MBP creaking issue

So what's the deal with this? I've heard about people exchanging their MBP's and still getting this annoying sound. Is apple ignoring this issue? After spending so much money on Apple products I'm really getting disappointed in their quality, there is no way I would recommend anyone to purchise this laptop.

i've tried this, and Apple say they can't because it's a "sensory issue" and there's nothing techincally wrong with the laptop.

  • This is a workaround for the MBP wireless issue

There have been many topics on the MBP wireless issues already, but I thought some people might find this workaround helpful.
Firstly, my system is a 2.2Ghz MBP, running 10.4.10, and also airport extreme update 2007-04. I am using an airport express base station. My previous Powerbook never had any wireless problems, so I really couldn't blame the basestation for the MBPs poor wireless.
Warning - The workaround requires a little bit of work in the terminal. A little bit of understanding of how networks work is assumed here as well. So it is probably not for everyone ...
What I have observed - whenever the MBP loses connection, the airport basestation IP and MAC addresses are missing from the ARP table.
    - To view the ARP table, type (in a terminal window) arp -a.
So, when the MBP wireless hangs, open up the terminal and type that in.
Do a Cntrl-C if the arp command is hanging and not returning anything.
In normal situations, a list of IP addresses and MAC addresses will show up.
As others have already noted, clicking on the airport icon in the menubar, will magically bring the wireless back to life. When this happens, the ARP table also gets magically populated correctly. Coincidence? I think not!
So, the workaround is to store a PERMANENT entry in the ARP table for the airport basestation IP and MAC address. In my case, I can use the Airport Utility software to confirm what the basestation IP and MAC addresses are (note MAC address = Airport ID in Airport Utility). I found the basestation IP=10.0.1.1 and the MAC=0:11:24:07:d7:f
To create a permanent ARP table entry for my airport basestation, I opened up a terminal window, and did the following -
    1) login to my administrator account
    2) type in the following command sudo arp -s 10.0.1.1 0:11:24:7:d7:f
    3) type in my administrator password to authorise the change
    4) type in (to confirm the changes have been made) arp -a
    5) logout of my administrator account (from the terminal)
Ever since I did this, my MBP wireless performance has been flawless.
Note, if you shutdown or restart your computer, the arp entry disappears. This is ok for me as I hardly ever power down my MBP. As insurance I have added an account startup item to remind me to do the arp table entry.
This workaround is great for me because I don't have a need to use multiple wireless networks. It might not be practical for people who roam around onto different networks.
Give it a go and see if it works for you.

OK, after some further experimenting, I changed the multicast rate on my airport express. It was set at 6Mbps, and I changed it to 2Mbps.
I have read that the default multicast rate for previous 802.11g versions of Airport basestations is actually 2mbps. Excellent results so far !! I have set up a terminal command to continuously ping my airport router address every 15 sec, and there have been virtually no dropped packets so far over many hours.
    ping -i 15 10.0.1.1
Interestingly, in Apple's Airport Admin software in my MBP there is no option to set the rate at less than 6Mbps (!!!!), so I had to use the Windows XP version of Airport admin software to make this change using a windows machine. Using the XP software you can set the muticast rate as low as 1Mbps.
If you are using Apples airport admin software (Tiger and Leopard) and you commit any sort of change in settings, the multicast rate will be re-set at a minimum of 6Mbps. My understanding of the multicast rate is that setting it too high is similar to shrinking the coverage area of the basestation, and limiting access only to clients who can transmit at the required multicast rate.
So my new theory is that the dropouts are caused by the MBP dropping off the airport due to not being able to achieve the set multicast rate. (this could be due to factors such as low signal strength, excessive interference or noise).
If you are using Apples more recent Airport admin software, you are having a minimum 6mbps muticast rate set, and this might be too high for your particular environment.
    Just a theory.
(oh yeah, I enabled interference robustness on the MBP and the basestation just for good measure)

  • Mid '09 MBP bootup issue - flashing folder; possibly a fried drive?

