MBP A1260 (Early 2008): Won't start, black screen, continuously lit LED - bad logic board?

Hello everyone!
I'm having a rather serious issue with my MBP A1260 (early 2008) running the latest version of OSX 10.5. This is what happens (or doesn't happen) when I start it:
Usual start-up sounds (fans, HDD, Superdrive)
No chime at startup
Blank screen (I even can't see anything if I hold it against a light source)
The LED is on continuously. Bright at first, then after a second only dim
No backlight of the screen, no keyboard lighting
No reaction to pressing the volume or brightness keys, even after waiting for a while (the OS isn't password protected)
I tried a couple things and googled for a bit. This is what I've tried so far:
Plug in an external monitor - no signal
Removed the battery, used an old battery (which doesn't hold too much power anymore, but is working) - nothing
Restarted with alt-key pressed to bring up the bootcamp menu - nothing
Reset PRAM and NVRAM (P+R+opt+cmd at startup) - nothing
Reset SMC - nothing
Removed all RAM - nothing
Tried all combinations of RAM modules and RAM banks individually - nothing
As you can see, I've already tried quite a bit to get my computer back up, but there's been no success so far. As far as I can tell, this thing's logic board is broken, which would be a prohibitively expensive repair at about 600€ to 700€. I know the logic board is basically the whole computer, but that's an insane amount of cash for a four year old computer.
Do you wise people have any other ideas how to get this thing running again?
If not, I can only come up with three options:
Sell the MBP on ebay as broken
Buy another A1260 with a working logic board and exchange it or
Pay for the insanely expensive repair
Do you have other ideas?
Luckily, I have another early 2011 MBP, which I'm using right now. But to be honest, it may be the last mac I ever own.
Anyways, I'm thankful for all responses. I promise to keep you updated if I get the machine running again.

Any ideas?

  • MacBook Pro (Early 2008) won't start

    Hello,
I have an early 2008 model MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard and Windows XP through Boot Camp. From searching, I can see that people have had issues booting but their computers had at least turned on - mine doesn't even get that far.
I went to use the computer yesterday and was unable to turn it on. I looked up the Apple support website on another computer and tried the two fixes there (I believe it is called resetting the PRAM and SRAM?) but still no luck.
The battery light indicates that the battery is fully charged and there is no indication on the computer that it is turned on, no light on the opening clip button thing and no light on the Apple symbol.
I am thinking this could be the Logicboard issue but I have never had a problem with video before.
    Any help/advice?

    Simular issue here.
Last night, I closed the lid, putting the machine to sleep, as always.
This morning, I opened the lid again, it started with a Black Srceen, so I though "Let's turn the backlight up" No function there "Reset display?" I closed and re-opened lid, nothing "Restart!" pushed power-button, followed by enter, still nothing, so I held down the power-button to completely kill the machine, then to boot it up. I pushed the power-button again... It started up the fan and disc-drive for 1.5 seconds, then shuts down again.
I've tried it all, reset SMC, PRAM, checked power-cord, check the battery, boot without battery, re-insert ram, but nothing!
It seems the power-supply goes on, asks the logic-board for activity, get's no answer, and commits suicied again.
I'm out of Apple-care, I live in Denmark, so no genius bar for me.
    Thanks in advance!

  • MBP won't boot, black screen, no white LED, clicking hard drive noise

Hey everybody, so the title basically summarizes it all. I connected an IDE HDD to my Macbook Pro through a USB enclosure, which had an AC IN jack, for plugging it into an electrical outlet (which I did) and the moment I connected it to my computer's usb port, the screen suddenly went black. I disconnected the HDD, and tried to turn on my MBP but it was no use. Ever since I have tried again and again to turn it on, but the computer will not boot. I have performed all of the suggested steps by Apple (PRAM reboot, holding down different keys while pressing the "on" button, etc.) but it's been worthless. My hard drive is okay, since i took it out and found out that all of my information and files were there. Still, whenever I try to turn the computer on, a clicking sound can be heard, as if the HD was trying to spin but failed. I have no display whatsoever, and no white LED in the front. I am truly desperate and would appreciate anyone's help big time.
    Thanks a lot,
    Luis

Thanks for the reply but it isn't a hard drive issue.  I have tested the hard drive in an external enclosure and it's working fine.  I even put in another hard drive i have and it wont boot that either.  I'm thinking its a logic board issue.  Any one know best place to get logic board replacement near london for cheap

