MBP - beyond freezing - just dead after 3 months

Just wanted to let everyone know that my 2010 MBP died after 3 months.
Was programming Friday nght as usual and then Saturday afternoon the power button did nothing and the mag connector led was very dim.
The Apple store states that it is the logic board and will be 3 days to replace.
Is this the norm? Is it just the new model? The i7?
I made the switch entirely from PC to Mac and now have programming data that I need for client meetings in Mac format and cannot access. Very frustrating.
I have had Dell and HP laptops that ran without issue until retirement
and then are still running as hand me downs (about 5 years old).
I like the OS X interface and enjoy programming on the platform but as a consultant I need something reliable.
Has anyone else had a similar experience?
May be related to the graphics switching. I use the gfxStatus program and usually keep the nvidia on at all times. Recently got a Dell 3008wfp and decided to re-enbale automatic switching and the system died about a week later with NO indication of any problems - good shutdown and then would never power up again...

I think that what you have discovered is the reason why there is such a thing as a warranty. Hardware fails

  • MBP as good as dead after upgrade to 5.8?

    Hi All,
A strange problem with my MBP after trying to upgrade to 5.8. It never restarted after a seemingly normal installation script. Only things happening are the sleeping led comming on, a short sounding noise from the fan, the cd-drive clicking and the sleeping led going off.
I tried every bit of troubleshooting I could find which gave me one little spark of hope: after holding down the power button for a second or ten the sleeping light shows a read-out: a two second burst of on-off's followed by a short pause followed by going on for one second.
Is there anyone out there who got a clue what the diagnosis of this might be?
I'm certain it will end up in my local Apple Store but knowing the guys over there it would be better if I try to be at least one step ahead...
    Thanks in advance!!
    grts, Michel

    Update:
As feared, gone to a Apple Center, back to phone with Apple Care, forth to Apple Center again, Apple being slightly apathic to my complaints how a 1.5 year old computer bearing a logo that is supposed to show a high degree of quality and on to a Service Center where they suspect a failing logic board... all parties agree this is not what to expect from a machine with this price tag, noon action what so ever.
For now the MBP is on the test bench - i hope it's the graphic card.
I did get a replacement macbook for the time being. It's not all bad, just extreme improvising.

  • Satellite L670 - Hard Disk Dead after 8 months only

    Hi,
this morning I had to retunr my laptop due to bad hard disk problem. After 8 months, it's dead already.
The positive points are: I am still under warranty and second the toshiba software hilighted me on time, allowing me to back up my data before the crash. Tks Toshiba for this tool, very usefull.
The question is, how can a hard disk die that quick after just fews months ?
Bad luck or bad use ? I am wondering.
I wish to have a feedback from those who owns same model, L670 (windows 7), to understand if this problem is commun or if I was unluckily concerned.
Also, if there are possible solutions to avoid HD stress in the daily use ? Like for example, reduce writing on it (back up of blu-ray using AnyDvD HD ON hd, then cut&paste to external HD), or to not connect too often external hard disk to avoid electricity surcharge if any ?
In future, will I have to perform chkdsk more often ? Defrag ? If yes, at which frequency ?
This is my 3rd laptop dying, Sony VAIO = mothercard dead after 1.2 years, Fujitsu Amilo xi = explosed after 3 years, and now Toshiba HD after 8 months.
From 900EUR up to 1600EUR, I do not see a significative resistance of one of those models, Sony was the badest ever in terms of video card longevity and compatibility (games unplayable after 2 months, no driver update), keyboard "painting" was a mess with deterioration after fews months compared to Fujitsu and Toshiba (no pb). Toshiba L670 more recent, was the best in terms of game compatibility.
What to do ? Stop buying laptop or use it only fews hours a day with a PC on top ?
For time beeing I can't afford to have a PC + a laptop as I am unemployed, surviving with 10EUR/day,
time to find a job again.
Despite this situation, I managed to buy new Zelman notebook cooler for my Toshiba at around 40/50EUR, but, it didn't help apparently.
Tks for feedback about L670 duration life, and particulary HD problem + best use to protect it.
    Guillaume

    You're not the only one.
I bought an L670 in September last year. It was strictly for home use as replacement for a desktop PC, so it was never moved.
Just after a few weeks things started to go wrong: boot fails, programs crashing, Windows 7 crashing...
It's almost 7 months now since purchase and I'm writing this message on the very same notebook with 'Hard Disk Sentinel' running in the background, reporting more bad sectors every day. It tells me that hard disk health is now down to only 9% and that it has an estimated 14 days to live.
Since the notebook is technically still running fine, I don't think I can have the HDD replaced under warranty or am I wrong? Does the HDD have to cease working alltogether before I can have it replaced under warranty?

