MBP boot issues, GPU very hot, crashes soon after turning it on
Hi!
I just got a call from my Dad about his MacBook Pro (older Core Duo model, not Core 2 Duo). That's why I couldn't yet check the problem out first-hand and the information is a little vague - sorry about that. It's running the newest version of Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and is generally up to date.
The issue: He turned the MBP on after being away and not using it for one week. He said it didn't boot properly and crashed a few times before even starting up. And the fan was very loud. He managed to boot into the User Interface once, and he said that the average system temperature in the status bar (Temperature Monitor from Bresink software) didn't show the usual ~60°C but was higher, and when he clicked on it to see the details, the temperature of the GPU was way up, around 90°C. CPU temperatures were rather normal, on the other hand.
He could hear a fan spinning, but I guess it's still possible that just the GPU fan died?
Or is there only one fan in the whole system and the problem must be somewhere else?
What could he do to find out more about where the problem lies?
Thanks a lot!
If necessary, I will drive the few hours and go check on his MBP personally, so if needed you can also post some advanced steps that a typical dad couldn't perform.
Thanks!
I called him and told him the steps to do the SMC reset, and apparently that seemed to do the trick.
The MBP is now running normally and with cool temperatures again! (so far)
I asked him some more details about how it behaved earlier: Apparently, the computer completely shut itself down after a short while. The temperatures it displayed for the GPU ranged from 96°C to 104°C!
Funny how that one chip can screw up the whole system. But I wonder what causes those SMC screwups?
I remembered now, that I had to do the SMC reset a few times already in the past years on his MBP. None of the previous screwups were as severe as this one (so that the computer wouldn't run at all anymore). But they have been quite numerous, considering other MBPs of friends never had to do an SMC reset once.
What could be wrong with that particular MBP and SMC chip?
Anyway, thanks again!

[SOLVED] Skype crashing soon after login
Hi Everyone,
I'm using OSS.
I installed skype-oss and successfully managed to use it yesterday.
I tried to revert back to ALSA this morning, but as I wasn't able to get it working, I decided to stick to OSS.
Skype just crashes soon after I login. I've tried what was suggested here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sk … mmediately , but it hasn't helped.

Is there anything I can do to get Skype working again?

Try fresh Skype configuration directory:
mv ~/.Skype ~/.Skype_bcc
To revert back to ALSA you need to uninstall OSS and remove the blacklisted modules, and then restart or

INDD CS 3 crashes soon after, or at (5.03) startup
Hello, I have read through the "InDesign CS3 crashes upon launch" thread and will continue to search through the forums and the KB, but I am desperate and hoping for some help quick.
After working fine last time I used it (a couple of weeks ago), now, soon after starting up and making a couple of changes in a document, InDesign CS3 hangs (Not Responding) then gets a strange-looking window with a thumbnail graphic of (looks like) an Explorer window (?) - no words, then the Windows Error message that INDD has stopped working, Windows is checking for a solution to the problem, A problem has caused INDD to stop working, Close program. Same thing with several different document or if I start a new document.
The difference since using it last time may be that I tried to clear some disk space in order to install Vista SP1, and I could have deleted some necessary files I suppose. However, uninstalling and reinstalling INDD has not helped. (Installing SP1 was ultimately unsuccessful, and I have given up on that.)
I will also try system restore (hoping there is a restore point to go back to) but since I am desperate and short on time, I am putting out the cry for help now since you all have been so helpful in the past and of course it is the weekend and of course I must do this job this weekend and cannot wait for Tech Support on Monday. Thank you all in advance.
System is Windows Vista Ultimate with Intel integrated graphics and 1 gb RAM.
Things I tried so far:
1. uninstalled, restarted then reinstalled Indesign
2. changed default printer to PDF (then XPS)
3. deleted SING folder
4. renamed Indesign Defaults to Indesign Defalts.old
5. deleted recovery data when prompted
6. installed 5.0.3 update.
Actually after 5.03 things have changed. Now the program doesn't even start up (crashes at intializing plugins splash screen).
TheanoKen,
I'm not familiar with DIX, but it sounds like a good product. I use Acronis True Image 11 ($49.99 at www.acronis.com and you can download a 30 day trial) along with two different backup drives, an internal 200 gb that gets the images from my 100gb system partition once a week (OS and programs don't change often), and an external 500 gb Maxtor ($99.99 at Tiger direct http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3617656&sku=M1 22-7816 )which gets a nightly image from my data drive.
Acronis supports both internal and external hard drives and opticals (and floppies, but...)and allows full, incremental, or differential backups on any schedule you choose, as well as individual file backup and restore and drive cloning. All of these things can be done from the installed program, or from a bootable CD, and the interface is identical whether running under Windows or from the CD, which allows you to view the contents of any drive on the system before you make a move, unlike the old version of Ghost I used.
It has a "try and decide" function, if you have the space, which clones your system into a virtual partition and track the changes while you do an installation or such, and if you decide you don't like what's going on you simply abandon it and no change to the system is made. There's also a "recovery manager" feature you can enable that allows you to run the application at boot, as if you'd used the CD, but it keeps my system from starting at all (see below) and is pretty redundant if you have the CD.
The only issue I've had is it uses a Linux OS on the startup disk (I think), and because I have 8 IDE channels set up it shuffles drive letters on my system when using that interface. In spite of what both the BIOS and windows think, it always shows my boot drive as D: and something on the add-in primary channel as C:, but once I figured it out things have gone smoothly. Having the startup manager installed was doing the same thing at boot, and there was no OS on the drive that was being called C:, so no boot to Windows. Although they didn't solve it for me, the folks at tech support were pretty helpful.

