MBP AC Adapter Shuts Down my 24v to 220v Inverter

Hello,
Here is a question that is both Apple MBP and electrical related.  I hope to find someone with some expertise in both these subjects.
I have a Macbook Pro 17", a 60w ac adapter, and I'm powering my device while on a 220v power, powered by a 600w Pure Sine Wave AC inverter on a 24v DC solar/hydro off-grid system.
Here is my problem:  periodically, I'll plug in my ac adapter to this system, and when plugging in to the outlet, the 600w inverter will shut down.  As soon as I unplug the ac adapter, the inverter will come back on (it is programed to cycle back on after a short), and work for any device by my macbook ac adapter.  It happens infrequently, but when it does occur, it will happen every time I plug in the ac adapter, until...I put the ac adapter into the outler very, very slowly, and kinda push the adapter into the outlet, at a small angle.  I must do this for every outlet there is on the grid.
Now, at the same time my ac adapter is causing an inverter shut down, any other device I plug into the grid—mixer, iPad adapter, 100w light bulb—works perfect.  It's simply the ac adapter that will shut off the inverter. And actually, I have another/second 60w macbook adapter, that will do the same exact thing, but I use it on a macbook 13".
I've read up on my inverter, and about how plugging certain AC devices into it will cause a surge of power in the initial second you plug it in.  At most, for high end electonics, that is 10x surge.  So, with my 60w apple ac adapter possibly surging at 10x 60w, that would be 600w.  Now, my particular inverter is rated at 600w continuous, 1200w surge power.  By design, it should cover the surge possibility.  But, like I said, this is an infrequent occurrence, so why it can manage sometimes, sometimes not, is challenging.
Also, why if I sloooooowly plug in the ac adapter, and kinda at an angle, the act of plugging in the ac adapter won't shut down the inverter?  When I do plug in the ac adapter, it matters not if I have it actually plugged into my macbook pro or not—the problem is just there.
Now I've also read that apple products and ac adapters are senstive things, and that one must use pure sine wave systems.  I have that covered here.  I have no other electronics operating on the solar/hydro grid, so there is no "competition" either.
Luckily, I can get the ac adapter to work, and charge my laptop—which is how I can make this post now—but I really want to know the concrete reason as to what is going on.  Is it a grounding isssue?  Does an Apple ac adapter create a special surge of electricity, unlike other products?  Can an Apple ac adapter get polarized?  Should I actually be using an 85w Apple ac adapter for my Macbook Pro?  I'm just guessing here, as you can read.
I want to stop guesssing, and if possible, do something in the off-grid power system I'm using, to solve the problem.

Hello wise people,
I am still having an issue with Macbook AC adapters "shutting down" my 220v Inverter on my Renewable Energy power system.
This only occurs when my system is running purely on battery power.  When the system has either solar produced or hydro produced energy flowing into the system, the "spark" that the Macbook AC adapters make as I plug them in, occurs but does not shut down the Inverter.
What I can surmise here is that he Macbook AC adapters produce an initial surge that goes above the ratings of my Inverter, or, that my Inverter can somehow mediate the surge only when "backed up" by direct power from either the solar or hydro.
Does anyone have the surge ratings for Macbook AC adapters?  I have made an effort to search the Internet, and it seems to be well documented that Macbook AC adapters do have quite the difficulty with surging on electrical systemes.
Thanks.

  • MBP tries to shut down after 30 minutes of inactivity

    Hello,
After 30 minutes of inactivity my MBP attempts to shut down. An open app, like Safari, will prevent the shut down process from completing. This has been going on for a year and I have not found any way to prevent it. I have tried resetting PRAM, looked in System preferences, updated OS with every dot release and have not been successful.
Any ideas on possible causes and ways to prevent this are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Karl

    Hi nachdenki,
I have checked System Preferences/Energy Saver. Please note that my MBP attempts to shut down completely (vs. going into sleep mode.) My sleep settings are for a time period that is shorter than the 30 minutes of inactivity that is associated with the shut-down. Is there a setting in Energy Saver that affects an automatic shut-down that I may have overlooked?
    Thanks,
    Karl