    Hi All,
This is my first post here. Today my 14 month old MBP 15-incher froze in the middle of some casual browsing/iTunes listening and decided to not respond to any mouse or keyboard input. I gave it some time to figure itself out and then after about 5 minutes of nothing, decided to force a shutdown by cutting power (10 second power button hold). Then upon my next boot the computer gives the chime, shows the grey screen (no  logo), does nothing for ca. a minute and a half and then presents me with the glorious flashing questionmark-folder-whatever logo. Just great.
I reset the PRAM (option + command + p + r), tried Safe Booting (shift + boot), tried forcing the laptop to boot into the default os x drive/partition (x + boot), tried booting with GUI boot location selector (option + boot) and, when all mentioned practices failed, inserted a retail copy of snow leopard and booted the machine to the ODD.
Disk Utility confirmed my fears: the main HD has no partitions and the "First Aid" tab can't verify or repair the disk.
Help me out here, guys. Is my drive dead (and all my data gone)? Is this a "directory collapse"-style issue? I had one of those babies a month ago on an '07 white MacBook... a new HDD and two hours of data restoration work for $150 at a local Mac-centric repair shop fixed that issue. But this seems a little more serious.
I was two days away from activating a central Time Machine backup to the home-network-attached 2TB HDD, for both Mac laptops in the household. I was also two days away from getting a Crashplan.com family package (yes, I wanted double backup). Why 2 days from now? Because my Carbon Copy Cloned backup HD (a WD elements 1TB) died a week ago. As in, "started-puffing-out-smoke" died.
    Perfect timing.
    Ideas? Please?
    <Edited by Host>

I also suspect your internal HD has crashed. You can run Apple Hardware Test and then Google any error codes however I believe it's probably gone.
Without any backup yes your data is probably gone, there are data recovery services however they are extremely expensive.
If you purchased AppleCare you can take it an AASP for repair however they probably cannot do a thing about your data. If you are not covered by AppleCare of course the expense will be your however look at this as an opportunity to upgrade the internal HD to something with more storage or is faster.
Once you have the new HD installed you will need the original Snow Leopard Install Disks (or possibly your retail copy of SL) to format the new HD and re-install SL and the iLife applications.

    Good luck,

  • Magsafe/MBP charging issue

My MBP 17" stopped charging. The MBP was running and either I didn't notice the power supply wasn't powering or it failed and let the laptop run completely down. When I tried to power back up I found the power supply wasn't working. Assuming it was bad, I purchased a new Magsafe (85W). It has the newer connector. It didn't work either. So in the course of monkeying around I removed the battery. The green led on the connector lit up. So it seems that now anytime the MBP has been shut off, to get it to chargethe battery or power the computer, i have to remove the battery. I can put it back in and everything is fine until the next go round. I've tried troubleshooting steps like making sure pins on the magsafe aren't stuck and the SMC reset. PRAM too. Anything else to try? And if not is this an issue with the magsafe, the battery or the laptop? FWIW, the old magsafe is still dead although I don't have another computer to try it on. Thanks.

The first thing to try is an SMC reset. Info and instructions here:

  • How I got my MBP heat issue resolved...

Like many MBP users, I too was having heat related issues. I decided to change a few things to see if they actually worked.
    1. When I don't need the full power of the processors, I change my power source in the battery menu to "Better Energy Savings".
    2. I don't run as many dashboard apps and when I find one, I make sure it is an Intel native binary.
    3. I updated the SMC firmware on my Mac.
All three of these chanages have dramatically changed how my MacBook Pro works. I can now place it on my lap without any issue whatsoever.
I hope this works for you too.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Thats a great idea,
why do purchased the MPB, if you reduce the power rating?
Under this conditions the MPB is now slower as the good old one.

