MBP 2011 vs MBP 2011 & iPad

I have a MBP (13inch) that is a year old this month (2.26GHz, 4BG Ram, 500GB HD) and looking at the new version of the MBP. I also have a new MBAir (13inch), but now I'm looking at consolidating between the 2 MacBooks for the news MBP.
I travel internationally for work and on the go constantly which is why I went for the MBAir to lighten the weight.
Now with the newest MBP and the new iPad I'm questioning whether to move into an entirely new direction.
Do I sell the current MacBooks and get a new MBP maybe with an SSD and or supplement with an iPad?
Even without all the other considerations between the different MacBooks and iPad. I can't seem to find anywhere what the weight of a new MBP would be with an SSD instead of HD. Would the weight difference be that much between the 2 different drives? Since this is the first time the MBP has been offered with the SSD I'm not sure of the differences deep inside.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
I know we all have to change with the times, but now Apple is coming out with so many different products at the same time you never know which direction to move. That doesn't even consider what they might do with the iPhone5 ...

I have faced the same dilemma.
I travel a lot. For certain trips, I just use my MacBook Air. For me, I just did not want my "main" computer to face all the risks associated with travel.
As for the iPad, I love mine, but, for travel, it just does not cut it. I need to be able to access, store, and edit documents on my iPad. For me, the MacBook Air has been the best solution.
My advice would be to have a MacBook Pro, with a traditional hard drive, and a MacBook Air for travel.
Having a SSD in my MacBook Pro is very tempting, but the cost and unproven long-term reliability of SSD just push me away.
Once Mac OS X Lion is released, I know that I will revisit my views on SSD, but, for now, traditional hard drives are still the best.
I hope that this helps!
Good luck, and let us know.

  • Best Mini Display to DVI adapter for 2011 17" MBP w/no blocked ports!

I am looking to get a Mini Display to DVI adapter for my 2011 17" MBP.
+(Preferably it would even be one with a 6' cord.)+
It is not clear which one I should buy. Apple's (adapter only, no cord), is $30, while I can see others for far less on Amazon.
I have read that some of these adapters actually block the FW800 and USB ports on either side.
A blocked, or displaced FW800 port is a deal breaker.
    1. Can someone with a 2011 17" MBP tell me that they have either one of these adapters, or the one with the cord, and that it doesn't block their FW800 port? (I'll pay the $30 (albeit grudgingly) if its the only one that works.)
    2. This may be a dumb question, but the specs on these adapters say that they are capable of 1080p resolution. Would that mean they would work with a 1920x1200 monitor?

You might want to try the "MBP Display" discussion threads, might be able to find what you are looking for in there or get better support there.
I don't think I can help very much, but I have the Apple's adapter (no cord) and it doesn't block my usage of FW.

iPhoto disappeared from my late 2011 17'' MBP OS 10.7.4, app store says: These apps cannot be accepted on this computer.
    What should I do?

Hey there! So, I already contacted Mac App Store support several times, the response:
    - "Apple is currently working toward a resolution for the issue you have reported. You will receive an email after the matter has been investigated and further information is available.
Thank you for your patience. Apple wants your iTunes experience to be as enjoyable as possible"
I answered I really needed it, and if they knew the estimated time it would take to solve the issue. Here's the last response.
    - "According to your previous correspondence, you have not been able to install iLife after reinstalling OS X Lion. I understand that this issue is under investigation, and that you would like to know the amount of time needed to find a resolution. As a fellow iTunes customer, I certainly understand that you need to use iPhoto for professional reasons, and I'll gladly help you to resolve this problem.
Unfortunately, I am unable to give you the exact amount of time this issue could take. I do assure you that our engineers are currently working towards a resolution. "
I'm going to an Apple Sotre Genius today, in 2 hours. I'll keep updated!!

