MBP 5,1 - OSX 10.6.8 - Beachballs

Hello all,
I've been searching this site and many other forums for weeks now, ending up more confused than I had planned on.
About a month ago (Mid December, 2012) I noticed my Late 2008 MBP started hanging and showing beachballs.  Here is what I have done so far...
Reset the PRAM
Reset the SMC
Logged in via Safe Mode - Seems to make things better for awhile, then begins hanging again.
Created alternate Admin account - Also seems to work ok
Watched System Monitor - hangs don't allow this to be updated fast enough to see what is causing it.
Checked Console Logs - Showing a ton of disk0s1 I/O Errors
The last bit leads me to believe I have too many bad sectors on my 4yr old HDD, so I did a Time Machine backup to an external and started researching replacements.  Here is where my questions start...
Will my Time Machine backup be viable with all these I/O errors, or would I be better off with a fresh install?
In looking at replacement drives, I have narrowed it down to the
Seagate Momentus or WD Scorpio Black - both in 750GB configurations, leaning towards the Seagate - this is where I tend to get confused.  Both of those drive show *some* MBP users having serious issues with beachballs after installing, which seems to be tied to the hardware in your machine being compatible or the version of Firmware 1.6 vs 1.7  Folks have gotten past it by either installing a SATA cable out of a different machine and/or downgrading firmware to 1.6
Is there a way to tell if my SATA cable is the correct one for this swap? Also, is the Seagate a good choice for my machine? I am not a power user, but would like to extend the use of this laptop for another 4 years, so wanted to go with as fast a drive as I could and Hybrid seems the way to go.
Any other help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  I love my Apple devices, but this one is giving me gas...

Basic airplay will only beam content to your TV. Mirroring will display your entire screen. Basic airplay is supported on your machine.
Not ordinarily via Flash though unless Adobe has updated Flash to allow this or the latest 10.6.8 Safari update added something.
Not running a machine with 10.6.8 currently so can't test.
'Basic Airplay' is different to mirroring in that iTunes can send a pre-rendered (eg purchased) video stream to AppleTV as a target destination and pre-dated mirroring by some time but only from itunes on a Mac did it used to be available.

  • Lots of spinning beach balls. MBP 3,1 OSX 10.8.2

    Dear all
I own a 2007 MBP 3,1 2,4 ghz core 2 duo with 6gb of RAM (recently the video card was replaced because of the dreaded nvidia problem known to these devices.. - mind you, only the video card was replaced, not the logic board (was out of warranty by 11 days..)
I used it on OX snow leopard without a problem and OSX Lion too.
But after installing an SSD 180gb from intel and clean installing 10.8.2 i keep having the dreaded beach ball issue. Everytime i open a finder window it stalls and hangs. i have problems switching programms.. (the SSD itself is fast, startup times are near 0)
Activity monitor shows plenty of free RAM (4gb +-) and no page outs.. 90% of the processor is idle, but still it hangs.. it's getting really frustrating..
A clean install has already been done so no 3th party apps are installed..
    Any ideas

Filip, the Trim command has nothing to do with. Be aware that you have to reset the Trim command everytime you update the OS. The only "easy" method to set the Trim command is with the latest version of TrimEnabler (2.2) which may not work anymore when the next update comes out, research that before you use it. The older versions of TE are crapware. To do it yourself with Terminal commands (Grant Pannel) is even trickier.  The Intel SSD has Grabage Collection in its controller, thus it is not a big disadvantage when the Trim command is not set.
The 1.5GB/s "problem" is only when the SSD connects, thus setting "never sleep" for the harddrives is a good idea; do not restart too often.

  • MBP running Mac OSX Leopard 10.5.8 cannot get past login screen even in safe boot

Help!  I have a Macbook Pro purchased in 2009, running Mac OSX Leopard 10.5.8 which froze while running Adobe Illustrator.  On reboot, it won't allow me to go past the login screen.  I tried starting up from the disc, running disk verification and repair and repairing disk permissions, and trying to start up in safe boot, all to no avail.  When the login screen comes up it gives the name of my hard drive with a (2) after it, which seems strange.  Any suggestions short of reinstalling the system software?  I don't want to lose my applications/data!

My 1 year old MBP running OSX has got more sluggish. The little multicolored spinning timer wheel keeps appearing a lot more now, and I hate it! My MBP takes drastically longer to boot when i turn it on as opposed to when I just got it. My web pages take a long time to load. Can anyone help me? WHat can I do to speed up my MBP. I am a novice mac user. Again my mac is getting slower by the day and i dont know how to increase its overall performance. Is there any simple software that can boost overall performance or will I have to reformat my MBP? I have a 200gb HD with 50 gb free and 4 gb of ram.
    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Launch the Activity Monitor utility. Pull down the list near the top and set it to "All Processes". Click on the "CPU" column heading to put the highest CPU consumers at the top. Also click on the "CPU" tab in the lower part of the window to check the value for "% Idle". If that value is much above zero, check the other categories for signs of resource problems. If nothing there points to a possible problem, launch the Console utility and look for messages that might suggest a problem. If you see messages that you have trouble interpreting, post them here and someone should be able to help.

