MBP Backup Options

My Time Capsule just died on me.  So before I go drop another $500 for another one, I just wanted to check here to ask if there were any other options as far as similar storage devices for backing up my MBP.  I am wondering if I can buy a Network Storage device to do the same thing as the time machine.  Any advice would be apprecieated.

Did the entire Time Capsule die, or just the HD?
If only the HD, you can connect a USB drive to the TC and back up to it instead.  That's a bit slower than backing-up to the internal HD, but not much.  And it has the advantage that you can connect the drive directly to your Mac if necessary for certain operations.  You can even do the first backup via USB, but it takes a bit of finagling.  See the blue box in #Q2 of Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.
It's always prudent to keep "secondary" backups, especially when your main ones are on a network.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #27 for details and some suggestions.
You may also want to review Time Machine vs. Clones and Archives for an overview of the different types of backup apps, the advantages and disadvantages of each, and some recommendations.
EDIT:  I'd strongly advise against a NAS, unless you're technically-proficient (if you are, I'd still advise against it, just not as strongly).  See the pink box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #2 for an explanation.

My question is about the 'Restore Backup' option on iTunes (Not 'Restore iPhone'). So, if I click on Back Up Now, then 'Restore Backup', would that go through the process of erasing everything on my phone as new then restore whatever iTunes has backed up?
I do not want this to happen, as with previous experience iTunes doesn't restore a mirror of what the iPhone was when it was backed up as is the case with iCloud backups.
What I am trying to do is, as I've found a method on Youtube, there is an application where I can delete all the multimedia saved in my 'iMessages' so clear up some space. As doing that manually through the phone would take a lifetime. The method is to backup on iTunes, then using the backup created, importing that into the application then deleting the messages through that then restoring the phone using that amended backup.
So back to my question, would restoring through 'Restore Backup' just restore the backup internally or would it flush the entire phone and then restore the backup? And if it does so, what would be lost in the restore?
    Thank you all,
    Fahmid

iCloud should overwrite your phone with the data stored in your account, preserving your newer data.  However, to be sure I would go to Settings>iCloud and turn data syncing to Off before restoring the backup.  Then, after restoring the backup, turn the data syncing back to on, and when prompted about Merging with iCloud, choose Don't Merge.  This will ensure that the data in your iCloud account overwrites the data on your phone (which is your goal).
Also, you don't sync text messages with iCloud so you will end up losing your more recent messages when they are overwritten by the backup.

  • How do I get iCloud Backup Options to display the list of apps on my iPad?  It just spins forever.

I'm trying to set up iCloud backups for my iPad.  I go into Manage Storage, selet my iPad from my list of iCloud enabled devices and then I get the Backup Info screen.  Its supposed to list all of my applications so I can turn on/off backups on an app by app basis.  Unfortunately it just spins forever and the Backup Options list never populates.
This works fine in my iPhone 4s, but not on my iPad.
I don't want to run a backup without doing this since I have a lot of data in a couple of apps and I don't want those backed up.
Is this an iOS bug on the iPad?

Eventually the Settings app just crashes while waiting for the Backup Options list to populate.
When I try an actual backup of my iPad to iCloud it spins for a while and then crashes.
I only want to backup up a handful of my apps to iCloud but right now I can't even get it to show me the list of apps to turn on/off.

  • Backup size says 2.0 GB, but I have all backup options turned off. Why is my backup size still 2.0 GB?

I had an iPhone 4 updated to the iOS 7.1.2 version, and I recently purchased an iPhone 5s. When I got the 5s, I transferred all of my camera roll pictures from my 4 to my PC in a file folder and deleted all the photos from my 4 camera roll. I also turned off the "camera roll" backup option in my iCloud storage settings. However, my backup size still said I had a large backup size, so I turned off all the apps in the backup options under the iCloud storage tab. Along with all the apps, I turned off the backup for the Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, etc. Yet, my backup size on my 4 still said 2.0 GB, and my 5s needs more backup storage without purchasing any extra storage.
I'm not sure if I should completely delete my 4 backup or if there is a solution without completely deleting its backup. If there is a possible solution to decrease my backup size without deleting the backup, what is that solution? If deleting the 4 backup is the best option, what are the "risks" of deleting the backup? Like would I lose anything I restored onto my 5s from the 4 backup, etc.?

    Hi girdster,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like you need to manage your iCloud storage. I would recommend that you read this article, This tells you how to manage and how to delete a backup.