  • Late 2011 17" MBP - Will not boot, eject, or read disk

    Hi guys,
My late 2011 17" MBP after having a server error on Mac Recovery, freezing, and being force shut off, now will not boot.
When you power it up, it chimes then goes to a blue screen, indefinitely.
It also will not eject the DVD in it's drive.
I've tried every key combination prior to startup or during startup to try and remedy this, and nothing.
It always boots with a chime then blue screen.
    Please help. :3

    Ejecting the disk:
    Try these various remedies: http://guides.macrumors.com/Force_Eject_a_Stuck_CD_or_DVD
Since your Mac came with Lion installed it may have a recovery partition on the boot disk.
There are two ways boot from the Recovery Partition:
    - Hold down the Command-R as you boot.
This will attempt to boot from the Recovery Partition
and if that fails it will try to boot using Network Recovery (a slow process).
    - If it won’t boot using Command-R then hold down the Option key as you boot.
              Select the Recovery Partition.
Backup:  Do you have a recent backup?  If not I suggest you create one before proceeding.  You might not need it but it is especially important to have a backup whenever your Mac is sick.  Post back for instructions for an emergency backup, if needed.
    Blue Screen:
From the Recovery Partition you should be able to repair the disk and reïnstall OS X (without erasing you existing data).

  • HT2213 Does this EFI restore from CD works on 2011 early MBP 13" ?

My 2011 early MBP 13 has some proble, if I did not connect the Hard drive, and power on, the fan always run full speed, also if I connect the Hard drive, the system usage always show high number around 80%, I reinstall the OS few time, and did not solve the problem, wil restore EFI fix it?

I understand you replaced the superdrive with your SSD so far right ?
This mac (used to have one) doesn't handle having an SSD in the superdrive bay well.
You need to put your HD into that bay, and the SSD into your HD bay.
I would suggest to put the SSD directly on the HD bay, start in recovery (I think it will go online to fetch the OS install) and install the system directly on the SSD.
I think on some macs, the superdrive connection cant handle Sata3 devices properly, hence the errors you probably get. (that's the case with Early 2011 MacBook Pros i.e.)
Else, if you cant get to recovery, create a USB install drive with a software called Diskmaker (used to be called Lion Diskmaker). Boot on the USB drive, and install from there.

  • Is it possible to downgrade an Early 2011 15" MBP to Snow Leopard?

Is it possible to downgrade an Early 2011 15" MBP (MacBookPro8,2) to Snow Leopard?
The laptop shipped with Lion, and I don't recall whether this model ever even shipped with Snow Leopard.  I figure if it did ship with snow leopard then there is at least a chance that I'd be able to downgrade.  Though, of course, I don't have the disk.
I will check with the apple store guys at some point, but I thought I'd ask here.
    Austin

If you had bought the same model MBP a few weeks earlier you could have received two software licenses - Snow Leopard as shipped, and also a free upgrade to Lion. That being the case, why not call AppleCare  and see if they will "retroactively" give you the same capability by sending you the grey-labeled machine-specific Snow Leopard install disc that originally shipped with your model MBP before it started shipping with Lion.
In this thread the OP requested a Snow Leopard disc for a new iMac that shipped with Lion, and reported the following:
Called Apple and they first said I coul not install SL, a day latter and I received a call from the manager saying that I had gotten the wrong information, so yes, I can install SL. They sending me the grey disk free of charge.
Apple usually charges a nominal fee for replacing a "lost" grey-labeled Install disc. Of course in your situation you are not actually "entitled"  to any disc at all, and the particular person at Apple that you speak with may not be as accommodating. But it can't hurt to ask.

