MBP and dvi monitors

Hi,
Forgot to ask - can I hook any brand name external DVI monitor up to my MacBook Pro without any additional adaptors or cables?
Will it run in dual monitor mode automatically or will it simply mirror the MBP desktop ?

if your Mac monitor has Thunderbolt ports, and the PC monitor is on the end of the daisy chain, then you might be able to do it by connecting your PC monitor’s VGA cable to a Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter (e.g. Apple, NewerTech), connecting that cable’s Mini DisplayPort end to one of the Mac monitor’s Thunderbolt ports, and then connecting a Thunderbolt cable between the other port on the Mac monitor and your MacBook Pro.

MBP and 24" monitor

Hi,
I am getting a 15" MBP and a 24" glossy monitor. When I connect the MBP to the monitor what happens? Where do I type and what do I use as a mouse? Does the $999 monitor come with a mouse and keyboard or are those extra? Do I just plug the MBP into the monitor close the MBP and put it off to the side, then attach a keyboard and mouse to the monitor,or does the MBP need to remain open and if so isn't it going to be distracting? Also would I need to use the MBP as a mouse and keyboard?

The keyboard and trackpad on the computer, or one connected to any USB port. The display needs to be connected to the computer through USB to use any of the display's USB ports.

Mixing VGA and DVI monitors with 5770

Hi everyone,
I've seen the Apple articles and the forum posts about this, but before I need to check my configuration will work before it has to be used on a show at work (the MP is running screens in a venue). I've seen lots of scenarios with people using all DVI monitors or all VGA, but can't find any examples where they are mixed.
Here is my proposed setup:
DVI output - 800 x 600 - First device (DVI input only)
Mini Display Port 1 - also 800 x 600 - Second device (DVI/VGA input but strongly prefer to use DVI) via Mini Display Port -> DVI adapter (passive?)
Mini Display Port 2 - 1376 x 7?? - Monitor running the UI (VGA input) via Mini Display Port -> VGA adapter (active?)
My worry is that there is only one active adapter in the system?
If this won't work, I have two backup plans, which I would also like to know if it will work or not, please. One of the DVI devices has a buffered DVI link out, so I could use that to feed the other DVI device.
So Backup plan 1:
DVI output - 800 x 600 - DVI in of first device
Mini Display Port 1 - 1376 x 7?? - Monitor running the UI (VGA input) via Mini Display Port -> VGA adapter (active?)
MDP 2 not used.
Backup plan 2:
DVI output - 800 x 600 - DVI in of first device

Obviously backup plan 1 is no problem with only two monitors connected.
You have a relatively easy set of conditions. Two of your monitors are single link DVI (resolutions less than 1920 x 1200). One is vga. So a mini-displayport (mDP) to VGA counts as one active adapter and all you need is a a mini-displayport to single linke DVI active adapter for one of the others.
If you look at AMD Eyefinity Validated Dongles chart you would find that a Accell B087B-006B qualifies as an mini-displayport to single link DVI active adapter.
So a possible setup would be:
DVI --> 800 x 600 DVI display #1
mDP --> B087B-006B --> 800 x 600 DVI display #2
mDP --> VGA adapter --> 1376 x 7?? display #3

Connecting ADC monitor and DVI monitor to G4?

Hello,
Like my specs say, I'm running a dual 1 ghz quicksilver 2002 g4 and am trying to connect the 23" display AS WELL as the 15" ADC flatscreen (legacy?)
My video card is only vga and adc and my computer has an agp slot.
So I'm figuring that I need a new AGP card with both a DVI and ADC input...correct? If so, does anyone have recommendations on any? How about alternate routes I should take?

Wacked animated icon colors on MBP and external monitors

Is anyone else having the problem that animated icons (and even the scrolling script on the Apple home page) are displayed as multicolored pixels. I'd upload an image of this, but we can't here.