  • STILL have MBP audio issues after Bootcamp 3.1

I have a mid-2009 MBP 13" with Snow Leopard, running 32-bit XP Professional with SP3. I just updated to Bootcamp 3.1 after dealing with low audio, robo-voice from the internal microphone, and spooky red light/trackpad nonsense for months. While 3.1 fixed the red light and the trackpad, my audio issues still remain; I get very poor volume on the Windows side and my voice is still distorted, slow and generally crappy when I use the built-in microphone in the microphone test. The mic doesn't work at all in Steam, which is the whole reason I want it. Was 3.1 supposed to fix these audio issues? It doesn't explicitly say so on the download page, but it seems like it's been quite effective for other people, so if it is supposed to fix the audio I suppose I'm going down to the Apple Store.
If 3.1 wasn't a magic bullet, can anyone suggest a fix? I'm pretty fed up by now with this issue. I tried reinstalling the drivers after extracting them from the BC 2.2 update (found that process on these forums), and it did nothing. The link to the New Jersey school's site (another suggestion from the forums) no longer works for whatever reason.
    Thanks!

Use Driver Sweeper and the tips on how to use and troubleshoot
    http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/
You may also want to use Windows Installer Cleanup as I mentioned.
    Also CCleaner can help.
MSCONFIG.exe can lead you to the services and startup items being loaded
Programs control panel of course to uninstall the program
Device Manager to rollback; or uninstall and manage device drivers
Apple installs a number of drivers, services, startupitems so you really have to get familiar with the OS and where/how to manage things.
Windows 7 supports RESTORE POINTS. Use 'em! and set one before just in case (any good installer or update should create a new one but good to have your own), and make sure there is 10-30GB of space for restore points.
System control panel advanced protection -> configure your boot volume settings

  • MBP startup issue

    Hello,
I was wondering if anyone else has run into this or may have some insight. On two separate occasions I've tried powering on my MBP and after hitting the power button it would come on, I could hear the hard drive spinning up, but then it would power off almost immediately. I didn't know about resetting the PRAM or SMC, so I didn't try that. What I ended up doing was holding down the power button until the MBP made a noise and then it would start up ok. So perhaps I inadvertently reset the SMC without realizing it and that fixed the issue? I did not disconnect power or pull the battery when I did it, so I'm not sure.
Has anyone else's MBP exhibited a similar behavior on power on? I guess I'm worried that it might be a hardware issue that should be resolved. It's not something that's a frequent occurrence though.
    Thanks!

I wouldn't drive all the way to an Apple Store, their policies are probably identical to the ones expressed over the phone. I would search for a local Apple Authorized Repair Shop in your area, and bring it there to see if they'll service it. They'll honor your warranty so it will be cost free, and they won't have the tough stipulations that Apple does concerning your warranty.

  • More MBP Display Issues

OK. SO I know this subject has been posted on a number of times but I can't seem to find any definitive answer so apologies in advance for bringing it up again. I have had my 15" MBP for almost 20months and all was well until today when it decided not to display anything. The problem seemed to happen after a sleep when it wouldn't come out of sleep mode.
However, I can boot the machine up and even though there is no display, the machine is active - I've connected to it via Desktop Sharing. I've attempted a Firmware recovery but I'm not convinced this is working since I follow the instructions but the machine simply boots in to OS X almost immediately.
I have tried an external monitor but to no avail. I have also tried following some instructions that suggested deleting the old sleep file but again, no success.
One odd thing is that when I run up the system profiler via screen sharing I see the graphics adapter as GMA X3100. This is odd since surely this should say NVIDIA xyz? My MBP is a 3,1 model from early 2008. 2.4Ghz with 4GB DRAM running the latest patches.
Could this be the NVIDIA card issue that Apple have posted on their front page?
    Any other troubleshooting tips?
    Many Thanks!

All perfectly normal, although I'm surprised the fans are running so fast; my CPU is currently running at 68° and GPU at 57° and the fans are idling at 1000rpm. The left hand side of the machine will get hotter than the right, and the hottest point of the case will normally be near the screen hinge just above the F1/F2/F3 keys.

