MBP Boots with 3 POST Tones - Only with CD in drive?

I think I am having an issue with my Optical Drive so it seems - just wanted to see if anyone else has some information on this.
My MBP 8,2 will boot to Lion successfully with no problem. I've been trying to downgrade back to Snow Leopard, after some kernel panics with the original SL disk I purchased for my old 4,1 - the Apple Support crew were puzzled and decided to send me a replacement copy of SL. (As I was trying to boot to disc, I would kernel panic with Lion installed and with NO operating system installed). I received my new SL replacement disk today, and I was overjoyed at the wonderful opportunity ahead of me to downgrade. Except...this time I was greeted with POST beeps. 3 beeps every few seconds. I see that is typically a RAM issue, so I called up Apple again and they once again were puzzled greatly by this problem. Awhile back, I created a backup drive with SL on it - plugged that in and tried to boot to disc, that also resulted in a kernel panic...which is making me think this is something greater than just the optical drive. I've made an appointment to take in my MBP to the Genius bar to see if there is something wrong with my Optical Drive. So basically one SL disc kernel panics, the other one POST beeps.
Now, here is another interesting question. I received this MBP 8,2 with NO install discs. Long story short, I only have the install discs from my 4,1. I received my 8,2 as a replacement from my 4,1 for free with a brand new warranty (had major failures with my 4,1 to bring them to replace the entire machine - buy the warranty folks!). I am looking for the MBP install discs that I used to have with my old 4,1 so I can run the Apple Hardware Test to see if perhaps on my own I can find something wrong - however I know the discs are usually MBP specific. If/when I find these discs - do you think I can use that AHT version for this new MBP? I found my sibling's 13 MBP install discs, but that would be a last resort attempt since it's for the 13 inch. I'm also assuming that my optical drive will co-operate enough for me to run it.
Anyone else in this kind of bizarre situation or has any recommendations for me? I realize I am going to the Genius Bar on Sunday - but I like to do a lot of my own testing and see what happens on my own. (Just because I've had a bad experience with one Genius Bar visit on my old 4,1).

Lucky for me I found (to where I thought I didn't receive them) the 15 inch MBP discs. I must have traded my old discs for the newer ones. And of course, I was able to get to the AHT and the Mac OS X 10.6 install screens. I think what happened is that I was putting in retail SL discs that were originally purchased for my laptop that was running Leopard in the first place. So I am guessing that my current MBP (pre-loaded) realized that those were not the proper discs, and that I should have been using the install discs (the grey ones) the entire time. Funny that none of the advisors over the phone recognized this either, even when they asked me what was pre-loaded on this machine and what type of disc I was using (I specifically explained I was using the disc I pre-ordered when Snow Leopard came out).
So I am now wondering, if the beeps with the retail version disc of SL were related. Because other than that, the machine boots flawlessly with the correct discs and without the discs, no POST beeps. I ran the quick AHT test, didn't indicate anything - but I will run the full one later.
I'm trying to think now if it is worth running into the store to have them look at the machine, because I think I localized the problem - putting incorrect discs into the machine and trying to get it to run. Might call them again tomorrow to see what they think (just because going to the Apple Store is really out of my way).

  • HP Pavilion P7-1141 Computer won't boot with 2nd SATA drive installed

I'm having a problem booting brand new computer when a second SATA hard drive ws installed into P7-1141
Took a working SATA drive from my other computer and installed it into this new computer.  But computer only hangs on startup screen after the animated logo draws...then sits there doing nothing..
    My configuration:
HD 1 (boot drive, original that came with computer) plugged into SATA1
HD2 (second SATA drive) plugged into SATA2
DVD drive (original) plugged into SATA3
Will boot if I unplug SATA cable, but won't if it's plugged in..
To make sure I didn't break anything, I put the SATA drive back into original computer with the same power cable and SATA cable and it works.  That is, it shows up as a second hard drive on my old computer.
    Any ideas?

