MBP appears to start up in safe boot!?

I have a MBP running 10.6.8
At start up it appears to be starting in Safe Boot without me wanting it to. ie grey screen, apple logo, progress bar in darker grey. This takes about 10 mins.
When it has completed this is is not actually in Safe Boot/Mode but behaves perfectly normal.
It started doing this about 3 months ago for no reason I can fathom.
I have actually started up in Safe Boot successfully to try and kick start the MBP into behaving normally, with no success. I have also reset thr PRAM etc.
Even though the MBP behaves well after start up it is annoyning that it has to take 10 mins to do so each time. Also there is obviously something wrong, which is worrying.
Any help appreciated, Thanks.

Thanks roam

  • My Macbook Pro starts up in Safe Boot by default. How do I get out of it/How do I get my MBP to work normal again?

    Question says it all.
What all started this was that I accidentally spilled a cup of Coffee onto my Keyboard. I instantly dried it with tissues and shut it off. A couple of hours later I was unable to log in. I started the MBP and it started up in Safe Mode (without me initiating it), I was unable to log in. I could enter the password and everything but it kept saying that it was the wrong one. I now got an USB keyboard and am able to log in and operate a couple of programmes, but i don't know how to get out of this Safe Mode again and how to start using my MBP normally again. I need it, have a couple of things that need to be done soon. Can I simply play a backup from my external HDD over it? There is a problem, that all the external Drives don't seem to work.
Help! I'm at my wit's end. Thank you!

Only if your home/renters insurance doesn't cover such damage without raising your rates/dropping you.  Ask first of them if it is worthwhile the claim once you get an estimate for repair.  These repair places are pretty good:

  • Mac starting up in safe boot spontaneously any ideas?

    Hi,
my Mac as suddenly started to start up in safe boot, I'm not instigating this and it doesn't happen every time, I took it into my local apple store but as you might
guess it didn't do it when being checked out, I was given a new Keyboard and mouse, and for a couple of days it seemed to be ok but today it's up to it's tricks
again, I bought the computer in February of this yaer, and i"ve installed Logic pro 9, Pages and Numbers, It also started to lose connection with the mouse,
anybody out there had similar problems and did you find a soution?
       Lewis

There were a few threads on this problem some months back. It seemed to be something to do with Bluetooth triggering a Safe Boot. A restart straight after and it would always seem to boot normally.
The solution then was to not turn on the BT devices - keyboard/trackpad/mouse until the Mac had booted, or at least after the grey screen had appeared in the boot cycle.
Haven't seen this issue for a while and hoped it was sorted. If you haven't already, you could try downloading the combo 10.7.4 installer and re-applying the update.

  • Will not start even in safe boot after installing latest camera update

MacBook Pro will not start even in safe boot after installing latest camera update.
I started my machine and did a software update. Only the camera update needed. So installed and when required I pressed restart. It restarted and did install. Then restarted again. I expected to get to the login screen and it turned itself off. Tried three more times. Each time shutting off. I unplugged everything, and pressed start waiting for log in window. No it shutdown before the log in window. I then tried safe mode and that did not work either on three more occasions.

I have managed to resolve some issues. I can now restart the machine via a CD boot. If I do cmd C into something like tech tool pro, then restart from that disks menu it restarts every time.
If I try a safe start it shuts down. If I try a normal start it shuts down. I have managed to repair permissions and that cleared up some start up permissions but with no improvement to the boot problem. The only way to load is via the cmd-C boot option. Any other ideas?

  • Can only start up in "safe boot"

Yesterday my iMacG5 (Mac OS X Leopard) started making a loud noise (fan) and would not respond to mouse/keyboard, so we shut it off manually. Since then the only way I can start it is in "safe boot" mode by holding down the shift key during start up. Otherwise the Mac logo appears but it doesn't go any farther.
I would like to try to reinstall Leopard.
Do you think this is wise?
Is there anything special I should do when I reinstall?
Do you think it will help?
Will I lose any files by reinstalling Leopard?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
I don't think reinstalling Leopard will fix anything, it will probably just waste your time.
You should fix the existing system or at least check out what that loud noise was, which a reinstall certainly will not fix.
It may have been the harddrive, or the system may have severely overheated.
You should boot into the Leopard DVD by inserting it and rebooting and holding down the "C" key.
Do not install it, but after the Language screen, on menu, top left, under Utilities, run the disk utility and repair the harddrive and permissions. If you get through that, you can probably reboot the system normally and continue to troubleshoot the problem.