Yes, I'm having this problem. Apple's Aperture page looks bad, with some weird texturing on the gray gradients as well. iCal icons are another place where they show up in a grainy kaliediscope of colors on both my MacBook screen and the attached 30" screen.
Apple Care has told me to have both units tested, but my money is on this being a graphics hardware problem in the MacBook.

I have the same mini display port adapter and Belkin DVI-HDMI cable (but a Panasonic 42" Plasma HDTV) so just set this up on it to see if I could duplicate your problem, unfortunately for you (but good for me) I can't.
I connected the adapter+HDMI cable before switching the HDTV on and then powered up the MBP. It (the HDTV) came up with my background right away (it's set at Mirror not extended Desktop) and when I run System Preferences/Displays get the following. Sorry but all I can confirm is that adapter+cable combination should work ...

Can't seem to get DVI and external monitors to work (works on windows) ?

I'm going crazy here and I'm starting to think something is broken/wrong with the mbp I just purchased (I'm hoping it's just me and not the mbp)...
I have a BenQ FP91G+ LCD monitor that works fine using dvi with my windowsXP machine. When I try to get this monitor to work using DVI with my mbp all I can get is a black screen. The mbp sees the monitor fine since I can see it in the display settings. I've tried every different resolution available in the display options (with mirroring off and then again with mirroring on). No luck with dvi. However, if I use the vga cable with the dvi adapter things are fine.
I then tried two other lcd external monitors with the dvi input (one a Princeton model here at home, and a different model that I tried in a Best Buy - I think it was a sycmaster). The Princeton at home had the same BenQ problem - just a black screen no matter what I tried. The one in best buy, however, got a 'bit' further when I set its resolution to 800x600 - but even then it was bad since the display was just scrolling vertically.
I'm a bit stumped what is going on. I really should be able have this digital output work since all three of these monitors work fine with the dvi cable on windows.
Is there something seriously wrong with my mbp? What else should I try? Thanks for any help. (I've been searching these forums but haven't found anything yet to help.)

Thanks iVmichael, that makes me feel a little better at least. I'm guessing maybe the issues I'm having might be driver related? Seems odd that all 3 monitors I would have a problem with, but I guess it's possible. I can deal with the dvi-vga adapter usage, just don't want to something to be wrong with the hardware on the mbp.

2.4Ghz MBP and Dell 2405 FPW Monitor

I have a Dell 2405 FPW monitor, and was wondering if anyone else here has been using one in combination with the new MBP and its' 8600GT?
It's not that I've had any problems, but I just haven't found any colour settings that I'm happy with yet, plus the Dell is a 96dpi display and all the fonts look pretty bad to my 'anti anti-alias Windows XP ClearType-honed' eyesight.
Maybe I need to give it more time and tinkering, but I'm considering moving over the 30" cinema display sooner than I would like!

Sorry - I should have given more details.
As you'd probably expect, It was connected via DVI and using the Dell as the main monitor at it's native resolution.
Everything connected just fine, but I just didn't get a good enough picture. I went back to using my XP desktop via DVI, and it just looks so much nicer.
Could it be that my eyes are tuned to a warmer picture than Macs give out of the box? Even the MBP panel appears, at least in my eyes, to have a serious cold/blue tint. I think I'm just looking for reassurance or hints/tips from forum members with the same setup!

I have a 15in MBP late 2013 w/ Mavericks installed. At work, I was hoping to dock the MBP and connect to dual Dell P2414H monitors.

To do so I purchased (2) DisplayPort to HDMI cables and (1) Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter. As for setup, I have one monitor directly connected to the HDMI port on the MBP and the other monitor connect to the Thunderbolt adapter.
I am getting no signal whatsoever on either monitor. I've ensured that each monitor is set to DisplayPort. I can understand a signal issue existing between the monitor and the adapter, but I cannot understand the issue with the monitor connected directly to the MBP via the HDMI port. I checked System Report > Hardware > Thunderbolt and my Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter shows, but port2 contains no connected device (this is where the Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter is plugged). Does anyone know where I can check the status of the HDMI port?
I'm hoping that the issue isn't as blunt as the monitors not being compatible with the MBP. I've used my previous MBP with another, older, Dell monitor via a Thunderbolt to VGA adapter with no issue whatsoever. I've scoured the interwebs with the hopes of finding someone with a similar issue, but I've found nobody.

