MbP Boot issues since last firmware upgrade

We have about 15 MacBook Pro's at work here that have been running fine. I have about in my lab area that I do testing on.  Were working on getting them managed better, but at this time it's still the users job to run updates.  Last week I ran apple software update on my two local MbP and things seemed ok.  This week I went to re-image them to test a new image I created and troubles began.  It looked like it installed the image ok but when it went to boot - just gray Apple logo.  So going by standard procedure I got the gray DVD that came with it and attempted to boot up.  It gave me these beeps and the light in front came on three times.  I tried our white SL DVD - same thing.  So I tried to boot up the second MbP from both gray and white DVD's - same issue.
So I did further testing and it seems that while our current image doesn't work, our Lion test image did. I found this odd but figured it must have been something with the last upgrade.  But since all the DVD's we have don't work we didn't really know what to do.  Thankfully we got our shipment of new MbP's that came with a 10.6.7 DVD.  We were able to boot up and re-image the machines ok.
So in the future, how would we know an upgrade is coming that would make our old boot DVD useless?  Thankfully there wasn't any emergencies I had to handle that I was able to work on this.  But this was quite and odd event even for Apple.
Anyone else have these issues?

  • Has anyone else experienced persistent "iPhoto unexpectedly quit" since last weeks upgrade to Lion 10.7.3?

I am getting persistent "iPhoto unexpectedly quit" since last weeks upgrade to Lion 10.7.3?
It is usually preceded by a warning that the library is corrupted and needs to be repaired. I can still see the supposedly bad photos in Aperture without problems. I believe there is a serios bug in iPhoto.
One other clue here is that I attempted to download a new slideshow to my MobileMe Gallery immediately after the upgrade but even though it is still a valid Share option it did not work. After that with a brief exception I got the unexpected quits referrred to above.

Have you previously marked Commodo's certificates as untrusted?  The following discussion

talked about a similar problem and I just enabled Commodo's root certificate in Keychain Access and now mobileme is working for me again with Aperture.

Apple is experiencing Bluetooth compatibilty issue since they have upgraded their Bluetooth from 2.1 to 4.0. Is this the case with Ipad 4  I have a logictech keyboard and the ipad cant dicover it.  Please advise

I wouldn't delete the firewall configuration as described above as you would lose all your rules that you have in place for your firewall. I do however think it could be a firewall rule issue. You could temporarily disable the firewall on the mac System Preferences > Security > Firewall to prove this without deleting all your rules by deleting that file. If this works then have a look at the rules you have in place and maybe make an exception to this set of rules.
The 169..*. address you have is known as a APIPA address and is normally the address that you will receive when the DHCP client fails to find a DHCP server so this could be either sending or receiving data to the device that is blocked. DHCP needs to DORA (Discover, Offer, Receive and then Accept), which is a two way communication.
    Kind Regards

I do not understand any of the troubleshoot info ..fyi.

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

  • Touchpad and CD-Boot issues since 10.5.6

    Hello *,
since I updated to 10.5.6. I am having strange problems. I have to deactivate the touch pad, otherwise, when I use it, the left mouse button functionality *also of the USB or MightiMouse* is not working anymore. Second problem: no boot from CD via pressing and holding c or d anymore. I can hold option and select the boot device, but I can not run e.g. the hardware test tool from the original installation cd and I also can not reinstall firmware - cd will be ejected. The problem was even worser, but after all kinds of troubleshooting - this is the current status. I reset PRAM and SMC several times, I reinstalled 10.5.6 combo update 2 times. I reinstalled from Leopard CD, I installed from TimeMachine Backup. I assume that something is wrong with my firmware / EFI since the update but there is no possibility to fail back or reinstall, because I can not boot from cd with c or for firmware upgrade via holding down power button. I have no idea what else I could try. Any tips?

I checked already, and there is no cable problem. The prove for this is also that it works for a short time under certain conditions. Then it looks like touchpad starts to send endless left-clicks, which blocks other left-clicks. Disabling the touch pad let me use my mighty mouse, which is also bad, because I usually never use it with my MacBook. If you disable it in system preferences, using your keyboard (which is a pain when you are not used to it - also check if keyboard-mouse is enabled) - you should be able to use a external mouse device. I read somewhere that booting into hardware-test tool can solve the problem. Unfortunately I'm not able to try this, because boot with 'd' or 'c' does not work (fortunately booting with alt and choosing the boot device works, but this does not allow you to start hardware-test.) It would be good to know if there is another possibility to start hardware-test or even better - to flash EFI. Even this does not work (holding down powerbutton during start up with inserted EFI-CD) - the CD will be ejected without any effect. Very strange...
BTW: I searched the web about this issue too, and I saw many other people having similiar problem with all kind of Macs with booting from cd, or problem with left mouse - even in this forum. Does not look like a pure MacBook problem for me...

