MBP 2011 - Hard freezes, Kernel Panics & .kext errors??
What the ******* is up with the new models of MBP? I got mine in early May and tried to install Windows 7. After a successful installation the system was rebooting and I just got a hard freeze. A grey screen, much like the old blue screens on windows machines... What´s that about?
After a re-install I just got to installing some of my other software which I always used on all other macs I owned before. After 3-5 different programs I got an error message saying that a file called something like "...io... kext" could not be read and had to be re-installed??? Just as I was copying my stuff after the 3rd install this happened again, but this time with a completely different program. I have a new MBP with original DVD-install discs and everything...
Anyone had any similar things happen to them??
Seems to be a software error, since the same configuration has existed earlier with the i5 processor. Although this version is the 13"...
Some things I already tried:
1. Installing with no other partitions but a whole HFS+ (Journaled)
2. Updated SMC and Boot-rom to latest versions using Apple automatic updates
3. Updated all 3rd party applications to their latest versions
4. Only original softwares installed
Hardware Specs:
13"
Intel i5 2.3
320GB HDD
4GB Samsung Original Memory
System Specs, software:
OSX 10.6.7
Boot ROM Version: MBP81.0047.B0E
SMC Version (system): 1.68f96
Please help....
Some people report no problems using 1600MHz RAM on a system that is supposed to use 1333MHz RAM but you may be the exception to that as others have reported similar problems.
I would return the RAM and get the 1333MHz that is speced for your system. Even though it may pass memory tests, it's really not the right RAM for your computer.
Good luck,
Clinton