  • My iMac is starting with a safe boot

Why is my iMac starting up with a safe boot?

This might stop it booting in Safe Mode. Open Terminal in Utilities and copy/paste only
    sudo nvram boot-args=""
Hit return and enter your admin pword when requested. You won't see anything entered as you type it in. Then hit return again.
(Note: I've never had this happen, so don't know if this is effective or not. Found it in another thread here for this problem. If it doesn't help, it should at least be harmless. Maybe Linc can say; he's far more Unix literate than I. OK, found where it came from:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3965882?start=0&tstart=0)
So looks like either a PRAM Reset or the Terminal command will work.

  • G5 only starts up in Safe Boot mode

We have an older model G5 Dual (no Intel Core) at the office that we tried to install CS3 on. I told them that first we would need to upgrade from 10.3.8 to 10.4.10 -- which they did, and then installed CS3.
But they did it without running the disk utility repair permissions after the OS software installation, as I have routinely done with my Mac Mini at home, after the horror I experienced with the 10.4.9 upgrade.
For a couple of days, the computer ran fine, but I noticed an increase in the fan spinning up yesterday afternoon, then quirky keyboard things -- like I'd select an item with point and click, and it would highlight everything else near it, I'd go to quit an application and it would ask if I wanted to quit all applications. After backing up my current InDesign work files on a flash drive (but not the whole darn art folder), I rebooted and it came up in Safe Boot mode 6 times without holding any key down.
Attempts to boot from disk have failed, even with holding down the "C" key. It's also not allowing us to type out full passwords at the log-in screen... you start typing and after you hit four digits, it clears, then only allows two digits. Weird, huh?
Any suggestions on how we can:
1.) Force boot from disk, and,
2.) Hopefully fix with disk utility whatever wonkiness is occuring?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Not sure if you are still in the same position or not..
Do me a favor and switch keyboards and see what the results are.
(I have dealt with a few diff variations of this problem, and each had a seperate solution.)

  • Powerbook only starts up in safe boot after kernal panic

    Hi everyone,
Here is my problem, My mom.. lol was working on in mail and she though the powerbook crashed, thus she turned the machine off. When she tried starting up again, and it doesn't start up at all.. but gives an error message asking her to restart the system. Thus I did a little research on the internet.. and tried the varouis methods of trying to get the machine to startup into OS X, but it still keeps asking to restart the machine everytime I startsup. I did manage to get it to boot into safe mode /boot.. and then it works ok besides for the airport card that doesn't work. I've tried reinstalling the Tiger, with the archive and install setup.. but that doesn't work either. I'm probably going to have format and reinstall macosx, but i'd rather not because that would mean a lot of valuable info would be lost.. and, no.. I didn't make a recent back up.. stupid me. So, does anyone no what else I could try besides wiping the harddisk and doing a fresh install of Mac OS X Tiger??????? Please help..
    Thank you,
    Sebastiaan
    Powerbook G4 1.5 12-inch   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hey Matt,
I just though I'd let you know, and it might be handy for the other PoBo 12" inch users out there, it wasn't a software problem after all. I tried re-installing tiger, got the same you must restart the computer error message. So I tried putting the original software back on the machine, panther. Once again it gave the same error. So I remembered reading somewhere that the airport extreme card could occasionally cause the kernel panic if it became loose. So I tried removing the card and the system starts up perfectly. This also explains why the computer starts up in safe mode and gave the restart error when i tried booting it normally. Thus I reinstalled tiger for 3rd time, which work fine. I re-inserted airport card, and thank god.. no more errors. The only thing i don't understand about the whole deal is that my mom didn't drop the computer or expose it to heavy vibrations, this would explain how the card could become disconnected. In Apple's own hardware test, the airport extreme card was found to be functioning correctly. Odd, if you ask me..
Thanks anyway Matt for your help,
    Sebastiaan

