MBP 2011 Screen brightness changing regardless of the ambient light

As stated in the subject my brand new MBP 2011 screen brightness changes on its own, yes i know about the ambient light sensor, but my screen is going from med brightness all the way to minimum brightness even though the ambient light is constant. yes I know i can turn it off, but why build in an ambient light feature that just makes the screen go to mimimum brightness when in a well lit room??
or do i have a faulty one??

I too have this problem on my spanking new MacBook Pro.  Called AppleCare and they said they weren't aware of this issue.
Meanwhile, this is my 1st mac.  Had it for a few weeks now.  Decided to open iTunes for the 1st time.  The whole MacBook Freezes, no mouse interactivity, reboot required.  This happens EVERY time I start iTunes which I no longer do.  Apparently it's a known issue which Apple has patched(unsuccessfully).  But hey c'mon, I mean iTunes?  This is one of the core apps which SHOULD be tested extensively against the hardware. When you consider Apple PROVIDES the hardware, this is simply unacceptable.  Unbelievable even.  I simply can't believe how poor this is from a major company.  But hey my MacBook Pro LOOKS GOOD right, so who cares if it's a technically malfunctioning piece of junk.
Here's my theory.  Is part of Apple's patch deliberately reducing screen brightness without user authorisation when the MacBook starts to overheat, all because they know they've been incompetent/negligent with their QA testing and the hardware can't handle the software?  If so, why have users not been informed?
I'm from Australia and we have this so-so comedian called Chris Lily who fans have taken to calling a genius, the joke amongst non-fans being the word genius has been dumbed down over the years to be almost meaningless.   Anyway, maybe a certified Apple 'genius' can explain the reasoning for the apparently deliberate brightness reductions?

  • MBP 2011, Screen Brightness in Energy Saver mode issue?

    hi,
got a new 2011 MBP 17', setup dim in energy saver mode & plugged in an external DVI monitor via Thunderbolt port.  energy mode dims & blanks LCD but the external screen does not.  It does however then turn off and lock when display sleep is reached.
anyone any ideas if this is just a "feature of the new port" that we need to ask apple about or have i missed something?
FYI,  energy saver pref screen pops up only on 1 screen.  displays pref pops up on both but currently only the MBP LCD screen has a brightness and auto adj settings.  external screen just has resolutions & refresh rate options.
    thanks,
    Simon.

Nope - on my wife's MB (i.e. 13" MacBook, unibody/late 2008), there's no 'custom setting' or 'Details' when clicking on the menu bar battery icon. There is a shortcut to the Energy Saver preference pane, but no option to control brightness in that preference pane other than the checkbox I mentioned above. You can set timers for display sleep, etc., of course.
So, what I see on my MBP, what I see on my wife's MB, and what you're seeing on your MBP seem to be the same. If you have access to a MacBook, check again - if you find the setting your thinking of, post a screenshot...

  • Screen brightness changes between standbys

I just received my new Macbol Pro C2D after realizing that the Macbook, just didn't have enough graphic power. And the quality of the screen was suspect, considering all f the ghosting.
But I noticed that when I start up my macbook from a sleep, the brightness often changes. The only thing i can hope it is is that the laptop is trying to be helpful by adjusting it's brightness to suit the the current envionment; because it has to have a light sensor because of the keyboard black light. But I would rather it didn't do it. Or is my laptop just broken?

This is usual behaviour and is drriven by the ambient light sensor. You can turn this behaviour off in the Displays System Preference.

Where are you trying to copy files to, What folder.
If you create a folder anywhere on the drive then You should have ownership of that folder. If you are trying to copy files to a System Folder then of course the system has ownership and will restrict access.
I Personally, in Lion, added my user account to the ROOT access of the Drive and given myself Read/Write access with no i'll harm, AFAIK.
Haven't done that in Mt Lion yet.

  • Can the ambient light sensor be used to control the monitor brightness?

I have a 3-week old iMac G5-17 1.9 gig machine. It seems wrong that the ambient light sensor is only used to control the level of the power light. Cheap TV sets have had this feature for decades!
Does anyone know if there is a way to apply the light sensor to the monitor?