  • IChat issues on 2011 17" MBP

    I recently got a 2011 17" MBP (10.6.7). I've been using a 2008 15" MBP (10.6.7).
I communicate daily with colleagues using video iChat.
The 2008 MPB has run iChat without any issues for months.
When I try the 17", I get bandwidth issues (my signal breaks up at the other end, video freezes, aberrant audio) The connection doctor shows my rate of tranmission dropping dramatically.
I tried shutting off all other programs and it worked okay. Starting up Safari caused it to choke. I tried switching from wireless to ethernet and it had no affect.
I tried reducing the bandwidth to 500 kbps and it didn't fix the problem.
I can start up the 15" MPB on Wifi, connect flawlessly to the same people, even while running Safari.
Clearly the issue is somewhere in the 17"MBP. Any recommendations?
Don't know if this is related but it does feel like the 17" does not load web pages in Safari as fast as the 15" but I haven't documented it precisely.
    Thanks,
    Dan

    Hi,
It does sound a bit odd.
Most likely there is a process running that is using the Processor(s) quite heavily.
Open the Activity Monitor (In Applications/Utilities).
In the window there is a drop down in the top bar.
Select All Processes in this drop down.
The List is normally is reverse order with the things that loaded or started later near the top. (The PID numbers)
You should find that most things you are running are above the Finder's icon.
iChat should be listed if Open.
iChatAgent (A support app that has no icon) should also be listed
iChat should show a fairly small number in the CPU column and iChatAgent should be at zero.
Depending on the Processor iChat should rise to about 20% during a Video Chat
I would look down the CPU column first to see what is showing as being in use.
A Web Browser should be at rest, certainly below 5% once a page has loaded.
    A Pic of mine
I use Skitch to grab pics and edit the comments on them so it shows relatively high on my G4/1Ghz Dual Processor.  (Green Stuff)
iChat was open but no chats were happening  (Some of the red)
The Activity Monitor was what I had open as well so it shows CPU usege (Blue)
The thing to look for is unexpected items listed as running.
Compare these to the things in System Preferences > Accounts > (your account) Login Items.

  • My 2011 early MBP pro 15 freezes at startup with distorted image

My 2011 early MBP pro 15 freezes at startup with distorted image, and sometimes its blank screen, I have also noticed that the machine heats up quickly at the same time.
I got this problem few weeks ago when it is running windows 7 in vitual machine. Firstly I used a software to disable the discrete graphic card and it backed to work for 2 weeks until the OS got an update (might be a firmware update since it required restart). Now it stops working completely.
I have try two hard drive (I have put in a SSD few months ago) and run the command line disk check on both of them, nothing wrong.
I tried to run disk utility/time machine at start-up, distorted screen or just blank
I tried to reinstall rams, did not work.
    Any other possible solutions?

  • Using Dual External Monitors as Separate Screens with Late-2011 15" MBP

    Hello,
I've looked around for answers, but haven't found something that seems to address what I'm looking for.
I have a late-2011 15" MBP. The Apple TB FAQ page says it can support two external monitors. I currently have it hooked up to one external monitor via mini-to-HDMI.
I'd like to add a second external monitor, but am not sure the best way to do that. It looks like the Apple TB monitors can do it natively, by daisy-chaining, but I can't afford to purchase two of those monitors. I'd prefer to use a third-party monitor like a ViewSonic 27" or some such, which are significantly more affordable.
I want to have two actual separate monitors, the way the setup they do with the Apple TB monitors appears – not two monitors that are splitting a single screen between them (as is the case with a few of the splitter-solutions I've seen linked).
Is there a way to achieve this?
    Thanks!

I should clarify that I would prefer to do it without using a USB port to do a USB-to-HDMI conversion. I have used USB for a monitor before, and I find the lag virtually unworkable. A daisy-chaining solution, or a native splitter would be ideal.

  • Late 2011 15" MBP periodic burst of white noise

Has anyone found a solution for this problem?  Every 30 seconds or so, I hear a burst of white noise.  I'm running a late 2011 15" MBP.  My co-worker has the same problem running a 2011 13" MBP.  It doesn't seem to be due to any 3rd party software as we're both running different problems.  It also happens with nothing running.
    Thanks.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Can I use hard drive cable from 15" MBP in 13" MBP?

