MBP 2011 CRASHES SCREEN GETS WRONG EMITS SOUND.

It has happened a couple of times during last couple of months.
After a couple of hours of being on and mostly surfing the web, my computer crashes and then the screen seems to be like wrong and then it starts to emit sounds.
I'll leave a picture.

My bad - thought that it MIGHT have been a late 2010 with the bad NVIDIA card.
Clearly, you have a hardware problem with your GPU. The best advice that I can offer is to take your machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them run diagnostics. There was a rather long thread here with people having problems with Early 2011 GPUs... not enough for a recall, I'm suspecting.
Do you have the extended AppleCare Protection Plan? If your problem is with the GPU, a logic board replacement would be in order and that can be quite costly.

  • MBP 2011---White Screen of Death AND MORE!

    Hello,
So I've got the white screen of death on my later 2011 MBP. I've been reading all the other forums and the other discussions for the last 3 weeks and I know what I have to do to get it to at least boot up, but it will not work. I tried all the reset ram options, I tried booting my computer in recovery mode but it wont go in any modes. I connected it to another MBP in target mode and repaired the disk after the verification failed and it still didnt boot up or let me go into any recovery modes. I did the target mode again and ran the repair and verify another two times. I then erased everything on my hard drive while in target mode using the disk utility erase function and now this is where I am...stuck! I don't know if that was the right thing to do it was probably in haste but I am stuck and need some help. Pleaseeeeee!

    Thank you for your replies...
jmrmb80 - Yes the device is still recognized by the Desktop Manager.  I reloaded the OS on it this morning and the App Loader says it was successful - but on reboot the white screen loads and thats it.
billrobinson - I haven't dropped the phone since I bought it.  I wish I had b/c then I could blame it on something.  My friends drop their phones all the time, spill stuff on them etc.... and I do nothing - and my phone blows up

  • MBP 2011 Crash/Freeze/Restart

Recently, my 15-inch, Early 2011 MacBook Pro has started crashing/freezing/restarting/whatever-the-right-terminology-is. It's a 2GHz Intel Core i7,  8GB 1333MHz DDR3 RAM (I upgraded it). Graphics card is AMD Radeon HD 6490M 256MB, or the Intel 3000 that comes integrated. 500GB HDD. I'm running OS X 10.9.4.
What happens is one of several things: it stops whatever it was doing and shows me a screen that has thin, vertical green and black stripes on it. It stays like this until I shut down the computer by hitting the power button. No keys or moving the mouse does anything. Sometimes, it will show graphical glitches that change for about 5 seconds before freezing on one and forcing me to shut down the computer. The last two times it has frozen, the screen just went black. The screen was still on, it just showed all black. Again, nothing I can do will unfreeze it, I have to shut it down.
It has shut down under several circumstances: I am playing a videogame, such as Hearthstone or Civ V (always with lowest graphics settings and not in fullscreen), watching Netflix/YouTube, or recently, just browsing the internet or typing on Skype. The problem started occurring only when I had been using the laptop for a few hours. Now, it will do this even if I have only used it for 15-30 minutes. It doesn't occur all of the time, so I've been having trouble determining the cause.
I called AppleCare, and they had me do some sort of re-route where I shut down the computer and held down a few keys before restarting it. This did not fix the problem.
If anyone can provide me with some help, that would be great. I can provide more details and answer any questions.
    Thanks!

If there is nothing else shown on the page other than your verified purchase date and that your limited warranty has expired, then I would guess that it is not covered. Your best bet, just to be sure would be to contact Apple and have them check manually.
The serial number of each machine is unique and can identify when the MacBook Pro was manufactured, which is how Apple decide whether or not your machine is eligible for cover within the extension program as it only covers machines manufactured from and to a certain date.
The symptoms on the repair extension page are as follows:
Distorted or scrambled video on the computer screen
No video on the computer screen (or external display) even though the computer is on
    Computer restarts unexpectedly
The fact that you've described that your MacBook Pro restarts with GPU Panic errors would imply that it is actually experiencing the issue covered by the extension program, so I would contact Apple and find out whether or not it is covered by the extension program.