Mail crash soon after launch solution
I have been having this problem for days and have been pulling my hair out ever since. Mail.app simply crash seconds after launch. I tried every suggestions on the forum, even created a new account to rule out account setting and mail box problem. I have experienced this problem since my last major OS update, so I figured probably something to do with corrupted system files.
I also noticed dotmacsync crashes at every startup, so I thought it might be something to do with sync services. To confirm this, I launch iSync, and it crashes immediately.
I disabled all seem related frameworks one by one to see which affect all 3 services, mail.app, iSync.app and dotmac. After some digging through, I found SyncServices.framework. Restored it from backup, and all good now.
Hope this would help someone in the same boat.Check out the thread at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6139445. Solutions posted there worked for me (deleting To Dos in iCal; note that you can still use To Dos after performing this fix).

Computer crashes shortly after turning on
After turning on my compute, there is the white apple screen. At this point a bar at the bottom starts to load (as if I installed new software). As the bar loads the computer shuts off. Any tips?
ThanksHI,
Boot from your install disc. Run Disk Utility to see if the startup disk needs repairs.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
If you cannot boot from your install disc, try booting in Safe Mode

Mac Mini shutting off soon after turning power on
Hi,
My Mac Mini was working fine last night, then when I tried to turn it on this morning, the fan was making a lot more noise than it usually does, and the LED light was flashing bright every second or so. The Mini booted up into the login screen, then suddenly turned off as I tried to sign in. I have restarted the PMU, and tried to run the install disk but the computer shuts off on me before it has a chance to load it. It seems that if I put the computer to sleep at the login screen, I am able to log in and see my desktop before the Mini shuts down again.
Can anybody help me?It sounds like your logic board may need to be replaced if the PMU reset doesn't work. Some component is probably overheating or changing value causing it to shut down.

MbP Boot issues since last firmware upgrade
We have about 15 MacBook Pro's at work here that have been running fine. I have about in my lab area that I do testing on. Were working on getting them managed better, but at this time it's still the users job to run updates. Last week I ran apple software update on my two local MbP and things seemed ok. This week I went to re-image them to test a new image I created and troubles began. It looked like it installed the image ok but when it went to boot - just gray Apple logo. So going by standard procedure I got the gray DVD that came with it and attempted to boot up. It gave me these beeps and the light in front came on three times. I tried our white SL DVD - same thing. So I tried to boot up the second MbP from both gray and white DVD's - same issue.
So I did further testing and it seems that while our current image doesn't work, our Lion test image did. I found this odd but figured it must have been something with the last upgrade. But since all the DVD's we have don't work we didn't really know what to do. Thankfully we got our shipment of new MbP's that came with a 10.6.7 DVD. We were able to boot up and re-image the machines ok.
So in the future, how would we know an upgrade is coming that would make our old boot DVD useless? Thankfully there wasn't any emergencies I had to handle that I was able to work on this. But this was quite and odd event even for Apple.
Anyone else have these issues?Hello mate,

