Are you using thne latest drivers, from Boor Camp 1.1.2, that came out about 2 weeks ago? Or did you get drivers direct from ATI?

  • MBP C2D unable to boot on external OSX 10.4.8

I have a Mac mini CD and a external HDD, both are installed with OSX 10.4.8. My Mac mini can boot on both OSX. However the MBP C2D is unable to boot on both (mac mini CD in target disk mode, and ext. HDD), it can only boot on the built-in OSX. When I tried to boot that two OSX, first it loads for a while and then freeze at a white screen. Sometimes the white screen may even blink vigorously.
I even had made a disk image of the OSX on the ext. HDD and restored it on my MBP C2D's internal HDD. The same freeze still happened.
Now it seems that the MBP C2D is not compatible for OSX other than its origanal one.
Can anyone confirm the existence of the problem?

It is really bad. Does the Apple support line help? The support line in my region is not that "pro".
For the issue, I had never experience something like that on a Mac, neither MBP CD nor Mac mini CD, they can boot from each other's OSX or OSX on ext. HDDs.
I am really surprised by this problem on MBP C2D. I think it should be software issue and every one using MBP C2D should have the issue, right?

  • 15" MacBook Pro C2D won't boot

    Hey folks,
I'm in dire straights here.  My MBP C2D won't boot.  In fact, it won't do anything.  The only light that does come on is the charger cable, I get a green light there.  Beyong that, absolutely nothing.  Except for crickets.
I tried just pressing the power switch and holding down the power switch for about 10 second.  Neither results in any activity at all.
    Please help!

    Take it in for service.

MBP's just run vicious hot. i have woken up too many nights with mine burning my crotch. has to be some long term effects from that... you need to just manage the problem by keeping it raised on a cooling platform. i have gone as far as filling a ziplock baggie with crushed ice, and running the machine on the ice pack. best to be sure there is air that can pass below the machine when operating.

  • WinXp on External USB HD with MBP C2D and rEfit

I'll try to make this short... I've been in the process of installing WinXP onto an external USB drive to be used on my MBP C2D without installing ANYTHING on my OSX internal drive or partitioning. I've come a long way with tools from some very slick, resourceful people on the net and my own personal obsession with this.
This is where I am right now:
    - I've made a USB installable WinXP disk with this guide (http://www.ngine.de/index.jsp?pageid=4176)
    - I did install Boot Camp 1.1.2 to burn my driver disk, thats all.
    - I've boot to the XP disc then been able to begin the first phase of installation of XP, but when I reboot I am unable to boot to the windows drive to continue installation. Hitting Option -- or Cmd-Option-Shift-Delete doesn't work, also going into the OSX's Startup Disk option in System prefs. and selected the Windows drive doesn't work, it just sits there on the reboot.
    - So I came across rEFIt- great tool (http://refit.sourceforge.net/), I decided to install it to a spare USB thumb drive (a suggestion from the site). rEFIt comes up, I select the windows USB drive, the gray windows logo appears then... I get a Booting Legacy OS error concerning rEFIt not fiding the USB Device Path.
I've read people with other models have gotten this to work and other people with this model have reported similar problems. What I have gathered is that this could simply be an issue that rEFIt (despite being an awesome tool) is not up to date enough to work with the MBP C2D firmware, that is why we are having this problem with it not initializing the USB for boot up. I found a thread on another forum where someone was having issues with the MacPro firmware and rEFIt, the creator of had to come out with what is now version 0.8 to address the issue.
Wasn't sure if anyone had any other suggestions.... any help would greatly appreciated, like many, I've lost lots of sleep over this!
    THANKS!
    MacBook Pro C2D 2.33-PowerMac Dual 2.0 G5-PowerMac Dual 1.42 G4-Mac mini 1.42 G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Funny how I had exact same problem (Seagate 300Gb drive, works great with PB G4 1.67, worked fine with 1st Gen MBP 2.0Ghz, new c2d MBP 2.16 does something strange to this drive. After plugging the drive into my MBP, it will not work in any other computer until I power it down.) - I am sure you get errors in system log after plugging in the HDD (just open Terminal.app and type sudo dmesg to verify)
I called AppleCare, they had me take it to store to confirm the problem. Next Apple initiated return. Now I am sitting without a laptop since Nov 8 and replacement will come on Nov 17th at the worst and 15th at the best.
I would suggest you call Applecare and have them initiate a return. The USB controller has a problem. Let AppleCare know of the details of your problem.
Forgot to add - Since it also is a OS issue (I had kernel panic after plugging/unplugging the external USB drive) I filed a bug report with Apple.
You can also file a bug report with Apple - http://bugreport.apple.com) and remember to provide drive model, serial number and model number, and dmesg output with errors in the report

