MBP crash during 10.4.11 update, KERNEL PANIC, WON'T BOOT, HELP.
Attempted update to 10.4.11 via Software Update. Machine crashed (screen went black, nothing made the machine responsive). Forced power down, powered back up, "need to restart computer". Great.
Disk Warrior rebuild, permissions repair, restart, KERNEL PANIC. Boot from OSX install disc and am greeted with "unable to install software on this computer" giving two options to restart or select startup disk. No matter, ran disk utility, repaired disk, repaired permissions, restart via Macintosh HD, KERNEL PANIC!!!!!!!!!!! UGH.
Now what?? I can use target disk mode to backup contents of computer to another but I really don't want to go to the extent of reinstalling OSX and reloading my data to the machine from the backup. Any ideas? Need to figure this out before tomorrow, any help is appreciated.
Assuming this doesn't resolve the issue, what's the procedure for reinstalling OSX AND keeping my data intact? Can backup everything using target disk mode, just don't know how to re-load it once reinstalled.
Or even if there's a way to reinstall OSX without having to backup the data and re-load it. Thanks

Kernel panic on first boot after 10.6.8 update
Hi,
Here are the fact:
1) I systematically get a kernel panic on first boot after an attempt to update to 10.6.8 (was able to revert to 10.6.7 using Time Machine; now I'm running my tests on a clone). While doing the update, there are NO USB connexion to my laptop, nor ethernet connexion. Only the power cable.
2) I DO NOT use the software Hands Off which is known to cause such an issue
3) I've tested this on two different hard drive (with a clone of my system)
4) I disabled all third app on startup just to be sure this wasn't a conflict problem
5) After a kernel panic, I'm always able to boot in safe mode
6) I did try both the normal update and the combo update (same result)
Now I'm kinda stuck. The next test I'm thinking performing is to update while in safe mode. But I don't know if it will help.
And yes, my permissions are all fine. Any idea how to troubleshoot this? I believe I need to be in 10.6.8 in order to update to Lion?
Many thanks in advance!
ParneixHi,
Sorry about that. Below you'll find the log of my latest kernel panic.
I did follow instructions suggested by user "ds store". The only "kext" file that I've got (by running the commands in the Terminal) was related to the software LittleSnitch. I downloaded it again in order to run the uninstaller. I'll try again to update to 10.6.8 under those conditions and report here.

IPad Air 2 crashes during 8.1.3 update.
My iPad Air 2 keeps crashing and I can't get on it after I have done the update for 8.3. For example, I have done the update and on iTunes it says I have, but when it comes to re-starting the iPad and going through the settings you have to after you have done an update and re-logging in with iCloud it crashes and doesn't work. It starts saying it is doing the update gets halfway through then stops, I then login and get to the apple home screen where my apps are and it crashes and starts doing the update again. This means I am just stuck on the Hello page where i fill my details in.
Any advise would be great.jimtownrc,
Resetting a device will not erase data. A "restore" however, is the process of deleteting everything and taking the device back to factory settings.
Here is an article that will explain how to update using a computer:
Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support
Update your device using iTunes
If you can’t update wirelessly, or if you want to update with iTunes, follow these steps:
Install the latest version of iTunes on your computer.
Plug in your device to your computer.
In iTunes, select your device.
In the Summary pane, click Check for Update.
Click Download and Update.
If you don't have enough free space to update using iTunes, you'll need to delete content manually from your device.

