MBP 2011 Grey Screen. Normal Boot, Recovery Partition AND Network Recovery

Hey Fellow Apple Lovers!
My Macbook Pro 2011 recently froze and afterwards I haven't been able to log into the system. On start-up I encounter a gray screen. I'm sure this problem is very common on in the Community.
I have tried the following:
SCM reset
NVRAM reset
Safeboot (ends with blue screen)
Tried to boot into the recovery partition (Gray Screen)
Network recovery. The application downloads the data after connecting to my network and then continiues to start up.. Gray Screen
Now I realize that at this point, we're probably talking about a problem with the HDD. However, I am slightly perplexed by the fact that even Network Recovery acts the same. Any specialists who might have some deeper knowledge about the inner workings of the MBP?
Best regards
Kristian Holm Sejersen

Kristian,
The blue screen is what I would be most concerned with. It could mean, if you've a 15" or 17" 2011 model, that you've the faulty installed AMD Radeon GPU, as discussed here -> https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4766577?tstart=0.
Unfortunately, if you DO have this problem, it won't show up in either the Apple Hardware Test, which you can run, or in the normal tests performed by Apple techs.
If you've a 13" model, this problem would not apply.
The only thing that I can suggest is to take the machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP and see if your machine can be evaluated properly. If you do have a 15" or 17" and if you do have the problem of the faulty soldering, Apple will suggest a logic board replacement. That is only a temporary fix: a 'real' fix is having the GPU reballed and it's much, much cheaper than a logic board replacement.
Give a ring back - if you've a 13" machine, I'm not certain what the problem might be.

  • During boot Yosemite shows a grey screen with the Apple logo and a progress bar - is this normal?

During boot Yosemite shows a grey screen with the Apple logo and a progress bar - is this normal?

    Same here after upgrade yesterday.
I can get OS utilities up using CMD R or holding the shift key (eventually), but if I simply then reinstall the OS will it not loose everything on my drive? I do have it backed up on Time Machine? What a nightmare - Apple Support does suck.  I am not paying £25 for them to call me to tell me how to fix a bug in their OS software upgrade.  Any help
Also does anyone know if it is possible to use time machine to go back to Snow Leopard? I have wasted much of the day on this now
    Cheers

  • Grey screen on boot problem

    Hi There,
I have a clean Vista install on a late 2008 Macbook aluminum. Some issues but love the combination. However, when booting the computer starts with a grey screen that lasts a long time before booting Vista. Feels like the software is still looking for a OSX partition. Anyone know of a registry entry/ fix for this?
    Cheers,
    BaliApple

    Hi.
Bali i'm new to MBP too but as far as i know there isn't any registry entry the registry part belongs to windows it has nothing to do with that grey screen. I think it might be the EFI but i dont't know. I'm still learning . I have the same problem in a way. When i power on the MBP that grey screen apears for more then a minute. After that a black screen with an "_" in the left side of the screen for another ~3m. I have tried PRAM reset and no result. The weird thing is that i haven`t done anything i only reinstalled my OS ( typically windows ). I haven`t touched the EFI partition either. What else can i try. Ow and one more question: If i upgrade the HDD how can this influence the MBP considering that it won't have an EFI partition anymore. Cheers.
by the way here is some info:
BIOS Version: Apple Inc. MBP41.88Z.00C1.B03.0802271651, 2/27/2008

  • What happens between the chime & the grey screen on boot?

    Hi,
My Mac Pro has recently started taking up to 30secs to reach the grey screen when booting. The chime happens shortly after (re)starting, and then there's a significant pause, where nothing seems to happen (even the Apple Display stays in stand-by mode), before the HDD starts reading and the grey screen appears. I tried using Verbose mode, but the data it prints to screen doesn't start until after the long pause, so…
Anyone know what the Mac Pro could be doing? I've no other problems with the machine.
    Thanks,
    S.

    Hi,
My issue has been solved, apparently by a combination of a PRAM reset and re-selecting the startup disk in System Preferences. My machine now moves from chime to Apple logo almost instantaneously
The AppleCare representative was thorough and walked me through various steps that narrowed down the issue, and his hesitant conclusion was that somehow, as hatter suggested, the Mac was taking its time to find the appropriate boot device - possibly as a result of a change I had made in my BootCamp partition (Windows 7) or as a result of a previous PRAM reset (as hatter suggested).
    Case closed! Yay!
    S.
EDIT: So, Japamac, it was presumably the "system selection" part of the post-Chime process that was causing the delay. Didn't see your post till I returned to respond with this post, but thanks for the effort anyway

  • Windows 8 Deleted Recovery Partition and Saved but No Boot

    Hi
I ve Hp Pavilion G6 - 2336el , i bought it 5 months before and 2 days before i installed Ubuntu but by mistake ubuntu deleted all partitions (included recovery partition)  and created one for itself.
by using DiskTest tool on ubuntu i recovered some files and full of recovery partition.
after that, for re-install windows 8 from recovered partition , i did set partition bootable by using another tool which was running on ubuntu.
now, windows 8 repair screen appears but im getting -a required device isn't connected or cannot be accessed- error.
i googled about this problem but the solution didnt work for me. (boot change from bios)
by the way , for precaution , i made an IMG file of recovery partition also (which is 14gb).
i tried burn a bootable disk with that image but didnt work because some files in img is too big for fat32.
after that i tried boot from EFI file but bios cant reach to Ntsf part. i tried to explorer IFE file in fat32 but i couldnt because IFE file which i ve is more than 13gb (same problem for fat32 file system)
    so summary :
i ve recovery part with files (install.wim , *.ife files...) but getting error.
i ve an .img of partition but couldnt make bootable disk
Maybe there s a tool for reach ntsf then i can boot from ife...i dont know i need ur help.
    what can i do?
im really so sad , already  i lost many important data, files , pics.. im living in italy and im a student (not italian) and i really cannot order another cd from Hp for recovery.
    Im waiting your help.
    Thank you.

