MBP A1150 2.16 installing 4 gig of ram

Hello everyone, has anyone installed 4 gig of ram on this older MBP? it is a A1150 2.16 duo core 15" machine. If you look on the original specs apple says no the machine only supports up to 2 gigs. I've read in allot of places if you use the correct ram that yes indeed you can put 4 gigs in that machine. Has anyone done it successfully around these parts? If you talk to the RAM dealers they say they do it all the time but i would rather hear from someone not trying to sell me something. My machine is getting slow, i push it hard with 10.6 installed, parallels running XP then have entourage and my financial software running. thats asking allot of this old machine but other then being a bit slow she is great. Thanks all in advance.

If it's a Core Duo model it only supports 2 GBs. If it's a Core 2 Duo model you can install 4 GBs but only 3 GBs will be usable. You can also install only 3 GBs (one 2 and one 1 GB modules.)

  • Has anyone installed 8 gigs of ram on their MacBook Air 11inch?

Hello everyone, I am in the market for a high end mobile/light laptop and I am trying to decided between a Macbook air Bootcamped with win7 64bit and an Asus ul30 with upgraded SSD and 8gigs of ram. With the upgrades the Asus is a tab bit cheaper, but the Air is definitely lighter and more mobile. I have seen a few youtube videos of the Air perfoming well with heavy tasks, but I would like my new laptop to carry 8 gigs or ram (2 sticks of 4gigs). I know the Air has an upgrade to 4gigs for $100, but has anyone tried installing 8 gigs? If so, are there any complications?
I know the ceiling on the spec sheet is 4gigs, but normally that is set b/c they are only offering up to a 4 gig upgrade. 8 gigs would be much nicer.
    Thanks in advance
    Chris

Here's one minor complication: the Flash chips are soldered onto the logic board itself, thus upgrading the RAM (as I'm planning to do for my aluminum MacBook) isn't something that can be done by the user. That's why people are recommending spending the extra $100 when you order.

  • Installing 2x1 Gig extra Ram

    MSI P35 Neo2- FR
    2 x 1 Gig Ram
    Windows XP
    Video 8000GT  one Gig Ram
    Intel Dual Core E8500
    Bios 1.8
    Newbie --
I am thinking about installing 2 x 1 Gig extra Ram, I understand that Windows XP 32 bit, will only recognised a total of 3 Gig. Does this mean that the system only operates of 3 Gig of Ram, all be it 4 Gig of Ram is inserted?

    You could buy 2 x 512Mb modules......
You will not really see big increase in performance for day to day tasks. If you edit photos or do media work then yes you will see speed increase.
On a sidenote:- Did manage to acheive 3.5Gb seen buy XP pro, by dropping to a 64Mb graphics card.....

  • Things have been running a bit slowly on my mac of late, several months after having installed 8 gig of fresh ram

    Good evening, folks.
I'm running with a 13 inch 2011 macbook pro.  Some months ago, I upgraded from 4 to 8 gigs of ram.  Things were snappy and running very smoothly, however, over the past several weeks or so, I've noticed a decline in efficiency.  I do run my chrome browser constantly, usually itunes is open, but beyond that my applications are open only when they are in use.  I do have usually 2-3 spaces available as organization of my display.  I've ran an EtreCheck report, however, I don't know how to interpret it. Any help?
    Problem description:
recently installed 8 gigs of ram on my macbook pro, worked excellent for some time….i seems like however now it’s running on only 1.46 gig ‘wired’ ram.  Not sure what’s up.

  • PowerBook Won't Start with Extra Gig Of Ram

    Hello World,
Well...so much for do it yourself. God knows I've done it before but here's the story. I just bought a used Powerbook G4 with OX 10.5.8 running at 1.5 Ghz with one Gig DDRSDRAM. I bought another gig stick of ram...put both of them in to night and the Powerbook will not start. So in the interest of trouble shooting...I installed each gig of ram individually. They each said...individually...that they were 1gig DDR SDRAM stick. The computer started with each stick of ram so I know they both work. I was under the impression that the G4 Powerbook could take 2 gig of ram max in configuration of 2---1 gig sticks.
OK....There it is. Any ideas or help would be much appreciated. Thank you Dave R

AFAIK you are correct that the 2GB configuration should work. There is a history of one DIMM slot going bad, but then the computer should still start, just not show the bad slot in the total RAM. You might still try running with one stick in one slot, then the other slot as a check.
Some users anecdotally seem to find the machines fussy about RAM, although usually manifested in erratic operation, not failure to start.
What exactly happens when you try to start with 2GB? Nothing at all? No start sound? No optical or HD drive noise? No screen light/response? No sleep light blinks?

