0 drives have a plugable pin to reduce to 3.0 then auto negotiate from 3 to 1.5.
You can buy a dongle for 15 to 20 dollars to temporarily attach a harddrive to your system.
You need an external Firewire drive to boot a PowerPC Mac computer [ a few G5's will boot from USB ].
I recommend you do a google search on any external harddrive you are looking at.
I bought a low cost external drive enclosure. When I started having trouble with it, I did a google search and found a lot of complaints about the drive enclosure. I ended up buying a new drive enclosure. On my second go around, I decided to buy a drive enclosure with a good history of working with Macs. The chip set seems to be the key ingredient. The Oxford line of chips seems to be good. I got the Oxford 911.

To boot from the external drive, hold down the option key when you poweron your system. Pick the drive you want. -
I cant believe Apple has discontinued the Classic without telling anyone - I need a new one and now they are all sold out!!!! Its crazy!! I have over 100Gb of music, in car, everywhere! And now when mine finally stops working (its on its last legs), I cant replace it as they don't do anything with the same capacity!! They have invented a great gadget and then stopped it! Usual big company mentality - oh well, time to start researching MP3 - no more Apple for me.....grrrrr

Wait. As per the suggestion in my previous post. There is after all, already an iPhone with 128GB capacity. Technically therefore, that would suggest that it is possible to produce a replacement for the Classic. But since I have no inside knowledge of anything Apple are planning, don't quote me on that!
Work on the basis that since your iPod is only "on its last legs" rather than "not working at all", it still has a useful purpose. Maybe by the time it does stop working, suggestion 1 will have come to pass.
I have no practical suggestion for avoiding a touch screen, it's the modern way!
Of course, if all else fails, and you end up with an iPod that has less capacity than your Library, you could resort to using Smart Playlists to manage your iPod, by using them to add and remove songs (for example, ones recently played that you don't want to hear for a while) and thereby keeping the songs on the iPod within its capacity. If that interests you, please ask and I'll explain it in more detail. -
Mountain Lion OS upgrade on MBP 2008?
Would you suggest upgrading a MBP 2008 with the Mountain Lion OS? My computer runs like the day I bought it but im concerned with all the chit chat about compatibility that I may get myslf into trouble here.... I do have Lion on it currently and have no issues......
Before upgrading consider:
Don't upgrade if you are in the midst of important work. Wait until you have finished.
If you are having problems with your computer get them sorted out before you upgrade.
Verify that any mission critical software will be compatible with the upgrade.
Do you need the upgrade?
Make a bootable backup of your current system before upgrading. This will make returning to your previous system easier should you decide to do so. -
Just yesterday, my MBP 2008 started making a strange fan noise, very intermittent and random, sounds like the fan is just a tiny bit out of alignment (or, forced out of alignment with small changes to the system's orientation). It's just loud enough to notice in a relatively quiet room, and at a particular pitch that's annoying as all get out.
Not sure if this is one of the noises that's been annoying MBP owners for years now. Doesn't seem like it, but if anyone else can provide an corroboration, that would be great.If there's an Apple Store nearby, make an appointment at the Genius Bar and take it in. The only sound the fans should make is from the air movement/ Having said that, it's pretty difficult to diagnose sounds without actually being able to hear them - thus, get a tech to listen

Thank u1. Hard drive sound on my System. I took my Laptop into the Apple Store and hand them look at it. I have the the 320gig 7200rpm drive. If makes a repeating hum sound (almost like a grinding sound) all the time. The Tech said that Apple knew about the issue and it has something to do with the vibration coming from the Drive and the Mounting brackets. He said that maybe some new Rubber gaskets might be used to fix the issue. But I've seen or heard nothing more about this. But this issue is just for the 320gig 7200rpm drives.
2. Black screen of death issue. I tried taking Ram out to see if that would fix the issue. NOPE.
I also checked temperature but that's not the issue. I can boot the Laptop up after being off and
very cool. And launch "World of Warcraft" or "City of Heroes" and cause them both to cause a Black Screen and a repeating 1/4 second sound from the speakers. And the only fix is to hit the power button. Now the way I can cause it to crash is go into either programs QUALITY SETTINGS and change it up to HIGH QUALITY or lower from that... and it instantly crashes. It seems if I leave it at a
lower setting it plays just fine. But in "City of Heroes" if it's on High Quality and running I can also force it to crash if I rotate the angle up or down all the way.
I got this Macbook Pro late 2008 model when it first was released. I want to know from anyone out there if you think Apple should replace this Laptop due to having both of these issues. I don't really think that a Software patch is going to fix this issues. -
I have three quick questions to ask:
1. My MacBook (bought in late 2008, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 160 GB HD, running Leopard/10.5.8) boots up quite slow. It can take a while to boot up and shut down.
Question: What should I do to reduce the boot up time?
I haven't done a clean up for a while, and am a MacBook newbie (after 4 years, still) for the tools. I think I need to remove some applications but don't know exactly how. Also I am looking for stuff like System Defragment / Compression (tools available for Windows OS) to tune the hard disk performance, if possible.
2. Sort of related to this slow boot-up time - should I bother to upgrade to Snow Leopard (pay $ 29.00) and then upgrade to Lion (another $ 29 ?) for some 250 new features that I am not exactly sure if I will need it (or my 2008 MacBook can handle it well)?
My friend has a 2011 MacPro which he let me use it for a while, so I think I am already using Lion, but frankly I can't tell much difference from the user experience (am just a very average Mac user!).
Question: Should I bother the money and the time (I heard the downloading and installation time for Lion is very long) if all I care is boot-up time?
3. One last question - How long can my MacBook last? Is there a way to find out the battery life? Any indication that my MacBook might be on the edge of its life cycle anytime soon?
I heard that typically the life for a laptop (PC or Mac) is 2 years. I am not a heavy user, and I guess that's why my MacBook is still alive after 4 years. But should I expect that to be failing any time soon?