well, i downloaded windows 8 64bit Enterprise Evl. from microsoft site as says here : http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Recovery/Windows-Vista-7-and-8-ISO-Image-file-Download-Links/t...
    and i installed without problem..
but before install the system with ubuntu live cd i booted pc and i found my product key which  is embedded in bios.
    then installed win8 Enterprise 64bit..
now my problem is activation, when i digit the key , before active it, it says under the box it s correct but when i click to active it then im taking the product key you entered will not work with this edition of windows 8 error..
    what should i do
    thank you

Sounds like you may have a harddrive issue.  You are probably going to need to get that changed out and then install the OS X again to get it going.

  • Blue or grey screen on boot

    Mac Pro 1,1; 10.6.4
On attempting to start up recently I got a screen in alternating shades of blue.
Trying to boot to a bootable CD gives me a 'you need to restart' grey screen.
Booting to the diagnostic works and finds no problems.
Booting in firewire target mode allows access to the HD and repaired some errors with diskutility but did not change symptoms. Subsequent checks show no errors.
Booting to an ubuntu livecd worked fine with generic graphics drivers (up to date drivers available but require a reboot).
Booting into safe mode has the blue screens alternating with a black screen with a white rectangle in the top left (about the size of an old terminal cursor).
Zapping PRAM doesnt seem to change anything.
Recent upgrades include +4GB RAM which I have removed and errors remain with the original 1GB RAM (2x512)
I have also replaced the graphics card recently, GT 8800 stopped working and I replaced it with another GT 8800.
The help pages on blue and grey screens seem to be mutually exclusive but both discuss removing peripherals and non Apple hardware.
Per above, I have tried the diagnostic/safe/boot CD options mentioned in both and the only option I cant try is removing the graphics card (unless there is a way to test a successful boot without a screen?)
I suspect it is either a graphics fault which ubuntu doesnt mind but OSX does, or a more complex disk corruption.
The next option appears to be erasing the disk with firewire/diskutil and attempting a fresh install (not sure why this would remedy the kernel panic on booting from CD).
Some logs have been populated in Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports, I can post fragments as required but am unable to interpret atm.
    Any suggestion appreciated.

Hello Tony from New Zealand (great place, I visited once):
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
Take a look at this article to see if it helps you fix the problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
If it does not, I think I would reinstall OS X 10.6 (upgrade from your software install DVD) over your existing system. Then I would run software update to bring everything to current levels.
A good backup before any software change is always a very good idea (I use both Time Machine and SuperDuper).

  • Getting grey screen on booting MacPro 1,1; only able to use Safe Boot

I have a Mac Pro 1,1 Desktop running Lion.
    Processor  2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256 MB
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
The issue I'm having is the computer started booting to a grey screen with the spinning wheel and would get stuck there. The only way I was able to boot was Safe Boot. From there I could access files on the hard drive and ran a time machine backup.
After doing some research, I read this could be hard drive failure so I bought a new 3 TB SATA WD hard drive, installed it, formatted with disk utilitiy and installed OS X Lion on the new drive. It booted up fine after the install.
On the next reboot, same grey screen. Now I'm back to only being able to use Safe Boot mode to access the computer.
I have now shut down the computer and removed the old hard drive.
I've tried resetting PRAM and no luck.
I tried to run the apple hardware test but couldn't get it to run no matter what I tried.
Any advice? I'm at a loss. I really love this Mac and don't want to replace it just yet.

I'm finding these entries in system.log.
I'm particularly puzzled by " Load com.apple.driver.AppleSMBusPCI failed.." and similar messages.

  • Some configurations such as a software or hardware RAID do not support a recovery partition and can't be used with Find My Mac.

I'm getting the following error message when attempting to invoke "Find My Mac"
Some configurations such as a software or hardware RAID do not support a recovery partition and can't be used with Find My Mac.

You have no recovery partition. This is a normal condition if your boot volume is a software RAID, or if you modified the partition table after running Boot Camp Assistant to create a Windows partition. Otherwise, you need to reinstall OS X in order to add a recovery partition.
If you don't have a current backup, you need to back up before you do anything else.
You have several options for reinstalling.
    1. If you have access to a local, unencrypted Time Machine backup volume, and if that volume has a backup of a Mac (not necessarily this one) that was running the same major version of OS X and did have a Recovery partition, then you can boot from the Time Machine volume into Recovery by holding down the option key at the startup chime. Encrypted Time Machine volumes are not bootable, nor are network backups.
    2. If your Mac shipped with OS X 10.7 or later preinstalled, or if it's one of the computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery, you may be able to netboot from an Apple server by holding down the key combination option-R  at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
    3. Use Recovery Disk Assistant (RDA) on another Mac running the same major version of OS X as yours to create a bootable USB device. Boot your Mac from the device by holding down the option key at startup.Warning: All existing data on the USB device will be erased when you use RDA.
Once you've booted into Recovery, the OS X Utilities screen will appear. Follow the prompts to reinstall OS X. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
If none of the above choices is open to you, then you'll have to start over from an OS X 10.6.8 installation. There's no need to overwrite your existing boot volume; you can use an external drive. Install 10.6 from the DVD you originally used to upgrade, or that came with the machine. Run Software Update and install all available updates. Log into the App Store with the Apple ID you used to buy 10.7 or later, and download the installer. When you run it, be sure to choose the right drive to install on.