  • Help! I Can't Boot from Firewire Drive (Previous MBP C2D Hard Drive)

Can a hardrive from a C2D Macbook Pro start an i7 Quad MBP?
I just sold my 2008 15" 2.4ghz C2D MBP, (that had 10.6.5 installed), and today bought the newest
    17" 2.2ghz i7 Quad Core MBP, (that has 10.6.6 pre-installed.)
I installed a fresh HD on the 15" before selling it, and kept its HD, and put it into a FW800 enclosure.
+(note: The 15" Macbook Pro I just sold, booted fine from this HD in the FW800 enclosure.)+
Before migrating my data, from the FW800 drive, I figured I would upgrade the old OS to 10.6.6, so it would be a seamless migration.
While up and running on the brand new i7, I could see the FW800 drive with 10.6.5 as a Startup Disk option in System Preferences.
I rebooted holding down the option key, selected the FW drive, and pressed the arrow below to continue startup.
The grey screen with the apple came up immediately, but I was horrified that the spinning gear never did appear, and startup froze at that point. I left it like this for five minutes. Grey screen with apple. Frozen.
So, I held down the power key, shut it down, then restarted holding down Command-S to run Disk Utility in SIngle User Mode, (/sbin/fsck -fy). Disk was okay.
I rebooted into the new internal, installed Diskwarrior 4.3, and checked the FW800, and it had no errors.
I opened Startup Disk in System Preferences, and chose the FW800 drive as the Startup Disk, and rebooted. Same result. Grey screen with apple, and no further...
Can someone please help me troubleshoot this?
Should I be able to boot this new MBP i7 with the HD from my old MBP C2D?
Is there something incompatible between the old C2D and i7?
    Thanks in advance!

That CD2 OS will not boot into a new computer's OS.
    Hi, thanks for replying.
I knew that the switch to Intel from ppc, meant a ppc drive, partitioned with APM could not boot an intel machine with a GUID partition table.
    Do you know:
    1. for certain that a C2D HD cannot boot an i7 machine?
    2. and why?
    Ho Lee MACkeral wrote:
Why not use Migration Assistant in the Utilities folder?
I am planning on doing this.
    My old drive was 10.6.5.
The new machine has 10.6.6 pre-installed.
I figured that if I was able to upgrade the old drive to the same OSX first, it would provide a more seamless migration.
I was also concerned that my applications on 10.6.5 might become broken if they were migrated to 10.6.6. I really do not want to have to install everything.

2013 MBP 2.5 i5 4Gig 500MBHDD boots slow.  It finishes post in the same time as an identical MBP, and then hangs for 30 seconds on one of the ethernet adapters, before finishing the boot.  Once booted it is normal.   Turning off airport changes nothing.  Hardline adapter is not plugged in.  Thunderbolt adapter is not used.  Bluetooth is off.  Did this out of box.  Identical MBP boots to login screen in 36 seconds.  Disk repair, permission repair, and safe mode boot have
already been done, no change.  Boot time is consistent.  Hangs at the same place each time.  Right after post.  Bad adapter?
    Comments, solutions please.

... and so ... now a few days later, success.   I ran
your software but it told me nothing I hadn 't seen
    in verbose boot.
Consistently, following good post, the boot hung
for 30 seconds on the adapters, (cards, chips, NICs.
Ethernet cards, whatever you prefer to call them)
either the airport card or the hard line.  It would then
proceed at normal pace to the login screen.
Since it came out of the box that way, software
conflict was not a go.  I guessed glitched driver or
fetch instruction.  I zapped the PRAM (cleared
NVRAM) and reloaded the OS, updates, Garage Band,
iPhoto (one of Apple's true dogs in an otherwise
rare arena) iMovie, Photoshop, Lightroom, their
updates, and my files.   MBP pro now boots to login

whiz, rubber band scroll, global swiping and other
hubcaps and hood ornaments as befits how like

    I will. ever use.
Best guess ... corrupt driver or corrupt fetch script ...

