MBP 2011 Not starting up

Hi all,
Are there any known issues for Macbook Pros not starting up? I spilled liquid on it a few weeks ago, but all was fine until now it won't switch on at all even when plugged in to the mains.
I'm worried this will cost the world to repair & I can't afford it currently, but worried it will deteriorate the longer I leave it.
Any advice would be great, even if it's just a repair shop for a reasonable quote.
Thanks!

tessabella,
If you've an Apple Store nearby, they should be able to give you a free diagnosis and estimate for repair.
Unfortunately, the liquid sensors will likely be tripped and they will suggest that you replace the logic board, which can be quite expensive.
Good luck,
Clinton

  • My MBP will not start up after restart

My MBP (late 2011 running 10.8.something - receintly updated) will not start up after I had to do a restart to install Blackberry Desktop software (for my wife, I promise).  It chimes, gets past the grey screen with the Apple logo and then just sits on the login screen but with the background only, no account or anything.  My mouse pointer is there and moves but nothing else.  Anyone have any idea?

Reboot holding the Shift key down on a wired or built in keyboard, this is Safe Mode and will disable the at boot kernel extension file that Blackberry installed.
When you get in uninstall the software using their uninstaller. Then reboot normally again, visit their website for a update if there is one.
Blackberry/RIM software has been causing issues around here lately.
If your machine refuses to boot normally again, then run through this list 1-8,, by #8 your machine should be booting normally again.

  • Mini DisplayPort - VGA and MBP 2011 not working

    Hi,
I can't get my 13" mbp 2011 to connect to VGA screens. I've bought a mini DisplayPort to VGA converter (an Apple one, not a no name) and if I connect a display over VGA the screen stays black. My mbp recognizes the display, I can see the display's model, resolution etc but no signal. I've tried multiple screens, none work.
I don't have other converters so I can't test if HDMI screens for example do work.
    Anyone else having this problem?

I have a 2011 13" i7 and am having the same issue when connecting it to my LG TV through the HDMI adapter. However when I connect it to my HP external monitor it works but it's VERY blurry... so blurry that it hurts the eyes to look at it for more than a few mins.
My previous MBP (2010 13") works fine however with both the TV and monitor. I even reconnected it just to make sure and they both work flawlessly.
I only have 14 days total to return this new MBP and 5 of those days are used up so if I can't get this fixed by then I have no choice but to return it and go back to my old MBP.

  • MBP will not start, only has 99Mb free

Hello, I am trying to fix a friends Macbook Pro, which will not start. The logo appears with the spinning cog, but nothing else - it can stay on this screen for hours. I tried to reinstall Tiger, and then discovered that it only has 99Mb free, and Tiger needs more space.
I can access Terminal, but I am not familiar with UNIX to be able to do anything there. Is there a way of accessing the hard disk via my own iMac or wife's MBP through Firewire so we can delete something. I guess Target mode will not work, as there is not enough space to start the OS. Any help appreciated.
Our friends MBP is one of the original, 1.8Ghz Core Duo with 512Mb RAM.

The computer will probably still boot up in TD mode, Simon, even though it can't boot the Mac.
When used as the boot disk the computer needs plenty of free space to set up virtual memory areas and the like. That is one of the reasons why you should always make sure that there are always quite a few Gigabytes free for safe operation (Never let it get below 10% free space and try to maintain around 20% or more if, for example, you ever burn video, or other very large files).
TD mode essentially turns the computer into just another external HD, and the process occurs before it really needs to make use of the internal drive in the boot cycle.
So give it a go (just hold down "t" while starting the MBP). Your iMac should then see it as a second, external, HD.
Don't try and install any OS until you have cleared LOTS of space - 50 Gig or more in a situation like this where many of the files themselves will have become badly fragmented (because the normal OSX processes for defragging can't operate when a drive gets this full) . In fact I'd STRONGLY suggest that you back up or clone the entire drive to an external, or to another computer, wipe the internal, and only then start putting things back on. Otherwise you will have horrendous levels of free space fragmentation.
    Cheers

  • IMac 2011 not start with lion or up

iMac 2011 (12,1) only starting with 10.6.8 (but slowly start with blue screen). It not start with lion or yosemite. Re starting with Internet recovery. downloaded, but not start. Only grey screen with apple logo.

    Howdy umaxmac,
As I understand it you have successfully reinstalled both Lion and Yosemite but you cannot get past this gray screen when you try to boot the computer. I would recommend you use the troubleshooting from the following article about gray screen issues, named:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup

  • Mac book pro late 2011 not starting up

    Hi there,
I have a late 2011 Mac Book Pro 15 ".  It will no longer start up, looks dead, machine is fully charged and I simply put it to sleep.  Now I noticed that the magsafe charger is no longer displaying a light.
Any ideas here, its out of warranty, not looking forward to a huge repair bill.
    Thanks,
    AJ

Some power adapters can at times be wiley and show no light but stll be functioning, though that is rare.
I assume that you pressed the power button on side of the MBP where the battery charge level is displayed.
If the battery has a charge, it should start up unless there is another issue preventing it.  Likewise a MBP should work with the power adapter attached regardless of the battery status.
Try the SMC reset again.  If no success, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.  If it is a simple fix, it may be done gratis.  At any rate, you will know the exact situation and then make an informed decision.
    Ciao.

  • Mbp 15 not starting

This morning I put a lot of new software on my mbp 15''. After that I shut it down and a few hours later attempted to turn it on. It took a very long time to turn on about 3 min. Then I turned it back off and replaced my 512 mb of ram with two 1gb ram cards. Now it wont turn back on. Well it turns on because the little white light in the front is on but it wont actually start up. Any ideas?

thanks I put the original back in and one of the 1gb cards in and it worked. So what does this mean? Can I not use both? and how can I tell if my computer is using the new ram or recognizes it? thanks for you help

  • MBP 13" not starting, target disk mode not starting....