  • MBP 2011 Grey Screen. Normal Boot, Recovery Partition AND Network Recovery

    Hey Fellow Apple Lovers!
My Macbook Pro 2011 recently froze and afterwards I haven't been able to log into the system. On start-up I encounter a gray screen. I'm sure this problem is very common on in the Community.
    I have tried the following:
    SCM reset
    NVRAM reset
    Safeboot (ends with blue screen)
Tried to boot into the recovery partition (Gray Screen)
Network recovery. The application downloads the data after connecting to my network and then continiues to start up.. Gray Screen
Now I realize that at this point, we're probably talking about a problem with the HDD. However, I am slightly perplexed by the fact that even Network Recovery acts the same. Any specialists who might have some deeper knowledge about the inner workings of the MBP?
    Best regards
    Kristian Holm Sejersen

    Kristian,
The blue screen is what I would be most concerned with. It could mean, if you've a 15" or 17" 2011 model, that you've the faulty installed AMD Radeon GPU, as discussed here -> https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4766577?tstart=0.
Unfortunately, if you DO have this problem, it won't show up in either the Apple Hardware Test, which you can run, or in the normal tests performed by Apple techs.
If you've a 13" model, this problem would not apply.
The only thing that I can suggest is to take the machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP and see if your machine can be evaluated properly. If you do have a 15" or 17" and if you do have the problem of the faulty soldering, Apple will suggest a logic board replacement. That is only a temporary fix: a 'real' fix is having the GPU reballed and it's much, much cheaper than a logic board replacement.
Give a ring back - if you've a 13" machine, I'm not certain what the problem might be.

  • 'You shut down the computer because of a problem'. Mbp constant black screen crashing, can only hard reboot each time. Please help, latest report here...

Hi for the last few months my mbp seems to randomly crashing to black screen at seemingly unrelated times. Most frequent are after periods of sleep and sometimes when web pages such as youtube load. This crashing is getting more and more frequent and when it occurs only a hard reset with the power button has any effect. The screen goes completely black, no backlight, no keys work, the fans keep going and if there was a song/video playing it starts looping the last note/second of noise over and over until the laptop is reset. My worry is that if i take it to the apple store, it will decide not to crash on that day which would drive me insane as its been happening all the time.
I've sent lots of 'reports' off to apple and saved numerous panic reports, here is the latest one:

Any information on why this is happening would be so so so appreciated as losing all your work in a blink of an eye is unbelievably rage inducing.
    Thank you!

You have the MacBookPro6,2—the Edsel of Macs. It may have the logic-board defect that was covered by a recall program that has now ended.
Residents of the EU may be entitled to warranty service for up to six years after purchase.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present.
You may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility. If you decide to pay for a new logic board, test thoroughly during the 90-day warranty period on the repair. Some owners have reported that they went through as many as three replacement boards before getting one that worked.
If you don't want to pay for the repair, you may (or may not) be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a third-party utility to switch to it manually.
Often the problems start after an OS upgrade. If the upgrade was recent, and you have backups, then you can revert to a previous OS X version.

  • Upgraded to Maverick, now MBP 2011 has black screen while booting

I just upgraded from Mountain Lion to Maverick, and I am already regretting it. Upon installation, my MBP (2011) was running slow, so I restarted it. Now, when my Mac is trying to boot, the brightness is at (roughly) 25%, and I can barely see what's happening. It looks like the loading cursor is present onscreen. The good news is that I can hear the startup chime. However, after 10-15 seconds, the screen fades to black. When I press any key, I can hear the default error sound. I tried Command+R, but that didn't do anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Not sure what happened. Upon the umpteenth time restarting the laptop, the scree is now at 100% brightness. I was able to log in as well. All is good.

it really depends on what exactly the problem is.  take is to an Apple Store or AASP and have them look at it
But what have I done to get this problem? I don't understand.
You may not have done anything.  Parts can go bad on their own.

Just tried installing an update to OSX Snow Leopard.  Prior to trying to update OS, I was running V 10.6.3.  During installation, it locked up.  Although the screen tells me that the installation will be completed in less than one minute, that was two hours ago, and the computer won't permit me to shut it down via the power button, as I get an error sound.  What do I do now?  Help!

