MBP 2010. Logic board ?

I just dropped off my MBP 2010. They said it was a logic board.
Symptoms : Fan running high. Beach ball , jerky cursor, very slow response time
I zapped the PRAM about a month ago. When some of the symptoms started. It worked for a while ...
Could the new OS download have anything to do with this? I have been using Apples since 1996 and hope Apple will rectify this issue if there is a fault in the manufacturing side or software .
No Appplecare cost 280 flat fee...

You got an excellent price - I try to let as many people that I can know of Apple's flat-rate repair policy. They could have been unscrupulous and charge you nearly $800.
I doubt that any software download could have caused logic board failure - I've never heard of it occurring. Faulty logic boards just turn up from time to time. Sometimes the symptoms can go unnoticed for years, sometimes they just fail at any given moment. Thank goodness, it's not  pandemic around the Mac community.
Once you get your logic board replaced, I think that you'll be pleased. And you did get a great deal on it.
Good luck,
Clinton

Does anyone have a definitive answer as to how long Apple will repair a faulty logic board outside of the warranty period? Mine is a 2010 model and my Applecare expried October 2013. Thanks!

There's a recent success story at the end of this thread. It is definitely worth being persistent.

  • Change MacBook Unibody late-2009 logic board with a MacBook Unibody mid-2010 logic board

    Hi everybody!
Is it possibile to change my MacBook Unibody late-2009 logic board (2,26 Ghz) with a MacBook Unibody mid-2010 logic board (2,4Ghz)? If yes, I have to change trackpad too?
    Thanks in advance!

GPU is in the logic board too (take a look: https://it.ifixit.com/Teardown/MacBook+Unibody+Model+A1342+Mid+2010+Teardown/293 1).. So what's the problem?

  • How much for new mid 2010 logic board?

So I had my hard drive replaced and ever since then when I am using my computer if it gets knocked at all the screen will either go solid black, blue or orange. Why? I brought my computer into mac life and they said that it was most likely a bad logic board and to take it into apple and they could tell me right then and there what it was. How much do you think that a new logic board will cost? Also, how long do you think it will take to be repaired from the time I take it to the apple store? Oh! and also whenever I close the lid to my computer it doesn't go to sleep. I have a mid 2010 13'' mbp. HELP

A logic board is an expensive repair.  Only the Apple store genius bar can furnish you with definitive answers to your questions.

  • MBP 2011 Logic board... again...

    Hi!
I start this topic to expose this failure, in apple history, without a proper support to client.
With 2 years I had the first problem, with logic board/video card of my MBP 17" early 2011. My luck was purchasing the Apple Care Extension, and was covered by it. Now, past another 2 years, this time without Apple Care, I have the same problem again!
What should I do to claim this product defect, more than proved by thousands of owners of this model?
Thank you very much for your attention and help.
    Best Regards,
    PSilva

    But why start another discussion?

  • Where can I find my MBP's logic board Apple ID?

    Hi everyone,
Just out of curiosity, and in case my 2006 MacBook Pro should decide to send another logic board to electronic equipment heaven, I'd like to know how/where to get the Apple ID for the logic board that's installed on it, with the following two provisions (bear with here, OK?):
    1) I don't want to have to open my MBP (been there, done that, can still feel the sweat under my armpits); and
    2) I don't want to invest even the minimum amount of money in the operation.
I suppose there's a way to know which kind of logic board (ie, its Apple ID) is installed in my machine. I just don't know how...

OK, thanks, that must be it, I guess. I can't see any trace of another ID anyway. By the way, do you know how come I've got two Ethernet cards listed in my System Profiler?

  • MBP 13 logic board failure

    Dear all,
I am writing to ask for your help. My MBP 13 laptop was dead due to the logic board failure diagnosed by the apple authorized technician.
He determined that the logic board is not properly providing voltage and connected multiple chargers but still won't stay powered on. The cost of a logic board is $426 and $100 for labor.
Worst thing is, my laptop is out of the warranty...my original warranty expired just a week ago and I did not extend it since I had thought I had purchased it in August last year and I still have time to do this later.
    What shall I do now?
Thank you very much for your kind attention.