  • MBP fails to shut down

Lately my MBP fails to shut down. I quit all apps and then click shut down, the dock and menu bar go away just leaving the apple desktop and the mouse (turns to the beach ball after a while). Last week I wiped my computer and started from scratch hoping it would fix the problem but it didn't. I have repaired permissions and reset the PRAM and have taken out the battery and held the power button for five seconds to reset something else (i forget what it is called). I am thinking this has something to do with time machine and my time capsule. Sometimes time machine will attempt to backup, but will sit at preparing for hours without ever mounting the image. I try to stop it but it wont stop and at that point I can't shut down. Isn't time machine supposed to stop when I shut down? Even if i force quit the backupdb process in activity monitor, my computer will not shut down. So as far as I can tell, time machine is doing something to prevent shutdown or something is but it is really getting annoying. Any help is appreciated.

Check your console log using the Console application and look around about your shut down time. Look for information about a process that did not shut down. Usually shutdown problems occur because an application you are using does not completely shut down or stops responding.
Does the computer shut down normally if you don't run any applications? Have you tried creating a new user account, then logging into that account instead of your normal account? Does the computer now shut down normally? Have you tried booting into safe mode to see if the computer will shut down normally?

  • MBP 17inch A1151 shuts down with battery

I just bought a used MBP.  It came without a batter.  It booted fine when I bought it and ran off of my MacBook power adapter (60w).  I ordered a new battery and 85w charger.  Whenever I put the battery in with it started up, the MBP shuts down within 5 seconds.  If I put the battery in when it is off and boot it up, it will not get through the boot process without shutting down.  I left the battery in with the MBP off and plugged in to charge the battery.  It is fully charged.
I have seen reports of this problem and wonder if it needs a new logic board or could it be something else.
Or, if I should just use it without the battery as a desktop computer.

I saw that some people were posting battery reports, so I checked mine.  I booted it without the battery and opened the Power information to see the battery cycle count, etc.  So, i installed the battery and the battery indicator in the menu changed from X battery to plugged battery,  said it is at 96% and charged, but the system info never changed from no battery installed.  I even went to printers and then back to power and it never noted a battery was installed.  weird.

  • MBP (Mid-2012) Shuts Down While Attempting to Start Up (HardDrive I/O Error)

    Hey guys,
I've been having some issues with my mid-2012 MBP (8 GB's RAM, 750 GB HardDrive). It has the latest version of OS X Yosemite installed.
About a month ago, I turned on my MBP, typed in my password and it began loading the operating system. This usually take 30-45 seconds or so for the loading bar to fill up and the desktop to show. And then maybe another minute or two once the desktop is visible for the "startup process" to finish in the background so I can open apps quickly and efficiently.
However, this time, the Macbook took about 10 minutes, got halfway done and I was forced to give it a hard shutdown. I then tried unsuccessfully to start the system again and each time it wouldn't load past a certain point. It then miraculously started working after letting it cool for a few hours.
Fast fwd a month later, my computer seemed much slower than usual. I always was checking activity monitor and my file cache was taking up 4gb of ram at times. My computer would slow down to the point where I had to give it a hard restart often.
Then last week, I started the computer, typed in my password and it started to load. After a minute of trying to load, it shuts off. It no longer loads to the desktop, it simply shuts down after every attempt. So I ran some diagnostics.
While doing the Single-User Mode...it spit back out that I have a HardDrive I/O Error. Also, my hard drive is not mounted when I run disk utility.
All my files are backup online and on external HD. Do you think I need a new internal hard drive? Suggestions?

A hard drive I/O error means that the hard drive is completely damaged and cannot be used anymore, so you need a new hard drive. As you have a backup, you will not lose any data.
It is up to you to replace the hard drive yourself or to take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller. The price difference is not very high, but if you do it yourself, you can choose the hard drive you want to install (7200 rpm hard drives will give you a bit more performance). If you have decided to do this yourself, buy the hard drive at OWC or Crucial.
After getting the new hard drive, use OS X Recovery (hold Command, Alt and R keys while your Mac is starting up) to restore the backup.

  • MBP will not shut down, also F keys etc. not working. Help?