Hold the power key till it shuts down, it may take a little while, try holding it thru the warning.
Then if it shuts down restart and open Safari/Preferences, General tab, and set "Save Downloaded Files to:"
Select desktop, if desktop is not available in the the drop down menu, click other, then select Desktop from the column from the on the left.
    Then download this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
This will download the "stand alone installer"
Click on the installer pkg and follow the prompts.
    Hope this helps

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPad?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after the iPad shuts down, then press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds). Ignore the "Slide to power off".

  • MBP 2011 Screen brightness changing regardless of the ambient light

As stated in the subject my brand new MBP 2011 screen brightness changes on its own, yes i know about the ambient light sensor, but my screen is going from med brightness all the way to minimum brightness even though the ambient light is constant. yes I know i can turn it off, but why build in an ambient light feature that just makes the screen go to mimimum brightness when in a well lit room??
or do i have a faulty one??

I too have this problem on my spanking new MacBook Pro.  Called AppleCare and they said they weren't aware of this issue.
Meanwhile, this is my 1st mac.  Had it for a few weeks now.  Decided to open iTunes for the 1st time.  The whole MacBook Freezes, no mouse interactivity, reboot required.  This happens EVERY time I start iTunes which I no longer do.  Apparently it's a known issue which Apple has patched(unsuccessfully).  But hey c'mon, I mean iTunes?  This is one of the core apps which SHOULD be tested extensively against the hardware. When you consider Apple PROVIDES the hardware, this is simply unacceptable.  Unbelievable even.  I simply can't believe how poor this is from a major company.  But hey my MacBook Pro LOOKS GOOD right, so who cares if it's a technically malfunctioning piece of junk.
Here's my theory.  Is part of Apple's patch deliberately reducing screen brightness without user authorisation when the MacBook starts to overheat, all because they know they've been incompetent/negligent with their QA testing and the hardware can't handle the software?  If so, why have users not been informed?
I'm from Australia and we have this so-so comedian called Chris Lily who fans have taken to calling a genius, the joke amongst non-fans being the word genius has been dumbed down over the years to be almost meaningless.   Anyway, maybe a certified Apple 'genius' can explain the reasoning for the apparently deliberate brightness reductions?

  • Random crash : the screen gets frozen. ANy help ?

    Hello,
I am getting bored with regular crashes. Symptoms : this usually happens while I drag the mouse, click somewhere (it happens in various apps), then suddenly the clock stops. Nothing is possible then, just hard reboot.
It also happens that the screen gets totally white, or with some thin horizontal stripes.
I tried to fix the disk permission, they are OK, but still, the crashes happens pretty often.
I was used to that with a PC, not with a Mac...
Anyone can help telling what to do and how to identify the problem ?
    Thanks

Imac 8,1 here as well. Your issue was identical to mine. Out of Applecare so I opened it up, for the third time, got the screen out so I could access the NVidia 8800 MXM card. I took the heat sync off of the GPU and CPU. Cleaned the GPU and removed all flammable items from it. (I think it was just a foam pad, it's been awhile) I covered the little silver capacitor with alimunim foil to help protect it from heat and them I baked it chipside up in my oven for 12 minutes at 400F. I repasted the GPU and CPU with Shin Etsu X23 Aluminum Oxide compound. Reassembled completely and walla, no more white screens or lines or black screens.
My crashing would occur always at 140F or higher. Use a iStat to track that temp to see if yours follows the same pattern. Overall, I saved over $1000 in repairs by just researching and fixing this myself. NVidia used a high lead solder hwich is brittle and cracks when it heats and cools rapidly. The Shin Etsu keeps my GPU 10F cooler at idle and I haven't had an issue in about 4 months so far. I leave it on all the time too.
If you attempt this, make sure to research it. There are good videos online on how to do this. The Apple store will indicate you need special tools and a dust free room. You will need a Suction Cup, T8 & T6 Torx driver, probably an air can. I used my bethroom misted with fan sucking air up to keep dust down.
    Good luck.

Just turned on my MBP 2007 and the screen gets stuck on the light blue before the normal log in page comes. Any Clues?
Worked fine last night. It's running Snow Leopard.