  • MacBook Pro freezes during start up and safe boot

MacBook Pro freezes during start up and will not start in safe boot in recovery, it goes back to apple screen with spinning gear

    Stinkster,
does your MacBook Pro have a removable battery? If so, then it originally came with grey installation DVDs. If it doesn’t have a removable battery, look on the bottom of your MacBook Pro for its serial number (it’s etched there in tiny print). If its serial number has eleven characters, write down the last three of them; if it has twelve, write down the last four. Include the three or four characters in your reply; they can determine which model MacBook Pro you have, and the model will determine whether it originally came with grey installation DVDs or not.
If your MacBook Pro did originally come with grey installation DVDs, then you’re going to need to find them (or buy a replacement pair from Apple or iFixit) to reïnstall Mac OS X on your current hard drive, or to install it on a replacement hard drive.

  • E mac only starts up in safe boot

Having accidently pressed a few keys on the keyboard while not paying much attention to what was happening to my computer it just switched itself off!!! (I think it was the F15 button that was pressed!) Now it only starts in safe mode and I can't get many of the applications to work, internet connection to name one. How can i get it to start in normal mode again?
Can anyone shed some light on what I've stupidly done and how can I solve it please?
    Thanking you in anticipation
    e mac   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

    wim,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Do you mean the Mac always starts up in Safe Mode, without you pressing the shift key? You could try starting with the keyboard disconnected to see if it starts normally. If that's the case, check that the shift keys on your keyboard aren't stuck. You can jiggle the keys, or carefully pry them up and check for anything gumming the key post contact (keyboard keys pry off coming straight up and are replaced pressing straight down; on long keys such as the spacebar, shift keys, and Enter key, there's a wire spring that needs to be folded into the clips underneath).

  • Satellite P100-347: Blue screen appears on start up - unable to boot volume

Recently I left my 2 younger brothers playing NFS Carbon on my satellite P100-347, preinstalled with media centre 2005 edition, and now it fails to startup.
During the startup process eventually a blue screen is displayed for about a second and then it shutsdown (I manged to make out the words "unable to boot volume" from the blue screen).
I tried booting with an XP media centre DVD but it only gives me an option of reinstalling the OS with a price of losing all my very important data. Normally I would have recovered the system but I don't want to lose my data.
Is there anything i can do other than taking it to a technician?

    Hi
Well, mostly the BSOD appears due to a hardware problem or serious software issue.
In your case the software problem is possible
Unfortunately, I think the new OS installation is the best way to get the notebook running correctly.
Now you want to know how to save the data and files well, I think you should remove the HDD from notebook and should try to connect the 2.5 HDD via external USB controller to another computer. Then you could save the files on the other HDD
I think, now you know that the regular backups are important and necessary!!!!

  • HT201262 Why is my MacBook Pro starting up in SAFE BOOT?

I am not trying to do this. It has happened twice in the last few days. I don't know why.

Run this command in Terminal in Utilties.
    sudo nvram boot-args=""
Hit return and give your admin password when prompted. It won't appear in any form when you type it in. Then hit return again.

  • MBP running Mac OSX Leopard 10.5.8 cannot get past login screen even in safe boot

Help!  I have a Macbook Pro purchased in 2009, running Mac OSX Leopard 10.5.8 which froze while running Adobe Illustrator.  On reboot, it won't allow me to go past the login screen.  I tried starting up from the disc, running disk verification and repair and repairing disk permissions, and trying to start up in safe boot, all to no avail.  When the login screen comes up it gives the name of my hard drive with a (2) after it, which seems strange.  Any suggestions short of reinstalling the system software?  I don't want to lose my applications/data!

My MBP takes drastically longer to boot when i turn it on as opposed to when I just got it. My web pages take a long time to load. Can anyone help me? WHat can I do to speed up my MBP. I am a novice mac user. Again my mac is getting slower by the day and i dont know how to increase its overall performance. Is there any simple software that can boost overall performance or will I have to reformat my MBP? I have a 200gb HD with 50 gb free and 4 gb of ram.
    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Launch the Activity Monitor utility. Pull down the list near the top and set it to "All Processes". Click on the "CPU" column heading to put the highest CPU consumers at the top. Also click on the "CPU" tab in the lower part of the window to check the value for "% Idle". If that value is much above zero, check the other categories for signs of resource problems. If nothing there points to a possible problem, launch the Console utility and look for messages that might suggest a problem. If you see messages that you have trouble interpreting, post them here and someone should be able to help.

