MBP can't see computers on network

*Network:*
1 PC Vista Ultimate
2 PC XP Pro
1 Netbook XP home
1 Mac Book Pro w/ Leopard 10.5.6 OS
Linksys Wireless router and using Airport. WPA security setup with passcode and all is well for logging into router and being assigned dynamic IP address.
This network has been in operation over 3 years with all the PCs and hardware in windows file sharing environment.
*Problem:*
Vista and XP can see the Mac in the network
MBP can't see other PC's in Network panel
SMB file sharing is on
Workgroup is set and Ok 'HOME NETWORK' on all PCs & MBP
I can Ping the Vista and XP pc's IP address
But I can't see the shared PC's, printers, or PC file shares on Mac Book
I am newby on Apple networks and the Mac OS is familar to me yet.
Anybody have a clue as to what I missed in setup.

Well you network is unique because of the different software firewalls on the different flavors of Windows. So first read "Well known" TCP and UDP ports used by Apple software products, Sharing files between a Windows Vista Home Edition PC and a Mac running OS X Leopard 10.5 and the Apple discussion thread Explanation of Leopard NetBIOS (Windows Sharing) Wackyness With Solutions!. Then see if anything in these links help.
Now if this is a Windows domain (it has to be 2003 or better) then look at the article Connecting a Macintosh running Leopard (10.5) to SBS 2003. Plus for you printing problem read the older web pages (for 10.4.x but it ill may help) Printing to a printer on a Windows XP PC from a Mac running 10.4.x and How to Use a Printer Attached to a Windows XP Computer in Mac OS X and Adding a printer shared by a Windows computer via SMB/CIFS.
Lastly did you know about the web site MacWindows.com? Also a lot of people have been having problems with Linksys routers and OS X. IMHO other routers don't seem to have this problem. I sure hope one of these links help, Good Luck.

  • My new MBP can't see my Time capsule

    Hi
Thanks for any help with this :
I use my capsule about once every 2 weeks to back up the MBP.
Have a new MBP and wanted to back it up for the first time. The MBP is running 10.7.2.
It could see the Time Capsule originally but said it needed a firmware update as its an original 1TB capsiule:
I don't have the capsule connected to the internet directly because I just don't like the idea of that.
When you'd disconnect the MBP from the internet WiFi, to connect to the Capsule, the capsule would say it needed an update - HOWEVER when you'd connect back to the WiFi network then airport utility didn't see a capsule to see a need for the firmware update:
    My questions are:
    1) can you download the firmware manually.
    2) can the USB slot be used for connecting to the computer ??? It seem not to be possible as nothing comes up on the computer when the two are connected
I tried other strategies like setting up the Capsule on the house WiFi - now the MBP can't see the Capsule at all at all, ----green light on, soft resets done, USB in the back.
The only thing I havn't tried yet is to get an Ethernet cable - years since I had one and lost. Guess I'll have to go out and get one
    Thanks
    Tom

partial solution - hold the reset button down for longer than one sec, held it down for 5-6 sec and this reset the connection info to default so the computer could see it again.
Getting the firmware onto it remained a larger problem.

  • Airport Extreme green light but can't see the wifi network

Hello, coming back from the holidays I can't see my Wifi network anymore (From PS3, Phone, Computers ..etc.). My airport has a greenlight and the internet is working fine if my computer is connected with an Ethernet cable. I re-did the configuration many times and I did a hard reset of both my modem and the airport. It is not setted to a hidden connection. All the settings are basic like before. The only difference is that I did the update to 7.6.4.

I think you were right, my airport was broken and I noticed that at the end of the configuration process where there's a green checkmark it was written in the bottom that a wifi device wasn't working properly. Nothing could be done to make it work though.
I bought a new Airport Express now but I still have a major problem. I was able to configure it through wifi with my iMac without any problem and now it is connected to the internet via wifi perfectly but i STILL can't see the network with either my Android phone or my PS3 console !?
    - Brand new airport express
    - configured to "create a wifi network" with a WPA2 password using the simple steps of the airport utility
    - Airport Utility 5.6.1
I did reset the airport express a few times with the utility and by removing the power cord. I also did reset my iMac and I can still connect to the wifi just fine with it.

  • Server can't see itself on network, other devices can

When I create a Network user either using Server app or Workgroup manager home folder is not created. I started digging and I found that all devices on the network can see and access server's afp, but server can't see itself on network. On everyone's computer's "server" is shown inside finder, but if I open server's finder I can only see other's computers but I can't see server.
I've tried opening afp://(IP ADDRESS), afp://(DOMAIN), afp://localhost and none of this work inside server. DNS is fine, users can log and see files, etc. The only thing not working is afp from within the server and therefore user's accounts can't be created.
As a background I have a mac mini running under Mountain Lion with OS Server. I had an issue with Open Directory on which I couldn't edit/create/delete any user so I erased the OD Database and started over again.
Any idea will be very appreciated.
    Thanks All !!!