    Product number is : QX351AA3ABA
    HP Pavilion
    Model # P7-1141
Ok.  I've done a little research and right or wrong, I'm following a suggestion to re-format the drive before I attach it.  Reason:  Someone posted that if you had a Windows XP or Vista formatted HD, that it will need to be re-formatted before being installed into a Windows 7 OS.  Maybe right, maybe wrong...but I'm going to try anyways.  Will keep posted.
Also, looked at my Event Log Errors and found this in the entry:
The device, \Device\Harddisk6\DR6, is not ready for access yet.
Not sure what this means yet..but working on it.  If anyone knows off-hand, i would like to solve this.
Anyways, I'm re-formatting the disk now and will try it again.  I have my doubts, because why wouldn't an NTFS formatted drive show up with any operating system?  Maybe there's an obvious answer, but that's why I'm here!
    Other comments:
I checked for latest SATA driver and must have it..at least according to this HP site since it only lists the 'original', so I assume it's there's only one released for this MB and that I must have the  latest and greatest.
There are many other posts on Windows 7 hanging on "Starting Windows'..and the above is what I pulled from them...haven't found 'the' solution posted yet....
    Thanks!

  • MacBook Pro won't boot with new hard drive, but a different MacBook Pro will

So here are the details. My friend and I both have 13-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pro's. Same processor and specs since they were purchased at the same time, but originally had 250 GB hard drives. His hard drive failed and needed a new one. Put a 500 GB Seagate Momentus 5400.6 in his computer, and tried using a flash drive with "Install OS X Mavericks" on it to install Mavericks on his new hard drive. No matter what, it wouldn't install. I finally was able to install OS X 10.9.4 on it by connecting the new hard drive to my computer with a USB hard drive enclosure. I put the hard drive back inside his computer and it wouldn't boot (stuck on the gray screen with apple logo and a spinning wheel). I then attached to the hard drive to his computer externally with the USB enclosure, and then it booted and worked perfectly.
So, it seemed like the problem was with something inside his computer, but then I switched our drives, and that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. I put my original hard drive into his computer, and his new hard drive into my computer, and they both booted and worked perfectly, so I have no idea why his computer will not boot with the new hard drive internally.
To summarize, his computer boots with: 1) new hard drive connected externally (won't work if it's internal), and 2) my hard drive internally
but my computer boots with: 1) new hard drive connected externally AND internally, and 2) my hard drive internally.
Both hard drives have OS X 10.9.4 installed
If anyone has any idea what's causing this and how to make his computer work with the new hard drive internally that would be greatly appreciated.

So after switching the internal SATA cables from each computer, now we have
His computer, with my SATA cable:
    1) Worked with every hard drive!
My computer, with his SATA cable:
    1) Works with 1 TB Toshiba hard drive
    2) Works with 500 GB Seagate hard drive
    3) Works with my original hard drive
    4) Flashing folder with question mark with his old hard drive
So it turns out you were right! Definitely had something to do with the SATA cables. But it's still strange that mine was able to boot with all the hard drives except the one that was originally in his. So it seems like it was some combination of his SATA cable and something else, since when his SATA cable was in his computer only 1 hard drive (my original) worked, and when it was in my computer, 3 hard drives worked. But at least its working, and I'm just gonna keep our SATA cables switched since that seems to work out fine

  • Why wont my macbook pro boot with external hard drives connected?

After two years of uninterrupted success running my MBP with five external hard drives attached (two USB, two eSATA with LaCie Expresscard 34, one FireWire 800), my MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion 10.8.2 installed will not boot with the drives attached. Starting up with the option key depressed does not work. Anyone have insight? This didn't happen until I upgraded to 10.8.2, so is there a bug fix needed in that update?

Update, I reset the PRAM (i think) and now the chime is back as I start up... small win but thats all it does.
So I decided to dload a copy of Lion and burn to a disc, then try and boot from there. When i boot holding option and select the dvd it sounds like something is happening, contstant turning or reading of the disk, but nothing is happening on screen, just my old friend the apple logo and his mate the spinning wheel. Starting to concede now, just hoping to get my data back, its mostly photos and some files i cant duplicate.
I am going to purchase Mountain lion on my current apple ID using a friends macbook and try and reinstall from there. Although i never had Mountain Lion installed in the first place (just lion) there isnt an option to buy lion on the app store (i dont think)  This is prob my last spin of the dice i think before handing it in, unless anyone on here has some ideas....