My MBP  15" early 2008 / 10.6 ((2.4GHz Core 2 Duo/2GB/256MB VRAM/200GB 5400rpm)  is not working after looking to aYouTube short film. It made a strange strong noise , I closed it and when I switched on again I have a gray display and a frozen wheel on it... Can you help? Do I have to repair or change any part ?  Thanks

That model has a known fault in that Nvidea sold Apple and other computer manufacturers bad GeForce 8600M GT video chipsets that failed eventually. Apple had a program that repaired this at no cost to the owner but it expired almost two years ago.
If this is what happened to yours, and the symptoms suggest so, the only proper fix is a new logic board and I amd pretty sure Apple no longer has parts. When my Late 2007 MBP (same faulty chipset) failed, Apple told me there were no more parts and they could not even do the fixed-rate "depot repair" on mine even though I was willing to pay the ~US$300 for the repair.
The early 2008 MBP is on the vintage and obsolete list:
Vintage and obsolete products - Apple Support
The fact that yours is shown as "vintage" means Apple will not work on it but an independent service provider MAY be able to get the parts from Apple. However, as so may new logic boards were required to satisfy the repair program, from a practical standpoint boards for these are hard to find.

  • Fresh install on a MBP 15" (early 2008)

I am going to install a fresh 500 GB Seagate Momentus XT into my MBP 15" (early 2008). I wish to do a fresh install of LION.
I have made an install disk for LION.
Will this work, any help will be greatly welcomed.
    Thanks

You said you have a Lion install cd right? Boot to that disk. Then run the installer. The reason why the other disks wernt working is because they are UPGRADE cds. You need Leopard on the hard drive to use them. But the Lion cd does not need Snow Leopard to run. I myself have done a clean install of Lion using a cd. So, boot the Lion cd (be patient, can take a long time to boot to the cd), and then click Reinstall OS X Lion from the utilitys screen. Follow the installer and you should be good to go. Post back if you have any more problems!!!

Reset the SMC and PRAM. If it doesn't work, boot in safe mode -Mayús button during boot- and do your normal activity

  • MBP 15" Early 2008 No Numpad and Numlock?

I have a MBP 15" early 2008 model. I am unable to figure out how can I use a numpad on this keyboard? My keyboard is identical to the one shown in this picture:
    http://www.gadget.co.za/imageLib/HomePage/SeriousHardware/MacBookProKeyboard.jpg
Please help figuring out how to use numlock and numpad on this keyboard. I have tried using fn+f6 and all other random configurations that I found online but am still not able to use the numpad. Any suggestions are welcome.
    Thanks

NumLock key has been taken out from early 2008 MBPs. Here's an exerpt from MacWorld review confirming it.
    From MacWorld review:
One thing that has changed from the previous MacBook Pro is the row of function keys at the top of the keyboard. The location of the media, volume, and keyboard illumination keys has been changed, there are new keys to control Expose and Dashboard, and *the NumLock key (as well as the rest of the numeric keypad) is now gone.* However, the keyboard is nice and springy and has a comfortable, non-spongy feel.

My Apple TV is just showing an apple on a black screen. The led is constantly flashing???

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Which Apple TV do you have.

  • IMac (early 2008) won't boot past grey screen and has lines going vertical.

I have an early 2008 iMac that won't boot up past the grey apple screen.  I've tried booting from the install CD to no avail and it also will not load my windows partition (boot camp).  I've reset all the things I think I can reset and also tried starting in safe mode with no luck.  Has anyone experienced this before and if so, how did you fix it??  I suppose I should note as well that the ram has been upgraded to 4gb (myself).  It worked great for quite a while then I periodically got the lines along with a frozen screen but usually a restart fixed it.  I'm up against a wall with it now and short of taking it in to the genius bar (closest one is almost 3 hours away) I don't know what else to do.
    Any thoughts?
P.S. I've attached a picture of the lines.  It gets to here and then freezes.

I suppose I should note too that when I try to boot from the CD, the screen dims and tells me to restart after a minute or so.

  • My Macbook Pro (early 2008) won't boot, then booted, now won't boot again.

