MBP cant read DVD+RW?

Hi, When I record to a DVD+RW on my DVD recorder and then try to read the same disc on the MBP it thinks it is a blank disc? Any idea's? specs say it should be compatible?
Thanks
Bob

So much for that idea - sorry. What brand of disks are you using? And have you successfully used your MBP drive with DVD+RW's before? I'd try a different brand (Verbatim seems to be the least problematic; I've also used Imation successfully on both my Macs and the DVD recorder). And I have a case number with Applecare for my MBP's drive (60 seconds for an icon to appear on the desktop and it won't burn at my preferred slower speeds). So, it could be either the media or your drive - those two possibilities are the only other things I can think of. If you have an Apple store near you, you might want to make an appointment there.

  • Satellite L755-169 cant read DVD+ R DL

    Hay guys
I have a problem on my Toshiba Satellite L755-169 (PSK2YE), that my laptop cant read the DVD+R DL but I hear the DVD reader try to read but it can.
Why and how can I fix this problem?

    Hi
As far as I know the drive supports definitely the DVD+R DL disks.
I found this info about the compatibility:
    CD-R(read/write),
    CD-RW(read/re-write),
    DVD-R SL, DL(read/write),
    DVD-RW(read/write),
    DVD+R SL, DL(read/write)
    DVD+RW(read/write),
    DVD-RAM(read/write),
    CD-ROM,
    DVD-ROM
You can read the DVD+R DL 8x and you can write the DVD+R DL 6x
I think you should test different disks from different manufacturers. Not all brands supports the same specifications.

  • Imac 21.5" can read CD but cant read DVD

    Hello everybody,
I have an imac 21.5", i bought this imac in july of 2010. Previously the superdrive works perfectly but now the superdrive can't read dvd.
the strangle is that the superdrive can read cd's but no dvds.
    some suggestion?

I'm having this problem too. Intel iMac 21.5in  can read audio cds, but attempts at trying to read several different type of DVDs are failing to load. Spits the dvd out after trying for a minute or two.  I've hardly ever tried doing anything with DVDs since getting this computer, so  I can't speculate as to when the problem started.
Are there any known solutions to this problem ?  If I had an Apple store closer than 200 miles I'd take it there.

  • Cant Read DVD

I hope this is the right forum for this question ?
My Dad made a DVD of a lot of old family 8mm film. Somehow the DVD got scratched and will no longer play on my Mac. However, it will play on the cheap DVD player my kids have in my Truck. A few times the pictures gets screwed up but still plays, I guess thats where the Mac.....says nope. I tried to copy it to my Mac. But I get the message that it cant be read.
Is there any way to tell the Mac to ignore errors and just copy the DVD to my computer ? Or any other ideas. My Dad is no longer here, nor do I have any idea what he did with the original 8mm film. This is sort of a must do.
    Thanks
    Paul

It's weird how sometimes the cheap DVD players seem less picky about what they play. Go with BDAqua's suggestions first. It may still be possible to salvage or reduce the number of rough spots.
If not, you might try to make a copy of the DVD with Toast. While Toast will not fix the damaged video tracks, it might provide you with something that is playable even with the existing faults.
As a last resort, you can use the truck's DVD player (I assume some sort of aftermarket rig) to feed the video (with existing faults) to a capture device on your mac to re-encode. You can then burn a new DVD with the same faults but no scratches.
Obviously, for such a treasured heirloom, several copies made to high quality media would be appropriate regardless of how you resolve this.
Best of luck. To put your mind at ease, the "last resort" method will work--And considering that the original source is 8mm, I doubt that the quality hit will even be noticeable.
    Video capture devices:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/search/video+capture
One more thing: Once you have secured everything that you can from this disk, you might then look into various disk scratch repair products to help recover the missing footage. Sometimes these products can help and sometimes they just make things worse. The best bet is to salvage what you can before risking further data loss.
Again, best of luck to you. These types of documents can play an important role in preserving a sense of continuity for both the family and its individual members.

  • Mbp stopped reading dvd but stills reading cd, is a damaged drive or an software problem? any solutions?

the drive was working just fine but today it just reads cd´s , it spits every dvd i insert (burned or not)

That sounds like a hardware problem to me.  When teh optical drive went bad in my MacBook Pro, it stopped writing to DVD's first, then eventually it stopped writing to CD's...

  • Satellite Pro M30: Can't read DVDs on DVDrw drive

    I cant read dvds...
i can burn them but when i start to read them it shows me an error like this " E:\ is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."
    its killin me, please help

    Hi
The I/O device error occurs if drive has a problem with the disc or your system config (mainly a disc problem).
The DVD drive cant read all DVDs or just the burned DVDs?
Which burning software did you use?
As far as I know you should always closed the burning session.
Furthermore if you need the DVD Shrink software please check this links:

i tried restarting, PRAM, i tried to do a first aid with DiskUtil but it doesnt have an option for the drive.
can anyone help me please?? thanks sooo much in advance!

    If they are CDs:
    1. Are they by Imation, Kodak, Sony, or Verbatim?
    If they are DVDs:
    1. Are they by Verbatim or Ritek?
Apple uses Verbatim for their prebundled packs they used to sell.
If the answer to either of the above is no, it is possible you have bad media. These are the best media manufacturers for the type of media. The drives are sensitive to marginal media.
If they are either, are any of them:
    2. Bought on spindels?
    3. Any hand writing on the label?
    4. Any sticky label?
    5. Nonstandard as indicated by this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2446?viewlocale=en_US
    6. Burnt at the maximum speed?
    7. Burnt as Joliet, or UDF
If the answer is yes to any of these questions, you have bought media whose life is likely to either be short, or potentially made it unreadable.
    Stick to prepackaged jewelcase media.
Never write on, or put sticky labels on the media.
Always burn at less than maximum speed. Note the read speed of the drive you are using, and try to burn at less than that read speed.
Joliet and UDF are more commonly read by PC operating systems. You can get some of these formats read by Software Architects Read DVD:

Use ISO, Mac Files and Folders, DVD or Photo CD formats for best Mac compatibility.