2010 MBP Core i7 Running very hot, short battery life..
So my 2010 MBP has been running hot for the last couple of months.. all the time.. every time I pick it up its hot.. Even under very light load (IE: only safari, and mail open..)
At about the same time, my battery life is very short.. using only the integrated gfx card (I have an app that shows me what is in use) I only get 2-2.5 hours of run time.. My estimated time never climbs up any more. Using cocoanut battery I am showing 96% capacity over all..
The sad part is I just let my applecare lapse, and this has been doing it since before it lapsed.
Any ideas? I checked the fans and vents, they are working and are clear..Model Information:

IMovie crashes soon after loading
I'm new here, and I'm kinda new with iMovie. I've been working on a 7 minute project with some friends, doing some voiceovers and adding in audio tracks. As we added in audio tracks it seemed to be getting a bit slower and less responsive, but it was manageable. After adding the most recent track in, it crashed. Now it crashes every time I open iMovie and click on said project.
I've looked around the forum and the closest issues I've found are crashes upon loading, although they seem to crash before they can even select a project, whereas mine works fine except on the specific project. I've tried a couple things...repaired my permissions, deleted the pList file for iMovie, and reinstalled iMovie, and I'm getting the same issue. Is there anything I can do to fix this? I appreciate any help, the sooner the better!
Thanks,

MacBook Pro Runs VERY HOT while sleeping after Mavericks update.
My MacBook Pro (2009 model) runs super hot while it's sleeping after upgrading to Mavericks. Additionally the fans run at a very high speed. This issue was not present before the upgrade.
I'm concerned that there is a bug that's going to shorten the life of my machine as it will lieterally run all night like this.
Has anyone else experienced this, and is there a solution?Others have reported an issue with their systems after upgrading to Mavericks that might be related in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5497235
No fix is posted yet, but you might want to check to see if you have the kernel_task process using 100% CPU after coming out of sleep, and if plugging/unplugging headphones stops that task from using so much CPU.
It shouldn't be the new Power Nap feature in Mavericks, as your system appears to be too old to support it, but you should check your settings to see if it's enabled: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5394 -
Ground Textures blank in Fallout 3, Crashes soon after
As soon as I leave the Vault in Fallout 3 and step into the Wasteland, most of the ground is blank. As if this wasn't bad enough, it starts to put a strain on my computer, and eventually crashes my computer. I'm dual-booting Windows XP Home Edition on a Macbook Pro, 2.16ghz core 2 duo processor, ATI Radeon X1600 w/ 128mb VRAM and 1gb RAM. I meet the minimums for the game, but I can't tell what the problem is. It runs perfectly fine until that point. I've reinstalled the game twice already, but the problem persists.
EDIT: I'm running on minimum settings, as a safety measure.
Message was edited by: applefreak93Run a virus scan to make sure nothing is interfering with your game. If this comes up clean, I would suggest checking the game's manufacturer's site for a patch, ATI's site for a patch, and ensure that all applicable Windows Updates are installed.

PSE Organizer 12 crashes soon after opening
When I open Organizer directly from the desktopn, it asks if I want to back up my catalog. I decline. A few seconds later 'Elements 12 organizer has stopped working'.
I recently upgraded my installation from PSE 11 to PSE 12. I run Windows 8 on an i3 Gen2. My catalog has ~ 30K photos stretching back 12 years. The catalog also contains video. I was having a similar issue with 11. I created a new catalog, thinking that the catalog file may have become corrupted. That solved the problem for a couple of weeks, but the issue has now returned. I want to like this product as it's easy to use, but the constant crashes have to go!
What can I do to help solve this issue?Hi,

Aurora 7.0a2 crashes soon after opening
My Aurora won't stay loaded today. It stays open for a few seconds, enough to start to read the page, which is an error page in response to the previous crash(es) of today, but then within about 10 seconds or less that crashes, too. I was able to open it in Safe Mode by holding down Option as I opened it, and it stays open that way. Any suggestions, or should I fall back to the latest beta? Or go forward to the newest version 8.0a1, although I can't find a download for that yet. I found it by the process of disabling my add-ons and plug-ins. First I disabled them one-by-one. Still crashed. Then I told Safe Mode to 'permanently' disable them. It stayed up. Then I began enabling them one-by-one. It stayed up, UNTIL I enabled the Ghostery extension, then it crashed again. -
IPhoto crashes soon after launch
My iPhoto crashes a few seconds after launch. I have followed all the iPhoto repair options. I have tried iPhoto Library Manager but get an error when trying to do a re-build (I have contacted their support to see what the problem with that is)
Any help much appreciated.
Thanks