10.4.9 Upgrade: Fails. Reboot results in Kernel Panic ACPI error
I am upgrading 11 MacBook Pros 10.4.6 to 10.4.9. Becasue they are all on a slow Wifi I am using the manual updates via a thumb drive.
So far 2 out of 6 have failed the install process. One gave me a general error. I tried to re-run the program but when I did the font for the drop down menu turned into all boxes with capital As inside them. In both cases when I have rebooted I have gotten a Kernel Panic ACPI error. I have tried all the Kernel Panic tricks mentioned in the 10.4.9 threads. I am now reinstalling on the two machines.
1 of 6 did the install just fine but is now stopped on the "Starting Mac OS X..." screen with a full blue bar.
Does anyone have any idea what is wrong? You may find the following useful:
From a recent article at MacFixit:
Mac OS X 10.4.9 Special Report: Update procedure recommendation
First, make a full backup of your current Mac OS X installation -- preferably a clone ( try SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner). If something goes wrong, or you experience a major incompatibility after updating, the backup will prove invaluable.
Next, if you are the cautious type, run a disk repair on the volume targeted for installation. You can use an n alternative startup drive or your Mac OS X installation disc. If you are starting up from your Mac OS X install disc, put the disc in your optical drive and restart holding down the "C" key. After your system starts up and you've selected your language, go to the "Utilties" menu and select "Disk Utility." Use the "Repair Disk" function. After disk repairs are complete, restart from your normal startup drive and continue.
Avoid performing any other operations (in Mac OS X or third-party applications) while the update process is occurring.
Performing other tasks during the update process potentiates various issues, including problems with prebinding (which is happening during the "Optimizing the system" phase of the update process) and others that can occur when files are being replaced by the update are also being read/written by the currently logged in user. You should not only refrain from launching applications or working with files during the update process, but also from putting the system to sleep, disconnecting/connecting devices, and other potentially interruptive actions.
In addition, before installing the update, make sure all Apple-installed applications and utilities are in their original locations. Moving one of these applications to a different location on your hard drive can lead to an incomplete update. Also, disconnect any FireWire/USB devices before applying Mac OS X 10.4.9 (except for your startup drive, if it is FireWire or USB, and your keyboard/mouse), then re-connect the devices one by one (checking for issues created by any particular device) after the update process is complete and the system has restarted. Also, note that the first restart after applying Mac OS X 10.4.9 may be abnormally long. Subsequent restarts should take place at normal speed.
And this further article from MacFixit is also very important:
When a Mac OS X update won't install with "Volume does not meet requirements for this update" message
The error message "Volume does not meet requirements for this update" may appear when attempting to install a Mac OS X updater or a full release from disc. Generally the problem falls into one of the following categories:
Make sure you are using the right updater (Server vs. client) There are usually a few varieties of the same Mac OS X update version. Make sure that you are not trying to install the Intel client build on a PowerPC-based Mac, or the Server build on a Mac OS X client system.
Although we generally recommend using the standalone Mac OS X updaters rather than Software Update, the latter method will generally correctly identify the copy of Mac OS X applicable to your current system state.
Retail vs. shipped-with-system (build numbers) Different Macs ship with different builds of Mac OS X, and one build may not be compatible with a different system. The build that ships with a MacBook Core 2 Duo, for instance, may not properly install on a Mac Pro. Hence you may receive the "Volume does not meet requirements for this update" message when mixing and matching systems and discs.
Some retail copies of Mac OS X 10.4.x may also be unable to install on some systems that require newer builds.
In addition, it appears that while some builds will install on specific systems, those systems will then refuse to accept subsequent updates. To ensure compatibility, inspect the following matrices:
• Mac OS: Versions, builds included with Intel-based Macs
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303315
• Mac OS: Versions, builds included with PowerPC Macs (since 1998)
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
and note that you should not use a Mac OS version earlier than the one included with the computer.
Combo vs. Delta Remember that delta Mac OS X updaters can only update systems version-to-version, e.g. Mac OS X 10.4.8 to Mac OS X 10.4.9. Combo updaters can bring any version within the scope of a major release (Panther, Tiger, etc.) up-to-date, e.g. Mac OS X 10.4.3 to Mac OS X 10.4.9.
Attempting to run a delta update on anything other than the directly precedent version may result in the "Volume does not meet requirements for this update" message. -
Help!!! Brand new MBP with Santa Rosa Kernel Panics when started with external HD firewire 800 after 20 sec...
I don't know what it could be???
Do you???
Thanx
JayI'm actually having a similar issue and I don't think its related to networking at all.
I'm currently working in a corporate environment where we deploy pre-built OS X images to machines. I recently upgraded my images to 10.4.10 before we got our first Santa Rosa machine. This image was built on a MacPro and worked on all Intel Macs down to a MacMini CoreSolo. When I deployed my prebuilt image to the SR MBP, it caused a kernel panic immediately.
Further investigation revealed previous builds of OS X, including 10.4.10 upgraded from any other model Intel Mac will kernel panic the SR MBP. Going backwards the SR Build of OSX will not work on any previous model Mac, as any other build typically does, but causes severe graphical distortion, as if it does not have the display drivers for the other Macs.
To make a long story short, I think your issue comes from the fact that your external hard drive has an older build of OS X 10.4 than the SR MBP will run (even though you may have upgraded it to 10.4.10). Anyone who can corroborate my story with some more testing, please chime in.
I haven't found a solution for this issue yet other than keeping a seperate Santa Rosa Core 2 Duo image for my deployments. -
ITunes 7 Kernel Panic Attack Errors upon Opening
I am really, really mad. Since I upgraded to iTunes 7, so far I have had a total of SIX Kernel Panic Attack errors. I am not lying. I used Disk Utility and checked to see if there was anything wrong, and there isn't. I am really, really frustrated. I can't even open up iTunes without the screen going black and telling me to restart my computer.
What do I do? Bring my computer to the Apple store and let them do whatever? And I have my music on my iPod, but if they had to I don't know-- reinstall iTunes, would I have the same issues?I have seen a lot of kernel panics since either iTunes 7 or OS X 10.4.8 (which happened almost at the same time). Still looking for a cause/solution.

Black flickering, freezing, kernel panics
Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help me out. My 2009 13" MBP seems to be having some issues and I can't fingure out what's going on.
Every now and then, the lower half of the screen will flash black repeatedly. This has happened in Safari in full screen and in Sketchbook Pro. While in SBP, the image will usually disappear, replaced with grey. I can usually still save the image, quit the app and reload. If it happens in Safari, the flashing will happen breifly, then the image will sort of stutter and spit and go crazy. When this happens, I have to hard start my computer.
A sort of similar thing happens when I play StarCraft 2. Once the game starts, at random intervals, the game will freeze. Sometimes, this is preceded by the black flickering on the bottom half of the screen. Sometimes, it is not. I spoke with Blizzard about it and, after having me trouble shoot a few things, they determined that I was having kernel panics.
Since updating today to 10.8.3, the Sarai issue seems to have fixed itself (so far). I haven't tried SBP yet but StarCraft remains unplayable. I had a full on kernel panic while the game was updating, and then a system freeze when I tried to play them game. No log from the freeze but I have included the kernel log below.
Now, I did update both the HDD and the RAM not too long ago. I'm not certain if there is any relation but I bought PNY 8 GB (two 4 GB) 1333 MHz DDR3. It shows up in my "About This Mac" and I did a hardware test that confirmed the RAM is OK.
I've searched the forum and I don't know if anyone is having this issue but I'm hoping someone can help me. I'm outside the warrenty and I don't know what to do. I don't know how to read the kernel panic log.
Thanks