    Hey all,
    Summary:
My GF's Macbook Pro (Early 2008, non-unibody I believe) "died" earlier this year without notice or a cause for why, then it worked months later, then it didn't again.
    Symptoms:
It stopped booting, with the only signs of life are:
The annoying boot sound that you hear right-away, like a winding sound. "Weeeeah woooo"
A fan turns on immediately after the sound.
The front light (on the open button) is solid.
The battery will light up and show how much juice is left.
The only thing to do from here is to hold down the power for 10 seconds.
Don't worry, my story gets more interesting...
Now, I had another computer and my GF didn't need her macbook seriously for a while, so I didn't research the problem or how to fix it, until last week.  Perusing the various help forums and communities, I came across the reset SMC suggestion, so I decided to try a few things on Apple's SMC reset page.
I tried a couple things, including taking the battery out, and LOW AND BEHOLD: IT CAME ON, like nothing happened!  The screen was fine, the performance was fine, it updated (to the new Safari and iTunes, as an example) fine, and it restarted fine multiple times.  One of the main reasons I wanted to get it working was to save some family pictures we had saved, so I started uploading the images to an image cloud site. I'm sending them at full-res so it takes a while and I go to sleep around 2 am so I'm not too late into the office in the morn.  When I wake up, I go to check the image upload progress and the laptop is Off. I figure it just went into standby after finishing, so I hit the power button...
And it doesn't boot again.  It's back to the same issue as before. I try doing what I did last time, then resetting the SMC, but nothing has worked this time.
Any ideas? It's out of warranty of course, which is why I'm here.
    Thanks in advance!

Since no one else is answering, I’ll jump in.
Your story is interesting indeed.  I’m not sure I can help you fix the Mac but it sounds like there is a reasonable chance of recovering the data.
I assume it came with installation disks.  Will it boot from them?  If so run Disk Utility from there and try to repair the system disk.
For the hardware problems on your Mac it is time to take it to Genius Bar at an Apple store for a free diagnosis and estimate of repairs.
    Genius reservation http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ .
It could be your disk failing but it sounds more like flakey electronics in the system.  Let’s assume is is the system board until a Genius tells you otherwise.  If so, you can simply put the working system disk in an external enclosure, mount that on your other Mac and copy the data.  Here is a source for the inexpensive hardware you would need:
    Toolkit: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/TOOLKITMHD/
    SATA enclosure: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/ES2.5BPU2W/
There are multiple directions to go from here.  Let me know what happens when you try theses first options.

  • Mac Pro (Early 2008) Won't Bootup

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro that for the last couple of months would randomly restart, or shutdown, or even startup when it was off. I was running OS 10.8.3 and read there were some problems with random restarts, or logouts. However, I'm running 3 other Macs (iMac, MacBook Pro, and Mac Mini) on 10.8.3 without any problems. The only unique thing with my Mac Pro was that I had OWC Solid State Drive installed as my boot drive. Now, when I try to start I sometimes get to the Apple Logo and the spinning cartwheel, and then it shutsdown. Other times I don't even get to the gray screen and it shutsdown. I've tried Safe Boot, Open Firmware, Option Starting - all with the same result. On one attempt it started up as though it were trying to install a firmware update, but would only get about 1/3 of the way before shutting down. Tried to zapp the PRAM but could never get to the point where the Mac would chime. Also tried resetting the SMC, again no effect. Took out the SSD thinking that might be part of the problem, but again, no effect. I even reseated the memory modules. In addition, when I hold the power button I'll get the flashing power light followed by one long tone for about 2-3 seconds
Any thoughts on what to try next?
    Thanks

You sound like a couple other threads and people.
The power management in the 2008. 10.8.2 trouble but 8.3 seems okay.
SSDs always take special care and instructions for handling.
You do not want to try do you realize that "Open Firmware" died with PowerMacs and you are on EFI? Actually yours got the first taste of UEFI / EFI64 which is of itself enough "off" the standard that it should have been updated if possible, is not blessed certifed by Apple and Microsoft for UEFI under Windows.
And you have two PCIe 2.x slots and two that are 1.1 slots. Which makes for issues too.
Things that may be issue and not obvious:
    PRAM battery
    Keyboard or its cable
    any and all external devices
    PCIe cards
Your video card (which is not listed)
    Faulty FBDIMM(s)
The fact 10.8 runs on other hardware has no bearing on how well it was tested and implemented on Early 2008 which are entirely different hardware, firmware, processors, etc.
I saw one person that the front fan had so much dust it was not cooling the system down.
Which leads to: what are you using to monitor system thermal sensor temp readings?
And, please do (on a new fresh clean install of Mac OS) uses SmcFanControl 2.4+
I would hope you kept 10.6.8 and can dual boot, but otherwise, create one for now for testing, some of your reading should have come up with those where it works with SL and had issues with ML (and Lion).
The lack of Rosetta. The need to do a clean install of ML rather than update to new OS over SL (and carry around old stuff for years and multiple OS's).
Sometimes the best test for RAM is to replace with known good new set ($31 Amazon).
Don't rule out video card, especially if it is still the OEM 2600XT or 8800GT.