I'll start of with the tl;dr:
My mid 2012 13" MBP is acting up and I believe it's the hard drive cable that is broken. Thing is, I've got an early 2011 15" MBP with broken GPU. Can I salvage that cable and use in my 13" or will something go to ****?
Problem in general is my 13" MBP doesn't work properly with the connected hard drive. I can boot from an external drive without any issues and I can even see the internal one (luckily I could rescue all my files this way, albeit it transfering them was slow as ****) but I can't boot from the internal one, the computer just stucks on the apple logo forever.
I've also tried reinstalling the OS and managed to start the installer but after installing for roughly 5 hours it got stuck at "less than one minute remaning" over the night so I killed it. Then I tried putting the hard drive in a USB-case and it worked fine. And then I tried another working hard drive as the internal drive and experienced the exact same problem.
Edit: spelling From googling I've concluded that the mid 2012 13" MBP has had issues with broken hard drive cables, so I figured I'd try that. But it would be nice if I didn't have to buy a new one and wait for it to ship
    Any help is welcome!

" I've got an early 2011 15" MBP with broken GPU."
You know there's a recall on that model:
    Apple Recall:
    https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/
Yah don't think swapping the cables will work. Since there's a recall on your 15"  I wouldn't go messing around inside least you get rejected for recall for modding.

    Hi All Experts,
I have encountered with this error while doing MIGO.
Posting only possible in periods 2011/11 and 2011/10 in company code 4000
    Message no. M7053
    Diagnosis
The posting date entered is not within one of the permitted posting periods (current period/previous period).
This can be due to one of two reasons:
The correct current period has not been set in the system.
For the system, the first of the entered periods is the current period. At the beginning of a new period, your systems administrator must change the current period in the material master record, using the function "Shift periods". This has not yet been done.
You have entered a wrong date in the field "Posting date".
    Procedure
Check the posting date and correct it if necessary. If your input is correct, inform your systems administrator that the "period shifting" (period-end closing) process has not yet been completed.
I have checked OB52, OB29, OB37, MMPV, MMRV. All possible T.codes and threads I tried from SDN itself, still no luck ! In OB52 I have opened 2011 & 2012 year open absolute.
Would like to share MMRV settings :-

    Previous Period : 10 / 2011

    Hi All Experts,
I raised the OSS, and here which I got the reply from SAP.
There is a possibility to run the report RMMMINIT to initialize posting
periods. Please bear in mind that the valuation data of the previous
    period could get affected.
If you decide to proceed with the process, please review the
    documentation of program RMMMINIT.
Please also review attached note 70545 regarding the initialization
process. Although this note is NOT valid for your release, it provides
good information on the use of initialization for correction purposes.
Additionally, please review attached note 369637 in this regard as well.
PLEASE FIRST PERFORM THIS IN A TEST/DEVELOPMENT SYSTEM PRIOR TO MOVING
TO PRODUCTION AS YOUR VALUATION DATA FROM PREVIOUS PERIOD WILL BE
AFFECTED. If you are satisfied with the results, then you can move it
to production. Please perform this at your own risk as this hotline
will not support any problems arising out of it.
Related the error message MM016 please follow the steps from note
    487381:
To reserve the parameter use transaction SU01 for the user's name who
executes the RMMMINIT program. The parameter must be set as follows:
    Parameter Value
MMPI_READ_NOTE YYYYMMDD (for the current date)
I am not able make out any meaning out of it. Can anyone please understand me this ?
    Help will be appreciated !
    Reagrds,
    Sharvari Joshi.
P.S : Steps from my side which I performed , I changed the parameters for my ID in SU01 to current date 2011.11.16 (YYYYMMDD) and running MMPI still same error.

Kindly note that you don't need to do data load for this object.
It will automatically derive by system.
Just change the Info object 0CALMONTH in RSD1, Go to Master Data/text column and check mark on with text.