I own both late 2008 MB Uni with 2Ghz and a brand new late 2011 MBP 13 inch.
I have lion running on both Macbooks with no slow down or issues.
The late 2008 I upgraded to 8GB Crucial DDR3 Memory and 320GB Seagate Hard Drive. Total cost to me? $140 CDN ( i live in Canada ).
My MB Uni's battery has 1047 cycle count and I still get 3-1/2 - 4 hours of battery life depending on what applications I'm using.
As for typical life of a PC or MAC ( I own both ). The PC's life is shorter than a MB. I have a 4 year old Dell Vostro that I had to do a RAM upgrade so Windows 7 would run properly.
My late 08 MB had 4GB of RAM when I upgraded to Lion with no issues. i just decided to go 8GB because it was cheap.
A 2GB MB will boot up and run faster than a 4GB PC with windows 7.
Nothing is obsolete if you can still do your stuff on your MB.
To make it boot up faster, see what's loading on startup and take them off if you don't need them. -
MBP 2008 15" Kernel Panic with chrome?!

I have been having the following problems with my MBP 15" Late 2008 with Mavericks installed.
Frequently, opening google chrome crashes my entire system. I can hard restart, but chrome will automatically try to reopen the pages that caused the problems. I thought it might be due to Sophos, but after uninstalling that, the problem persisted.
Activity monitor shows Chrome and Chrome Helper as the culprit, but I can't force quit it. Sometimes after hours, If I'm lucky, the system is usable again, but it's not a very good way to work.
my technical understanding is limited, so please try to help me in the most simple terms possible;) Appreciate it!

I would like to continue using chrome, because it is the only browser supported by ZenMate. For someone located in Europe, it comes in handy when wanting to use Netflix etx, smth other vpn's have been unable to do.
If the problem persists to this extent, I will hoever have no choice but to ditch chrome, like I said, I only use chrome so I can access these streaming services in the US.
The problem especially occurs when I want to update flashplayer, silverlight or mac updats in general. -
Black Screen of Death on MBP 2008 17?
After sending some email this morning and putting the early 2008 17" MBP to sleep, I opened it up and got a black screen. No response. Tried closing and opening a few times.
Then powered down, tried to restart. Still black screen, no response. The hard drive makes the customary "whirr-click" and the LED light in front goes on, but that's it.
I then tried a PRAM reset. Still black screen.
I then removed the battery and disconnected the adapter cable. Waited for a while.
PRAM reset: Still black screen.
Okay, now I'm really worried. I removed the battery, opened the memory hatch and [reverently] took out the two RAM chips. Waited a while.
Reinstalled the RAM, replaced the memory door, replaced the battery, reconnected the adapter.
Tried to restart.
Still black screen.
I also tried to start the MBP up in Target Disk mode; it did not show up over the FireWire connection on my iMac, even when I was running Disk Utility.
And so I post, hoping that greater minds than mine can solve this problem. I have made an appt. with the local Genius Bar for tomorrow, but my experience with the Geniuses is that the good people at the Bar, while affable enough, are not necessarily well-labeled as such. Maybe folks here can offer me a better and faster answer!Well, I've printed out the TSB you linked me to; I think this is the problem because
(1) The computer in question is an "early 2008", according to Apple's response to the serial number;
(2) I've been having weird video problems--invariably followed by kernel panic crashes--and, upon examining the kp crash reports, kept seeing the NVIDIA graphics card mentioned!!!; and
(3) The incredibly long threads I've spent hours reading today on just the same problem tell the same sad story.
It's still covered under the AppleCare policy I bought, so I hope they'll repair it.
And, even if they repair it for free, I'll probably buy a new computer anyway...I'm surprised it's lasted this long after reading everyone else's sob stories!