I'm surprised to learn that you 'got by' with no kp's for four months! Oh, and just as a buying suggestion... I would shop the Crucial, Corsair or OWC websites for RAM - they guarantee Mac compatibility. As a matter of fact, go to the Crucial site and click on the System Scanner tab and download the small app that will report back to Crucial your model and suggest a RAM upgrade path for you.
Good luck,

MacBook Pro freeze/kernel panic while playing World of Warcraft
Hello, Is anyone else having a similar issue I'm having? I have not had a single problem with my macbook pro until I reinstalled World of Warcraft. When I login to the game, the system will freeze, screen goes black, sound jitters, no keyboard or mouse response, and I have to hard reboot the system by holding down the power button. To make matters more difficult sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. This only happens when I'm running WoW...I also have StarCraft 2 installed (another graphics/processor intensive game) and I never had this problem.
I read in the forums already about freezing issues and ran the Apple Hardware Test just to check the basics. Report came back clean (granted, I didn't run the full scan, just the quick test).
Below is my kernel panic report...any thoughts?

com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily 1.3.0Hi and Welcome!
It may help if we know the variant of your MBP. Some have serious video chipset issues that can complicate troubleshooting. Do "About this Mac..." from the Apple menu, then click "More Info..." in the resulting window. This opens System Profiler and, on its opening pane, is a complete description of your variant as "Hardware Overview." Copy/paste that info here, BEING SURE to omit your serial number. I'm on one of our older Macs now but the info should roughly parallel this format:
Hardware Overview:
Machine Name: Power Mac G4
Machine Model: PowerMac3,6
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (3.3)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.25 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
Memory: 1.75 GB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.4.8f2
Serial Number: /deleted/
The second line, which under Snow Leopard reads "Model Identifier" will uniquely call out your variant for us.
Those with the second line of Profiler stating "MacBookPro3,1" or "MacBookPro4,1" are subject to a Repair Extension Program for a defective video chipset.
If the identifier is 5,1 or greater, your computer is covered in the forums for newer MBPS here:

IMac keeps freezing - kernel panics and other
My iMac keeps freezing on me. Sometimes I get a notice that my computer experience a kernel panic and upon restart have the option of sending the info to Apple, other times it just feezes and I have to do a hard restart but get no prompts about the improper shutdown. This usually happens when I'm working in Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects at the same time.
Am I just overloading the system? And if so, why would it allow me to do that? Shouldn't it just run really slowly or have one application freeze, not the entire system? This hasn't been a problem in the past, it just recently started happening more and more often. Do I need more Ram? That's pretty much the only thing I can upgrade. Here are my system specs, please let me know if you have any suggestions for things I can do to prevent this from happening again. Thank you! Thanks for the replies. Baltwo I'll try running those test and see if they find anything.
Here's a recent Kernel panic log:

Hello good people
Out of nowhere my MacBook Pro has been acting funny. I have no clue to why this happened, but it happened after I rebooted the machine after Chrome started hanging while trying to purchase something. Chrome didn't crash or freeze, but no connections were working. I don't know for sure that my internet connection was working though. Anyway I figured I would close everything and try the ol' reboot trick, but when it booted a kernel panic happened. Since then a kernel panic happens every time I boot the machine. The panic logs are very similar though they don't match exactly.
Here are 4 of them on pastebin:
First: http://pastebin.com/UEVGr2RA
Second: http://pastebin.com/3EPPpJWQ
Third: http://pastebin.com/iVKZD87h
Fourth: http://pastebin.com/MEuUxWDt
I have tried resetting NVRAM and the SMC. Neither worked.
I can't boot in safe mode, but I can boot from an external hard drive connected via USB. Last week I installed an SSD drive and cloned my old harddrive, so I have a pretty similar setup on hand. It's the SSD drive that fails to boot.
The Disk Utility doesn't see anything wrong with either the permissions or the drive in general.
The disk mounts fine in Finder and I can seemingly browse all the data on there.
I removed the Little Snitch kext when I saw that on the first to panic logs right, but that didn't help either.
I tried the 'sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions' trick. Didn't help.
I am beginning to lean towards a reinstall but I really don't want to if I can avoid it, so I thought I'd throw it at the community. I hope someone out there can help. My own theory is that a file or something is corrupted and since I've got the same installation (albeit about a week old) I think I could replace the broken part if I can find out what it is.
Thanks in advance!Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -

What's the problem with this machine?
I've run the diagnostic software from apple. And it says that everything is allright.
No errors.Question????
where you running leopard???
if so that file should be there.
now for your problem and i hate to tell you this.
it might be a power supply issue the 1.8 ghz g5's where known for the capaciters going out on the power supply due to a cheap capaciter.
first sign this is happening
1. freezing/kernal panics
2. the nasty black box of death that says please restart your computer.
solution.

Shows Kernel Panic Mac error to my system
need help
Can you post some of your crash logs? Might be a clue. See Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2546
Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html Also look at Tutorial: An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports
http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060309075929717
Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: Testing RAM @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc (the AHT is on the Install/Restore DVD that came with your Mac)? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.

Cheers, Tom -
My MBP suffers from "kernel panic" attacks on an almost daily basis. This has occured ever since I downloaded Lion. The Apple support page suggests that this is a rare occurance, but it happens to me almost every day. Most often, if I let the computer go to sleep or close the lid, I'll find that it won't "wake up" without a complete re-boot. It always sends a report to Apple and for a couple of days I thought the issue was resolved, but now it's happening again with increasing regularity. I've reinstalled Lion once already... Any suggestions?
We can't help without the KP. In the meantime, see

MBP Retina Late 2013 - Kernel Panic Crash
Hi guys, I was just wondering if any of you might have an insight into the Kernel panic that my new MBP just suffered from. I just booted up my computer after it was turned off all night, and it immediately crashed after logging in.

IMac 2012 Kernel Panic w/ Error Report
I have a 2012 iMac.
At least 3-4 times a week, for months, my iMac restarts itself in the middle of the night. Strangely, I've only noticed it once I get up in the morning.
After much searching, I learnt that it's a kernel panic. I'm really confused on how to fix this. Please help. Here's the report:

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway. -
Question:
My 2009 macbook pro has 'kernel panic' - it is running Lion - I have visited the nearest Apple Store twice, & tried repeatedly to re-install Lion, then recover from Time Machine.
However, the problem persists - anyone have any ideas??
Regards
CH
EnglandCan you post the kernel panic report?

2011 i7 15" kernel-panic and 10.6.7-update ,performance so far-fixed.
i was getting kernel panics with iphone usb tethering in osx and when gaming my fans where whirring so fast my macbook could have almost started lifting offa my desk, however, ive since done the update and done smc reset a few times and reset p,ram too few times[jus to make sure etc]and its kicking along very nicely now,i run bcamp win 7 too and i have been playing far cry set to "high" for about 6 hrs today without a glitch,in fact, after doing the update and smc-p,ram etc,its not really even getting that hot,no joke, certainly not too hot to touch at all,and the fans are not buzzing even whilst gaming,so the usb thing is not fixed for me with iphone,[in osx, its fine in win 7]but i dont care, there is a big difference now, just thought id let the rest of you geezers know since its quite the distress to have your new i7 quaddie behaving more like a fan forced oven than a schmick laptop.for anyone in doubt about all this kerfuffle, unless you have a glitched hardware job,you will be fine, just do what i did, reset pram, smc and update, and u will be good as gold,ok.
ive been giving it a hiding for 2 days and no kpanic, not even loud fans, temps still going hi-ish,but thats within normal op temps[topping out in the hi 80-s whilst gaming etc],the next step for me will be to inspect the carelessly hideous amount of thermal paste that may be applied to the chips [not potato chips btw],and clean/reapply some fresh stuff if it looks bad like photos ive seen on other sites+ ifixit, this will help if heats an issue. mbpro 2.2 i7 15" 8 ram[samsung]7200 rpm hdrive,[hi res glossy].hope this helps anyone.ps =APPLE,PLEASE APPLY THE THERMAL PASTE PROPERLY NEXT TIME,===BAD APPLE===!!Ever notice how much easier it is to read something that uses capitalization and punctuation? When you're trying to communicate, make things easy for the folks on the other end.
You would be insane to void your warranty by replacing the thermal paste in your machine now that it's working perfectly.