For future reference, seeing as Apple have agreed to cover the repair cost, all goods sold have an certain life expectancy and should be 'fit for service' for that period. For most computers its about 6 years.
I've recently needed a logic board replacement and Apple refused to do the repair free of charge because I was out of warranty (my iMac is over 3 1/2 years old). I got in touch with Trading Standards who agreed that according to consumer law 1979 I should expect my iMac to be working. Trading Standards provided me with letter templates to send not only to Apple (I purchased mine directly from them, if you purchased it elsewhere then your claim would be with the retailer), but also my credit card company as I used my card to make the purchase.
After a number of letters, emails and phone calls I now have a fully repaired iMac without any cost to myself.
It may take a little while (about 3 months for mine) but it's worth chasing. Trading Stadards were very helpful. They even checked out the T&Cs for me because Apple are based in Ireland so may not have been bound by UK law but it states in their T&Cs that they are.

  • Macbook Pro mid 2010- Logic board not working

    Hi,
Can logic board of Macbook pro mid 2010 damage in switch on and off or while loading OS mountain lion?
    Can you give solution.
    Regards
    Sudesh

If you have tried a variety of devices on both USB ports, and they all work on one and not on the other then the best option is an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.  The evaluation will be free regardless of warranty status.
    Ciao.

  • Macbook pro 2010 logic board upgrade?

I have a MacBook Pro (2010) and I was wondering; is it possible to replace the logic board with a newer one? (from the 2011) Will things like the the thunderbolt port work? If it is possible, can someone direct me to some information about this?

This is possible but you will have to make alot of part changes. To fit in the 2011 logic board into the 2010 macbook pro, you will need to change the display to a 2011 model because the cables are more (webcam, wifi cables) and also you will need to change the topcase if you want all screws to be in place. The 2011 topcase has a screw hole positioned just under the mic while the 2010 topcase has the screw hole positioned closer to the dc jack. If you choose to fit the 2011 board into the 2010 topcase, you may find that the screw hole underneath the mic will be in contact with components undearneath the logicboard. A quick fix might be to use a file to reduce the height of the screw hole to avoid this contact (Do at your own risk). Furthermore, you will need to replace components like the speakers, wifi/bluetooth board, cable & middle frame.
I hope this helps? Let me know how you get on

  • MBP 2011 logic board failure

    Hi!
I had a logic board failure a while ago. i got it replaced and now i just had the same issue that i had just before the crash of my previous board.
    I have a late 2011 mac.
so this is what happened first:
i was working in photoshop cs6 and my display suddenly moves for about 10 centimeters to the left. the left side shifted to the right side actually. and there were artifacts everywhere.
i rebooted, all was fine again, but soon thereafter it happened again, and again, every time on booting photoshop, and after that my macbook just stopped loading at the apple screen, and it had horizontal green lines.
i was told that my graphic card crashed that was on the logic board, you know the drill.
when it crashed i was scanning an image.
so today i was working in indesign cs6 and i was printing when my screen shifted again. i rebooted, all is fine. i noticed that i was using the same (old) USB cable as when i first got the crashes.
i was wondering now, could it be that an external USB device, or cable, could make a crash and even kill the logic board? i paid 650 euros for a new logic board and sure as **** want this thing working properly now.
    thank you alot!
    Mathieu

Please ***Send Feedback to Apple:*** This is the most important. IF there is going to be a replacement program, you're going to have to start an official case with them. Might as well do it now. This will also help Apple diagnose the issue (we want a permanent fix, right?). They probably already have, but officially document your case!!!
Everyone should write a registered letter to Apple reporting an official complaint:
    Apple European Headquarters:
    Hollyhill Industrial Estate
    Hollyhill, Cork
    Republic of Ireland
    Apple USA:
    1 Infinite Loop

  • Whine and mbp 1,83 ghz new logic boards

I've seen at least 2 posts saying that 1,83 mbp's logic boards are being replaced due to the whine issue. Is that true? anyone had the logic board replaced and the whine actually stopped? I'm sorry if this is a repeated question.