  • Browser freezes during page loading and then either shows the cause as silverlight, or flash to be the cause, on two different computers, since last 3 upgrades

Since the last three upgrades of Firefox the browser starts to load a web page then freezes. A pop up states that either silverlight or flash have stopped working. This can last for as long as two minutes before it continues to load, or for as little as five seconds.
I have tried various methods to cure this, by reinstalling silverlight, flash, and Firefox.
The only permanent cure is to revert back to an older version of Firefox. I would continue with an earlier version but I get sick and tired of popups from the likes of Yahoo, and yourself telling me to upgrade.
I have also put the the program back to basics, and this is a pain because when I find it's still the same I have to reload all the add ons. Maybe you could devise a method where we only need to click a button to put everything back as it was before resetting it to default.
This problem is occurring on two totally different computers, both running Intel gear, one i7 at 3.5, with 8 meg of ram, one core 2 duo with 4meg of ram, no drain from graphics cards as they all have their own ram.
i7 desktop Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, and Dell XPS Laptop core 2 duo Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit both latest windows 7 versions

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
    See "Creating a profile":
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox
Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox (you need to close and restart Firefox).
*Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

  • GS70 boot issue after BIOS 10C upgrade

Hello all, I have the GS 70 Stealth Pro (Crimson Red) with 970m 6GB. I recently upgraded to the newly released BIOS on the support page and have now run into an issue. Performance and operation of the laptop is fine, however when turning the laptop on, it'll turn on for a second then shut off. Pressing the power button again will boot the laptop with no issues. Since I cant seem to find the 10B bios which I didnt experience this issue with, is there a workaround or greater issue that would require a return?

  • Major phone issues since last update

My Droid Charge downloaded the last software update and ever since it started bugging out. I called Verizon and they sent me a replacement, which bugged out worse than the first one. I went to call Verizon but the phone was acting up so bad that it froze to the point where I would do a battery pull and it still didn't work. I had to walk to the Verizon store because my phone wouldn't make calls or text for over 7 hours. They ordered me a third phone which has the same problems. All new SIM cards every time and everything. These are just some of the issues I've been having across all three phones. PLEASE HELP!
    1) When entering text (text message, email, etc.), the T9 will give me suggestions, but there is no text being entered into the text box and I have to restart the phone for it to work again.
    2) The phone force closes applications that I haven't even opened. I will restart the phone or do a battery pull and as soon as I unlock the phone, I am greeted by at least two apps that have been force closed. (I put the phone in Safe Mode to see if it helps. It actually force closed applications more frequently)
    3) I will try to unlock the phone and the screen will lock up and will need a battery pull to fix it.
    4) If I stay in the same place and only wake the phone up from sleep mode without actually running any applications, the phone will go from 4G to 3G to not even being connected, all within about an hour.
    5) Since the update, I have had HUGE data usage spikes in my bill. I went from an average of 2 gigs a month to 9 gigs of data the month after the update and 7.5 the month after.
    6) I will go into my contacts to make a call and when I click on the number of the contact I would like to call, the phone is unresponsive and doesn't call.
    7) The phone will randomly log me out of my email accounts and I miss important emails for work. This only recently started happening.
    8) The phone alerts me of several missed calls without ever actually ringing. (I know I just didn't hear it because the phone is usually on the desk in front of me and I'll wake it up to check the time and next thing I know, I have 6 missed calls)
    9) If the phone actually does start ringing from an incoming phone call, when I go to answer the call, the phone freezes a lot and won't actually answer the call, but it continues ringing.

Since the posting, I received a third replacement for my phone. So far it is the best working phone out of all of them. It occasionally freezes up and I have to do a battery pull to get it stable again. I'm just quite unhappy because I didn't really even want the phone to begin with. Verizon called me and said they wanted to give me the early upgrade last year so I was like fine, but it has been a nightmare. Then I am approved for an early upgrade by two different managers from call centers and am told that they need to call me back to do the order, but I never get called back. When I call back, I get diverted and the new person on the phone ends up just wanting to send me a replacement Droid Charge. Then I finally get someone who will give me the upgrade, but then am surprised to find out that by upgrading, I will no longer be able to keep my current contract.
I have been a Verizon customer for one hell of a long time and have never had an issue until this past month, and am exhausted from having to make so many calls to Verizon. If nothing is resolved with my account by the end of my contract period, I am going to someone else.