If you're running Mac OS X 10.8.x ou can purchase iPhoto version 9.x from the App Store. If you purchase iPhoto at the App Store you will automatically get the most up-to-date version and you won't need to install the 9.4 update.

  • Putting 16 gigs of RAM in a non-Retina Display MBP

I see that the "new" non-Retina Display MacBook Pro shows a max of 8 gig of RAM.  But I'm seeing kits for 16 gig, and even the Apple Store people seem equivocal about whether it will handle 16.  Is there any harm in putting 16 gig in it?  Any benefit?  For that matter, is there a general answer to this question?  What prevents me from putting as much RAM as I can find in?  I'm told that there are firmware limitations, but again, I'm hearing different answers from different sources.  Thanks!

    BobFromIN wrote:
Pardon my ignorance, but what are Apple PROMS?
Correctly stated I should have used "eprom". That is the firmware programming on the memory module that tells the computer what the memory is, how it is laid out and tells the memory how to behave. Memory without Apple eproms tends to either not work or to function erratically in a Mac - literally no guarantees. Hence the recommendation is to always get your memory from an retailer that  has a history of testing their memory. Those retailers should all give 'lifetime warranty' and you want retailers that have been around a while. There have been tons of memory suppliers that lasted only a couple years.
The other side of the equation is that not all memory is created equal. Some memory modules are made by the chip manufacturers. Micron is the only US chip manufacturer and they make Micron Original and Crucial brand memory. Samsung, Hynix and several others are all high end chip companies that also make their own modules. If the chip manufacturer also made the module then they are referred to as 'original'. (the module being the PC Board containing the chips and afore mentioned eprom) Modules can be made by anyone. Anyone can buy any chips from any manufacturer and make up a module with them. These are typically called 'third party' or 'non-original' memory. WIth those the quality runs the full spectrum with much wider quality control than from original manufacturers.
There are good third party memory! Don't get me wrong. You just want to make sure the retailer that sells it to you has enough reputation to care whether they are selling good stuff or not.

  • Install FCP 5.0 on dual gig g4 with 1.5 gigs of ram

Will FCP 5.0 work on a dual 1.0 g4 with 1.5 gigs of ram?

This is my current cofiguration. However, I would highly recommend a new video card, the stock card with that computer will not allow Motion to operate. You really want an ATI Radeon 9800 Mac Edition made for the 2x-4x AGP computers like the 1 gig dualie. Good luck.

  • Adding a gig of ram

A convert from the mini last march, I am recently new to the iBook. I am proud to own a 1.42 gighertz g4 60 gig HD CD/DVD burner 14 inch display 9550 chipset modern marvel.
So I gather that the 512 megs default is built in and I have a free dimm slot that I can put a gig in? Is that right? If so, even if it's easy, I am having it done at the store. Guess I coulda just called!
There is something else I am curious about and that is replacing the 4,200 rpm HD with one of those expensive, fancy, new, cool running 7,200 rpm laptop drives.
I am assuming that perhaps an actuall Apple store would not install such a thing. But can a non Apple owned Apple shop do such a thing, a licensed tech or some such thing where I do not have applecare and am taking responsabilty for something that might go wrong? I would not do this for a long time anyhow.
    Enlightenment please.
And by the way, I am actually very happy with the performance of my iBook as is. If I can upgrade the ram, that's just inevitable. I sure am curious what a 7,200 rpm HD plus 1.5 gigs of ram would do for the already excellent performance though.
I am pretty fanatical about my iBook and plan on using it for a very long time before needing something new, except for maybe the next gen mini for my TV.
    Thank you,
    William
    ibook g4 1.42 gigahertz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi William,
Yes, you can put 1Gb in the empty slot. I suggest getting your RAM at Crucial.com. Crucial has a RAM guide, so you get the exact RAM that you need (at a pretty decent price). Apple has a RAM guide that will help you install the RAM into your iBook.
I suggest getting a external hard drive over getting an internal installed because you risk complications. No matter who opens your iBook, you risk having future problems. The other reason is that its great for backing up your internal hard drive. One should always backup their hard drive just incase anything happens to your computer. One can't predict the day when a friend trips over their own feet; knocking your iBook on the floor with a huge crash. The most annoying thing to carry around when traveling is the Mac OS X install discs. I hate bringing them with me because I am in constant fear that I will loose them. The reason I bring them with me is because if something happens while I am away, I can troubleshoot my problem. I can startup from the install disc and then run Disk Utility, Archive and Install, Erase, and partition my hard drive. Once someone has a problem on the road; they will never leave their house without the discs. Instead of carrying around those discs, I partitioned one of my external hard drives into three sections, one for backup (140Gb), one for Mac OS X Tiger (10Gb), and the last one is for Panther (10Gb. I gave my girlfriend an iBook and she has Panther on it). This means I am equipped to startup my computer without using my internal drive.
Have you ever lost your iTunes library or your TurboTax data? Well, by backing up your hard drive (internal to external), you can save all your vital data incase something happens. You will find it a life saver if anything ever happens.
If you are looking into external hard drives, I suggest anything from LaCie, SmartDisk, or Western Digital
I recommend the LaCie D2 Hard Drive Extreme w/ Triple Interface, SmartDisk CrossFire, or the WD Dual Option.
I use a SmartDisk CrossFire for both my iTunes library as well as my iPhoto library. If you need help moving your iTunes library you might want to look at Knowledge Base Document #301748 explains How to Move Your iTunes Library.
If you truly want an internal hard drive put into your iBook, you can get it done by an outside company like PowerBookResQ. It will cost you $350 instead of $160 for the external. With the external like the CrossFire, you get 160Gb, 2 FireWire Ports (so when your hard drive is plugged in you can still use FireWire), USB 2.0, and more at a lower price.
    I hope that helps,
    Jon

