MBP Clamshell Mode - DVI to TV Adapter - Front Row Works - But No Video?

Hi all,
Have picked up an Apple DVI to TV adapter for my MB Pro. Have successfully got it to work in clamshell mode displaying Front Row on the TV without the external Mouse or keyboard.
However, it will not play videos or movies on the TV.
If I keep the lid open, it will play the video/movie on both displays as hoped. However, when I close the lid, all other Front Row stuff works - but no video picture! Is this some sort of overlay issue? How can I fix this? I do NOt want to burn my LCD when using it this way - would be a waste.
Please pass on any thoughts!
Thanks,
Stu

I also have this exact same problem. A little annoying since I have just spent $A35 on the mini dvi to dvi adapter and another $A50 on a good quality DVI cable. My LCD tv is set to millions of colors so that is not the issue.
I have a 2.0Ghz Core2Duo Macbook. A quick google search If anyone knows how to fix it I'd be very grateful.

  • Front Row - Lid Closed - Blank Videos (but with audio)

I hooked my computer up to my TV last night to watch some videos through front row (stupid quicktime and the pro lockout on full screen - talk about penny pinching from Apple!). Front row worked fine if I set it up so that the TV mirrored my laptop display. However, if I tried to run the laptop in lid closed mode with the TV as my main/only monitor everything would work except for the videos. They would be black while retaining the audio. For example, the little preview movies shown in the selection menu were black as was the movie when you played it.
Is this a known bug? Is there a fix? (Obviously I can run it more or less similarly with mirroring and my main screen dimmed as I did.)

i'm having the same issue. The video i tried was purchased from the iTunes music store. i see no preview of the video and no video is played on screen however audio is present. the same problem also occurs when trying to watch a movie trailer via movie trailer front row interface. All Front Row graphics are seen, only video is a problem. I can open and play back the video without problems in Quicktime Pro. (fullscreen)
The video output is 1280x720 sent to a samsung tv using a built in profile with overscan disabled.

Try a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. When the screen goes blank power On again in the normal way.] It is absolutely/appsolutely safe!

  • Does front row work

does front row work with mountain lion

No, it is incompatible and has been withdrawn by Apple.
If you read the other 150 threads on the subject in this forum you may find a workaround.

  • Front Row worked well in Lion. What about in Mountain Lion?

    No comment at this stage.

    Hi there Lostmyshoe,
Yes, Front Row worked in Lion after reinstalling.
    See the following:
How to install Front Row on OS X Lion
One feature of prior versions of OS X that Apple removed in Lion was FrontRow, which some people used regularly to view photos and videos. Here is how to reinstall ... ~ by Topher Kessler

  • Does Front Row work with PowerPC G4?

Does Front Row work with PowerPC G4? Where can I get it?

There are ways, but it has limited ablities since you don't have the IR based remote needed. There is a "hack" of sorts which tricks front row to install on other Macs. I have it on my Power Mac G4 and my ibook as well. Just do a google search.
There is nothing illegal about the hack since you download the free update from the apple website. All the hack does it make the installer think you have a iMac or Macbook Pro.

  • MBP Clamshell Mode via DVI LG Monitor

    Hi
I know this one has been done to death but.......
I have a MBP 2.2SR and yesterday I got a LG 22" monitor. Originally I tried to connect via DVI, usual process
Ensure MBP is connected to the mains
    Connect Display
    Ensure Keyboard is working
    Close Lid on MBP
Use space bar to wake up.
This doesnt work, the screen is in MBP resolution and not the LG screen and after a couple of seconds it goes to sleep.
However, I have tried a DVI to HDMI cable and this works fine.
Problem is I also want to connect my iMac to my LG display (2nd screen), again by DVI and this will not work.
    Any ideas?

So the DVI input is not working when attempting to drive it by either the MBP or the iMac? That sounds like a problem with the LG's DVI input if it isn't working with two different Macs. Either that or the DVI cable is bad (even more likely).
You are switching the LG to the DVI input, correct? Or does it auto-switch between inputs depending on if it detects the presence of video or not?