Hello, must preface that I am not a very computer-savvy person, so please explain as if to a four-year old.
My MBP is about 4 years old, but has been working great all that time. Suddenly, a problem.
I realized that most of my F keys have ceased working, such as turning on the backlit keyboard, adjusting screen brightness, and adjusting volume. I thought a restart would fix it, but my machine will not restart or shut down. I click to request it, but nothing happens. I also try to view "about this mac" from the apple-icon menu (wanted to provide that info for this entry), but the spinning beach ball of doom appears for a moment, then vanishes, and the panel with the info does not open. Also, some of my hot corners have stopped working. Otherwise, it works fine. All my software works, and no sudden crashes.
I haven't installed any new software recently, or done anything out of the ordinary to the MBP, for a few months at least.
I haven't forcequitted the machine, tried to start in safe mode, or started while pushing command, R, P, option, or anything else. I did clear the caches and ran disk utility to repair permissions... then saw another post online saying I *shouldn't* do that stuff. Doh.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this? Obviously, the machine is out of warranty, I do have the disks that came with the machine, and I run time machine regularly...but I'd rather not have to do a fresh reinstall of everything, if it can be avoided.
Any help would be much appreciated.

"I haven't forcequitted the machine, tried to start in safe mode, or started while pushing command, R, P, option, or anything else."
    do command-option-p-r
if that does't do it reset the smc.

  • MBP hanging on shut down

If anyone can help me with this, it would be most appreciated. Each night when I shut down my MBP, it goes through the normal shut down procedure, but then gets stuck on the spinning shut down clock and I have to do a forced shut off.
Someone in another thread suggested the computer was searching for a attached external HD that didn't have time to unmount, but I manually unmounted all attached drives before turning off the MBP.
It can't be good to do a force shut down every night, so I hope someone can help me with this one.
    Thanks,
    Ron

Nope, no new ram... everything is from the factory.
I suppose I could force shut down every night, but I'm used to pressing the off button and going to sleep. These days I've been waiting for it to shut down (it shuts down normally about 20% of the time).
    Thanks.

  • MBP 15" randomly shuts down.

My MBP will at times randomly shut down, i have had the mbp for about one week now and it has probably shut down randomly around a dozen times with minimal use....2 or less hours a day. I wanted to know if there was anything i could do to try and resolve this issue before i contact apple...At times when i reboot the machine after a random shutdown i am greeted with an error saying that the MBP shut down after OSX failed.

I don't buy overpriced RAM because it's easy to removed added RAM, see if problems go away without it, and replace the RAM if that turns out not to be the cause of the problem.
    This is Apple's problem.
Unless the poster has third-party RAM, in which case Apple will first ask him to remove it and test without it. Hence my suggestion to do so.
Some problems need to be handed over to Apple. Some can (and should) be tested first to determine if they even need to be handled by Apple. It's necessary in some cases and can prevent having to send away your computer for no good reason.

  • MBP 15' randomly shuts down: temperature problem?

    Hallo,
I'm having a very serious problem with my MBP unibody (rev B). After a few minute of intense use (3D gaming or just streaming of HD flash video) it shuts down without any warning or alert. The event doesn't show up in the system log and it happens more often while using the 9600GT gpu.
It looks like a temperature managing problem, but the strange thing is that at the restart right after the sudden shut down the temperatures are absolutely normal and the fans seem to work as they should.
    What could be the issue?
Moreover, I need my mac to work and I really can't afford to stay a day or more without it because it's in repair. It's still under official Apple warranty, am I eligible for an immediate full replacement?
    thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
If it was shutting down due to over heating then you'd get some warning like the fans running at maximum revs for a while first ...
Are you saying the Console (All Messages) Log is not showing anything at all at the time of this event ??
It's probably best you contact the place where you bought it and have them take a look, there's nothing anyone can do here about hardware issues. It's highly unlikely you'd be given a replacement but any repairs needed would be covered by your Warranty.

  • MBP won't shut down due to Mail

    Hi everyone,
I've had this problem on 2 different MBPs now- I can't shut down or restart because the Mail application refuses to close. The only way I have found to resolve this is to force quit Mail. I'm wondering if anyone has any solutions or suggestions I can try.
    Cheers,
    Adam

I experienced this same problem for the second time today. I'm using MBP just one month. I tried the recommended directions in this thread for removing the file specified and trying again to command quit mail, without success. But this got me thinking about my preferences I set up in spaces to open mail. Voila! Opened panes in spaces and found a message for connection to my email server awaiting my response. Mail then opened and I was able to quit mail and complete shutdown. Hope this ends my recurring problem and helps you, Adam.