10.6.4 Combo Update - Kernel Panic on 1st Gen Mac Pro with 8GB and ATI 4870
Hi,
I installed the 10.6.4 combo update last night and now my system constantly kernel panics. It was fine with 10.6.3 for months and never kernel panicked.
I have 4 x 2GB FB-Dimms and a ATI 4870 card.
The system is also only showing one display and I can force it to kernel panic by going to system preferences and selecting 'Detect Displays'.
Anyone got any suggestions before I reinstall back to 10.6.3?
Thanks
PaulHey guys. I have got a new Macbook Pro 13" model and I am getting kernel panics. I've been trying to partition the drive for Boot Camp and after I updated yesterday (to 10.6.4) i've been getting the kernel panic sign. Also, when I boot from my Snow Leopard disk to go into Disk Utility to repair the permissions (I opened Onyx and on the SMART check it said the permissions needed to be reset) I get a kernel panic and it crashes! So at the moment i've just backed up my work and I am panicking myself as I have no idea what to do from here.
Any help would be appreciated! -
MBP Early 2013 somewhat random but recurring kernel panic
Hi-I just bought an MBP early 2013 model. I've had it just over a week and have had 8 kernel panics. They appear to be happening when the computer is turning on - either cold (from being shutoff) or waking from sleep (however it doesn't do it everytime it wakes or boots). I've got all the software updates installed (excepting Mavericks...I don't plan on upgrading to it for a while). Here is the latest panic log. It appears to be something with the video card, but I'm a relatively new mac user, so I could be completely off. The video card it came with is the Intel HD Graphics 4000. I plan on taking it back to where I bought it to get it looked at, but I'm curious if you guys have any thoughts on it.
Thanks

It seems that your graphics card is causing the panics, or it MIGHT be your logic board (highly unlikely). What i suggest doing is running apple hardware test. to do this, shut down your computer and hold the D key on startup. If that doesn't work, try option(alt)+D, the rest of the process is simple -
10.6.2 Update kernel panics iMac
HELP!
A mate of mine upgraded his iMac to 10.6.2 on Friday and now it won't boot up. It gets as far as showing the apple logo but then shows a load of text detailing the error:
something along the lines of:
"Version mis-match between Kernel and CPU PM" then a bit further down it says "Mac OS Version: Not yet set".
We've tried everything to get it back up and running again without reinstalling it. We've tried zapping PRAM (has no effect), running AHT (passed all test with no errors), repair disk (completes with no errors), repair permissions (no errors), running into single user mode (which fails), booting into Safe Mode (which fails), booting from install DVD (works and can reinstall from here - but we don't want to do that just yet).
Has anyone else had this problem? If so, what can I do to fix it?
Regards,

This may not help, but if that computer has a FireWire port and you have access to a second Mac that also has a FireWire port, I'd download the 10.6.2 "combo" updater to the working Mac, put the sick Mac into "target disk mode" (by holding down the "T" key while it is booting), connect the two Macs with a FireWire cable, and apply the updater to the sick Mac. -
Kernel update: kernel panic, I cant fix
HI
last nigth I do Pacman -Syu, but in the morning i cant boot:

mount: Mounting none on /new_root /initrd failed no such file or directory

initrd /initramfsfs-beyond.img
I try to edit the grub in "root=/dev/hda3" for 'root=/dev/sda3', no results.
My laptop is my work machine, i lost all morning try to fix, i have a sencible data too in my HD..
any suggestion or help must be apreciated
thanks in advanceYou upgraded from 2.6.17 to 2.6.19 by any chance?
When you update the Archlinux kernel to 2.6.18, make sure
that you changed the initrd setting in your bootloader
(/boot/grub/menu.lst or /etc/lilo.conf). The filename is
kernel26.img instead of initrd26.img for kernel26 and
kernel26beyond.img for kernel26beyond. For troubleshooting
and advanced setup, see