  • Wireless network connection issues since last security update

    Hi All,
I've run into an annoying problem since I applied the last security update.
I've locked my wireless network a home down pretty tight. One of the settings I set is the "don't broadcast SSID" for that tiny bit more of security.
Since the last security update my MacBook doesn't connect to my wireless anymore. There are two ways I can get it to connect:
    1. Manually tell it to connect by resupplying the SSID and the WPA key info.
    2. Reconfig my wireless to show it's SSID, connect, tell wireless to hide it's SSID. I then lose connection but have a few seconds that the MacBook "knows" the wireless exists and I can select to connect to it from the wireless icon in my top menu bar.
Anyopne run into this issue and know a fix? Getting annoyed of having to do this every time I boot. Especially as I needed to change my WPA key into something I can remember instead of the 56char key I used to have
    thanx

Thanks Eric! Since changing this setting last night, all has been ok

  • Blackberry 10 OS issues since last update 10.3.1.1565

Ls, I have some problems with our Blackberry’s I have this since the last update of blackberry I have following issue’s:
    - Phones will not start while there are 100% and finalizing
    - Photos are lost
    - Contacts are lost
    - WIFI profiles are lost
What can we do about this issues?

Due to the number of problems with "upgrading" to this OS level, I suggest you try the very clean and very forceful AutoLoader OS Reload:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-10-OS-Device-Software/Upgrading-OS10-devices-using...
Beware that it is completely destructive...the device will be "like new"...no data, no apps, no accounts, etc. Be sure you take a full backup first, as well as make full manual documentation of all apps, accounts, configurations, etc. Sometimes a restore reintroduces the very corruption one is trying to eliminate, and manual reconfiguration is necessary.
You can also use this to fall back to a prior OS if you desire...you can install any OS level for which you can find an AutoLoader. (Hint...search over on the CB site!)
Good luck and let us know!

  • Mid 2006 iMac Boot Problem (Since latest firmware update)

I have a Mid 2006 17" iMac. Ever since the latest firmware update in early December, about every other startup I've been having boot problems. After the white screen with the Apple Logo and the spinning wheel it goes to a blue screen like normal, but instead of the 'Loading Mac OS X' white window popping up it stays blue and the spinning loading wheel starts. I've left it loading for quite a while before and nothing changes. I have to do a force shut off by holding the power button. and then I start it up and it will boot normally.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Actually, I think it'san early 2006.

  • MBP boot issues, GPU very hot, crashes soon after turning it on

    Hi!
I just got a call from my Dad about his MacBook Pro (older Core Duo model, not Core 2 Duo). That's why I couldn't yet check the problem out first-hand and the information is a little vague - sorry about that. It's running the newest version of Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and is generally up to date.
The issue: He turned the MBP on after being away and not using it for one week. He said it didn't boot properly and crashed a few times before even starting up. And the fan was very loud. He managed to boot into the User Interface once, and he said that the average system temperature in the status bar (Temperature Monitor from Bresink software) didn't show the usual ~60°C but was higher, and when he clicked on it to see the details, the temperature of the GPU was way up, around 90°C. CPU temperatures were rather normal, on the other hand.
He could hear a fan spinning, but I guess it's still possible that just the GPU fan died?
Or is there only one fan in the whole system and the problem must be somewhere else?
What could he do to find out more about where the problem lies?
    Thanks a lot!
If necessary, I will drive the few hours and go check on his MBP personally, so if needed you can also post some advanced steps that a typical dad couldn't perform.

    Thanks!
I called him and told him the steps to do the SMC reset, and apparently that seemed to do the trick.
The MBP is now running normally and with cool temperatures again! (so far)
I asked him some more details about how it behaved earlier: Apparently, the computer completely shut itself down after a short while. The temperatures it displayed for the GPU ranged from 96°C to 104°C!
Funny how that one chip can screw up the whole system. But I wonder what causes those SMC screwups?
I remembered now, that I had to do the SMC reset a few times already in the past years on his MBP. None of the previous screwups were as severe as this one (so that the computer wouldn't run at all anymore). But they have been quite numerous, considering other MBPs of friends never had to do an SMC reset once.
What could be wrong with that particular MBP and SMC chip?
    Anyway, thanks again!