MBP 2008 Running Slow and Diskutility problems on Lion
I have a 2008 MBP with 4gb of RAM. I upgraded via fresh install to Lion and ever since I've had this computer running literally 1/2 the speed it did on Snow Leopard. I've tried Googling and done everything everyone was saying to do but no changes.
I also noticed that no matter what I do, when I run disk utility and check permissions it comes back with files that have problems but nothing I do will actually repair them. I'm doubting this has anything todo with my current problems but wondering if anyone knows anything that might help.
I'd also like to know if there is any way to turn off the absolutely dumb full screen apps and mission control and launch pad stuff as i'm sure that all the extra graphics requirements has to be hurting my performance a bit. I'm not sure what all the desktop developers have been smoking lately but last I checked a computer was not a phone and trying to mimic the interface is just dumb. There is nothing useful about anything they've done in Lion that I can see. It all looks cool but trying to use it on a daily basis it just stinks.
Even the fullscreen apps that I though would be cool stinks because it takes longer to swith from one to the other and you loose the top menu while in it which requires extra effort just to see what time it is.
Anyway, if anyone can help point me towards a solution to get my computer usable again I'd appreciate it.

For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior. Versions 1.5.1 and later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as Lion Cache Cleaner, TinkerTool System, OnyX, or Cocktail that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):

Tri-Backup

Can I expect a Genius to give me again another battery? Should I rather not waste my time and buy a battery on my own? If so there are many brands on Amazon. Anyone more reliable than the Apple batteries?

I've got an early 2009 17" MBP with which i'm thrilled but in the last couple of days, the battery has begun to act strangely.
For no obvious reason I too get the *Check battery" message both in the menu bar and when I go into System Info. I've noticed the battery capacity which used to be at around 12000 mAh now hovers closer to 2000-3000, although the battery only has 145 cycles on it.
The most extreme case was this morning when I turned on my MBP. The battery read as 78% full which seemed right a I'd used it late last night. I then closed it and let it sleep for about half an hour. When I returned, the computer was turned off. I had to plug it back into the mains before it would start again. It then informed me the battery was at 0% and I once again got the "check battery" message.
I have trouble believing it could drain completely in half an hour.
Has anyone had a similar issue and if so, has anyone come across a fix?

Fails to connect MBP 2008 to Sony Bravia with HDMI Cabel
Trying to connect our MacBook Pro from year 2008 to our 2013 SONY Bravia by means of "Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Cable", the SONY Bravia will only show the background picture (Milky Way) of our MBP, but NOT the application that we have opened on the MBP.... Happy to receive any hints... Thank you!
Well, I have a regular macbook and one thing I found out is to make sure your tv cable box is off and that just your tv is on. I know that sounds simple, but I didn't realize this at first! The other thing I did was go on youtube and found a video of a guy showing exactly how to set it up, settings, connections, etc... It really helped me. I had to look around a lot to find one that I could understand, but that's how I finally figured it out!

MBP 2008 late crashes too often after update to Mavericks
My Macbook Pro 2008 late(First generation of Unibody) works perfect on OS X 10.8.x, but after update to Mavericks yesterday, it crashes too often, about 1 hour 1 time.
It seems com.apple.driver.AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement caused the issue, but I have no idea how solve it.
I checked the kernel extensions, found there are some from VirtualBox, so update it to latest 4.3.0 version, it have initial Mavericks support, but crashes still.

Hi guys,
I made a topic a couple of weeks ago about my horrendously slow Internet speeds (200kbps average when I usually get about 800kbps). I became insanely busy so I had no time to get back to any replies.
Anyway, I'm still getting really slow speeds. I can't stream videos on Twitch without the video having to buffer every 10 seconds or so. I can't download any games or any work files I need without waiting far too long (A patch for one of my games took 40+ minutes the other day). In the last 2 or 3 days, I've been having to reset the router due to the connection completely dropping.
I glanced through the forums and noticed a number of people are getting slow speeds and disconnects. This makes me wonder if it's my HomeHub or a general problem? I have a HomeHub2, and I've had it since we joined BT (About 4 or 5 years ago). I've heard they tend to die after a while; is 4 - 5 years "a while" in this case? If I have to replace the HomeHub, does the HomeHub5 work with non-infinity broadband?
