MBP battery drains in sleep when charger has no power

At home I regularly plug my MBP's charger into an outlet that's on a light switch. When I'm done working for the night, I put the laptop to sleep and then turn off the light. Usually (since I'll be leaving first thing in the a.m. and the charger cord is kind of in the way) I unplug the charger and stow it, but every now and then I just leave the laptop plugged in and turn off the light.
I've discovered that when I do this--leave the fully-charged, sleeping laptop attached to an adaptor that is not getting power--the battery drains until the point that the laptop goes into hibernation. So when it wakes up, less than 10% charge is left.
In all other respects I have no problem with the battery and resting overnight (unplugged) it only loses a percent or two of its charge.
Is this a bad adaptor, possibly?

I'm not sure how that helps me figure out the problem. I suppose I'm still having problems expressing myself clearly.
You have expressed yourself very clearly. I got it from reading your original post.
The only thing I can come up with is somehow the charger or the Macbook is bleeding power back through the charger into the electrical lines.
There should not be any voltage at the AC prongs of the charger when it is connect to the MBP. The flow of current should only be one way. You can check this with good multi meter.

  • MBP won't sleep when charging

My 15" i5 MacBook Pro won't sleep when charging; a reset of the SMC solves the problem temporarily, but it always recurs. Interestingly, the sleep indicator light pulses as if the machine is sleeping, but I can clearly hear hard drive activity; the drive sounds like it keeps spinning up every 10 seconds or so. This is not an issue when trying to sleep when running on the battery only. Any advice?

I would just buy a wall charger for the touch and leave your MBP alone. If you really only wanted to charge it from the MBP, just make sure it doesn't sleep when plugged into the power adapter.

  • Battery drains while sleeping after RAM upgrade

Installed 16 GB of RAM and a Hybrid/SSD 1 TB internal HD on MacBook Pro 15" mid 2012 and now the battery drains while the computer is in sleep mode, about 1-3 % per hour. Before the RAM upgrade (stock 4 GB of RAM) there was no noticeable battery drain, so I assume it has to do with the upgrade. I read that it takes more power to maintain 16 GB of RAM during sleep, so my questions are as follows:
    Is 1-3% per hour normal?
Will resetting the SMC help the issue?
Does the Hybrid HD have anything to do with this?
I am not too happy about the battery drain as it happens that I don't use my laptop for some time and prior to the upgrade the loss of battery charge was not an issue at all. Is this the price I have to pay for maxing out my RAM or is there a way (resets, settings, etc) to reduce the amount of battery loss
    Thanks for your input.

Hi everybody. I have the same question. I have a macbook unibody late 2008. I have recently upgraded the OS to Yosemite. In order to have a smoother functioning of the system I have immediately replaced my original 2Gb (1+1) RAM with 8 Gb (4+4). Since then, I have noticed a dramatic reduction of my battery charge during sleep mode. Now after 8 hours of sleep it goes from 100% to around 65% (before it was 95%). Is it a natural consequence of having installed a larger RAM or there could be anything wrong with my settings?
I have read a couple of articles about standby mode and standbydelay setting but this does not apply to my model of macbook.

  • Ios 7 battery drain - using faster than charging now

Anyone else have issues getting a full charge on iPhone 4S after updating to ios 7.0?
It's draining noticable faster - battery drains faster than it charges now so that unless you turn off the screen you end up with less charge than when you docked it. Same goes for regular 30 pin cable to 1Amp wall charger without the dock.
I left mine over night on the iPhone dock and it still only reached 92%
Never had issues on ios 6.
Even with the screen dimmed back to 50% (like I had it set for ios 6),
Battery was at 45% before updated yesterday and even though it was docked and charging during update was at 36% after the update, and kept dropping the longer I had it connected.
Does anyone know for sure if ios 7 is using the A5 cpu differently? maybe running it faster or using more power than on ios 6?
Rebooted my iPhone 4S a few times after updating, nosame issue. Was able to use Safari but unable to download from itunes or app store. They asked or my password, but it said "could not connect to app store, please try again". perhaps due to so many users updating yesterday
Then after opening a few apps (ebay, amazon) battery meter jumped to 100%
I do have DND enabled for notice center. update retained that preference and my screen lock code.
I noticed that even though screen lock timeout was set for 2 mins, it was prompting for code immediately. Had to change to 5 mins, since the 2 minute to lock option has been removed in ios 7.
    Thanks,
    JJ