Thanks a lot for your quick response, I'm not sure if I'm doing this correctly but if I use anything with afp.XXXX I get an error saying afp.XXXX.com not found (NXDOMAIN) but also I don't have any server named "afp".
If I use it without "afp." I get:
    Using domain server:
    Name: 192.168.3.254
    Address: 192.168.3.254#53
    Aliases:
    (server).com has address 192.168.3.254
or if I use 192.168.3.1 (main router) I get the public IP since everything is forwarded to that server (is the onlyone on the network).
For checking DNS I used changeip -checkhostname and I get:
    Primary address     = 192.168.3.254
    Current HostName    = (server).com
    DNS HostName        = (server).com
The names match. There is nothing to change.
    dirserv:success = "success"
When I connect my clients to VPN I don't have any DNS issues.
I also thought it was a DNS problem but FTP, Web, and everything else works within the server, within the network and for external networks, AFP is the onlything not working.
Please let me know if you need any information, I really appreciate your help since this is anoying and I can't create folders for new users even if I use "createhomedir" command.
    Thanks!!

  • My iphone can't see any wifi networks

my iphone can't see any wifi networks ... i tried to reset network setting and reset all setting and update the ios system but no way

I, too, fear it might be a hardware problem . I removed all security from my router but still no networks appear in the list nor can I connect directly by typing in the SSID. Tried two routers: Apple Airport Extreme and a Linksys something-er-other provided by Bell.
I will give HP a call tomorrow and see if they can sort this out.
    Thank you for your help/advice!
Edit: almost certain it's a hardware problem: I clicked on the Help button while on that "Scanning for networks" dialog during initial setup and as one of the "helpful" suggestions, it said my Mac address was 00:00:00:etc.

  • Xserve/Windows Network Issue - can't see computers

seriously, everything was fine until xmas eve. Now I can't see the computers on the network on a mac or a pc.
Now, when I go to Start/My Network places on a pc the share points do not show up.
Also when I go View Workgroup Computers - it returns an error. In the error it mentions permissions. I've propogated permission, restarted SMB services and restarted twice.
OSX 10.5.1, Xserve, standalone server, SMB services are running, one username and password for everyone with r/w permission, even guests access is turned on, ...
AT&T Netopia dsl modem (bridged mode), Linksys wireless router with ip's assigned to all computers, to a switch that routes to users and two more switches.
note - I can see a few macs on Mac OSX Tiger and Leopard but nothing on the pc's. I can, however, see a unix sever that's on the network by typing
ServerName in an explore address bar. And at one time I could type in
Xserve on both macs and pc's but no longer.
    Thanks,
    ctrent

I'm not sure I get what your setup looks like but:
"Linksys wireless router with ip's assigned to all computers"
Does this mean this is your Internet router and it's setup for serving IP's through DHCP to LAN clients? I would use the Xserve for DHCP also serving the (search) domain name and LDAP server name and search base.
And why is server still at 10.5.1?
You need a newer version, at least 10.5.3.
The Windows/SMB service should have the domain/workgroup name entered in CAPITALS.
Windows clients will have problem seeing the Netbios workgroup/domain if the Windows firewall is one/not letting SMB traffic through.
All Windows clients should be setup using the same netbios Workgroup/Domain name or bound to a SMB domain (OD Master and PDC configuration reuqired in the server).

  • Can't see Computers/Servers in Finder on local ip network

I'm trying to share some files between by Powerbook and iMac.
    Both are running Tiger.
Both are configured with IP on the same subnet and can ping each other
Both are using wifi as their network interface
Both can get to the internet, iMac, iDisk fine...
I turned on sharing on both systems.
When I go to finder and browse under Network i can only see my local machine.
This is true on both systems..
Any ideas about how to fix or troubleshoot?

Rebooting usually makes the machines show up in rhe network browser.
The reliable way, of course, is to connect using Finder's "Connect to server" window. The address you enter looks like this:
    afp://Clamshell.local
Once you type it in you can save them in a list. It's very professional. You can also remount servers using the "Recent Items" list in the Apple menu, but if the server is not online it makes your Finder spin wheels for a few minutes.
    Agonizing.

  • My 13in Macbook Pro can't see a wireless network but my friends Macbook Pro can

Me and my friend both have identical 13 in Macbook Pro's except he has 250 gb and I have 350gb. Everything else is the same even the wireless card. The problem is, he can see and connect to a unsecured wireless network but i can't. Why is this ?
Our computers can see the same networks on the list but my Macbook does not see one network, the unsecured network !!!

I never said there wasn't an issue, just that blame could not be assigned based on what we know now and that there are many more people not having problems with Leopard and WiFi than those that are.
In my circle of associates I know of literally hundreds of Mac owners, of which approximately three are having WiFi issues.
I know how frustrating it is to be one of those afflicted - my stories of constant WiFi drops for the first six months I owned my MBP have been recounted in several threads.
But it's just as frustrating to read how Leopard is just plain broken when in fact I've not seen a single WiFi drop in Tiger or Leopard since February 2007.
This is also why I've continually urged people experiencing the problem to open an AppleCare case - it's only then that Apple Engineering can find the commonalities in cases where WiFi is failing and either fix their driver or notify the router manufacturer of their bug.
Are there bugs with AirPort in Leopard? Of course, and I even know of one that affects me on occasion that's known, and that's a failure to reassociate with a known network when waking from sleep. The workaround is simple - toggle AirPort off and back on - but it's a known issue nevertheless.
But each of these threads addresses an individual problem, and among the numbers of people experiencing difficulties, few report that their Mac sees no wireless networks, and that's what the advice I've given in this thread is geared towards.