  • My MBP doesn't shut down fast like it used to be

Everytime i shut down my MBP it appears a blue screen and does not shut down!!! I also have to push the ON/OFF Button to shut off!!!! and shows a simbol like this but in a blue screen. Can anyone explain me why this wierd stuff happens to my MBP? Thanx. I also tried to update my MBP but without success!!! HELP ME PLEASE!!!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Is there a preference somewhere that I can change it
No. iPhoto 7 changes the library structure. There were similar complaints when iPhoto 6 changed the library structure over v5.
should I just go back to using iPhoto 06
Do you have an intact v6 library? v6 cannot read (or "back-convert" a v7 library.
Some things simply have not changed: There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services.
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. If you're willing to risk database corruption, you can restore the older functionality simply by right clicking on the iPhoto Library and choosing 'Show Package Contents'. Then simply make an alias to the folders you require and put that alias on the desktop or where ever you want it. Be aware though, that this is a hack and not supported by Apple.
    Regards
    TD

  • MBP 17": Sudden shut down with plenty of battery, then battery warped

My battery warped while in the computer and I had a hard time getting it out. This was after my computer began shutting down without any warning while on battery power. I called my local Apple reseller this morning and was told to bring the computer and battery in so they could check it out. When I arrived, they told me that they had a simple test which they had to run on the computer with the warped battery inserted. Pass: no free replacement. Fail: Replace the battery for me.
The USB gadget they used indicated pass, so I was out of luck. In other words, they said that my battery tested "OK". "But it's warped!", I said. They agreed, but only offered to sell me a new one for $129.95 + tax. I said that I wanted to complain to Apple since the battery was obviously on the way to a more serious problem and might damage my MBP. They said that they would complain if they were me....
I was in a bind since I need to travel soon, so I bought a new battery.
The explanation was that Apple recognizes that there is a problem, but since my MBP/warped battery passed the required Apple test, they couldn't replace it for free. The battery was so warped that I my computer wobbled on my desk! This is crazy! Those of you who have been reporting the sudden shut down had better be very careful. You may be on your way to a potentially catastrophic event in which the battery failure does serious damage to your MBP. I've read some real horror stories about this on the net.
    Are you reading this, Apple?
    -jr

Just a follow-up regarding my old battery:
I put it in the box that the new one came in and intended to recycle it. Then I forgot about it and looked at the box just now. The other side of the battery also warped to the point that I couldn't get the box out of the sleeve that fits around it without tearing it (which I did).
Pretty scary looking. Silver pouches (cells?) exposed and deformed. Afraid of the thing at this point. A fire hazard?
Out of the house in a can it went until tomorrow morning when I will get rid of it legally.
BTW, my deformed and potentially hazardous battery only had a cycle count of 137 when all this fun started....
    Please be careful.

  • MBP won't shut down, freezes

I'm not having this issue with my own MBP but I have heard of people having an issue where they can't shut down their Mac because it freezes on that little spining wheel. They are forced to use the power button. I was listening to a Mac Geek Gab podcast and they mentioned that some people reported that as the only symptom before their HD died. I was just wondering if anyone has had this happen?

I'm not having trouble with my MBP, I just know of people who have had.
They didn't speak about it on the podcast, they just mentioned it. Literally what they said was that some people have said that before their HD's died the only symptom they had was the issue I explained. That was it. But I believe they meant that it happened multiple times, not just once.

  • MBP won't shut down

    Hi eveyone,
I hve a MBP i7 with 8Gb Ram that won't shut down, it just hangs with the greyed cirlcle in the middle of the screen.
I have even left it on overnight and it still won't shut down unless i hold down the power key.
I have run Disk utility and Still no joy.
Any ideas what else i could try?
    Thanks in advance

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
PLEASE DO NOT INDISCRIMINATELY DUMP THOUSANDS OF LINES FROM THE LOG INTO A MESSAGE. If you do that, I will not respond.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
