MBP 2011 with no OS DVD gray screens and it won't boot.
This laptop was booting up but started crashing and I think it's a HDD issue.
I replaced the drive with a known good empty drive but get an error when I try to do
an internet recovery (command+option+R). The error is 4403F.
I have fiber which goes through a PPPoE authentication process in the router. This MBP came with Snow Leopard
I believe. Unfortunately, this is the only Mac I have and the Apple store is about 180 miles away.
How can I get an OS X DVD without having to pay as the OS is free now anyway? I do have a time machine backup on my network.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mark
Early 2011 MBPs came with Snow Leopard installation disks, late 2011 MBPs came with Lion.
Since OPTION+COMMAND+R does not work on your MBP, it indicates to me that your MBP did not come with Lion installed. If it did, your MBP would then be connected to the Apple servers and the original OSX would be installed.
Duplicate installation disks can be obtained from Apple Customer Service. They will need the serial number of your MBP and there is a charge. Use the phone number at the bottom of this page. If you are told that your MBP did indeed come with Lion, then you have a different problem.
Ciao.

I have a gray screen and why won't it load my OS?
Ok this is the deal I have been at this for three days. I ran a disk verification and told me that my hard drive disk needed reparied. I tried to repair it said to get as much stuff off that I can disk can't be repaired (it gave me a gray screen, with apple logo, and a bar at the bottom). Since Maverick just came out I thought I would get that OS from another mac I have and make a bootalbe flash drive. I have read how to do this did it manually and did it with third party software. When I start the mac and hit option key the only thing it showed was my mac HD and lion recovery. So I thought well I would just recover with lion then try bootalbe flash drive again. So I erased my Mac HD and then went into reinstall lion. It got all the way to the last ten min and flashed an error (did not give me an error code, just told me to start over. So I need to know what I am doing wrong or why the usb drive is not showing up with the maverick install. If you could help me out I would appreciate it very much (I have never had so much problem with a mac and I have had one since the 80's. Here are the sites I have already gone to and tried.

Once I register my MBP and create a user account, I get a gray screen and it does nothing.
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

Startup your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys.
From there you should be able to access the built in utilities to repair the disk and restore OS X using OS X Recovery -
New MBP 13 inch w/ Retina dude- gray screen on boot up
I bought a new laptop and 2 weeks in I booted up to a frozen gray screen. It would happen anytime after a shutdown or restart. Weirdly, I could get to the desktop after being frozen on the gray screen and boot up after holding option, command and power. But I would have to do this everytime I got to the gray screen. Spoke with apple people on the phone. They had me reset my smc and pram. These strategies did not work. I did alittle bit of research quickly while on the phone and found safe booting it could fix this problem. Tried it and it worked.
I'm just wondering if I should be concerned of a hardware problem? Maybe theres other maverick users who have experienced the same issue. I just want to make sure. It's been fine since though. These are symptoms of a GPU problem. Your best option is an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a FREE definitive evaluation.

Why is my Snow Leopard 10.6.8 suddenly giving me a gray screen and progress bar after I've turned it on? The progress bar takes 4-5 minutes to complete then signing on with my password and all other operations are normal. Solution? Many thanks.

First of all, do a PRAM reset. If it doesn't help, open Terminal and type:

Help appreciated.Well, this is back with vengeance.
I've tried removing the Telestream software and the BlackBerry software and I still get a blank screen randomly. The last one happened last night when I tried to download AppCleaner to make sure all files from the above programs had been removed. As soon as I clicked 'download' it went blank and froze.
This is persistent, and the annoying thing is that I can't get it to restart when I want. I tried pulling out the power cord for a while, several PRAM resets, Safe Mode, try to get into recovery disk to check the drive, etc, etc.
Sometimes a few PRAM resets seem to work, other times it will go into the recovery disk, but most of the time it just seems to randomly boot up again after not working for ages. I can't find a pattern and I've tried this many times.
At the moment I can't get it working. I've just removed some Crucial RAM that was installed to see if that helped, but to no avail.

Why is my internet search page gray? I am able to search a topic, but the 'results' part of the screen is a medium gray color and it won't respond. Any ideas?
Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cache (and Clear History)
If that doesn't work then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