Does your iMac fail to boot every time or only some of the time?  Here are some things to try:
    - Boot into "safe mode", which will run the equivalent of Disk Utility's "repair disk" operation.
    - Boot from the system install disc that came with that Mac with the "D" key held down to run the diagnostics.  Run them several times to see if any hardware problems are reported.
    - If you can't identify the problem or fix it any other way, download and install the OS X 10.6.7 "combo" updater.
    - If that still doesn't help, try reinstalling OS X 10.6 over the top of what's on the disk.

  • MBP 2011 GPU failure or software problem?

    Hello there,
since Januari 1, 2015 my Macbook Pro 15" (purchased in 2011) is having major problems! How things started:
I was just watching a movie on Netflix, pauzed it, went to the toilet and when I came back my MBP had a black screen. I could hear the fans working (when I pressed my head against the keyboard) but it did not respond to anything. All I could do was a hard reboot.
After reboot I got the Apple logo, but the screen looked not as smooth as before. When I looked closer I saw very thin, horizontal lines (color pink/brown?) across the entire screen. These lines were not perfect. They had a small break in the middle. After the Apple screen I got different results:
    - White/Grey or maybe very pale blue-ish screen -> Does nothing behind this
-----> This is also the most frequent result of a boot
    - Normal blue screen -> Checkered screen -> Back to the blue screen to end with a Kernel Panic screen
Since a few days I can "normally" boot again but it crashes after a while. I don't know what the trigger is. It may be coincidence but it always crashed when I tried to go on the internet or used an application wich used the airport (also used a cable). Maybe important to mention is that this "normal" boot happens after the "checkered" screen mentioned above.
-----> The "crash" in this normal boot happens like this:
    - Total freeze of the MBP
    - Crashes on a black screen (like I had before)
    - Crashes on a dark blue/purple(?) screen -> This is also the most frequent crash after a "normal" boot and happens faster and faster.
Safe boot: Sometimes a normal screen but most of the time a screen with pink, very low resolution bands (vertical) across the screen.
When I tried searching for solutions on the internet I immediately came across this:

The screens show exactly what I'm experiencing. The culprit in this case: GPU failure.
BUT, isn't it strange I don't have any glitching (apart from the boot in safe mode, the Apple Logo and the checkered screen) or distortion on my screen, that it sometimes has a clear screen, like nothing is wrong? Unlike many of the people with the GPU failure, I CAN boot the MBP with a normal screen, only it isn't very stable and it is only occasionally.
    Things I've done so far:
    1. Reinstall OS X (10.6.7) from the original installation disc.
    2. I have tried NVRAM and PRAM (cmd+option+P+R), no change.
    3. Verbose-mode (cmd+V). (the last thing I could see was something about the Airport) I did this 2 times. First time it crashed on a black screen after the Verbose-mode. Second time it got stuck on the grey screen.
    4. Single-user Mode (cmd+S). Everything looked fine, no errors on hard disk.
    5. Start in Safe Mode. (Shift). The bar doesn't load until the end but it boots in safe mode, but with the pink bars on the screen
    6. Re-apply of thermal paste on GPU
The programmer at our work has over 30 years of experience with Apple and has never seen something like this. He also doesn't understand why it would be a hardware failure, because the glitches are "symmetrical", it can boot "normally" and he can't find anything wrong with it. He is now looking for something in the software wich may cause the MBP to crash. Could it just be a software problem? As I said before: It could be a coincidence but the crashes (after a "normal" boot) always appeared after trying to connect to the internet, using the internet or using an application that uses the internet (like the App Store -> I was trying to download Yosemite, it crashed around 70% of the download). And in Verbose mode the last line said something about the Airport and then it crashed.
My MBP is a Macbook Pro 15" (bought in July 2011), 2 GHz Intel Core i7, 4 GB 1333 MHz DD3
AMD Radeon HD 6490M, Part nr. MC721FN/A.
I am running Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8
I spent the last two weeks on the internet to understand that if it is indeed the GPU that is failing, the replacement of the entire Logic Board is necessary, wich is VERY expensive... This cost would be more or less ok for me, but I read about failing after replacement, a LOT. Why would I pay so much money for a repair that only lasts just over 90 days? That is ridiculous!
Sorry for spelling/grammar mistakes, English isn't my first language and really thank you in advance. This MBP is impossible to replace (no money...) so I hope someone can help me.
Ask away if I did not provide any information that is necessary for troubleshooting.

    Anyone?