  • MBP boot issues, GPU very hot, crashes soon after turning it on

    Hi!
I just got a call from my Dad about his MacBook Pro (older Core Duo model, not Core 2 Duo). That's why I couldn't yet check the problem out first-hand and the information is a little vague - sorry about that. It's running the newest version of Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and is generally up to date.
The issue: He turned the MBP on after being away and not using it for one week. He said it didn't boot properly and crashed a few times before even starting up. And the fan was very loud. He managed to boot into the User Interface once, and he said that the average system temperature in the status bar (Temperature Monitor from Bresink software) didn't show the usual ~60°C but was higher, and when he clicked on it to see the details, the temperature of the GPU was way up, around 90°C. CPU temperatures were rather normal, on the other hand.
He could hear a fan spinning, but I guess it's still possible that just the GPU fan died?
Or is there only one fan in the whole system and the problem must be somewhere else?
What could he do to find out more about where the problem lies?
    Thanks a lot!
If necessary, I will drive the few hours and go check on his MBP personally, so if needed you can also post some advanced steps that a typical dad couldn't perform.

    Thanks!
I called him and told him the steps to do the SMC reset, and apparently that seemed to do the trick.
The MBP is now running normally and with cool temperatures again! (so far)
I asked him some more details about how it behaved earlier: Apparently, the computer completely shut itself down after a short while. The temperatures it displayed for the GPU ranged from 96°C to 104°C!
Funny how that one chip can screw up the whole system. But I wonder what causes those SMC screwups?
I remembered now, that I had to do the SMC reset a few times already in the past years on his MBP. None of the previous screwups were as severe as this one (so that the computer wouldn't run at all anymore). But they have been quite numerous, considering other MBPs of friends never had to do an SMC reset once.
What could be wrong with that particular MBP and SMC chip?
    Anyway, thanks again!

  • MbP Boot issues since last firmware upgrade

We have about 15 MacBook Pro's at work here that have been running fine. I have about in my lab area that I do testing on.  Were working on getting them managed better, but at this time it's still the users job to run updates.  Last week I ran apple software update on my two local MbP and things seemed ok.  This week I went to re-image them to test a new image I created and troubles began.  It looked like it installed the image ok but when it went to boot - just gray Apple logo.  So going by standard procedure I got the gray DVD that came with it and attempted to boot up.  It gave me these beeps and the light in front came on three times.  I tried our white SL DVD - same thing.  So I tried to boot up the second MbP from both gray and white DVD's - same issue.
So I did further testing and it seems that while our current image doesn't work, our Lion test image did. I found this odd but figured it must have been something with the last upgrade.  But since all the DVD's we have don't work we didn't really know what to do.  Thankfully we got our shipment of new MbP's that came with a 10.6.7 DVD.  We were able to boot up and re-image the machines ok.
So in the future, how would we know an upgrade is coming that would make our old boot DVD useless?  Thankfully there wasn't any emergencies I had to handle that I was able to work on this.  But this was quite and odd event even for Apple.
    Anyone else have these issues?

  • MBP Audio issue

I have a brand new out the box MBP 15" 2.2ghz and have been experiencing audio problems in the last few days.
    I am running osx 10.6.8
Playback in Itunes becomes patchy when the volume is at full or in general volume is quite loud. When i turn music up audio starts to cut out followed by everything freezing up momentarily (around 5secs).
I originally thought this was an itunes issue but seems to occur when using Spotify also so now i feel it must be a operating system/ audio issue.
Anyone got any ideas? I have reinstalled osx and updated all software with no joy. Can see nothing unusual when activity monitor is open either.
    A bug in 10.6.8?
Thanks for any help in advance.

Hello, I would suggest you contact AppleCare. If you have already reinstalled OSX that usually solves any problems.
They will be able to help you out and fix the problem.
I remember them mentioning something to me about deleteing the iTunes plist when I was having issues with my iTunes, However if you are having issues with 3rd party audio applications, That says to me that it is something wrong with your soundcard or something along those lines.
Like I mentioned already, Give AppleCare a call, and ask for a case ID number, Incase the issue comes up again after your phone call is over, You can setup a genius bar appointment at your nearest Apple store and give them the case ID number.
    Hope this helps some!