  • Y500 motherboard dead after only 18 months

My $1000 laptop is dead after just 18 months. The motherboard is unrepairable and my hard drive has stopped working. It has been having issues starting for at least six months but now it is dead for good. I'm pissed because Lenovo won't work wih me to repair it. They want almost $600 for a new motherboard and hard drive. That's without them actually touching the laptop. For that price I can just buy a new laptop. You can be sure it won't be a Lenovo. Apparently, they are ok with people paying a premium for their products that last less than half te lifespan of their competitors. I am so angry right now.

  • MBP freezes at startup after several crashes

I have an older MBP, I think it's a 2008 running Snow Leopard.  I am backed up. Computer screen started glitching while watching videos online and would freeze (screen would glitch strangely, I could move the mouse but nothing on the screen was responsive).  I'd have to manually power down and at first it would restart if I'd insert the installation disk and boot into startup manager and select hard drive.  But after a few more crashes it will not boot at all.  I've removed the hard drive and used another MBP to repair disk, hard drive appears to be fine but the computer still wont boot.  I don't believe it is a hard drive problem.  In fact I'm having the same startup issues with 2 hard drives (both with the same version of snow leopard) installed internally.  What happens at startup is the apple logo appears, spinning wheel appears but it stops spinning and it doesn't seem to go any further. This happens when I try to boot from install disk or boot into startup manager or into disk utility and even when trying to startup in Apple Hardware Test.  Spinning wheel stops then nothing.
I have tried resetting nvpram.  I have been able to boot into verbose mode but it appears to freeze up again after a short amount of time.  I tried booting into safe mode and the progress bar showed quickly then spinning wheel stops again.  My original plan was to do a fresh install of the OS and do a time machine backup but the comp won't start in any mode.
Does anybody have any ideas what I could do to fix this problem?

It unfortunately sounds like it could be what's called an "intermittent generic fault."  I use a product called Scannerz (http://scsc-online.com/Scannerz.html) and in some of their documentation they describe this type of fault. Scannerz can actually test and detect this type of problem if it's in the development process, but the system needs to at least be bootable, and it doesn't sound like your's is. I think it's described in their downloadable document about hard drive testing.
An "intermittent generic fault" is essentially a crack or separation in a logic board trace or connection, or intermittent connection in a cable, or even the connection itself. If it's in the logic board, such as in a cracked trace or a marginal solder connection that went bad, it may get worse with more CPU activity because it causes the heat in the unit to go up, cracks in traces or solder joints expand, and a disconnect occurs. This might explain your video glitch. According to them, if this is the problem, it typically gets worse over time until the system becomes unusable. If it's in an I/O cable it can be easily fixed by replacing the I/O cable, but if it's in the logic board, it basically means you need a new logic board. Intermittent connections with something plugged into the logic board may also cause this type of erratic behavior. Sometimes just re-seating connectors can do the job. I've personally seen this type of problem happen when Airport cards on the old PPC based Aluminum PowerBooks worked their way loose - reseat them and the problem goes away.
Another thing you could also try is the PM reset. It might work because I've seen it mess up booting, but that wouldn't explain the erratic lock-ups you got with the video. Some of the MacBook Pro's have a diagnostics connector connected to them and Apple can apparently connect diagnostic equipment to the unit to diagnose a whole host of problems, but I don't know if your system has this feature because it's relatively new.
I hope this helps you in some way, and good luck.

  • My MBP Still freezes after deleting SU 2006-003

    Hi Guys,
Like many others I did the SU 2006-003 on Friday, and found my MBP freezing up on start-up, after deleting the Version Cue CS2 from the start-up items I still got the freezing effect, so I called Apple and they said that my MBP had an option to reinstall the 10.4.5 (my DVD version) without loosing my user preferences, so I did that. And all my problems where solved, and then I did a software update of all the updates except the SU 2006-003, to my surprise the MBP still freezes. So I came to the conclusion that both SU 2006-003 and QT 7.1 came out on the same day, but everyone thought that SU 2006-003 was the problem. When all along was the QT 7.1 causing the problem, both QT 7.1 and Adobe Suite apps run in the background at start-up, apparently they contradict each other now, so I tried reinstalling Adobe Suite CS2, and I can't even think about installing Version Cue, cause that freezes the MBP right away, during the installation!!!.
So after doing a save mode and deleting Version Cue (again), I go back to my normal system (witch now is 10.4.6) and try to run the rest of the Adobe Suite apps, to my surprise all work well except the Adobe Acrobat, the main app for PDF's, once I double click that App the MBP freezes up. So now I'm tempted again to reinstall the 10.4.5 and not do the QT 7.1 update as well.
Can anyone give me a better solution? This one takes to much time and a great deal of concentration, cause not all of my apps work well after this, so I have to reinstall them again, mainly Parallels, Missing sync, Documentstogo, Backupbuddy, and others. It's a real pain.