Just by enabling the airport express card, the above error fills up my panic.log. Now I wonder what triggers the bug? Because I rebooted several times after the update. One thing I did see was the signal strength going less strong in the past days. Since today I cannot use it at all.panic(cpu 0 caller 0x000A8800): Uncorrectable machine check: pc = 000000003931288C
That is an uncorrectablehardwarecheck type panic and the Program Counter (address: 000000003931288C) on CPU matchs with the closest value "com.apple.iokit.AppleAirPort2(405.1)@0x392f4000" followed by a typical events in relation with an AirPort card logical failure:
AsyncSrc = 0000000000000000, CoreFIR = 0000000000000000
L2FIR = 0000000000000000, BusFir = 0000000000000000
There is a problem on async program in the computer and the connecting network node with Mach port (=socket)-- not synchronized by a common timing signal. An exception problem also occurs on the core/L2 cache and bus Fault Isolation Register (FIR) on the CPU.
More importantly, you will please see CVE-2006-6292 (under review) :
http://www.cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-6292
The Apple should be working with it. So here is my recommendation:
1. Data backup.
2. Erase and Install by Zero Out Data for Security Options...
( This is for your risk contorol.)
3. Install Mac OS X 10.4.x to update to 10.4.8.
4. Perform the major updates except the AirPort Extream firmware. -
MBP 13" - sporadic gray screen of death/kernel panic?
Hi all,
I've had my MacBook Pro 13" for about a month, and for three of those four weeks, it's been crashing sporadically every few days. It's typically the same. The gray kernel panic screen will wipe down for no apparent reason, and I have to hard restart. I ran the Apple Hardware Test (both quick and extended) and it found no problems. I'm at a loss, especially as I bought the computer in a different country to where I'm now living. If I post one of the error logs, would anyone be able to point me in the right direction?
Cheers
SamThanks for the help guys.
It didn't happen from day one. As far as I can remember, things started going awry when I closed the lid and put it to sleep with about 40 min to an hour of battery life left. When I tried to wake it a few hours later, the battery was completely dead. I haven't had that problem with the battery again, but the kernel panics started around the same time and have been sporadically occurring ever since.
I uninstalled nearly every piece of third party software at the time, and have been ditching other essentials as they've kept occurring. Right now the only third party app I still have installed is Firefox, and I'm only using that because the one constant I can see across the crashes is that Safari is running every time.
I ran the disk utility a couple of times, getting the OK each time on Verify Disk, and some permissions fixed both times I ran Repair Disk Permissions. I've had a couple of kernel panics since I did this.
Here's the latest log from the console. In the mean time, I'll try erasing and reinstalling like you suggest.
Many thanks ahead of time.

Kernel Panic in Japan - Please Help!
Hi all,
I just recently moved to Japan and my wife and I just bought iPhones 2 days ago. Before the Kernel message came, I was getting messages on the computer that read that 'sync' something was having trouble and did I want to report the problem?... etc. I assumed that it had something to do with mobile me which we just started working with a few days ago. So I wondered if I needed to update the software. I started to do so and it asked me to restart. After I restart it tells me that it needs a start up disk or something like that... what I usually do at this point is restart the computer and hold down the option key, which is what I did... then something new happened. This popped up:

So here I am. 5 days old in Japan (I'll be here for 3 years). I'm hoping that I'll get some info here on how to fix it myself. Otherwise I have to take it into the Tokyo store which is very very far away.
Thanks for looking,
ChrisHI Chris,
Kernel panics are sometimes causes by hardware issues. Probably a good idea at this point to check the boot disk for errors.
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
Select your disk, and click First Aid.
Click Verify Disk.
If the disk needs repairs, do one of the following:
Insert your Mac OS X Install disc in your computer’s optical drive or an optical drive connected to your computer, and then restart your computer. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the progress indicator, which looks like a spinning gear.
Follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it, choose Utilities > Disk Utility, click First Aid, and then click Repair Disk.
Checking a hard disk to see if it’s going to fail
You can check the health of your hard disk by checking its Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.) status in Disk Utility. Most disk drives include S.M.A.R.T. hardware. Developed by IBM, S.M.A.R.T. hardware allows hard disks to test themselves for potential problems.
Starting up in “safe mode” may help you to diagnose problems you’re having with your computer.
To start up in safe mode:
Shut down your computer and wait 10 seconds.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key.
You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after your hear the startup tone, but not before.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator (spinning gear).
To leave safe mode, restart the computer normally without holding down any keys during startup.