  • My Fall 2009 system DVI output to our HDTV doesn't include audio.  Connecting the Macbook headphone output to the TV's RCA plugs works if TV is in AV (PC) mode, but no picture.  DVI to HDMI adapter to TV works fine for picture, but no audio.

My Fall 2009 model Macbook Pro DVI output apparently doesn't include audion.  Adapting DVI to HDMI works with new LG TV, but doesn't provide sound.  Connecting the Macbook headphone output to the TV's RCA jacks give sound with the TV in AV (PC) mode, but no video.  Is there a fix for this?  Search for a DVI to HDMI adapter that includes a plug for the headphone jack comes up empty, so far.

DVI has never included audio, sorry.
There is also no DVI->HDMI adapter including a plug for audio; such thing cannot work without quite a bit of electronic extra effort.
Instead of much bla-bla, why don't you tell the exact TV model, and we'll try to come up with a solution?
BTW, no home theater AV receiver present, correct? Sound to come from the TV, correct?

  • Using external Display via Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter does'nt work

    Hey Guys,
    i recently bought a mini-dvi-to-vga adapter.
When I plug it into my macbook and connect it to my 19" external TFT, the MB recognizes the TFT as [Medion] MD30219PH but the display stays blank (no matter if i choose mirroring mode or extended desktop)...
Already changed the Hz-Rate between 59.9, 60 and 75 Hertz and the Resolution also... but nothing happens.
In extended Desktop mode i can even slide the cursor into the area where the display is supposed to be...
    Hope u can help me
    thx

From what I've been told, using the computer's video output isn't outputting a true NTSC picture. I was told when talking about how the Macbook Pros dropped the S-vdieo port that I shouldn't use that anyways, but rather to go the firewire route. THat was actually converts the video source to true NTSC instead of taking a computer output to a TV. While I have no doubt that it works, I'm willing to bet that you'll see a noticeable difference between the G5 S-video and your MB using firewire. Most consumer camcorders from the past several years do digital (firewire) to analogue (NTSC) conversion, so you probably don't even need a new box.

  • MBP - Playing music from my Ipod with Front Row?

So that I don't clutter up my MBP HD with a bunch of mp3 files, I simply connect my ipod via its USB cable to my MBP when I want to listen to music.
However, when I click on Front Row, and select my albums to play, it doesnt show anything at all. It only wants to show items in the Library folder.
Is there a way to make Front Row play from my ipod or do I really have to have everything in the Library folder instead?
    Thanks

Anyone know how to import songs into library without
    copying files?
    Thks!
I'm not sure this is totally right but here it goes:
First make sure that your settings are for manual addition of songs for your ipod, otherwise when you get to "adding playlists" like I mention below, it will be a nightmare.
You need to have your mp3 files as DATA on your iPod - not just as the songs that regularly play nicely through the iPod. So enable data use, and have all of your songs on the iPod in data mode.
Then what you need to do is open all of your music files. Essentially what will happen is that your iTunes will add them automatically to your library as a LINK to the Data on your iPod. When your ipod is not connected, the files will not be playable and will have the ! next to them.
Place all of the songs (which are now really links) into appropriate play lists.
This, in my mind sounds like it works. All I remember is that when you have an MP3 on your desktop, and double click on it, it adds it to the library from the Desktop location.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE "ADD A COPY OF MUSIC TO ITUNES FOLDER UNCHECKED" under advanced settings, or your music will be copied to your computer.
Good luck, I hope this works for you, it would seem that it does.

  • DVI to ADC adapter doesn't work

    Greetings folks,
I have an Apple DVI to ADC adapter going to a Formac 17" ADC display or alternatively an Apple 17" LCD ADC display. The displays do not function with either my MacBook Pro or my MacBook. I can't figure out which the Macs are having a problem with, the displays or the adapter. It all works fine with my PowerBook G4 and both of my PowerMac G4's. Also, regular DVI and VGA displays work fine with the MacBook Pro and the MacBook.
I have talked with tech support and they have not been able to find a solution. I will bring the adapter to my Apple store to see if they can determine the problem.