  • Trying To Re-Install OS X on MBP C2D 2.4-17"

    I'm using a MBP 2.16-15" Core 2 Duo with 3Gb Ram, OS X 10.4.10
I am trying to re-install OS X on my friends MBP C2D 2.4-17"  OS X 10.4.10 using MY Install DVD's as he forgot  his! (My DVD OS V 10.4.8, AHT V 3A116, Disc V 1.0)
His MBP keeps coming up with the dreaded grey crash screen and black box telling me in English and other lang's to hold down the power key and re-start, after i try to boot from my dvd.
Do i need to use His dvd's? are mine not compatible? or do i need to re-format his drive and re-install?
    Any ideas would be helpful.
    Thanks

You cannot use your installer discs for his computer. Aside from the fact they are not the same, it's illegal.

  • Anybody gonna cancel order for 17"MBP C2D if shipping gets delayed again?

Just wondering if anybody else will want to cancel their order if our "updated" shipping date estimate is pushed back again. This is my first Apple (not including my ipod) and it has been a bad experience so far. I was looking forward to my new mac world but right now my trusty PC is looking better and better. If the delay was for something other than supply issues I might not want to get on this sinking ship.

I feel your pain...I ordered the new MBP C2D then cancelled the order, because I wanted to wait for some more feedback. I had ordered a custom configuration and when I called Apple to hold the shipment until I was got back to them they said that normally they won't do that and with it being a custom config it was not returnable. If i cancelled before shipment I would be able to in essence get a refund but in that case I wasn't even being billed for it since they don't charge the credit card until it is shipped. this all happened last night (sunday). I was made aware that if it were shipped anyway because it had already been built I could still return it for a refund since I had made the decision and it is on file with Apple before fedex got their hands on it.
fast forward to this morning.....Fedex got it before Apple pulled it from the loading dock......in the end, I don't really mind the situation. I will just drop it back at fedex. apple didn't pressure me into keeping it and even helped me expedite the return. I also don't need a replacement computer, so I am not in a bind.
Also, I guess, it i needed a new 'puter I would be ****** off with the delay....on the other hand, I would anticipate any delays or problems if I needed a new one.
good luck and hang in there....you won't be disappointed (i hope)

  • MBP C2D: Kernel Panics all over (11 days old)

    Hi,
my freshly arrived MBP C2D 15'' is a bit nervous.
    It panics a lot!
I use it for 11 days now and got about 25 kernel panics, about 15 of it yesterday. Usualy while doing really simple stuff, even while doing nothing(!), like reading a webpage or a mail (not clicking, scrolling or doing anything).
Worst case I had only safari and adium as active applications.
It says "unresolved kernel trap" in the panic.log.
It even hang on bootup, about one second after pushing the button. It than paniced with "no driver for this platform: acpi". It took me several trys, booting windows, resetting pram and finally starting in save mode to boot again into MacOS X.
    Any ideas?
BTW: I have an uneven backlight too, but it isn't worth the effort to send it back.
    MBP C2D 15'' Mac OS X (10.4.8)

They surely didn't do an 'Archive and install', cause
I did not find any backup with old data. (Not that I had left much data to be lost...)
So at least they did a 'clean and install'.
Yeah, zeroing out a drive takes time. But long term test do too. So does a MLB replacement. So I leave it up to the Support do decide if its the best (or first) thing to do. They are the experts, aren't they?
OK, Apple could reproduce my errors and they changed the MLB. And your advice is that I should have no "reason to suppose that this point that you have anything but a software issue". OK. Your opinion.
I can't recall if all panics happend with the AC adapter pluged in or not. But I got them pluged in to power outlets several hundred kilometers appart. So if it was about power fluctuations, they should be random an minimal, and well within spec.
"Apple can only be responsible for so much"
Yes. They are responsible for delivering to me a product (both hard- and software) which fulfils any advertised properties including anything from common practice.
An advertised property is "works out of the box". Which means to me, I don't have to zero out my HD and re-install my OS just to use it.
Something from common practice is, that I can install third party software. Apple is not responsible for that software, but (at least during the one-year waranty) I'm not the one who has to prove which software causes an error. (Of course they will make me pay, if they prove it was the third party software)
Another thing from common practice is, that a computer has to be reliable to a certain degree. In my opinion this is clearly more than a week. If this is longer than they are willing to wait to reproduce the error: not my problem.
I just have to prove the error exists. I don't have to make the error reproducable by them.
I'm sorry if all this sounded harsh to you. But I'm a little bit fed up with the situation. It's not that cheap to by a Mac. All I wan't is to use what I have bought.