If the boot disk appears to be ok, you could try installing the 10.5.6 combo update available here;

They were linked to (a) AudioHijack program, and (b) Max 5 (an Ableton live-related program) - so I deleted all the files I could find for each of them, but the report generated still included the above antries - then I re-installed OSX using the install disc that came with my Macbook Pro.
The entries seem to have disappeared, but I'm still getting crashes, especially when I try to open Time Machine. It's driving me mad and I've got work to be getting on with AAARRGH!
If anyone can please help/throw some light on this, it'd be most appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
TD.

By the way, I have a Macbook Pro (mid 2010) -
Just installed updates to version 10.6.7 . There is also a WD Passport 500GB ext. hard drive attached (used as time machine), and recently added a WD MyBook 2TB ext. hard drive for storage - both via a Laser 7-port USB hub. Not sure if either of these would come into the equation when considering the frequent crashes, but I thought it might be useful information for those in the know...Hey KingPro, I feel ya man. I've been getting the same issue and am also going nuts. There's not much help around about this one. I also posted here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2766689?threadID=2766689&tstart=0 but I think the OP managed to get a replacement. How I wonder.
I have a mid 2010 MacBook Pro 2.4GHz i5, and I sent it in to the Apple store twice on a clean install, and after extended diagnostics, they reported nothing wrong and refused to help any further. They guy I spoke to said that if it's a software issue, then it's the user's responsibility and how they use their mac. I told him that when someone buys a computer, they are expected to be able to use it without any hitches, but apparently he can't cover for anything not Apple endorsed. So Apple doesn't cover common sense. They guy went on to suggest that some websites for example, might be the cause.
I really am lost now, I just want the crashing to stop.
Here are some of my Kernel Panics, the most recent one being the whole log:

Kernel Panic That Just Started - HELP?
So this kernel panic has happened twice now, once about two weeks ago, and once just a few minutes ago. Wouldn't really bother me but it happened during an online test and now I'm screwed It basically just crashes my computer to black screen and have to hard reboot to get it to work.
Here is the log:

Action: Apple Security Update / Reaction: System Won't Boot!
Does anyone have an opinion/suggestion about this?
Ever since a failed Security Update, my computer will not boot. I did post my question and listed troubleshooting in a separate post.
Previous Post
I searched and did every suggestion I could find. I can browse my files in Terminal and in disk utility, so my hard drive is spinning, and although I don't dispute the fact that my hard drive could be on its way out (my iMac is 3yrs old), if it was done, I wouldn't be able to see these files.
My question is what is going on with these security updates? Through my searches it is always the same story in that this happens after a failed (and sometimes successful) Security Update. I have also seen the suggestion to restart the computer BEFORE installing the updates, which I should have known and is a great idea, but if this is such a big problem, why doesn't the security update prompt you to restart the computer first?
I am obviously frustrated with this situation. I have backed up my info, so I am not too worried about that, but this issue with the Security Updates seems to happen to a lot of people, and unfortunately, most of them go out and buy new hard drives because some unknowledgeable (or lazy) techie said that their hard drive crashed. There has to be a reason for this. The Security Updates are somehow corrupting files, and I refuse to believe that the only solution to this problem is to either buy a new hard drive or an archive and install the OS. Am I wrong about this? There are enough of us that have this very same issue, to which we deserve a viable solution and not some inevitably useless key strokes during startup.
In my opinion this has everything to do with the Apple Security Update and if it is so important that we, as users, restart our machine before installing these updates, then this should be mentioned or prompted by the Security Update. Apple has dropped the ball with this one. I will continue to search for a solution and will probably end up doing an archive and install. Don't get me wrong, I love my iMac, and for the most part I find the service top notch. It just frustrates me that my problem is not an isolated one, and yet there aren't any feasible solutions.
If anyone has any suggestions and/or comments, I would appreciate all of them.