  • Battery Cycles not increasing when charging

    Hey,
I just noticed something on my MBP (2013, 15'' retina) and wasn't too sure about why this happens:
I use the MBP as my main computer, which mains when I'm at home I always plug it in. This also means that, for example on weekends, it's plugged in for multiple days in a row. Now I noticed this: When my battery is 100% and I keep the MBP plugged it, the cycle count never increases. As far as I know, my old MB (air) didn't behave that way. With my old MB, when the battery reached 100%, it would discharge to about 95% then start charging again, slowly increasing my cycle count. The new MBP always shows 100% battery and the current power usage - read out via the IOKit API apple provides - shows 0 mAh.
Does anyone know if the new MBP is actually "bypassing" the battery when plugged in and at 100%? Or is the cycle count basically wrong?

The battery counts a cycles when it has counted a certain threshold of charge.  This means that if you discharge the battery part of the way down then charge the cycle count will not increase until a later charge.
    Said another way...
the cycle count increases when the battery accumulates a certain amount of charge.  Let's say that threshold is 1000mA-Hr.  If you discharge the battery 500mA-Hr, then connect the charger the gas gauge IC will end up counting 500 mA-Hr.  You will have to charge another 500 mA-Hr before it counts.
The net effect of this is that your cycle count will stay low IF you run on the charger most of the time becuase there will be little discharge.
Finally... Apple buys the gas gauge IC from companies like Texas Instruments (TI).  Apple does not define this behavior.

  • Why does my macbook pro "goes to sleep" when charging?

Why does my macbook pro "goes to sleep" when charging? It is working fine without charging but once I attach the charger to my laptop, it just blacks out or goes to sleep mode and I can't wake it up unless I unpluck the charger.
I read from threads that it is a logic board problem....How do I solve this problem?

Try an SMC reset. Follow the method for "a battery you should not remove yourself."

What causes the iPhone 4S to shut down to a black screen when it has full power? I have cleared the open icons and it works for one day then shuts down again.

Software hiccup, glitch or maybe faulty battery. Restore iPhone with iTunes on computer. See if this helps. If still problem that you think is serious enough to fix, all iPhone 4S have full Warranty. Make Genius Reservation and take iPhone to Apple for resolution.

  • TS2634 1st gen iPad has suddenly quit showing that it's charging.  I found that if it's shut it down and plugged in for 12+ hours, it will charge, but when in use, the battery drains quickly.  When connected to the Mac, it doesn't link with iTunes.

Is this a problem that can be easily fixed?  I'm guessing it's a problem with the charger connector, possibly??

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Battery drains during sleep!

My almost 2 year old battery for my 15" PB G4 keeps losing its' charge when sleeping. After fully charging, I put it to sleep by closing the lid (and confirming the flashing LED).
A few hours later when on the train, it won't wake up, until I get home and plug it in, only to realize that the battery had drained.
    Here's my coconut:
    Current battery charge 1168
    Max battery charge 3089
    Current battery cap 3089 (70%)
    Original battery cap 4400
    cycles 191
    age 22 mo
Any suggestions? Do I need a new battery?
    Thanks.
    PB 1.67 15 Superdrive   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I realize this is an older thread, but I was searching around the forum on this topic because I've been finding that one of my PowerBook batteries has been draining quickly during sleep (on planes, not trains!). I thought you might find my situation similar and informative.
On a more recent thread, I found a couple of suggestions that have led me to believe that my "problem battery" is just plain old. I've looked at the battery info in the System Profiler (under Hardware > Power), and confirmed that fully charged, my battery's capacity is a meager 877 mAh (19% of the original 4400) and it's been through 169 cycles. It's a battery I bought with the PowerBook, so it's over two years old.
Considering the massive drop in capacity, I think it's time for a new battery...

