MBP C2D shutdown/restart problems

I have had problems with my new C2D 2.33 MBP. recently it would not shut down/restart. i played with things are discovered that if i turn off the airport before shutdown/restart then it proceeds normally, but if my airport is on while i try to shutdown/restart then it will go to the blue screen and stay forever then i have to do a hard reset. Does anyone else have this problem? Anyone know why so many problems with Airport this time around?

Based on your description, it may suggest a conflict within permissions. You can verify permissions to see if your system identifies a conflict or otherwise perform the repair. The process will not compromise or harm anything with your Mac so it’s worth a shot.
Repair Permissions:
Go to: Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
Select: your Hard Drive
Select: the First Aid tab
Select: Repair Permissions

    Pleaz help!
my problem is that the computer freezes whenever I try to shut it down! When I press the shutdown button or the Restart button, it goes fine until the screen windows shutting down screen and just sits there. Like its freezing up on this screen.
then I have to just kill the power to the machine to shut it down and then re-power.
When I start it back up, it shows no kind of errors or anything, just boots up normally and runs ok. I have booted up in the "safe mode"
and it still freezes up on the same screen
I'm using the latest drivers for everything
Has anyone had this problem and know why its doing this?

You have a service/program that is running in the background, and that hangs when it is trying to shut down. It is not dangerous, but it is inconvenient. The few times I have encountered it, it has gone away eventually, or I have found which program that it is that causes it. I do not know if it helps, but it might be a good idea to check your event log, to see if it has been logged.
I can otherwise recommend a program called Switch Off, which can shut down your computer. It has the ability to "force" programs and services to shut down instead of hanging the computer. It also has several modes of operation, some which are timers to allow your computer to shut down after a certain time or at a certain specific time.
It might also be a good idea to disable whatever program you run at startup, so that they do not start, and see if it shuts down properly when they are not running in the background.

  • MacBook Pro 17" Early 2011 Model: Auto Shutdown/Restart Problem

    Hey guys!
This is my first time to sign in, join the community, and ask a question or create a discussion. FYI, I really have little knowledge on tech stuff so please bear with me. Here's my problem, and I hope you can give out your suggestions:
I have a MacBook Pro 17" Early 2011 Model which I have upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion.
A month or two ago, it had started shutting down or restarting at random times. As time passed, this problem became more frequent.
I finally decided to have it checked at Digital Hub, a licensed Apple distributor. After almost a week, they've finally diagnosed that the problem is with my battery. I got my MacBook pro back around 2 (two) weeks ago, and ever since then I had to use an outlet in order for it and myself to work properly. Right now, I'm still saving up to purchase new batteries.
Recently, however, I've noticed that my MacBook Pro auto restarts even when plugged. Take note, RESTART and no longer shutting down completely. Upon further trials, I've finally concluded that it does so only during the use of heavy programs such as Diablo 3, Final Cut Pro X, and when rendering with iMovie. I have yet to try with Adobe products, particularly with Lightroom and Photoshop, and see if it does the same. But more or less, that's what I've noticed so far.
Given that I still haven't purchased the battery yet, I know it's still vague to know the real probelm/solution. But with the given situations, what are you views on this matter? Please let me know. It'd be of great help. Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon!

(Note, I'm a starting out Multimedia Arts Student and photographer. I have little knowledge of the industry for now, but I'm willing to learn. So please forgive me if I don't understand your suggestions at once if they are very in depth or technical.)

Thanks for taking so much time in helping me.
    Just an update:
    2 loops/passes done - no errors.
Called up Digital Hub and talked to the technician, he says there are 3 possible problems:
    1. Battery (which is still inside the laptop) may cause some disturbances with the electric current
    2. Software related - most likely re-formatting may be needed
    3. Video card may have failed, which means complete change of the logic board ----> worst case
I'm crossing my fingers that it's either of the first two.

  • 10.6.8 Shutdown/Restart Problem

After getting ready to finally "free upgrade" to mavericks (did not do it yet) my 2008 old Mac Pro with 10.6.8 started having a shut down problem with blue screen with the wheel of death spinning overnight. I do not want to install Mavericks until I get a successful shut down. I have tried PRAM Reset. Turing off old  Iantivirus. Haven't had problems for a while so don't remember what else I can do. Help!