Hello! Contrast in universal access set to normal, precalibration ColorMath RGB reduce but not solve the brightness dazzling, calibrate profile in expert mode don't work (a friend cameraman with "good eyes" try calibrate a profile with mix result).
I cheat calibration to reduce the brightness problem...
Snow arround my house in Canada have the same "full white brightness" like my imacg5 20' and i put my eskimo goggle for snow to look at my imacg5 20' screen!!
    Cheers!

I have connected a new 27"ACD to a 27" iMac (2010) and cannot independently adjust brightness on the external display. Also, the option for turning off the ambient light sensor is not available. The iMac has the latest updates according to Apple messages. Any help will be appreciated.

No, Detect Displays had no effect. However, I made the USB connection from the ACD to the iMac after the system was on. Following a re-start, all controls are available. Thank you for your response.

  • I just bought a new iPhone 5 today and the Ambient light sensor is not working. What can i do?

I just bought a new iPhone 5 today and the Ambient light sensor is not working. What can i do?

Ambient light sensors are not always perfect in their function. To test, go into darkened room, with screen OFF, Locked, tap Home button. Look at screen it should be normal for use in darkened room, turn on bright lights, the screen should brighten to help compensate. If your iPhone does not do this, then Restore iPhone with current iTunes on your computer. See if better. If still problem, make Genius reservation or set up Service and take or send to Apple for resolution under Warranty.

  • MBP forgets screen brightness settings?

Since I have installed Leopard my MBP "forgets" where I had the screen brightness set once it's restarted. It defaults to just below half, even if I have it on full when I shut it down. Am I missing a setting?

The screen changes brightness so that when you are in a dark room it doesn't blind you. this works in conjunction with the keyboard lighting up so you can see it.
What you can do is that you can manually set the brigthness when you are in a darker room to brighter or dimmer, and the machine will remember that setting under those conditions, as I have found out. Not sure if it will let you have full brightness in a dark room unless you uncheck the setting that controls this in displays preferences as someone else pointed out.
Same applies to keyboard brightness settings. If you don't want the keyboard fully lit up, you can dim it manually in the dark, and it will remember that setting next time.
Once you get used to it and can control it, it is the way to go, IMO.

  • Screen brightness changes unexpectedly?

When adding my contacts I noticed the screen brightened itself while I was performing text entry. While using Safari and entering some data into a text box this morning the screen brightened itself again to the same level as yesterday's auto-brightening. Has anyone else seen this?

I have the same issue with my 16Gig (white) 3G.
With auto-brightness set to on, the iPhone's display will bloom even in a completely dark room. If the sensor in fact worked properly, I would think the display should stay "low".
My old 1st gen iPhone would keep the brightness down in a dark room, and only increase if it sensed ambient light. The iPhone 3G will bloom at the most oddest times, and not increase at times when there is considerable ambient light. When it refuses to increase, I have to manually increase the brightness, even though auto-brightness is set to on. Other times I think there's no rhyme or reason to it.
I'm hoping this can be addressed in a software update, rather than having a defective ambient light sensor. I don't know why they changed it from the 1st gen, as that one appeared reliable and worked as intended.

  • Screen brightness changes on its own

My laptop screen brightened all of a sudden on its own, 1/3 - 1/2 EV. I was editing a photo in PSCS3 when this occurred, the photo was from Lightroom. The brightness change effected everything, not just PS. For the past several days I've been editing photos in LR & thought I had the tone adjusted pretty good on all the photos. Today when I looked at the photos again, I felt like I needed to brighten then up some. After making exposure/brightness/tonecurve adj. to the photos today, I needed to do editing in PS, and as I was editing, the screen made a brightness change. I recalibrated the monitor & the brightness stayed the same. How could the previous monitor profile be turned off & all of a sudden turn itself back on. Windows Vista on Sony Vaio laptop (yeah I know I need something besides a laptop screen to edit photos). This probably has nothing to do with PS but I thought I would try on this forum as it's usually very helpful. Perhaps you can suggest another forum that might help. Thanks!

Sometimes a power management scheme will kick in on a laptop and change the monitor brightness. When editing you should always work with external power connected and all settings set at Never for that state.
And, if you're serious, get a good monitor!