  • Bootcamped MBP spins on OSX boot, but is able to boot WIN7.

I have a Bootcamped MBP. Booting into OSX results in a completed progress bar and a spinning wheel, but the Windows7 partition boots perfectly. On a OSX safemode verbose boot I see the following errors: "incorrect number of thread records", and "the volume macintosh hd could not be repaired after 3 attempts".
I've booted into the recovery partition and attempted to "repair" the partition, but no luck. The OSX partition shows as unmounted and fails when a mount is attempted.
    Any ideas?
EDIT:  "EFI Partition" now shows as an available partition. OSX partition no longer appears.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
The Mac OS X volume is damaged. The only thing you can do is to start into Recovery, erase it in Disk Utility and reinstall Mac OS X. If you don't have a backup, use DiskWarrior to try to recover data

  • MBP Clock Issue OSX Mavericks

I assume this has something to do with timer coalescing in OSX Mavericks, but intermittenly when waking from Sleep the clock will remain at the time I closed the lid and will not update.  The only way to "force" the update is to open Date & Time Preferences, at which point the computer will realize the issue and correct.  However, if I close Date & Time preferences too quickly after it has correctly adjusted the time, it will revert back to the earlier, incorrect time.
I have several applications that I use constantly (Parallels 9, iMessage, Twitter, iTunes) that I have tried to systematically stop using one by one to find the issue, but the problem persists.  This only started happening since the Maverick's update.
    I'm on a late 2012 MBP, non-retina, 750GB HDD, i7 processor.

So, more information- issue is not related to computer "Sleep".  Today (again while traveling, all within same time zone).  Opened computer- time was accurate.  After about an hour of working, time reverted back to 6:05AM.  it is actually 11:06AM.
Computer has not slept- machine is set to automatically updated by internet, Apple American server, automatic timezone is off (toggled it before the holiday to try to see if that helped).
When I opened date and time preferences- the time immediately corrected itself.

  • Can a MBP 9.1, OSX 10.8.5 boot Windows 8 from SSD in optical bay?

Can a MacBook Pro 9.1 running Mountain Lion 10.8.5 boot Windows 8 from an SSD mounted in the optical bay?
Please don't reply with information about doing this with older Macs, previous OSX or Bootcamp versions. There's a mountain (like in the movie "Idiocracy") of old info out there -- all relevant in the past and with older stuff, undoubtedly; but I'm seeking the latest knowledge about the latest hardware and software, based on actual experience.
    Thanks!

  • Widgets are disappeared  from Notification Centre - MBP 9.1/OSX 10.10.3

    Hi evreybody!
I have installed OS X 10.10.3 yesterday, and today i have noticed that the widgets from the notification centre are disappeared.
    To be more clear:
Before the upgrade I was able to use the calculator or have other type of widgets in NC, now the calculator is disappeared and the other widgets are not there anymore.
Does anyone have the same problem?
Is It part of the upgrade or it is a bug?
    looking forward,

  • No 1920x1080 output to external monitor from MBP 2011 OSX 10.6.8

    Hi, I have a MBP 2011 running OSX 10.6.8.
I have recently purchased an Asus ML249H Monitor and the Kanex Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Cable 10 ft (3 m) MDPHD10FT.
The monitor should display at 1920x1080 natively but does not. The MBP max output resolution is 1600x900 on this screen. Is this a known issue with the MDPHD10FT cable or is it OSX? What it the work around to get 1920x1080.
    Thanks

i had to go into iCal Preferences and delete my account and then put it back in.  Everything is working fine, now.

  • •My Bootable Backup Solution for OSX & XP on MBP 17"