First, make sure your Mac can run Mavericks  >  OS X Mavericks: System Requirements
iAntivirus is most likely the cause of the shut down / blue screen / spinning beach ball problems. See the results of an Apple Support Communities search here.

  • MBP C2D 2,16 GHz instantly shutdown when unplugged

    Morning.
Since today my MBP C2D instantly shutdowns after appr. 2 sec when the power adapter becomes unplugged. If I only unplug the MBP for less then 2 seconds it remains working.
And without power adapter it's not possible to start the the MBP. When I press the on/off button, it clicks, the fans and the HDD begin to race but after less than a second it shutdowns.
I've tried three PRAM resets and three SCM resets without fixing the issue.
What's wrong? What can I do to fix my MBP?
    TIA ans kind regards, Friedrich

Your battery sounds very healthy. Here is my battery information for comparison:
    Battery Information:
    Model Information:
    Serial Number: SMP-ASMB014-3717-8b8
    Manufacturer: SMP
    Device name: ASMB014
    Pack Lot Code: 0002
    PCB Lot Code: 0000
    Firmware Version: 102a
    Hardware Revision: 0500
    Cell Revision: 0102
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 6488
    Fully charged: Yes
    Charging: No
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 6526
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 53
    Condition: Good
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): 0
    Voltage (mV): 12543
The only thing that strikes me is that you have all zeros in the Pack Lot code, the Firmware Version, the Hardware Revision, and the Cell Revision, where mine has numbers. I don't know if this is even significant, since my battery is for a 17" machine and is I think a later model.
I am wondering if there is a mechanical problem with the connection between your battery and your MBP--maybe a bent pin or something so that the battery is not engaging properly. The connection might be good enough for the System Profiler to recognize the battery, but maybe not good enough for the battery to run the computer.
Inspect the pins on both the Mac and the battery, and see if you can see what the problem is. If nothing is obvious to you, you might want to have a trained professional take a look, like either at an Apple Store or an AASP.
    Good luck!

  • FWIW...Solved my Airport reception problem on MBP C2D

After 2 hours with AppleCare it turns out I had to many computers on my airport network (7) which slowed down my benchmark internet times on my MBP C2D at speakeasy. It seems an old G3 iMac may be the main culprit. When I turn off its airport my MBP speed goes up 3-4X.
    BobM

Nikolaus... I might agree with that except the MBP is the only machine affected. My G4, 1yr old ibook, 2 yr old iMac, and another older G4 are not having any problems. When I turn off the G3 only the MBP C2D improves alot.

  • MBP C2D - Problems burning Double Layer Discs

I encounter massive problems when trying to burn DVD+R DL Discs. The MBP C2Ds internal drive is supposed to burn DL media but the only way to burn them is under win xp using my external philips ED16DVDS usb2 burner. Nero produces coasters using the internal matshita burner.
Under Mac OS Toast as well as Mac OS X give me error messages before starting to burn.
The Media I use is called intenso DVD+R double layer. Intenso media has worked exceptionally well for my needs over the last years. This is no cheap stuff.
I am thankful for any suggestions.
MacBook Pro C2D 2,13 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Seagate 300GB FW Drive, WD MyBook Pro II 1TB FW800

Can you tell us exactly what the error message says under Toast?

  • Problem: DVD-RAM can no longer be read on MBP C2D

The "MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D" in my MacBook Pro C2D is said to have read (but not write) support for DVD-RAM media.
During the first few weeks of its lifetime, reading DVD-RAMs definitely worked. But now, no more, no matter what brand of media I try.
All other types of optical media continue to work as advertised (read and write).
I wonder whether this is a physical defect (but then why doesn't it affect other types of media?) or an issue caused by recent sopftware updates (but when I boot from an external DVD-drive using the very original MacOS DVD with no updates at all, why do I still not get read support on the internal drive?).
AFAIK there has not been any recent firmware update for this model. So what can be the reason? Should I let Apple swap the drive? Has anyone else observed the same issue?