  • HT1551 Apple TV - can only see Computers and Settings options (no internet)

sine the apple2 tv software was updated last week I can only see options for computers and settings
whilst my internet connection is clearly working, I cannot access youtube or internet radio as there is no internet option
any ideas how to fix this pls?

My ATV3 has worked beautifully for the last week.  We woke up this morning to find this problem. Nothing weird happened over night - my entire network has been up all night with no resets or anything strange.
The ATV3 accessing all of my Home Sharing content, so I know the network is fine (wired). Tried resetting and cycling power.  Tried changing locations/setting language.  Nothing. I even tried resetting my DSL Router, but to no avail.
I've got nothing fancy going on with my location, short of being in Canada.
Update: Oh, and I have a 2nd ATV3 downstairs, also on a wired connection.  Just found out that it, too, is exhibiting the same error.  Although, I'd left it in 'iTunes Match' last night and the first thing I saw when I started it up was "Error:  iTunes is Unavailable. Please try again later".  Plugged my old Popcorn Hour in and it, at least, is working fine.

  • Macbook: I can't see my home network....

I am using a Macbook as detailed in my profile. Yesterday, upon getting home from work I booted up my Macbook to find out I couldn't get on the net.
Upon further investigation I found that the Macbook could not see my home network, despite me using it the previous evening. It can see all the other local networks that it usually can, as well as the mobile modem that I am using to type this now.
All other computers on the network can see it, and looking on the network configuration screen it can see my Macbook. But I can't see it
The router is a Belkin one

Tried that yesterday - still no joy

  • Can't see files on network

i'm a new mac user after many faithful years of pc use. anyway, i use my college network often but i haven't been able to make use of it on my new macbook pro. i can connect to the network and even get on specific computers but once i get connected, i can't see any files in the finder. it says "0 files, XXX.XGB" with the X's being numbers.
i'm not really sure what to do about this.
    thanks

In Finder try the 'Connect to Server' option in the 'Go' drop down list, Put the IP address or the FQDN of the PC if it has one. eg.
    smb://192.168.1.15/sharename
Have a look at this Apple help page

  • Mbp can't see my airport !

I've been using my mbp with AExtreme n for 6 months without any problems. Since 2 weeks, sometimes when I boot my mbp, it can't see the airport. I haven't changed or moved anything ! Strangely, my mbp can see other wifi networks and my colleagues have no problem seeing my airport. I have to reboot my computer at least 5 times so that it sees the airport again.
    Any ideas why ?

    Try the following:
    1. Delete Preferred Network(s)
    - System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Configure
    - In the "By default, join:" pull-down menu, select "Preferred networks"
    - Delete the network(s) you regularly use from the list
    2. Delete AirPort Keychain Entries
    - Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in Applications/Utilties.
    - Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
    - Restart, or log out then back in.
    3. Add Preferred Network(s)
    - System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Configure
    - In the "By default, join:" pull-down menu, select "Preferred networks"
    - Add the preferred network(s) using the "+" button.
    - Restart or log out then back in.

  • Can't see any bonjour network printers

I have a MBP 17" running 10.6.8 and I've lost the functionality to see or add any network printers.
It was running 10.5 and I lost the ability to see or add new printers.  I reset the printing system and then lost the ability to see any network printers at all.  It still recognizes our HP printers when plugged in via USB, but not over the network.  So I upgraded to 10.6.8 today to see if that would solve the issue.  It didn't.
I go into system preferences and try to add a printer but it shows that there are no available printers.  Even though on my MBP 15" I can see both of our HP printers over the network just fine.
I can add the printer via the IP address and choosing the correct driver but I'm still unable to print.  I CAN print a test page from the HP Print Utility...so it can see and talk to the printer (HP Photosmart Premium c140), but I still can't see it under the Print and Fax preference pane.
    I'm at a loss here.
Does anyone know why I would loose the ability to see any Bonjour devices over the network?  Any thoughts on solutions?

I have an HP c309a All-In-One printer and am having a similar problem.  After upgrading to 10.6.8, I can no longer scan wirelessly but I can still print. Bonjour seems to have disappeared and is no longer a means to connect to my printer. It will only connect via Bluetooth. My mother has the same printer and OS and she too said she's having problems scanning.
I've tried to scan using HP scan software, Preview and Image Capture to no avail. Of course, the Apple Tech said I should talk to HP which I did. The HP guy said, I should be able to use Bonjour and that there is probably a conflict between Bonjour and Bluetooth. If he gave me anymore advice, it would cost me $20 because the 2 year old printer is out of warranty. Ridiculous.
