MBP 2012 - frozen screen with lines & beeps

Hello all,
A couple of days ago, my 2012 MBP froze and I simply restarted it with no problem. I double-checked with Onyx that said my volume needed repairs; I ran Command + Recovery's DIsk Utility but when I booted back up, Onyx still said that my volume needed repairs. Since the computer was running fine, I thought that perhaps Onyx was being outdated for Mavericks. However, the other night a mass of little greenish lines appeared in little fields over the screen as it stood frozen. Normally if this ever happens, I simply restart it, but this time the screen turned to black and my MBP started emitting what sounded like beep sounds of death. I think about 3 or so were emitted, but I was so panicked that I just pressed the power button, to which the system booted up again. It seems as though there's no problem once again, but I ran Onyx and it says again that my volume needs to be repaired. Before I went to bed last night, I did a PRAM reset and I'm using it now for the first time since then and there doesn't SEEM to be a problem, but a sense of worrying isn't gonna go anytime soon about it (understandably so). My Apple limited warranty is going to expire soon, so I figure that I should take advantage of it to use it for any problem it might, because right now I'm in the midst of finals and papers and I need my MBP to work. Any suggestions or insight as to what's happening? I have to make an appointment with a local Authorized Mac repair shop in my town and I won't be able to go in to see them until Wednesday, so any advice or anything you might have would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks in advance for all of your help and responses!

FIRST thing to do is to backup your data to an external hard drive. You may lose everything otherwise.
After that is done, run the Apple Hardware Test. Follow this page carefully and if you do not understand anything ask here again.

Also, make an appointment with a Genius at an Apple store before your warranty expires!

  • Why is my Macbook Pro suddenly and constantly shutting down/crashing on me and giving me a blacked out or blued out screen with lines?  Seems like a total system failure is happening?

Macbook Pro- shortly after upgrading to free software upgrade to Mavericks- 10.9.5-
has suddenly been freezing up, but went more directly to 'shutting down,'  CRASHING on its own.  Most of the time, if I'm even able to successfully get the laptop turned back on, it only stays up/on for a few moments before repeating the failure.   The failure is often accompanied with the monitor going 'blank,' or most typically either 'blacking out,' or going blue/green or grey screen with lines or grids all over the monitor.  All Desktop visibility, functions or applications in process disappears.  This has caused repetetive 'forced shut downs,' which I never usually do, unless prompted to because I have no choice like this.... Or as I said, the computer itself will just shut down and turn off by itself.... Can anyone tell me what this issue is, and I'm pretty sure other Mac users have seen this exact thing I'm describing happening on their laptops, with their systems or on their monitors.  Someone please explain or point me in the right direction... as naturally my laptop just went out of warranty as well.... And I don't know if this means the entire system is basically corrupted, dying/dead... and or if it is a monitor issue, a hardware issue, software issue or if there is anything that can be done to restore, repair it, etc.?   Also another thing I have noticed ever since getting this laptop- (few years old now...) is that it runs VERY HOT... has in fact burned my lap /skin many times... and seems like the fan or internal operating systems/functions are also perhaps not functioning properly.  Can this also be causing the problem?  Or is it a corruption or virus of some kind? etc.   Thank you.

What you describe sounds like a hardware issue. Unfortunately, you'll need to get that checked out by Apple. If you have an Apple Store near you, make an appointment with the Genius Bar and take the machine in for evaluation.

HHola I update my Apple TV and I am frozen screen with the photo of Apple TV and iTunes symbol and a cable connected from one to another device, it happens and how to fix it Apple TV

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)

Have you tried connecting the device to iTunes in recovery mode and restoring it? See this article for instructions on getting your iPod into recovery mode.

Are the lines like psychedelic herringbone?  If yes, I had that happen once, it was something serious, like the
Logic board. The good news is that it was fixed without any loss of data on the hard drive. Take it in to have Apple look at it ASAP.  I took it to TekServe at the time, they are very nice about preserving your data and user library when possible.
    Good luck and don't panic.

  • Gray screen with lines after waking from sleep or opening lid after closed

I have a 2.4 gHz Aluminum Macbook (Late 2008) with backlit keyboard running Lion. Every time I wake it up after the screen goes black or when I open the lid after I've been gone for a while, a gray screen with thin vertical colored lines appears (the lines are in different positions every time). I can hear sound when I press the volume buttons and I can eject CDs. Usually it fixes when I close it and re-open it. When I'm working with multiple monitors, it is nearly impossible to get out of- I have to unplug the Mini Display Adapter and THEN re-open it.
All I have seen on the internet is to update your OS but mine is completely updated. Maybe the screen is going out? I've reset the PRAM and SMC with no luck.
Any help would be appreciated, Kolton

My March 2011 MBP did the same thing.
After spending about an hour online with Apple Care without success, I did a reinstall of the Lion OS. It fixed the problem.  I was concerned that I would lose data or settings, but the reinstall was seemless and everything was the way it was before the reinstall except that the "black screen on wake" problem was fixed.
I started the reinstall before I went to bed and it was waiting for me the next morning.
Here is a link to the page on how to do the reinstall:

    Hope this helps.

  • Frozen screen with no connection with mouse or keyboard

    Hello,
My iMac has frozen on the start up page. I googled what might be wrong and came up with a bluetooth connection problem. So, I bought a wired mouse and it still won't 'wake up'. The wired mouse doesn't work either. Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any techy help!

Reboot and immediately hold down the Alt/Option key during the sound that Linc mentioned, until a grey screen with a choice of boot disks appears. Choose your Mac OS X boot disk.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
    or maybe:
    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • White screen with line down the middle?

My Ipod hit the floor and now all I can see is a white screen with a line down the middle. Do I need to send it in for repair or is there something else I can do to get the screen to work? The music still plays however.

Sounds like a hardware problem. I am not sure if you want to send it to Apple since they are likely to want to charge you almost the replacement cost of the iPod, that is if they will look at it at all.
You might try some of the online iPod repair places. Many are pretty affordable.