    Hi,
I thought I would share my solution to getting a bootable back up of both my OSX partition and my Boot Camped XP partition on my MBP 17"
If you have ever had a HD meltdown and had to re-install everything, your probably now like me, a back up fanatic! I was getting bugged because I had no way to have redundant HD backups that I have on my G5 for my MBP.
Well I found a way to create swappable bootable back up HD's for my MBP (with a OSX & XP partition).
Now I'm sure others have found ways to do this (probably even easier) but this was my solution and its been fully tested. So if you want to have a completely mirrored HD to the one in your MBP, so if it tanks you can just install the back up and its ready to go, heres what I did,,,,
You need the following items (I already had them but here are some links).
    Synchronize Pro X
    http://www.qdea.com/pages/pages-sprox/sprox1.html
    Casper XP
    http://www.fssdev.com/products/casperxp/
OWC 2.5 HD enclosure or new HD with enclosure (make sure its size matches the one you have!
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/add-ons-and-hubs/enclosure-kits
A Philips head "0" screw driver & a Torks No. 6 (if your swapping the drive your self)
    Once you have the above....
    1. Install (or have an Apple Pro instal) the blank HD (soon to be your bootable back-up).
    2. Run you MBP instal disk.
    3. Install Boot Camp (Run the size partition you want I used 50/50)
    4. Install XP
    5. Re-install your old HD (with all your stuff on it:)
    6. Plug in your new external back-up firewire HD
    7. Open OSX partition and launch Synchronize Pro to replicate your OSX partition to the external drive.
    8. Restart and open XP partition and launch Casper XP to replicate the XP partition to the external drive.
    9. As needed, repeat steps 8 & 9 to keep your external drive up to date with your internal drive.
Now should tragedy strike your internal drive, you have a ready made replica you can just install and go!
Granted this may not make sense for everyone, but I have 48 gigs of games and server files on my XP partition (all the games and software that will never be released for Macs) that I NEVER want to go and re-install, Not to mention all the Windows speed tweaks and tricks:)
    I hope this helps someone:-)

I agree with "BillF". Your problem is not with the computer but with the windoze installation. Like it or not, I think you are going to have to bite the bullet and do a reinstall of windoze including a fresh export of the windoze drivers. Unfortunately, even though you are running on a Mac, it's still windoze and you know how windoze is, right? When you do reinstall, don't forget to completely erase the windoze partition (don't just install over the current installation) or you may just end up with the same problems all over again.
"If only Explorer was still available for the new Macs..."
I know what you mean. Exactly why I still run the nasty thing. That and a nutritional label program that I can't live without.....
PS Just in case I would consider reinstalling Boot Camp as well....

  • Trying to watch full screen and still be able to use the MBP Desktop

I have a 2012 MBP currently running OSX Mountain Lion. I have had no issues connecting my MBP to my HDTV, however, when I watch a TV show or movie in Full Screen I am unable to use the MBP desktop. Is this possible, and where can I change the setting, so that I can still access the desktop while using the extended or mirror display with the show on my HDTV?

    Play the movies with VLC.
    <http://www.videolan.org>
In its Video preferences, uncheck "Black screens in Fullscreen mode" and set "Fullscreen Video Device" to your external display.

  • LightRoom CRASHING on Snow Leopard OSX 10.6

Updated to Snow Leopard and LightRoom has become very unstable, It crashes if I try to update a folder location, exporting to web, etc
Is anyone else going through this? any updates/fixes on the way?
I tried 32b and 64b, I reinstalled LR but nothing helps... I will have to get my old XP PC up and running on a demo version of LR to meet deadlines.

You can have the images on a remote drive, just keep the catalog/previews local.
I finally got it to work, I "formated" my MBP and installed OSX 10.6 from scratch (you have to erase the harddrive) once its installed DONT RESTORE from a timemachine backup.
So I had to re-install every piece of software and hunt all my serial/activation codes. I did copy my data manually from the TimeMachine backup drive. But this was a half-day event to get this working...
I also copied my LightRoom presets back so it wasnt their fault.
Apple sure is taking a step back on this release of OSX, reminds me of the early Vista days....
    Anyway Peace!

  • Network Storage Drive for Mac OSX and XP

Hi I am a new apple owner with a MBP 17 running OSX. I also have two other PC laptops in the house.
    I have a Linksys G wireless router.
What I would like to do is to have a dual HD enclosure that I can plug into my wireless router so that I can share data between my MBP and my PC laptops via the network. I would like to use dual HDs so I can mirror them for back up purposes.
My question is how do I set this up so both my MBP and PCs can use the same HD to store/share data? Suggestions on specific hardware to buy would be welcome as well.
    Thanks for you help,
    Vik

You should simply get a network storage drive like this:
    http://westerndigital.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=152&language=en
you can attach to it a second USB hard drive for backup. If you shop around you'll get better price than directly from WD.
Or you can go for Mirra which in my opinion is a much better bet as it will automatically backup folders you want and sync them between computers:

  • OSX 10.6.4 goes to stand by mode unexpectedly

    Hi!
I have an intel based MBP and since OSX's last update I am experiencing a new problem. Every now and then the system goes to standby mode unexpectedly while I am actually using the computer. It seems to happen when I am typing and I tought there maybe was a specific key triggering the standby mode, but so far I found no such logic in it (and sometimes it happens when using the keyboard, sometime the remote with Frontrow).
    Thanks for any assistance!

I am not familiar with that. I would run some basic repairs though....it may help with both issues.
Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job.
    After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.