  • Will not boot with new hard drive

I used a SATA drive with adaptor as a boot drive in an MDD for most of the past year. I just got a MacPro 5,1 and wanted to use this SATA drive as a data drive in the new computer. I pulled it out of the MDD and put it in the MacPro. On start up I get the message You need to hold the power button or press restart. Since it has a boot volume I thought this might be a problem. I held down the Option key during start up to select a boot drive. Here it shows both the this drive and the OEM MacPro drive. Which ever I select I still get the error message. I can put this back in the MDD and get the same error even though it shows up as a boot volume when holding the Option Key. This drive does not seem to be totally dead since it can be seen during start up but it wont let the computer finish booting. It gets to the Apple logo but no farther. Can I salvage this drive? Data on it is unimportant.

You really need to use FW case; reformat the drive to use GPT partition table.
When booting the system's EFI polls all drives to look for valid system paths and to see which is blessed. A corrupt directory can even prevent booting from any drive or DVD.
I tell G5 owners to reformat as soon as possible once data is recovered, even though if they were running 10.5.8 their SATA drive may be okay.
Nuke the drive one way or another, I'd assume you have a spare FW case. And try booting from OS X DVD - you can install a fresh OS as backup/emergency system drive.
Any new SATA II or III drive are fine, WD Black are popular and 640 $69 or 1TB $89.
Have fun, I went from G4 MDD to Mac Pro over 4 yrs ago and it is still running strong -- and quiet!

  • MBP - Boot up, No POST, No Beeps

    Hi,
I have an issue with a MBP which will not boot.
I power on (with and without power adapter)
    Symptoms:
    No display
    No chime and therefore POST
    No keyboard(no caps light)
    A solid sleep indicator
    fans on
    HDD on
    cd drive spins
    closing lid does not sleep
power adapter shows charging, and battery leds showing it is receiving charge
Ive reset PRAM, SMC, re seated the ram, moved ram around in different slots and configs, tried known working ram from a working source.
Ive checked most connections visible from removing top case.
Can anyone suggest any further steps before I start to think it needs a new logic board.
there is a ASD cd stuck in drive as no trackpad functionality (I was working on a wifi issue before this happened) therefore i cannot perform firmware restoration.
    TIA
    Scott

In terms of the stuck CD, you can remove it from the drive by opening up the MacBook, removing the optical drive from the chassis then very carefully removing the top cover from the drive. If you're lucky enough to have access to the Apple service source PDF, everything on how to do this is documented. Be sure to handle the optical drive by the sides only (and avoid handling the top/bottom and front of the drive).

  • Dual Booting with second hard drive

Okay so I just ordered an enclosure to replace my optical drive with my old HDD. I have already put an SSD where the old HDD was and I could really use some more storage space for video projects. Also, I want to dual boot Ubuntu on this machine. I am wondering what the best way to go about that would be for performance. Should I make a scond partition on the SSD or use the HDD that I am putting in the optical drive bay for Ubuntu? And how can I use the extra HDD space to store data from both operating systems? Any help is greatly appreciated.

It seems that I have run into a problem. After doing a little more reading, it looks like mavericks will not allow me to dual boot. Also, a clarification to an earlier post I do NOT want to run virtual machine. Could I get around this problem by doing what you, LowLuster, suggested at first. Putting Ubuntu on the second drive by replacing the disk drive and installing that way, then putting bot drives into the machine? Also, the hard drive I am putting in place of the disk drive is 750Gb. I do not need 750Gb of space for Ubuntu. Is there a way to use the rest of that hard drive as storage for Mac OS?