  • Early 2010MBP won't start from HD, Restore partition or CD (but Target sees CD)

    Hi,
So my MBP threw a wobbler last night.  Started acting slow as ***, and the HD started being a little more vocal than usual..  I thought i'd repair permissions, run some 3rd party first aid and see if i could back it up.  It's not the first time its happened and that process seemed to work. (With hindsight, I should have replaced the HD at that time)
Anyway, it was running so slowly that it took about 10 mins to open up the utility folder in order to load disk utilty and even then the icons were all just the generic "app" ones.  It wouldnt load disk utility and decided to "beachball" instead.  So i waited for that to finish and shut it down.
Upon restarting, the chime sounded as usual, then again, (this time with what sounded cracked in the  middle), then again, then again etc etc
I turned it off at the power button, and tried again, this time it only chimed once and got as far as the usual grey screen with the dark grey apple followed by the spinning icon below.. And here it has hun ever since.
After an hour of hopefulness, i gave up and turn it off at the power, inserted my restore disk and figured i'd try disk utility this way instead (as usual)
It does EXACTLY the same when trying to boot from CD except the moving icon freezes after a while
repeated attempts at booting from CD. - no joy until the last occasion i got the infamous black screen of multiple languages!!!
    Zapped PRAM and SMC
    Still no joy
Tried to start to Target Disk - afer several attempts, the Fire Icon eventually displayed.. Connected to other mac, and it will see the CD but not the internal HD.
I flicked through some readme files on the cd (over fw target mode) in an attempt to test reliability of my cd optical drive and it's fast and as expected.
Disk utility over FW target mode also only shows CD - not HD
Restarted with CD by holding option key, it shows the CD, no HD, No restore volume.
selected CD and press enter, grey screen, grey apple, grey spinning icon...
    hangs
    here we are again
    any ideas???

Sounds like it's time for a new hard drive.
You might, try starting in single user mode. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492
At the prompt type fsck -fy remember to leave a blank space before the "-fy". This will run a file system check, like Repair Disk and repair any problems if it can. If you run into errors run fsck multiple times until it reports OK. Then, type reboot to restart to OS X.

  • Dark spots on MBP 17" (Early 2008) screen

The dark spot has returned. Since my last post (copy below), I've had it into the genius bar for service, and they ended up having to ship it to a repair depot. I am just inside of my 90-days warranty, and it has happened again. I do not know what causes this, as my machine is my baby.
It's like a grey shadow on part of the screen, but it appears clear as day on a white screen (browser, photoshop, whatever turns all the pixels white).
I'm afraid that my last experience with Apple support was AWFUL! My computer was being repaired under AppleCare, but they kept it for 2 weeks before performing any work. I am afraid that if I go t get it repaired now (that I am no longer under AppleCare, and do not have an AppleCare plan), that they'll basically tell me I'm SOL. This shouldn't be happening again.
Dark spot on 10 month old MBP non-glossy screen
    Posted: Feb 17, 2009 9:26 AM
My screen has developed a dark spot near the center of the screen. The MBP itself has been in a hard Speck case since the day I got the computer. No drops, and has been cared for very well. I am still under warranty. Is this something AppleCare or Warranty will cover?
Mac Book Pro (Early 2008) Mac OS X (10.5.6) 4GB RAM

well... you were never under applecare to begin with, that is a purchased extra.
you were under the original warranty which has now expired, which means you are NOT eligible to enroll the machine into applecare.
Call the 800 # & speak with customer relations if you have to. they should be able to fix the machine again as the repair is covered for 90 days.
if you wish not to send it in, they can issue a ticket # which you can then take the machine to a local auth. service center. they can use the ticket / incident # to order parts & fix your machine.