  • Problem: DVD-RAM can no longer be read on MBP C2D

The "MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D" in my MacBook Pro C2D is said to have read (but not write) support for DVD-RAM media.
During the first few weeks of its lifetime, reading DVD-RAMs definitely worked. But now, no more, no matter what brand of media I try.
All other types of optical media continue to work as advertised (read and write).
I wonder whether this is a physical defect (but then why doesn't it affect other types of media?) or an issue caused by recent sopftware updates (but when I boot from an external DVD-drive using the very original MacOS DVD with no updates at all, why do I still not get read support on the internal drive?).
AFAIK there has not been any recent firmware update for this model. So what can be the reason? Should I let Apple swap the drive? Has anyone else observed the same issue?

    Hey Grant,
thought you'd like to know my "cleaning the lens with a cloth" worked fine - uh... but for about three days only, then back to the same old, same old.
I'd originally slid a business card covered with a lens cleaning cloth (from my camera bag) to clean the lens, and although the cloth emerged mostly pristine, I figured it must've done the trick as the drive started working again.
So this time, I decided to go in deeper. I actually took the whole drive apart - case off, drive out, drive dismantled - and I had a long look around to see if any parts looked dirty or damaged...
I found just one thing - the small silver rod on which the read/write head travels (the servomechanism that moves up and down the disc radius as it reads/writes) had some 'oily gunk' at the point where the travelling-head's 'sleeve' met it -  when I tried to move the head manually up and down the rod, it sort of staggered along. So I cleaned off the gunk with a cotton bud and then slid the drive-head up and down a few times 'till it seemed to run freely.
Put everything back - and fired up my Mac Pro. And the drive has been 100% fine since then - two whole weeks!
Maybe this time I've cracked it? (for my drive at least)

  • MBP Late2008 fail to boot if ethernet cable is connected

If I keep the ethernet cable connect to the mbp the system stay gray for a while (aprox 3/4 minutes) and then a blinking gray world is show.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
it sounds like your MBP is trying to boot from a NetImage which it tries to read from the ethernet connection.
Reboot your MBP with out the ethernet connection and then go to System Preferences - Startup Volume and set the default startup volume to the OSX volume on your internal harddisk.
Do the needed reboot and all should be well.

  • Keeps hanging...., Keeps hanging....

When rendering in FCP, it keeps hanging. If I do it in small sections it seems fine, but if I leave it to render a substantial amount, I just come back and find the programme frozen and have to force quit. Any ideas? Thanks.

1GB of RAM is a not enough. Your system just doesn't have the resources.
To run well, FCP needs 4 GB for itself and the OS needs a few additional GB (6 GB min)
If you run Compressor, 1 GB/core is a good place to start (8 GB min)
edit - In the for what it's worth catagory ...
Even though FCP won't access more than 4 GB, having significantly more RAM in the system allows you to keep a number of other apps open and functioning simultaneously. I ran with 10 GB for years and added another 6 GB now that I'm running the CS5.5 suite - particularly AE . It all gets used in Snow Leopard with the system booted into 64bit mode.
    Good luck,
    x

  • 15' Macbook Pro keeps hanging

My Macbook keeps hanging, it happens every few minutes, sometimes it can happen 3 or 4 times within a minute.
I've used Etrecheck and copied the results below.
Paragon NTFS seems to be a problem, I thought i had already uninstalled it but apparently not. I have tried reinstalling it and then uninstalling it again, but i can't get rid of it. Any ideas?
Also, what is the system launch daemon?
Finally, should i worry that there are 11 errors on the Hard drive. Disk utility says it is fine.
    Thanks,
    Ben.

Finally, should i worry that there are 11 errors on the Hard drive.
Yes.  The drive could be failing.  First and foremost make sure you have a current backup of your hard drive.
Next, as John pointed out uninstall MacKeeper and keep away from it from now on.  Linc Davis posted excellent instructions for removing MacKeeper:

"MacKeeper" is a scam with only one useful feature: it deletes itself.
    First, back up all data.
Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions.
If you have incompletely removed MacKeeper—for example, by dragging the application to the Trash and immediately emptying—then you'll have to reinstall it and start over.
IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button in the dialog that appears. All the other functional components of the software will be deleted. Restart the computer and empty the Trash.
☞ Quit MacKeeper before dragging it to the Trash.
☞ Let MacKeeper delete its other components before you empty the Trash.
☞ Don't try to drag MacKeeper from the Dock or the Launchpad to the Trash.
☞ Don't try to remove MacKeeper while running in safe mode.
As for the HD errors Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair the disk several times.  Also repair disk permissions. Reboot normally and rerun Etrecheck to check for the HD errors.