I second this. I bought mine the day before they did the price change. I am not having any issues with mine and very happy with the machine. I did't think it is worth the .17ghz to maybe get a problamatic machine. So I went to the store and asked for the price adjustment. They gave me $100 back. this is a good start to getting 1gig of memory added to my machine.
    cheers

  • Sound & Video stutter after logic board replaced?

About 9 months after having my MBP, my logic board died. I went to the mac store, and the replacement went fine.
Only two days after getting my MPB back, I noticed problems with the video and sound. If I would have both iTunes and Photoshop (or illustrator or Cinema4D) open at the same time, both my video and sound output would "lock up" (freeze) for about 10 seconds, stutter for a minute or two, and then run rather sluggishly.
Since this was not normal operation, I figured I would compare the framerate I got in World of Warcraft to my old framerates. With the original logic board, I was able to pull down 40-75 frames per second and have all the sliders in the middle. With the new logic board, I have to bottom out the video settings to get a whopping 6-9 frames per second. Again, something was not right.
I brought the MBP in to the Apple store and spoke with a "genius". I was able to recreate the problems (Both the itunes/graphics heavy program and WoW fps) and was told that "your computer is working as intended. You could buy a newer one, that may fix the problem but there is nothing we are going to do." Needless to say, I left rather angry.
Since there was allegedly no hardware trouble, I decided I could fix the problem by throwing another gig of ram at the computer. This did not fix anything. As of now, my sound will degrade to a 2-second bleat of static that repeats, even after closing any sound application, and the video will stutter and freeze even when only using that one program. The MBP has also started emitting an intermittent, high-pitched "whine". This is not acceptable, and since I am using these programs daily, I need this computer to act as more than a $2000 paperweight.
    What I need help with:
    A) Is there any diagnostics I can run to figure out what is causing these issues?
    B) Is there a specific thig I should ask the people at the genius bar to look for, to ensure that the problems will be fixed?
    C) Any other ideas to keep me from throwing this computer in a tub of water?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Unfortunately, not all geniuses are really geniuses. You might want to try talking to a different person, maybe through Apple Technical Support on the phone. You might be able to talk to a more senior level person that way. The difference in frame rate are striking, and it argues that there is still a problem somewhere.
Do you have 3 year Applecare? If not, you might want to get it since you are having problems. In any event, if you are close to the end of the warranty period, then you need to get a case number. With a case number, you can prove that the problem first occurred under warranty, and Apple will honor the warranty until it is fixed.
As for diagnostics, have you run the Apple Hardware Test or the Tech Tool Delux hardware test? The AHT should be on install disc #1, and the other comes with 3 year Applecare. It's possible there is a hardware issue that is causing problems. If so, you will get an error code, and that is definitely something you can take to the genius.
One thing that can be done is to reinstall the OS--a lot of trouble I know, but it eliminates the possibility of corrupted software as a contributing factor.
As for the whine, it could be either a fan or possibly the hard drive. You could download "iStatPro", a widget from the Apple site that will allow you to monitor the fans and see if the whine occurs when the fans speed up or something like that. You can also check your CPU usage, and verify that there's no background process running amok and contributing to your problems. And if the hard drive is making the whine, maybe it has a problem and is contributing to the slowness. Back up your data, just in case.
Hopefully, the more experienced and knowledgeable members of the forum can make further suggestions. But I think if you can go to Apple and tell them what you have tried and done, and maybe even eliminate some things as possibilities, it will help them to help you to zero in on what is wrong. As time goes on, these machines become ever more complicated, and not easy to diagnose.
    Good luck!

  • Replacement of the logic board of mbp 15" 2010 mid

Recently, I replaced the logic board of my mbp 15" (2010 mid ver.).
By the way, since then, I can't recover my mbp via internet recovery.
    I found a message "Apple can't recognize my computer ~~" blah blah~.
    Is this ordinary ?
Anyway, I found a software update (maybe EFI Firmware) that makes possible the internet recovery.
But, the software is not installed.
It says my system doesn't support the update.
    Is this ordinary ?
After the replacement, I have observed several weird phenomena even though I can't say them clearly.
very long delay of app launch.. or finally fail to lanuch an app. fail to install Mavericks.. and so on.
But, AHT doesn't find any hardware error.