    Hey Grant,
thought you'd like to know my "cleaning the lens with a cloth" worked fine - uh... but for about three days only, then back to the same old, same old.
I'd originally slid a business card covered with a lens cleaning cloth (from my camera bag) to clean the lens, and although the cloth emerged mostly pristine, I figured it must've done the trick as the drive started working again.
So this time, I decided to go in deeper. I actually took the whole drive apart - case off, drive out, drive dismantled - and I had a long look around to see if any parts looked dirty or damaged...
I found just one thing - the small silver rod on which the read/write head travels (the servomechanism that moves up and down the disc radius as it reads/writes) had some 'oily gunk' at the point where the travelling-head's 'sleeve' met it -  when I tried to move the head manually up and down the rod, it sort of staggered along. So I cleaned off the gunk with a cotton bud and then slid the drive-head up and down a few times 'till it seemed to run freely.
Put everything back - and fired up my Mac Pro. And the drive has been 100% fine since then - two whole weeks!
Maybe this time I've cracked it? (for my drive at least)

  • Installation completed MBP C2D no problems

    Hello all;
After reading install experiences for the last 36 hours, I decided to install on my Macbook Pro 2.33 C2D. No problems at all. Total time including scanning DVD for errors was about 90 mins or so.
Blue screen sat there for about 2 minutes.
I do notice that after 1st reboot, a process called 'mdworker' has been working for about 10 mins or so.... I assume its related to spotlight re-indexing...
So far I love what I see....

As usual - having red all the horror stories on this forum I too proceeded with caution when installing leopard. I backed up all my essential data and chose ERASE INSTALL. I then installed the iLife 08 from my Tiger CD and am good to go. Got no problems whatsoever knock on wood.
To be honest - every time there's a new product or a new update of any kind - people will experience problems. No two mac's are alike.... everyone got different 3rd party add ons or other programs that may or may not cause problems. For the majority of Mac users however - this install will most likely go smoothly.
I'm sure some stuff will need updating as time goes by.... but overall I'm extremely happy with the new OSX.
For those of you that got all your stuff backed up and want a clean install - I recommend it
    Cheers
P.S. I'm positive that those poor souls that are having problems now - solution will present itself in a very near future ..... as it always does. One thing about Apple is.... they never leave you stranded for a long time. And the help you get from these forums is better than any forum I've ever come across.

  • MBP C2D Restarting when closing the lid

Every once in a while when I close the lid on my MBP, the computer restarts. When I open the lid it finishes the restart process and runs normally. Any ideas why this would all of a sudden start happening??

Wait for the light on the release button to start blinking before moving the laptop. The sudden motion sensor can act up as you move the laptop when it's still in the process of 'falling asleep'.

  • Temperature-related startup failure in MBP C2D

My MBP C2D fails at startup when rebooting after normal use (means web surfing and playing music with iTunes) and temperatures in my MBP's CPU cores have been ~50C or more by Temperature Monitor.
At startup DVD-drive makes it's normal eject sound, but then nothing, screen stays black. There is no startup sound or gray screen. I need to shutdown computer, let it cool down and after that it will start again.
Hardware test doesn't find anything and reseting PMU, PRAM or SMC doesn't help.
Problem seems to be temperature-related. Solutions?
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Sorry for posting a not-so-helpful reply, but I think perhaps there is something wrong with the temperature sensor(s). The processor should shutdown only when the upper temperature threshold is exceeded. I suppose the hardware test cannot be run when the machine is still "hot"? I would call AppleCare...

  • Unprompted user switching MBP C2D 2.33 10.5.8

My MBP C2D 2.33 running 10.5.8 has recently developed the following problem: The desktop suddenly "swivels" to the Login Window without having been prompted to do so. It does not log me out, it just switches to the Login Window. When I log back in I can see all of the windows still open with the work in progress, but the computer switches back to the Login Window within a second or two.
Restarting means losing the unsaved work in progress, but allows me to log back in and continue working. The problem has occurred 3 times over the past 3 days, twice while doing nothing more complicated than composing a message in Mail.
This problem is a bit annoying while I'm working at home, but my work involves a lot of presentations for groups from 12-200 people and I can't afford to have this happen under those circumstances. I've used Disc Utility to repair the permissions database but am looking for another more specific diagnosis and fix if possible. I can do an archive and install of Leopard if necessary but am not looking forward to it.

Just happened again, this time with Mail not even open. Acting suspiciously like a parental controls issue, even though this is happening on the Admin account rather than one of the kids' accounts. I'll try turning parental controls off altogether to see if it helps.