  • EMac Freezes in Normal Start Up - OK under Safe Boot 10.3.9 or 10.4.11

In helping a charter school get its eMacs back running, one of these eMacs [(ATI Graphics w/32Mb VRAM), 1.25GHz G4, 37GB HD, 1Gb RAM, and whose SN = G8429CDSQJ8] is displaying very unusual symptoms. It simply has to be software or a very weird RAM or VRAM memory issue, but I am mystified as to whose since I found no Firmware Updates at Apple or ATI. Here is the gory story.
I had replaced its battery and added a 1Gb DIMM (About This Mac and System Profiler show this is OK). I repaired the HD from a “Gray Restore DVD that was shipped with these eMacs” (got a “No Repairs Needed” from this) and its Permissions from the DVD set of 10.3.x system SW, and initially did an "archive and restore" installation. This had worked fine for all the other 10 eMacs as had going up to 2 Gb RAM.
On re-start the eMac froze and refused to eject Restore DVD. I hooked up a Firewire Cable to the ailing machine and ejected the Restore DVD after starting the ailing eMac in Target Mode. After this, I started up in Safe Boot and updated the 10.3.x Restored SW to 10.3.9 using Software Update ... things seemed fine. So, I started up in normal mode, opened System Preferences to Accounts to make sure the Student account was under agreed restrictions. As soon as the Authentication panel opened, the eMac froze, needing a Power Button shutdown … it kept doing this, and it behaved itself under Safe Boot after each freeze. I installed YASU (from a CD in Safe Boot and have used for years on my home PMMD, dual 1Ghz G4, 10.4.11), which I understand is simply a group of Unix scripts under a nice GUI and had it do all the system and web browser tasks (i.e. crons, permissions, prebinding, swap filesetc) but saved the logs and their archives.
We were upgrading all the eMacs System SW to Os 10.4.11 (starting from a 10.4.3 "Black X" commercial system disk … so from a Safe Boot, I loaded the 10.4.3 DVD, started up from it, and did an Erase and Install, so all the SW on the drive is Apple’s own. PRAM was reset and amazingly, on this re-start, this eMac froze a few seconds after a App’s window opened. From a new Safe Boot, Software Update took me to 10.4.11 (I refused to allow Safari, iTunes and Quick Time update until it had also updated all the other security and Java (9 Javas of these in numerical order from SUD).
Under Safe Boot, I found I can open as many as 10 Apps or Utilities, flip between the windows … nothing wrong. After some thought, I used Activity Monitor, Disk Utility (to perform “Erase Free Space, 7X” and with Screen Saver’s Flurry at maximum in the Choice window, and this places the processor use at almost 100% (~70-75% user + ~20% system) … but this does not test much of the memory (couldn’t figure out how to do this). I kept things going for over 7 hours while randomly using Safari or Text Edit. But as soon as a Normal Restart is done and a second window opens (even Activity Monitor’s little floater), it freezes again.
The Web is full of symptoms that usually blame memory, but it seems hard to believe that the 1Gb DIMM would “know” when the system is booted Normal vs Safe. So, tonight, I am going to run Rember (v. o.2b) that I dragged off my PMMD … an have used it under 10.4.11 over the years.
BTW, contents of Trash after two (2) hard freezes are always the same system files [annex_aux, annex.db, filetoken.db, fonts.db, and qdfams.db]. The mention of “fonts.db” seems to suggest a font problem, but why … all are fresh 10.4.3 stuff.
It’s my understanding that Safe Boot allows ONLY Apple extensions and Apps to load and this is why it seems to me that the problem must be SW … somehow, somewhere.
Is there a utility that can list third party components? Does this make sense? In looking into the Preferences and Application Support there are Adobe, Macromedia prefs, fonts … which I assume came in w/ Safari since I have not added any 3rd party programs other than YASU, who tells you truthfully where its stuff is loaded
When back at the school, I plan to swap out 1Gb RAM DIMMs and/or replace the old 256Mb DIMM that was original. Also, plan to go back to the Restore Software DVDs (10.3.4 since these have more Apps that are needed): Erase (Zero Out Deleted Files) and Install to rebuild a “virgin” set of 10.3 after restarting. Then Check to see if Safe Boot is stable BEFORE trying to update to 10.4.11 (via 10.4.3 Black X).
However, if this does not make sense, I would be grateful for readers pointing out my errors and/or flawed plans.