  • 8520 : Battery draining in sleep mode/turned off

    Hi Guys,
    Happy new year!
I am now confused with what happened to my Blackberry device. Here is the problem. I charge the blackberrry battery up to 50%, then I unplug the charger then I turn it off. When I sleep, the battery drains so fast, I don't know what's happening, then my battery completely low, so I can't turn on the device.
Here I attach you 2 screenshots, hopefully it will helps you to understand.
    Thank you.

Did the battery drain previously? Have you installed any new applications? Try removing your battery and reinserting it after 30 minutes, or backup the stuff you need and completely wiping your phone. As a last resort you might have to buy a new battery, unless its a problem with the phone.

  • TS3274 iPad charges, but drains while using when charging

I try to use my iPad while charging, but when I turn the screen on, charging stops, though it says it is charging.  It will drain and shut off.  I am using the charger that came with the iPad, and it is plugged in the wall.  Thoughts?

It's a third generation WiFi only, 64GB iPad, the same one that I have.
It seems like it recharges normally, if it totally charges up overnight and the 2-3 days of use seems about right as well, if you are not charging every night when you are done using it - and if you are using it for at least a few hours every day.
It almost seems like there is an app or a setting that causes the battery to drain while it's being used and recharging.
Can you use it normally and get 8-10 hours out of the battery if you don't charge it while using it? Does it seem to drain normally that way?
Have you tried closing all of the apps on the iPad and reset it to get a sort of a fresh start approach? If not, give it a try. I don't know which iOS you are running on the iPad, so this should cover all iOS that you would be running.
In order to close apps in iOS 5 or iOS 6, first tap the home button once. Then tap the home button twice and the recents tray will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus (-) sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button twice.
Closing apps in iOS 7 works like this. Drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Battery drained and will not charge

the battery on my droid ultra completely drained last night and I plugged it in to the wall charger this morning and it is not responding. Has anyone let their battery drain all the way ans had issues getting it to charge? It has been plugged in for about 30 minutes and the screen is black and the device will  not turn on.
    thanks!

ddvh, let's bring life back to that device. I recommend that you allow it to charge for approximately 15 more minutes until the battery charging icon populates on your screen. If the device still does not power on, you will need to press/hold the power and volume up button to reboot your device. Keep us posted. We're here to further assist you if needed.

  • Ipod Nano 2G battery drains suddenly after completly charge , software 1.3.

I bought Ipod Nano 2G and have this problem: after Charge 4 hours, then, when I use it , Ipod suddenly restart and the battery drains near to 98% of capacity, or when I power off the nano after use it, next morning or severals hours later, the battery is completly drain, and Ipod doesn't response. he Just response until I connect to USB port of my Computer or ITrip, and show the "extremely battery low... message".
I use my ipod only in my car with my iTrip car, but some times y use it for some Long travels in plane, its works ok, but some days ago ( near to sept. /8 ) start with this failures.
It's may be related with the new software version 1.3.1 ? Itunes install it some days ago in my Ipod and start with this problems.
some one have the same problem?

Well , after all the software test to see the battery behavior, my ipod still drains all battery power, even if the ipod are in off mode. but if I play songs after full charge it plays over 8 hours (IS NOT THE BATTERY THE PROBLEM) . but some times the Ipod reboot randomly and start with 2% of baterry charge after that.
I test using 1.0, 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3.1 software. and the same problem.
    therefore: IS NOT THE SOFTWARE.
So I decide send MY Ipod nano to the technical support office in my country/city using my APPLE warranty, now I just wait for the answer from the technichian.

  • MB Battery drain during sleep

I have a MacBook IntelDuo (not 2) that I just purchased in October.
I noticed that the battery still drains during sleep. If I put the computer to sleep for 4 hours, it drops by about 15% - 20%.
I had a iBook (white g3 500mhz) and I could put it to sleep for days without the battery barely draining at all.... espeically in OS9 (over a week unplugged and asleep and had 25% battery left). Once I switched to OSX the battery drained a bit faster.
Drain is expected, but this seems like a much bigger drain than older systems. What could still be running when it's asleep?

When you put it to sleep, do you notice a steady white light? If so, then only your display is sleeping.
You can change sleep settings in System Preferences > Energy Saver.
Your battery will drain if only your display is sleeping. Your computer is still on if you see the light.
