MBP C2D 15": Screen Stays Asleep After Lid is Opened

Hi All,
So here's the deal... My new MPBP C2D 15" 2.33 screen stays black, off or broke (not working) when I open my lid after the computer is asleep sometimes. I know the machine is working despite the screen being off. Once I was listening to iTunes and pressed the space bar to stop the music and closed the lid because I was leaving. I came back a few hours later, opened the lid and the screen would not come on. I then pressed the space bar knowing that iTunes was the last app I used and the music began to play. Last night I was editing some video and saved the program and closed the lid for the night. Came back to edit video this morning and opened the lid and the screen was dark. Again pressed the space bar to play the video and the audio began to play.
This has happened a few other times and I am forced to hold down the power button until the machine powers off. Obviously the computer is working except for the screen. What now?
Peace,
Bryan

Generally you don't want to close the lid for the night. It won't necessarily harm the machine, but eventually it may create issues. Not everyone experiences them though. There are tasks which run in the middle of the night the machine needs to do, or you can force it to do with the freeware Macjanitor. Also if you have any peripherals connected to the machine when it goes to sleep, some may not understand the low power mode of the machine when it goes to sleep.
Be sure to backup your data first as my FAQ says:
http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
And once you are backed up, you can examine other possible issues which it may be running into.

  • HT201263 Iphone4 screen stays black after configuration

Iphone4 failed to respond during normal usage. Therefore I turned off the Iphone4 and restarted the device. Unfortunately the screen of the Iphone stayed black after seeing the apple logo.
As the above didn't resolve the issue, I restarted the Iphone by holding the home and power button. The apple logo appeared again and than the screen stayed black. Although the i-phone is making sounds and you can switch between normal and silend mode.
Than I rebooted the I-phone by using Itunes, and reinstalled a backup, also the screen stayed black after the backup. Although in the beginning you can see the adapter and I tunes logo on the Iphone screen.
Than I rebooted by using Itunes and set up as a new device. I can see the following screen:
After swiping the screens turns black although when I touch the screen I can hear the phone is still working.
How can I resolve this issue?

Call of Duty puts a heavy processing load on several internal components that may be causing them to overheat.  I would suggest that you download and install the Free and highly recommended "iStatPro" utility and post the temperature readings that it gives you, around the time that the time that the display goes blank, here in this Forum.  (Play the game for quite a while and then check your temps in iStatPro.)  That may give us the data we need to diagnose your problem.
You can download it for free here:

  • MBP C2D -- display not coming on after sleep, hd is spinning, hard reset re

    HI,
After using my new Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.33 for a few days, randomly after opening the lid while Macbook has been sleeping the display will not come on, no illumination whatsoever. The hard drive is spinning.
The only recourse I have found so far is to do a hard shutdown by holding the power button.
    any known solutions?
    MBP C2D 2.33 Mac OS X (10.4.8)

No, my laptop is treated like a desktop replacement, so it doesn't move. And no peripherals connected.
Hope Apple has corrected the logic board problem by now, though anything is possible as my Macbook is the first production run of the Core 2 Duo.
Will try booting from install disk and repair permissions. Hopefully this is it. (Migration Utility failed miserably when i tried to copy over my user files from my old Powerbook 800. While it said it was doing the copy of my documents etc., it failed to copy any of them across. Migration Assistant even said it was successful.)
    Thank you

  • One of my two screens stays off after coming from standby - OSx 10.10.2 MacMini

When 'reviving' my macmini after not using it for a while one of my screens stays black (The screen stays off so there is no contact from the mac). Even after logging in again the screen stays black.
I can get it to work again by disconnecting both screens and plugging them back in, but that is not a real solution of course. Also, after switching the position of the screens the other screen stays off, so the problem should be in the connection.
I've got a relatively new MacMini with OSx 10.10.2 and have the two screens (same size but not identical) attached via two 'mini displayport to DVI adapters'.
Does anyone have any idea what can cause this?

    Hi Snery,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I know you have already started some troubleshooting for this situation where your second monitor is not connecting when you wake your Mac mini from sleep. To continue this troubleshooting process, I would suggest reading over and working through the steps in the attached article to help isolate and resolve this issue.

  • Imac G4 15" Screen Stays Black After Screen Saver Goes To Sleep

I have an imac G4 15" that I just got from a friend that works pretty well, except that after it goes from the screen saver into to sleep mode, the screen stays black. I can hear the error chimes when I try to awaken the screen with the keys, but the screen just stays black. I have tried to increase the brightness, etc. but to no avail. Eventually I have to resort to re-booting and I am afraid that at some point, either the computer won't reboot or one of my external hard drives will crash. Any advice from someone who has experience with this issue would be greatly appreciated.
    THANKS!

  • Screen stays off after wake up from standby

So this happens most often when I have an external display connected, but has happened otherwise to me and my friend who has identical macbook.
usually, I'll connect the external display, then shut the screen on the macbook, then wake the macbook with an external mouse or keyboard, and use the macbook with the external display. When I'm done and want to disconnect the external display, i'll unhook it, and then open the screen on the macbook. when I open the screen, the standby light (the one that pulsates when in standby, and stays bright when screen is off and computer is not in standby) turns off, signifying that the computer has woken and the screen is running, but the screen remains off. the function keys for volume or contrast make nothing appear on the screen, and it is completely off, rather than just showing a black screen. if I shut the screen when this is happening, the standby light turns back on, and upon opening screen again, the standby light turns off again, but still, no display. it seems the only way to alleviate the problem is to hold the power button for 5 seconds. I've tried resetting the pram, and everything else you can reset upon booting, as well as doing the thing where you take the battery out, disconnect power, and hold power button for 7 seconds. nothing stops it from happening.
If i open the screen before disconnecting the external display, it usually works fine, but sometimes it happens without an external display ever being present.
    any ideas?
    -Tim

I use a dual monitor system at work all the time. The best thing to do is to disconnect the second monitor while your computer is still awake and open. It doesn't like it when you put it to sleep and then disconnect. It's probably like putting toothpaste in the ear of your best friend when he's drunk and passed out. Then when he wakes up he wonders why he can't hear out of one ear.