  • Imac won't boot with new hard drive installed

So I installed a new 1Tb caviar black in my PPC G5 Imac, but when I turn the computer on, I get no video, no startup chime, nothing. The power light does come on, and fans start running after a minute or so, but thats it. I can't boot from the install disc.
The computer boots up as expected when I remove the drive(startup chime, grey screen, missing folder icon).
Any suggestions to what the problem is? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    -D

wierd i have similar problem. I removed HDD after crash to backup in an enclosure before reinstalling os again, put the hdd back and connected the hdd sensor backup (although i thought it was a knock sensor..doh!) . Mac wouldnt start, no screen, no chime, nada, but sleep light stays on. With PCs this usually mean CPU fault so i removed RAM to see if could get a BEEP meaning CPU is ok as it spots ram. No beep. So after checking everything i stripped out ram, hdd, airport and battery and reset PMU, tried again and now i get beep!! so cpu works. slowly adding everything back in and trying power up, last thing to go in was hdd sensor and sure enough when this is connected i reproduce the symptoms. So i disconnected the sensor and tried and i get chimes etc... Ive inspected the cable and made sure is connected right way up and still cant get to work. So it seems sensor is goosed! Debating wether to replace just yet

  • Mini boots with new cloned drive externally, but not internally.

    Hi.
I bought a new, bigger and faster HD for my early 2009 Mac mini (10.8.2) and cloned my original drive with Carbon Copy Cloner, making sure to include the hidden recovery partition. Using a USB to SATA adapter, I can boot from the new drive no problem. However, when I open up the mini and replace the old drive with the new one, all I get is the folder with question mark that blinks. I've tried holding down option when rebooting to get to the recovery partition, but all I get is the WiFi log in, no drives or any other options to choose from. If my Time Machine drive is connected, that does appear but fails to do anything if I click on it. (When the old drive is in, I can access the new drive just fine, and can even boot into the new drive's recovery mode.) Is there some step I'm missing, or some troubleshooting I can do that I'm not aware of?
    Thanks.

    RRFS wrote:
It sounds as though the connector for your drive didn't get seated properly.
If by that you mean it wasn't secure inside the computer, you could be right, but I pulled the drive in and out three separate times as I opened and closed the machine to exchange the old and new drives a few times and always tried to make sure it was nice and snug in there.
    Thanks for the response.

  • Boot with new hard drive

I just installed a new hard drive. I have a new 2012 MBP 13". How do I get the computer to boot up after installing the new HDD?

  • (Grub) Dual booting with XP on sdb

My goal is to be able to dual boot with two hard drives: Arch on sda and Windows XP on sdb.  With help in the #archlinux IRC I've managed to get Windows XP to boot by getting the menu.lst correct but when I click "Start Windows Normally", or "Start in Safe Mode", etc. etc. the computer just reboots. A cellphone picture of that all well known Windows black Screen: https://www.dropbox.com/s/nrczq86vsi6o9 … 6%20AM.jpg
    My fdisk -l and /boot/grub/menu.lst:
    http://pastebin.com/sLUUsCcU
To see if my xp hard drive was still intact I did this:
    sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /media && ls /media/
    and saw this:
    boot.ini NTDETECT.COM pagefile.sys System Volume Information
Documents and Settings ntldr Program Files WINDOWS
    nano /media/boot.ini
    [Boot Loader]
    Timeout=30
    Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [Operating Systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
I've consulted all the wiki's and forum posts I could find but at this point, I'm just stuck.  Somehow I think the final result is me reinstalling both OSs and starting again from scratch.
Any help or advice on getting a fully functional Windows XP on /dev/sdb would be greatly appreciated

    Pres,
Thanks for the post.  If I click "Last Known Configuration" the computer just reboots and I'm back where I started. Yeah, my Arch is working fine. My thought process behind re-installing Arch was that maybe the installation process would deal with the Grub config of /dev/sda and /dev/sdb automatically somehow and make everything OK...