Kernel Panic ... boot issues
Hi ... I have a Mac Pro 3,1 intel 2.8 ghz
For many weeks now i have been experiencing kernel panics. Randomly. Different things running ect... lately when booting the computer it fails... sometimes only gray screen... sometimes file folder w/ question mark.... sometimes Apple logo and that's it.... sometimes it works.
so
I think my hard drive is failing. I've ordered a new one and will install it. I was planning on taking my Snow Leopard disc and installing osx on the new drive then do software updates to get osx current... as opposed to using time machine to completely back up the new drive.... then use time machine to restore the rest of the bad drive.
my assumptions are that if the kernel panics are caused by something bad in osx, the software re install will remove that issue. A new drive obviously fixes a bad one if that was the issue.
I'm guessing If i boot with the osx disc in the computer it will boot from that disc. once running i'll have the ability to detect an un formatted drive and get it formatted using disc utility. Then choose to install osx on that new drive... not quite sure how to make it the boot drive though.
Used Macs for years but they just work... so this is a new adventure for me! lol
What are your all's thoughts here. Think I'm on the right track? Right plan?John White7 wrote:

John: Since You've bought a new HD:
I'd go ahead, install it in a different drive bay from original.
Do exactly as you planned and do a clean install of Snow Leopard on the new HD.
Try booting off the new drive (holding the option key during boot boot up, will allow you to select the new drive)
+not quite sure how to make it the boot drive though.+
Once Sys.Software Use the "StartUp Disk" panel in System Preferences. Your mac will now boot off the new drive Until you change that setting.
If the first boot off the new drive works - You were right: problem was with the old drive Tho u still don't know for sure if prob is (Software or Hardware)
At this point, you may wish to reformat and do a clean install Snow Leop on original drive.
I've never used Time Machine, but If the old drive is now working properly (test for awhile) - it was a software issue - the corruption could have been anywhere, so I'd hesitate to restore much other than your data (IS THIS POSSIBLE with Time Machine?)
Regardless, I'd plan on using the NEW drive as the boot drive (If it's a decent quality, it's likely to outlive the old one) even if the old one seems ok. -
Having Kernel Panic issues and need help
So about 6 months ago I had a HD crash, I restored it through disk utility and reloaded from my last time machine backup. Ever since then my computer would turn off randomly and I didn't know why, looked into it a bit more and thought the HD was bad so replaced it with a 500Gb SSD. When I got that I used a HD clone to copy the drive over and the problem still continued. I noticed it was when I would try and do something that might be a little taxing on the system like open a big program or stream something with other things open. All things that might stress the system, but nothing out of the ordinary and never had an issue for the years I had the computer before the crash. I looked into the issue more and have tried to trouble shoot the issue and this is what I have done/found thus far.
~Replaced HD to a SSD HD with no improvement
~Put new SSD in a totally different MCB and the issues still stand
~Reloaded Mavericks on the HD and it is still happening (Had an issue when trying to erase the HD in recovery, Disk Utility said it could unmount the disk when I clicked the drive, but if I clicked that name of the drive indented under neath it worked)
I have included my latest panic log in hopes for some help. The new MacBook Pro that I put my HD in I got second hand and said they were having some issues with it, but it only happened when they upgraded to Yosemite. There was nothing wrong with it previous, so I think I eliminated the possibility of it being a Hardware issue, but not 100% on that. Thanks for the help, Chris

I pulled the SSD out and put it into an external enclosure and was able to fully erase the drive through disk utility. From there I used the bootable disk that came with the computer which put snow leopard on. From there I upgrade through the app store to Mavericks, I used the computer all night with no issues or reboots at all, was finally able to run a Hardware diagnostic with nothing showing up there after the extended test. I am now running Mavericks and am transferring data off my external, but only the essentials such as music and pictures with fresh installs of all applications. Everything was going great... until about 5 min ago. As I was transferring about 250Gb of music I opened a browser and had a kernel panic shutdown. I have included the log, hoping it was just a fluke thing, but don't have any faith at this point