  • Please throw me a life-line: Problem with HP Recovery Manager's File backup option

    Product: Pavilion g7-1070us notebook
    Operating system: Window 7 64-bit
Problematic system: HP Recovery Manager (triggered by hitting F11), made by "Cyberlink"?
    Error message:
The notebook crashed a few times before but I was able to restart it. Then it completely failed and simply displayed a blue-screen with blinking cursor (no error message). Hitting F8 failed to trigger the safe-mode. So I was forced to get into HP Recovery manager by F11. Before the system restore, I had to backup my personal files through the File backup option.
After scanning the computer for my slected file-types and finalizing the list of files to be backed up, it showed an error "No device is available for file backup. Make sure your removable disk is connected" while entering the third step ("Where do you want to save the backup").  This happened even though I have both blank DVD in the DVD drive and USB stick in the USB drive. And the size of the file I was trying to back up is way below 1Gb, a fraction of the storage capacity of the DVD.
I ran the Diagnostic test in BIOS and passed both the "Primary Hard Disk self test" and the Memory test.
    Brief description of the issue:
I have a Pavilion g7-1070us laptop that failed to start and simply displays a blue-screen with a blinking cursor (no error message). I could NOT get into safe-mode by hitting F8, but was able to activate the “HP recovery manager” by hitting F11.
I was trying to back-up my files before triggering the system restore/Factory reset. It asked me what types of files to back-up, then scanned the computer for these files and was finalizing the files for back-up.
These first two steps went smoothly, but at the thrid step whne it asked me "Where do you want to save the backup?",
suddenly an error message showed up saying e "No device is available for file backup. Make sure your removable disckdrive is connected". But I have both a DVD sitting in the optical drive and a USB drive attached!
Can someone throw me a life-line here? If I cannot recover my files, I cannot proceed with the system restore and I am forever stuck here!! Thanks a lot!

    You're very welcome.
If the hard drive and memory passed tests, then it is probably something else, but I can't say for sure.
If you can read the files using the kaspersky rescue disk then the disk is definitely fine and the recovery program is probably corrupt.  If you cannot, then the disk may be wrecked.
I do not believe the recovery disks provide any opportunity for you to back up files.
Once you run the recovery disks, they wipe everything out, and rebuild the software image that came on your PC.

  • I need a backup system, but do not need another wireless system. Does Time Capsule offer just a backup option?

When I looked up Time Capsule on line, I found it provides backup and wireless connection. I don't want another wireless set up, just backup. Can I get just backup option with Time Capsule or do I have to seek an outside external backup device?

Does the OP mean he doesn't need a "wireless" system or does he mean that he doesn't need an additional connection to the Internet?  The latter is my situation.  I'm just wondering -- if I'm perfectly happy with my current routers --will it be easy to add a TC to my current setup?   Would the TC get Ethernet-plugged into the router, or can it stand by itself (closer to where we have the printer)?

  • Ios8 backup option

    Hello,
I updated my phone to IOS 8.0.2, beforeif I want to start manual backup go setting > icloud > backup now .
but now I didn't find this option ?

    Hi Kimo_angel09,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
You can still find the "Back Up Now" option in the iCloud settings, but the location of that option has changed slightly in iOS 8.
Tap Settings > iCloud > Backup. If you're using iOS 7 or earlier, tap Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup.
    From:
Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
You may have to scroll down a bit to find the Backup option in Settings > iCloud.
    Best Regards,

  • Time Machine doesn't list Time Capsule as backup option

I'm trying to restart Time Machine, but Time Machine doesn't show Time Capsule as a backup option even though I'm connected to it wirelessly on our network. I was successfully backing up to my Time Capsule until I changed its name. Any ideas on how to fix this.
    Thanks

Sounds like the drive is dead.
Take it to your local Apple Store or Authorized Repair location.

    HELLO ALL !!!

I noticed the same thing. I found that if you cutomize the toolbar you can add a button to email this page and it only sends a link.
I also found this in Safari Help
Email a webpage with OS X Mountain Lion
Open Safari if it is not already open.Open Safari
Click the Share button, and then choose “Email this Page” from the pop-up menu.
You can choose what to send from a pop-up menu in the New Message window that opens in Mail: Web Page, PDF, or Link Only. You can also choose to send a Reader version of the page if Safari detects an article on the page, even if you’re not viewing the Reader article. For instructions, see this help topic:
Send a webpage shared from Safari
You can also email a webpage by choosing File > Share > ”Email this Page,” or you can email a link to the webpage by pressing Shift while choosing File > Share > ”Email Link to this Page.”

  • IPhone 2.0.2 iTunes 8 No Backup Option At All

I have my phone on 2.0.2 and was preparing to update to 2.1 and I synced to backup my phone so I could keep my stuff after I update but the backup never occured during the sync. This didn't bother me because its happened before. So I went to the icon in the iTunes sidebar with my phone and I right-clicked to select backup manually. Now the backup option is completely gone from iTunes 8 on my PC. I am scared to update now because I want to keep my stuff. What can I do to backup now?

Anyone? Please I really need 2.1 but if it means losing all my stuff I'll stick with 2.0.2 until my phone craps out if I have to.