  • 2nd HDD bay with HDD = notebook won't boot with HDD in 2nd HDD bay

I recently came into a Pavilion DV9308 Notebook. It was in decent shape, well looked new and since I like tinkering with laptops and the motherboard had the dreaded NVIDIA GPU failure going on, I sent the motherboard out to my motherboard dude and he put a newer NVIDIA video chip in, made some adjustments and modifications to the heatsink cooler etc. Along with my modifications including vent holes and sealing up the fan blowing assembly so when the fan turned on the hot air would leave the laptop it now runs Windows 7 64 bit with a 64GB Kingston OS SSHD and 4GB DDR2 800mhz ram. It runs like lightning and impresses people when they see it boot up in 15 seconds.
The problem is and the whole reason I picked this notebook to restore is because it has two acutal hard drive bays. Well ever since I've gotten the notebook It will not boot with a hard drive in both bays or a hard drive in Bay #2. I had to send the repaired motherboard back once because one of the ram slots wasn't working so this is happening on two different motherboards. I cannot find a reason why this is happening and have yet to find anyone that can help me with this. Can anyone explain to me what I'm doing wrong? I have all the correct drivers I think and the laptop runs at 130"F when pushed to the max! That is amazing compared to what it originally ran. It would be awesome if someone could please help me with this. Thanks.

Hello jason9922.  I understand your notebook won't boot with a hard drive in the second bay.
When you say that the notebook won't boot with a drive in the second bay what exactly do you mean?  Does the CAPS LOCK key flash or do you get an error?
When you have the hard drive installed can you access the BIOS?  If so, is the hard drive detected within the BIOS?
I'll keep an eye out for your response.  Have a great day!
Please click the white star under my name to give me Kudos as a way to say "Thanks!"
Click the "Accept as Solution" button if I resolve your issue.

    BDAqua,
    Thanks for the response.
Apple has used the term "Digital Audio" to identify this machine.  System Profiler has the following information:
    Machine Name:          Power Mac G4
      Machine Model:          PowerMac3,5
      CPU Type:          PowerPC G4  (2.1)
      Number Of CPUs:          1
      CPU Speed:          800 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU):          256 KB
      Memory:          768 MB
      Bus Speed:          133 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          4.3.3f2
      Serial Number:          XBxxxxxMK9
      Sales Order Number:
Yes, I could connect them by ethernet if all I wanted to do was transfer files, but I would like to network them so I could use wireless internet.  The machines are not always so close together, I did that to simplify the testing.  With the very slow transfer speeds I am reluctant to move ahead with the internet step.

  • 2008 mbp boots up with weird pattern on the screen

2008 mbp boots up with weird pattern on screen then says needs to restart but won't restart. Saw something about nvidia graphic card went bad and apple was replacing for free. Is that something apple is still doing and does that sound like my issue?

I know this is an old post, but people reading it may be interested by these two links:

I got this problem with my previous 2008 Macbook Pro, and it appeared just after the recall ended! Here in Canada, Apple is charging close to $500 to replace the motherboard (and the graphics card). Recently, I discovered a computer chop in Montréal where they told me they can replace the GPU for $200. I left them my computer and will get it back in a week or so. I hope it will fix the problem.

I have a MBP that powers up and won't boot. I swap HD with a friends drive (same system) and it still won't boot. Any ideas? Bus problem? Bad RAM? Should I sent to tech support, but I have don't have the service plan.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Can you boot from a disc? One thing to try is to hold down "D" while starting up and try to boot from Install Disc #1. This should get you to the Apple Hardware Test. Run the extended version of the test--it will check your hardware, including the RAM. If you have a hardware problem, like bad RAM, it will give you an error code. If you get an error code, please post back with it.
If you do not get any error codes, eject the disc. Then boot from it again, this time holding down "C" as you boot up. Navigate to Disk Utility, click on your hard drive by brand name, and go to the First Aid tab. Verify and repair if possible both permissions and the disk. This may take a while. Post back with how it went.
If you have access to an Apple Store, you could also make an appointment with the genius bar and take it there. This won't cost anything just to talk to the genius, and if you get a smart genius, he might be able to figure out what is wrong and what to do about it. If you decide to do this, go ahead and run the AHT first and bring along the discs that originally came with your machine.
    Good luck!