Hi Cosmic (and, per my Southern US heritage, hope yawl are doin fine down under),
Firstly, thank you hugely for guiding me through this eMac puzzle. Your insight that under Safe Boot the ATI video extensions are turned off now has the symptoms I see matching a cause.
Last evening, I did an Erase (Zero out the HD, 1 pass) and a virgin , custom install from the eMac Media DVD that came with the machine; this took the system to Os 10.3.6, and it seemed to let me open more windows than two(2) for several passes, but it still froze, these times leaving no recovered files as a trail.
I decided to use only Apple’s Software Update, under Safe Boot, to sequentially load only system or Java UDs and not let Safari or any iApp stuff bring in foreign SW components(tis strategy caused by finding, last evening, strange troubles with the Font book not validating any font and it displaying most of these incorrectly. This font finding kept me thinking SW had to be the problem instead of heeding your and Alan Jones experience …
All well and good, and when I got to 10.3.9 with all the Java and Security Uds, I could open as many as 4 Apps, but the killer was always testing the “Flurry” screen saver … lots of video here. Yet in Safe Boot, I could open all the Apps in the folder and randomly switch between them with no issues.
Lot of driving chores today kept me from seeing your second reply till late this afternoon, but as I drove I remembered that on my now ancient Power Mac Mirror Door, 2x1Ghz, one of my partitions had 10.3.9 loaded with free Unix scientific SW and Xbench 1.1.3 and Cinebench 2003, both of which test video cards, etc. So, I loaded and made DVDs of these testing apps after running them on the PMMD in the 10.3 partition as well as my normal 10.4.11 main drive. Got them over on the eMac, checked to make sure its fonts were OK, ran the tests under Safe Boot, then saw immediate freezes under Normal Boots, and finally, logged into the Apple site and read your reasoning. Bingo!
I again checked the caps I could see and they matched your ID of them, still, even with a machinists mirror could not see the ones further in … called the school marm and told her we should consider this eM as nearly dead, use its internal organs (HD, RAM, ATA drive) and externals (Keyboards, cables) in our organ donor program. She’s agreed, so it’s a done deal.
So, tomorrow I’ll satisfy my curiosity and do the surgery to remove the innards and see if there is evidence of the caps … sure there will be. BTW, I made my living, till a good severance package induced early retirement , as a PhD level Materials Scientist/Elec Engineer (mostly in chip level packaging and several forays into flat panel electronic displays (LCDs and OLEDS(Orgainc Light Emitting Diodes)). As I looked at the circuit board, these electrolytics seem to be surface mounted, an unusual design even for its day, and I cannot imagine any “shade tree” electrician having much success trying to replace them.
Again, a thank you for your insight. I’ll just have to owe you a beer since I’m doubtful you would get one I’d drop along the seashore. Take good care … and without checking a map, I hope Brisbane is not being flooded.
    drsax
PS I forgot to mark your and Allan Jones earlier replies as Helpful which they were ... just did so. Sorry for the oversight. Owe you both a beer for sharing your experience.

Looking in to Mac support I found article http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570 and followed instructions to perform a safe boot:
    "Perform a Safe Boot
Simply performing the Safe Boot may resolve this issue.
Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
Start your Mac, then immediately hold the Shift key. This performs a Safe Boot. Advanced tip: If you want to
see the status of a Safe Boot as it progresses, you can hold Shift-Command-V during start up (instead of just Shift).
Note: A Safe Boot takes longer than a typical start up because it includes a disk check and other operations.
The following is the script that appears on the screen upon safe boot. and halt after the last line.