Here.. the problem is... I can't do clean install Mavericks.
I have tried to install Mavericks cleanly several times, but I failed.
In the last step of the installation (usually user configuration step), my mbp stops. not working.
    I don't know why..
My current OS is mountain lion.. the installation of this was also very tough work.
In the middle of the installation, mbp suddenly stops (so I reboot 2~3 times by force).
I guess all problems are caused by the replacement of logic board.
But, as I mentioned before, the result of AHT is there is no hardware problem.
Can an engineer of apple repair center find out any hardware failure even if the result of AHT is no hardware error ?

  • 2010 MBP 13.3 Lags and Fan on High Logic Board?

    Hello Everyone,
I recently was given a 2010 Macbook Pro 2.4 13.3.  When I got it the computer lagged really bad, and the fan is stuck on high.  With that and the backlight for the keyboard not lit, I suspected the logic board but when I went to disk utility I could not see the hard drive and it would not show any partitions.  I replaced the hard drive and booted the computer in internet recovery and the same thing happens, when it is on during internet recovery, when you are selecting the wireless router the mouse works great and it is super fast, but as soon as it begins to load and start the internet recovery it starts lagging really bad.
One weird thing I noticed that its doing was during one of the installation process the fans slowed down to normal for about 30 seconds. During this time the mouse did not lag and the thing was moving quite quickly.  But every time I attempt to reinstall OSX it says it was not able to install the program because of a missing file, and quits.
So no I can't reinstall anything. the keyboard light is out and the fans on high.  I tried SMC reset and NVRAM and neither made a difference.  So I took the logic board out, cleaned it super good, shows no signs of liquid damage or corrosion.  Reinstalled and still the same issues.
I guess the long story question here is do you think its a logic board going bad?  I am going to try and reboot with an individual stick of ram to see if that makes a difference but I feel the combination of the lights out and the fan on high tends to make me think that the board is not happy.
Any thoughts,  and if you think its a board, any suggestions where to repair or replace for the best price.  For a free MBP I am not afraid to spend a few bucks to add this to my arsenal of macs.
    Thanks
    Keith

2010 shipped with 2 DVD.  The AHT is one one of those DVD.  Boot off the DVD by holding the c key.
    from the link above-
Using Apple Hardware Test on computers with OS X 10.5.5 to 10.6.7
AHT is located on the Applications Install Disc 2 and should be included with your computer or the MacBook Air Software Reinstall Drive on a MacBook Air (Late 2010). To start AHT on these computers make sure the Applications Install Disc 2 is inserted into the built-in optical drive, external Apple Superdrive, or for the MacBook Air (Late 2010) be sure the MacBook Air Software Reinstall Drive is inserted into a USB port. Please then follow steps 1-6 outlined in the "Using Apple Hardware Test on computers with OS X 10.7 or later" section of this article.

  • Advice for faulty logic board (early 2010 MBP)

So my logic board needs replaced.
I went to the Apple store and they told me as it is under warranty that they will replace it for free. Im not sure how its under warranty as its over 4 years old? Although I have heard that this issue is common and Apple are at fault for the logic board issue?
Anyway I get a call a couple of days later to say that as I swapped out my optical drive for an HDD that it has voided my warranty. They now say it is going to cost £416 to fix!
I just want some advice as to what people think I should do really. The laptop cost around £1800 when new but is probably not worth half of that now if it was in working order. Should I suck it up and pay the price? Should I sell the laptop for parts and buy a new model? Should I try another Apple store?
I was also considering swapping the optical drive back in and bringing it to another Apple store but are there records kept of my serial number etc. where they could still tell?
    Any advice would be appreciated.

Buy a new computer or fix yours. Apple will provide no support for it since you voided the warranty.