My gf's MBP 13" is not healthy, but before we can wipe it and start fresh, we need to get some files off it.
I've just tried the Target Disk Mode to my MBP 15"
Using firewire I hooked up to the powered 13",
    Connected to my ON 15"
Turned on the 13" and held down T
The firewire logo and power logo appea and dance around the screen on the 13"
on the 15" nothing appears - not on the desktop or in finder.
I'm able to check the firewire port on the 15" is working, but I can't check the 13" as it's just not working right as a computer right now.
I've also attempted hooking the 13" inch up to a portable HD and then daisy chaining that to the 15" -  HD showed up, but not the other computer.
    HELP...
    Thanks everyone
    -TfromT

it looks to be a version of mountain lion or snow leopard from the logo that pops up under recovery mode.
FURTTHER - I was able to confirm that the firewire port on the 13" DOES work - in recovery I hooked up a portable harddrive, but there is no way to copy off the files in recovery it would appear.
    ugh.

  • MBP does not start upafter superdrive update

    Hi,
I just upgraded the superdrive firmware (don't remember the release) and the macbook no longer boots up. The screen is completely dark and does not react although I removed the batery and power cord.
    Any idea?
    Thanks.

    Same problem with me!
I trashed the Superdrive Updater 2.1. application from the utilities folder (beforehand made a backup and created a disk image from a folder with the application). That solved the problem.
I am very fortunate that my drive still works. Now it makes only a very short engage and disengate sound at reboot and appears to be somewhat slower.
Apple should not post firmware upgrades that do not work or are very critical. Actually I did not want to install it, I just wanted to download the updater software, but after restart the **** thing just started all by itself.
Apple definitely should fix that problem and N E VE R program a autorun at startup routine for a firmware updater!!!

  • HELP! MBP is not starting up with a start up disk

My MBP was working fine one minute then all of a sudden, I heard constant beeping. After that it didn't shut down unless I pushed the power button. Upon restarting, I saw a question mark in the middle with a grey screen.
I tried reinstalling OSX leopard cd on it with the disk utility, but it won't even show a hard drive to repair.
I don't know what to do!

This is one of those great unknowns that will frustrate most users. Regrettably, "it is what it is." Hard drives fail... and in portables their odds of a head crash are increased due to the constant movement the machine is under (when in use and not in use). Outside of basic common sense (don't drop the machine, make sure it's off or sleeping when in transport, etc.) there's nothing you can really do to prevent a hard from failure. That's why you'll hear some people (both on these discussion boards and who work in IT support) stress the absolute importance of a backup. Heck, I have a backup for my backup and will even store absolutely critical documents in an online cloud solution as well.

  • Early 2008 MBP will not start up to Mac HD only to "OS X Utilities"

Running 10.8.5 with all updates as of 10/25.
Last night (10/25) I updated iTunes. The computer appeared to be working as normal. This morning the system will only boot up to OSX Utilities. I ran "Verify Disk" and verified disk permissions on all volumes indicated in the left column (Mac HD and Mac OS X Base System). The disks were verified and repaired.
I have four choices: Restore from Time Machine Backup (I don't have this back up), Reinstall OS X ( I don't have enough HD space), Get Help Online (have not found my similar problem yet) and Disk Utility ( tried as noted above - system appears to be ok).
I'm going to the Genius Bar tonight, but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions prior to me going. Thanks for any thoughts!
PS: just guessing, but I feel it may be the hard drive. I am assuming its not the logic board since I can still sort of start up.

Called AppleCare, it's the HD. New computer or a new HD.

  • MBP does not start up!!!

When my macbook went to sleep while closed i opened it up and got no display. I turned it off by pressing and holding the power button. When i turned it back on nothing happened. Blank screen no grey and start up noise. I could hear the hard disks or whatever start up like they always do when i have turned it on. But nothing else. I left it on and closed it and it became very warm. I have no idea what happaned but this is the second time some sort of display has failed on this macbook pro.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You might have the NVIDIA problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
That would be if you have the GeForce 8600M GT video chip. If this is the problem, you would qualify for a free repair.
    Good luck!

  • MBP Won't start, blinking ? Mark... Nothing works

I'm currently at work writing this on my 4 year old ibook g4, because after a complete system lock up yesterday, my MBP would not start up. It chimes, and then gives me the screen with a blinking question mark inside a folder.
I've read about this problem alot, and I've done almost every possible fix i could think of. I'm just finally getting my system back the way I had it after a crash a couple months ago in which i archived and installed, only to find the previous system folder intact, nothing switched over (users, settings etc), and my permissions all sorts of messed up.
So i'm really trying to avoid having to do another archive and install. Here's what I got so far:
The MBP's hard drive works, and mounts fine on the iBook using target disk mode. I ran disk utility (both from the iBook using TDM, and from the 10.5 install disk), both said the volume is fine and no repairs were necessary. I also reset pram, and tried starting up without extensions. no luck
i most recently downloaded DiskWarrior, and ran the rebuild on the system.
    This also had no effect.
Is there anything else I can do to make this work?
I have full access to the MBP hard drive via the ibook.
Starting from CD, the hard drive is not an option for startup in "startup disk", and is also not an option from startup disk on the ibook.

It's quite possible for a drive to pass all the diagnostic tests and yet not be bootable simply because one or more files are damaged but not in any way that the diagnostic software can find. You have no choice but reinstall the operating system. Whether you choose Archive & Install or erase and install is up to you.
Your description of the earlier A&I is not typical and it sounds like something went awry. Usually A&I is the best and safest method of reinstalling the OS.