  • My screen stays grey after I sign in

After the "gong" and the Apple logo, it asks me to sign in. After that the screen goes gray and stays that way. Any ideas how to fix that?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • VLC fullscreen sometimes makes screen stay black after video ends

like the subject says, sometimes the screen just stays black when a video ends while VLC is in fullscreen mode.
I'm using VLC 2.0.8.a-1. I got the laptop in April, just in time for Revision 2013, had the problem more or less from the start, so that's since version 2.0.5 or 2.0.6
So far I haven't found a way to get things back to normal when it happens. I've tried
    press f
    press ESC
    close and reopen lid
switch to console (screen just stays black, even on consoles)
Apparently the only thing I can do is pop up a terminal window via shortcut and reboot.
As far as I can tell /var/log/Xorg.[0,1].log doesn't tell what's going on.
In case it's important, I've only experienced this on my Thinkpad T430, it never happend on my old ASUS laptop or on my desktop pc. An Intel issue maybe? The other two run on nvidia cards, the T430 does have an nvidia card in addition to the on-chip HD 4000 but I don't use it (I'd love to since the DP port is only usable with the nvidia card, haven't been able to make it work with bumblebee yet but that's a different issue).
Any ideas? Which log and config files do you need?

  • MBP C2D 17, Screen Artifacts.

I just got a MacBook Pro C2D 17", Glossy Screen.
When I wake the computer up after sleep in Windows Vista or Windows XP, the display shows extrange blue artifacts, this isn't enough of an issue to prevent me from working but makes me wonder if the computer's hardware is ok.
I've tried every driver there is for the Mobility Radeon card, also locking for a way to use an external display using the VGA adpater - no luck.
Have any of you guys experienced a similar problem?.

On Nov. 15, My order status on the Apple Web states shipped, with delivery date of Nov. 20. Apple is using BAX Global to deliver my notebook.
I tried to locate the package using BAX Global online tracking but got nothing, got in contact with BAX Global with no good result. (BTW, BAX Global are very helpful, even though they couldn't find this package on the system, they really tried)
At the same time, I send inquiry to Apple, but like my previous request was not yet answered.
Anyway, BAX Global contacted us on Nov 16 around 4:00pm that the package will be delivered on Nov 17 3:00~3:30pm. Will see what happens. If that is true, then the package will be 1 day late compare to the original delivery date. (I know I am in HK)
    Not bad at all.
But honestly, Apple should up the service in Asia because for some reason non of my request gets answered. Even the email notification that I received before (regarding the delay of delivery), was 3 days after the initial ship day, unlike other poster on this forum that gets the notification within a day.
With all the problem such as 'Grainy screen', heat, wireless issues etc. I need to give the computer a good run to see what happens. I will let you know how it perform once I get it. I am on business trip in China right now, will not be able to get the notebook until next week, 8(

  • Staying asleep after opening

    Hi There:
My MBP seems to periodically not come out of sleep after I open it. Is this normal? Also, it sometimes will come out of sleep when closed. I hear ichat connect and see the apple light up. Not too sure whats going on here.
    Thanks

I am having the same problem as well. I need to do a search on the forums and find out what the exact issues are.
What sort of hardware malfunction are you suggesting is the cause of the issue?

  • Ipod Screen Stays White After Update

After I updated to 4.2, I turned on my iPod. It seemed to start up like normal, with the little apple logo, but then it went right to sleep. Now, every time I push a button, it only shows a white screen for 5 seconds and then goes back to sleep mode. It somehow is still fully recognized by my mac, though.
    Any suggestions?

I would download the firmware and install it manually (by holding your Option key down in iTunes when clicking on Restore) and select the downloaded file.

  • MBP C2D owners: is there still warped lid problems?

Does any of you, already owners of a macbook pro core 2 duo, have any warped lids?
i wonder is apple fixed that, or if it is THAT common.
    thanks !

It's no worse than my 15" powerbook the MBP is replacing. The left corner is pretty much flush when closed. The right is a millimeter higher than the left. If you get a marware keyboard rest, it makes the closure completely flush.

  • Touchsmart 300-1003. Screen stays black after I turn it on. Windows 7/64Bit

The Product # is NY644AA#ABA I have already done the troubleshooting suggestions that I found in here. It did not help at all. The only thing that is very different now is that the fans are much louder than they used to be. Also, on the power switch, it used to be gold when the computer was asleep, and it was blue when it was running. Now there is no light at all. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

  • Mac won't fall asleep or stay asleep after Lion install. Why?

I have a Mac Pro 1,1 that was running perfect under Snow Leopard. Ever since upgrading to Lion, the computer wakes up randomly and will not ever go back to sleep on it's own. Under Energy Saver, I have the computer to automatically sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity but it never sleeps if left unattended. I have to manually go to the Apple menu to sleep the computer.
This is a probem for me due to the amount of power this workstation draws. I don't want it running all night, nor do I want to have to shut down after each use. What can I do??

Did you find a fix for this?