Since there were no responses to my question, I have re-worded it.  Second Life runs fine on my late 2009 iMac i7 with it's ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics card. • 2011 MBP RAM issues

I have a 2011 MBP that has recently been giving me trouble. I replaced the RAM about 8 months ago and up until the past few weeks everything had been working fine. Then it occassionaly started freezing up and beeping 3 times. It also has been randomly shutting down while it is supposed to be asleep with the lid shut. It also has done the 3 beeps when I try to turn it on at times.
So, all of this made me decide to take out the RAM and reinstall the original RAM that it shipped with. When I did this it initially would not start and did the 3 beeps so I flipped the RAM stick position and then everything seemed to be working fine until today.
The computer had been put to sleep with the lid closed and when I pulled it out of my bookbag it was super hot as it had apparently been running while in my bookbag. It also has given me the 3 beeps several times today.
I have run memtest and the Apple Hardware Test (although it took me a while to actually get it to run without freezing) and both say there is no trouble to be found.
BUT, something is definitely wrong. Could two different sets of RAM go bad? I find that very unlikely. Are there any other tests I can perform to figure out the source of the problem? I don't want to purchase more RAM only the 3 beep problem continue...

If you installed bad RAM - you will get the 3 beeps but your Macbook won't boot to your desktop.
It could also mean that one of your RAM slots can also be defective.
You can do a few test if you want but it's time consuming - here's what you can do.
    First - try doing a SMC RESET - if that doesn't work - do a PRAM/NVRAM reset.
if none of the above helps.....Take RAM out of the top slot then restart your Macbook - if your issues are gone - then it could be the top slot or the RAM.  If problem persist - take the RAM out of the bottom slot and install the RAM in the top slot - do this with all your RAM until your issues are gone.
It is possible that both sets of RAM you have can go bad - but highly unlikely unless you've damaged them when you were taking the old RAM out and installing the new RAM in.  ESD - Electro-Static Dischage.
Another thing too is that if your Hard Drive is failing or your OS is corrupted - you will also get 3 beeps and will boot to your desktop.
Most people will tell you your RAM is bad - but, it can also be your RAM slot and it can also be your Hard Drive.
Open disk utility and verify your disk permissions - repair them if errors are found - restart after repairs are done and see if your issues are gone.
Also, verify your disk - if errors are found - do not repair until you back up your hard drive.  Once you've backed up your drive - then repair your disk.
    Good luck

  • MBP video issue

    Hi,
recently my 1 year old MBP started to act strange. Randomly the machine locks up and all I can do is keep the power button pressed until it shuts down. The after shutdown at first startup it goes to the Apple Logo screen and then it reboots. At first I thought my machine is overheating but that is a bit strange since I have the smcFanController installed and my fans are at 6000RPM's.
That was 1 week ago, first lookup in 1 year. Since then however just before locking up my screen displays like a patter of short lines with the same color as the active background. For example if my background is has red, white and black then I would get a patter with short oblique lines (about 45 degree angle) with 1 red, 1 white, 1 black and so on all over the screen.
This is becoming very very annoying as sometimes it happens of the middle of something important and I lose all my work. Any ideas what can it be ? Could this be a video card chipset issue or something else ?
Thanks in advance for any help.

    3,1 was released in 2007, not 2006.
But you should be covered by the extended warranty if it indeed is the GPU failure. I believe that specific coverage was extended for 3 years, so it would expire on the day you bought the machine sometime this year.

  • MBP download issues after update.

Okay, so I did the front row, security update a week or so ago and had the problem where my screen would freeze mid booting. Called apple and they had me repair my disk permissions and rename my startup file. Everything worked fine for a while until recently. I noticed when downloading a program, it goes very slow.. Also when I open up transmission or tomato torren and try to open a torrent file, it freezes and I have to force quit the program. I have no idea what happened to my MBP but I am getting really sick of all the problems I'm getting. It also wont let me connect to my schools wireless internet anymore. Anybody know what I could do to relieve these issues? Thanks.

I am sure that there are other users that have had problems since updating the iOS. Have you totally reset the iPad up as a new device - not from a backup - and you are still having the issues?
If you have done so, have you tried closing all apps? Then when you start using apps - if the iPad works OK up until you launch a certain app - it may be that particular app is cursing the issue. And BTW, have you updated all of your apps since you updated the iOS?
    Closing all apps .....
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