No, I don't use the Adobe suite. I do have the Adobe Reader, Photoshop Elements 4.0, and Acrobat 6.x installed. They all run without a problem as does Microsoft Office 2004 X.
Please be careful about installing or moving anything from an old system onto the Intel Mac unless you know it's a universal binary and compatible. Default Folder 2.0.x is not compatible. Get Default Folder 3.0 (just released.)
    Here's some more related info:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers. These versions are not universal binaries and will not work on Intel-Macs. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the only current choice is USB Overdrive. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior (does not work), TechTool Pro (does not work), SuperDuper (newest release works), and Drive Genius (untested) may not work properly on Intel-Macs. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

  • Left USB-Port dead after wake from sleep. Just restart helps.

I hoped Apples keyboard-Update today would solve my biggest hate-bug in this buggy POS called Leopard. It didn't.
As usual on my Leopard-Macbook Pro, no device will work on the left USB-Port after I waked the computer from sleep. Just a restart helps. I hoped this update to solve this, because it replaced among others "IOUSBFamily.kext".
Terminal gives a timeout error for the internal USB-Hub after wake from sleep. I assumed this should be related.
    I'm really angry now.
When will Apple solve the most urgent problems in Leopard?
Was 10.5.1 just smoke and mirrors to make (fool people into...) people upgrade who intended to wait until the first maintenance-update?
Was Leopard Apples attempt to make Windows-Users more comfortable by putting in some heavy extra-bugs and blue screens?
FIX IT FINALLY! And f... don't wait for Macworld to release 10.5.2. It's desperately needed and the current state of Leopard will leave some people very sad at christmas after getting their first Mac. First impression counts and many more peoples first contact with the Mac will be at christmas...

Apple knows the problem and for some reason they are stumped on fixing it. this is so bad I can't believe it. On my macbook pro with Leopard installed, USB left port is dead after sleep. Only restarting can power it back up. I have to restart every day to use my external hard drive for time machine or when putting my flash drive in the port.
Come on already Apple. This is a SERIOUS, SERIOUS problem.
    Fix it.

i can,t access wifi via airport after left my mbp idle for just 1 minute, i need to turn airport off & turn airport on if i left my mbp idle for just 1 minute or less...why this thing happen? anyone can help thanks in advance

Something that came to mind after rereading you post relates to the particulars of a "hard" reset on the Snow.
A “hard” reset removes current setting from the base station. You must then connect to the base station using the AirPort Admin Utility and upload AirPort 2.0 or later software to return the base station to its default settings. A base station in a hard reset is only accessible through the LAN port, not via wireless connections ... so attempting to access with the AAU, via a wireless client, will not work.
The following is the process to reload the AirPort software: AirPort Base Station (Dual Ethernet) : How to reload software from Mac OS X

Make sure you don't have any iTunes addon installed (many of them are visualisers that may do other things like display lyrics and so forth). They can remain even if your reinstall itunes.
go to the iTunes folder and backup your itunes library xml and itl files to another location then delete them and try starting iTunes then.
That might help figuring out the problem

    Hi Glenrose,
That would be between the you and the carrier that you have the contract with. In the past, I was able to purchase only one month of service from AT&T. Not sure what carrier you have or what contract you have, but you would have to cancel it with them.

Reset the SMC and then test: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Otherwise as the other folks indicated, its time for diagnostics / service. Make an appointment with a Mac Genius at an Apple store, contact AppleCare via phone, or contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider for assistance.

I have had my G4 Powerbook just over a month and whenever I charge the battery to a full charge, it usually says that its got 95% life, but is only last approx 19 minutes.
I did calibrate the battery, so should I just get in touch with Apple and get them to send me a new battery as I am covered under the Apple Care.
At first I thought it was running down quickly due to using large programs such as Final Cut Pro and Photoshop, but I have the same problem when just typing in Word.
    Comments will be much appreciated!
    cheers, phil

I have had my Apple Powerbook G4 for almost 2 months. This morning it went from fully charged to shutdown in 1 minute and 26 seconds. The System Profiler showed the battery as being at full capacity at only 60mAh.
With the recharge cycle count at a mere 13, I guess that there must be a common fault in these batteries.