  • MBP i5 does not read DVD

    Hi there ,
my new MPB does not read DVD´s which have been burnt by others than my Computer (MBP). It alway states that the dvd is empty, which is not true.
Can anybody help or do I have use my apple care protection plan?
DVD´s that I have burnt myself work well......
Thank you very much for your help!
    Oliver

thank you for your reply. the problem is, that, when using any other pc than a mac, it will read the dvd.
I just connected an external transcend dvd drive with the same dvd that worked with a pc and my MBP still says "empty dvd without title" (translated from German to English).
I do not understand why it does not work with the mac....
    do you have another hint?
    thank you.

  • IMac G5 cant read and write DVD-R

Hi. I have iMac G5 1.9 with Superdrive MATSHITADVD-R UJ-846 with Firmware Revision: FA0G. Everything was OK, I was able to burn DVD-R and DVD+R too, but now Superdrive ejects all DVD-R disks. I cant burn it, I cant read it. DVD+R are working correctly.
System Profile is saying, that I can burn DVD-R and DVD+R:
    D-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL
but everythime I try it, the disk is ejected.
What is a problem? Can anybody help please.
    Thank you.

    To Apple Discussions!
Make sure you have enough storage space to burn.
Make sure the DVDs are not scratched, smudged and/or dirty.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50448 How to Handle and Clean CD and DVD Discs
If your drive needs cleaning, cleaning kits can be purchased from any store that sells CD/DVDs.
Also, check your Mac OS Help Menu for troubleshooting tips. In the search field type dvd.
You can also open up the "Utilites Folder">Disk Utility.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the black ? mark inside the purplecircle.
The help window will open up.
Enter dvd in the search field.

  • My MBP read DVD/CD but NOT Mac osX installation DVD (tiger or Leopard)

    Hi,
I read a lot of discussion but I didn't find the same problem.
So I have a MBP 15", 2.16Ghz intel core duo, and 2 Go RAM.
I have the 10.5.8 version installed, and I want to erase the disk and do a re-install of 10.5 because I've got some bugs :
    - my MBP starts really slowly (about 15min),
    - it bugs when I suspend the activity (black screen, nothing works... I have to push the "ON" button a longtime to stop the mac, )
    - and other ponctual bugs.
The problem is that my MBP don't read the installation DVD (leopard or even Tiger).
It reads the DVD, I heard that the DVD turns, but after 3/4 try, the MBP ejects the DVD.
But It reads Blank CD, DVD (many zone)... Only the installation DVD is not reading.
    I've already try :
-to begin in safemode (with SHIFT button => it is not ok)
    - to push "C" key" at the restart (it's not ok, the MBP eject before blue screen.. it seems that the MBP is waiting to eject the install DVD to start)
    - to create an other account (not ok)
    - to restart the V/P RAM 5 times (not ok)
So, Is there a solution ? If the Mac can read sometimes CD or movie DVD, that mean that the otpical drive isn't broken...
    I'm waiting your help
(sorry if there's some english mistakes !)

So, I've tried to start in target disc mod with a firewire.... Not lucky, I can read in the "information System" that my firewire is not recognized. It's weird because I can charge my ipod with firewire, but the target mode doesn't work !!!
    message in french :
    Bus FireWire :
Attention : Impossible de répertorier les périphériques FireWire.
(average Translate = impossible to index firewire's peripherals)
Do you have some solutions... I still not re-install MAC OSX... and I haven't an external HD (not in shop too !!)

  • Cannot read CD-Rs but can read DVDs

    I cant understand this...
Regardless or not if a CD-R is factory burned, burned by myself (in the past)or is unburned - my computer cannot read the disc and spits it out. Any kind of DVD I put in there it reads fine. I am running 10.5.4. The funny thing is, they did work... after i initially installed the system i used some of the CDs to install apps. Any thoughts?
PS: The CD work fine on my other machines and none of them are scratched.
This is what my system has to say about the factory drive:
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E:
    Firmware Revision: ZA0E
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds

I have been reading these forums for a while. I have the exact same computer drive and firmware on my MBP. I read that the issue is the drive (however this was last year and can't source the info, but I did a lot of research on the subject, just never acted on it). The MBP I have also had a bad battery as well, and Apple replaced it because they admitted that a large series of MBPs were installed with this bad battery, just like Apple put in a bad drive. If your computer is still under warranty, I would take it to Apple's Genius Bar and they can run check to see if it falls under Apples' "recall" computers and they should replace it. They did that for my battery.
However I never did the drive because I assumed they would have to hold my computer to do it and I couldn't give it up since it was my computer I used to work on my MBA.

It's probable that the CD 'side' of the combo drive has failed.  That you cannot boot from the recovery CD is pretty much proof of the failure.

  • How to make MSI D16 (MS8216S) read DVD+RW disks

    Greetings
I have MSI D16 drive, for the last 6 months. When I found out that it cant read the DVD+RW disks, I replaced it with the NEC Drive.
Since MSI havent released nothing since 2003. Why was this drive in strores in 2004?
Is there some beta firmware for this drive, so that it can read DVD+RW disks?
    Best regards

I think your question is mainly directed on MSI with regards to the release of BIOSes. This is a mainly user to user forum help so here's how you can contact MSI.