Okay, here's an update: the DVI to ADC adapter does work with the Apple displays that I have tried, but it won't work with the Formac. I have tried multiple time to contact them, but to no avail... they don't even respond to threats of posting my opinion of them, which is this:
DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM FORMAC! They make quality products, but their customer service is a big time joke! They won't take care of you.

  • Apple DVI to ADC Adapter - DID NOT WORK !!!!

I have a PowerMac G4 Model M5183 and I wanted to connect it to a 20" Apple Cinema Display that I got.
Because the display output on the computer is different than the monitor, I bought the Apple DVI to ADC Adapter that everyone talks about on the support pages.
Problem is, that the start button on the monitor, will not start the computer. And if I start the computer with the ON/OFF button on it, the monitor comes on after a few seconds, the "Apple" appears and the wheel starts spinning....but the monitor goes black after about 25 seconds. I hooked comp. to a Viewsonic via the DVI port and the computer works fine. I hooked the monitor to a G4 with the ADC port and the monitor works fine. AND, I took the first Apple DVI to ADC Adapter back to the store, thinking it was bad...second one didn't change anything.
    HELP!!!!!

Computer will not start with button on display.
When you use the power button on the display, the start signal is transmitted via the USB bus to the computer. The DVI interface on the computer does not have the required USB signals to start the computer. If that is a requirement, you need a graphics card with ADC connector, which requires a computer with the 25 Volt power supply.
... the monitor goes black after about 25 seconds.
That is about the time the System uses the stored Display Preference to re-initialize the display. It may mean the stored Display Resolution Preference has the wrong values for this display to sync up. You can start up from another source and attempt to delete the preference file, or start up using another monitor and set the screen resolution to something really simple, like 640 by 480.
Your Mac cannot query the display about its capabilities, because its usual method, across the built-in USB connection, is not available. So it must use the stored value instead.

  • Front Row doesn't show video podcasts

Here's the problem for some reason Front Row does not see the Video Podcasts that are on my MBP anymore. Although it did before. Now when I go into Video Podcasts I get an error telling that I don't have any video podcasts in my iTunes library even though I do. It can be seen in iTunes, and I can listen to it in Front Row if I go into music section, but for some reason it is not recognized anymore in as a Video Podcast in Front Row.
Anyone knows how to fix this, or having problems with this?

I have the same problem. I think it may have something to do with the size of the video podcast. Have you tried downloading any podcasts for Apple TV and seeing if they work?

  • Front Row 2.0 and video files stored in iPhoto Library

When i play a photo slideshow in front row 2.0 (don't remember how it was under frant row 1.0), the videos imported besides still pictures in my iPhoto library aren't played, and not even showed as low res thumbnails (as it does when playing a slideshow from iPhoto ; well, i'm not so sure now i write it). Instead, you only have a black screen as long as the duration of the movie !
Would be nice if Front Row could play movie files imported in the iPhoto Library ... or, at least, skip them !
At the present time, i will be forced to remove movie files from my iPhoto and export them to my videos folder... (one more operation to execute manually when importing photos from my p&s camera via iphoto)

Organizing related files with Smart Folders
This also applies for 10.5 Leopard.
If you open Automator (Applications) and choose Library >> Files and folders >> Find Finder items and draw it to the right side of the window. Now you can search the whole computer or just your user folder for example (from the drop down menu). Then you can make further adjustments like find .avi (look at the image)
    http://personal.inet.fi/koti/kimi/automator_alias.png
Then you draw the new aliases to the window and choose what folder it saves the aliases too, in my case my Movies-folder (Elokuvat is Movies in finnish). After that you press Run and it saves the aliases. Easy!
The original files are still located inside the iPhoto Library and the Movies-folder just contains the aliases.