  • 16 Gig of RAM but only 3.2 gig showing as available in CS5

    Hi,
This is my first post so I hope it is in the right place.
I have just received my new machine. It should be quite a monster. It is a top of the line i7 2600nCPU @ 3.4 GHz running Windows 7 64 bit  with 16 gig of RAM and 3 drives. Drive 1 for windows and programmes; Drive 2 for data and Drive 3 (a crucial SSD) for the photoshop scratch disk. So it can access Open GL it has a Nvidia GeForce 570/PCI/SSE2 graphics card. It is a fresh install. There are no other programmes running.
After the instal the first thing I did was go to edit -> preferences->performance only to find that I only had only 3,255 MB of ram available. I would have thought that is way way low. I was expecting somthing more like 15,000 MB.  Does this sound right and if not what is going on here?
Also, I plan to be working with HDR photography with up to 9 full res shots (captured Raw) with lots of adjustment layers. I have set cache levels to 4 and tile size to 128K. Does this sound about right?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Noel,
Thanks for that. Reinstalled and chose the right options this time. Now I have 14.6 gig of available RAM - much more like it. I have set ram to 90% (13200).. or do you suggest I stay within thier reccomended range of 8066-10560. Bear in mind that I have s fully dedicated high spec 128 gig SSD drrive sitting there as the nominated scratch disk.
    Again thanks for your help.

  • Leopard on a G4 Laptop w/ One Gig of RAM?

My older brother has a nine-year-old G4 laptop (15") with one gig of RAM, running Panther (10.3.x). He is not computer literate and hasn't kept up with upgrades, etc, over the years.
Question: Can he install and run Leopard (10.5) on this machine with one gig of RAM? He only uses the computer for the web and email, so doesn't need a lot of RAM, but is one gig even enough for Leopard and one or two open apps?
If not Leopard, can he install/run Tiger (10.4)?
I'm just trying to help him upgrade as far as he can reasonably go. I assume his machine might allow for additional RAM as well -- anybody know how much RAM a nine-year-old G4 can take?
    Thanks much!

I'd say he could run Leopard; minimum requirements are found here: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=30496.
Might want to upgrade the RAM, if possible. 2 gig RAM would be better.

  • How do I optimize Mini for 8 gigs of ram?

I have a Mini (mid July 2010) that has worked flawlessly, yet I decided to install 8gigs of ram. At times I can have lots of things going on and with the original 4 gigs it seemed to bog down. Thinking more ram is the answer, of which it's apparently not, the Mini still can bog down even with the 8 gigs.
When checking Utilities and system memory it always has at least 3.5 gigs in a FREE status. No matter if I open almost everything. The system does recognize all 8 gigs it just does not use it all.
Is there some settings I need to tweak? All updates are installed. I'm not sure what to do to get the Mini to utilize all of its available ram. Or am I applying PC logic here?
    Any thoughts?

Which exact RAM is this, got a link?
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

tried to upgrade mi ram memory to 8 gigs of ram n when i started my computer froze on apple screen no beeps or nothing just froze any help would be apreciated thanx

Adding to OG: get the Model Identifier from the apple menu (upper left corner of the menu bar), About This Mac, More Info, System Report - second line.
Then you can see exactly what memory that machine takes from http://www.everymac.com by going to the MBPs and find that model under the correct year.
You can also see the correct memory by going to http://www.macsales.com and find the year and model of the machine.  OWC is an excellent supplier of Mac-compatible ram.