When the dock is defined as on the bottom, it will appear on the screen of the extended desktop that is lowest.
Move the second monitor where the bottom edges are equal or the Dell is lower and the dock will move there.

Powermac G5 with HD TV and DVI formac monitor

I recently bought a hd tv which I would like to run together with my DVI monitor. I was looking at getting an adc to dvi adaptor but thought it may slow down performance. Then I thought about having two graphics cards. would this be possible? If I had a second better quality graphics card would my processor perform better? I am new to video cards as I am a sound person. Any information would be great.

Run the games first then see if you need to bother. Memory is merely one part of the equation. ONLY mac cards work in macs. If you have looked on ebay and can only find Windows cards bone up on your search techniques as there are literally hundreds of them.
Mac video card would be an idea as a search term.
You have a video card now in an AGP slot. Which is only for a video card. If you buy a replacement card obviously you replace the AGP card you have with a newer AGP card. But there may be no need and until you try you are wasting your time and maybe a lot of money.

Switch 2nd monitor between dvi monitor and hdtv

I have an Intel iMac and I use the mini-dvi output to have a second monitor for working on the computer and also to watch online videos on my hdtv. Both work great. The problem is I have to reach around the back of the iMac to unplug the dvi monitor and plug in the tv and then do it again when I want to get back to work. I am pretty sure that the mini-dvi socket is not built to be used twice a day or more, so I am eager to find a better solution (preferably cheap).

I am using the apple mini-dvi to dvi adapter with a dvi-hdmi cable to connect to the visio 42" hdtv and the same apple mini-dvi adapter with a regular dvi cable to connect to the Sceptre 22" monitor. The TV is in the next room, so it is not really practical to use as a second monitor, besides sometimes my wife wants to watch TV while I am working.
I think what i am going to do is get a small dvi extension cable and leave that connected to mini-dvi adapter which I will leave plugged into the iMac. That way I will just be plugging and unplugging into the dvi extension cable (which is more robust than the mini plug) which will be much easier than reaching blindly behind the iMac. If the extension wears out I can just get a new one rather than having to get the iMac repaired.

I found that the Thunderbolt input accepts the mini-DVI (in my case converter to VGA for a tutorial use monitor)
BUT, you have to really oush it in 'til it clicks. I thought it too loose until I tried it. works just fine!!

2 DVI Monitors and HDMI TV

I recently purchased a new 6 core mac pro with the standard Radeon 5770 card. I'd like to be able to hook up my two DVI monitors (Dell 2405FPW and SP2309W) as well as a Panasonic HDMI 32inch TV to it. I was wondering if this was possible.
Had a live chat with "TECH SUPPORT" at monoprice.com, and they suggested I purchase the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter, as well as the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI (with digital audio) adapter. I purchased the Apple version of the Dual Link adapter and monoprice's HDMI adapter.
I hooked them all up, but am not able to use all three monitors simultaneously. I've read apple's support pages and have seen how you may need TWO Dual Link adapters for DVI displays. but...then how do I get the HDMI tv to work?
Has anyone been able to do this.

When using three displays with one card, all Mini DisplayPort adapters must be the active type. All dual-link DVI, VGA, and some single-link DVI adapters are active, but there don't seem to be any active Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters.
You can use a DVI to HDMI adapter with the DVI port on the card, or with an active Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter, but that won't provide audio over the HDMI link because there is no audio on DVI. You can use a separate cable for audio, or use a special DVI to HDMI adapter that can add the audio from the Mac Pro's optical output to the HDMI link:
