MBP dies while updating - can't reinstall

After rebooting to finish the install for 10.4.7, all I got was a blue screen that stuck there. I could boot single user and lauch Finder as root from the console, but I couldn't boot it normally or log in normally. I tried just about everything under the sun, including all of the stuff from the Apple Support pages.
So, I gave up and decided to reinstall. I hit "Archive & Install" because I can't lose the data on it (yes, I have backups, but the more recent the better). It went through that, and then rebooted to install the stuff from Disc 2. While running the postflight script for iDVD, it just dies with "postflight[xxx]: no matching processes found" in the log and just sits there, forever. I tried reinstalling several times.
So I go back to the beginning and try to redo it all again. This time, it gets to running the install script for "Mac OS X" and sits there repeating "socket is not connected" in the log.
I gave up and just tried an Erase & Install, and the same thing happens every time. I can't even reinstall. I'm out of ideas.
MacBook Pro, 1.83 15" Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I am using the software that came with my MBP. I don't have any other. One of the first things I did was verify the disk with disk utility, and hardware test was okay. The 'verifying your installation media' part passes, and the 'verifying destination volume' part passes. I can see nothing physically wrong with the media, and I find it hard to believe the HDD suddenly failed right as I was installing 10.4.7.
Not trying to shoot you down, just hoping that it's software (which makes sense so far) because I don't have access to an Apple Retail Store and I don't really want to have to deal with sending it to Texas.

  • Early MBP Dead while updating to snow leopard 10.6.1

After installing the 10.6.1 update, my MBP is dead! Downloaded the update, and when restarting, never came back. Can't safeboot or anything. I have it backed up with time machine but it won't respond at all. Fully charged, etc. Snow Leopard worked before I updatedto 10.6.1.
    Any suggestions?

Exactly the same thing happened to me. I initially had trouble installing Snow Leopard on my MBP. Had to wipe the drive to be able to install it. Now when I went to install the 10.6.1 update it powers up but it is unable to find the startup drive. There is just a folder with a question mark on it. Nothing works, I have tried booting from the installation disk, safe mode, even target disk mode. Nothing. It seems that the drive is clicking more than usual. The MPB was working just fine before I installed Snow Leopard. Did Snow Leopard just ruin my hard drive? I'm going to the Genius bar tomorrow.

  • Problem with Coolbook after 10.6.2 update, can't reinstall it

Coolbook doesn't work after updating from 10.6.1 to 10.6.2. When I open it, it says "This update requires a reboot" no matter how many times I reboot. I can't use it, and I also can't uninstall the driver to reinstall it and see if that corrects it. When I try to uninstall it through the preferences pane, it says "failed to uninstall."

    See if this helps:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead. Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
    AppZapper
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Computer froze while updating - Can't use gnome/cinnamon

    Hello
Today I tried to update but then my computer froze. After restarting archlinux I couldn't login into my gnome or cinnamon. I also have openbox installed where I have no access to a terminal.
If I try to use gnome/cinnamon it redirects me to the linux shell. I tried to reinstall gnome/cinnamon but it didn't have any effect.
Any ideas what I can try?
    edit
I also have no access to my filemangers in openbox and gnome terminal doesn't work either.

i assume your computer froze during the update operation, leaving your installation in a unstable state. after restart you are not able to access anything. if that is the case, i think the best option is to use a arch installation disk/usb to boot and finish the update.
    1. create a bootable meadia - cd/usb and boot using that
    2. mount the partitions
    3. arch-chroot to the mounted root partition
    4. run pacman -Syu
if the above is not the case, please give more details.
    thanks

  • Java lost after crash while updating, can't seem to get it back

    hi,
while running software update, my computer crashed and i seem to have lost java.
i've dowloaded a number of jse releases.
most of them didn't work, one did:
    java15release1
    however, when trying to install:
    j2se50 release 1-5, i got the alert
"unable to locate java on this volume" (yes it's the right volume)
i got these errors before and after the succesfull install.
i tried renstalling that one, but it doesn't help.
java is unrecognized in terminal, max-msp (a music app) and the sun's test site crashed firefox.
so, would be nice if anyone could help, i tried some things i found by searching, but they came down to what i had tried already.
pity, was just about to take on java programming...
btw i have the developers tools installed if that might matter.
    thanks in advance

hmmm this seems to slip downpage really easily, please don't mind me for bumping it.

  • Can't reinstall 6300 firmware

Hello, my phone is rebooting about every minute (blank screen and again normal). I went to Nokia service and they reinstalled the phone's firmware and evertyhing was allright, but i played with a large mount of sms with this phone and this problem came again. Recently I have bought nokia DKE-2 cable. I want to reinstall the phone's firmware alone (without the nokia service) but I can't - "update failed". I think this is because my phone is restarting every ~minute and nokia software updater can't reinstall normaly, but i know that nokia service can it do easily
My OS: Win XP Professional, SP 2. I tried with the newest PC suite, but i uninnstalled it because I had problems with connecting a cable. Then I downloaded only software updater, installed it and the driver(all that is needed). But in 5/6 Step i have message - that "Software update failed, try again".
Ah one more thing: it's written that phone must have set "General profile", but every my phone's restart the phone profile is setting to silent..
How can I easily reinstall the nokia's 6300 firmware?
    Thanx.

  • Software Update can't check for updates because of a network problem....after firmware update

I just bought a MBP w/Lion (10.7.4) and ran software update.  The first two items I updated were firmware for SMC (ver 1.5) and EFI (ver 2.7) and now my MBP says: "Software Update can't check for updates because of a network problem."  However, I can connect to the Internet to surf the web just fine.  This is the only update I've made.  Can firmware be uninstalled?  If I reverted to the image on my external drive that I did with CCC prior to the update, would that fix it?

Hi! i hope i'm able to explain what i worked out and what worked for me. I had the same message coming up "no internet connection, run network/internet diagnosis" etc etc. Internet connection was fine. What i finally did:
Open airport, check internet, internet options ; with me, IPv6 was set as  this (the letters are in german order and not in a english order, sorry...):
In system prefs, network/TCP/IP  IPv6 was set to "automatic":
I did change the settings in Airport back to "Link Local" and Software Update worked immediately normal whithout restarting the computer.
No idea what changed the settings; however i did run permission repairs beforehand with no connection to any problems, just as a normal kind of 'maintenance routine'.
Hope this helps others, it worked for me.
    Cheers

  • While updating my Ipod to ios 5 an unexpcted error occured and now my ipod is not recognized by itunes or my computer and all data has been removed. What can I do

While updating my Ipod to ios 5 an unexpected arror occured before my data was restored and now Itunes will not recognise my Ipod. My Ipod is also not seen as a device in My Computer but asks me to install drivers. What can I do?

    - First I would remove and reinstall all the Apple software using the following and then restoring the ipOd.
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
    - Next see if manually placing the iPOd in recovery mode will allow a restore. For recovery mode see:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore
    - Next try DFU mode:
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - Next try another computer/cable to help determine if you have a computer or iPod problem.
    - If the other computer works and yours does not see:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows

    As Niel pointed out, yes.  The disk probably will look like the MBP disk (4) in this screenshot;

  • HT1926 While updating my iTunes this message came up "Service 'apple mobile device' (apple mobile device) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services" what can I do to get my iTunes to work again?

While updating my iTunes this message came up "Service 'apple mobile device' (apple mobile device) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services" what can I do to get my iTunes to work again?

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

  • I left my OS CD at home while I am travelling. How can I reinstall the OS?

I left my OS CD at home while I am travelling. How can I reinstall the OS?

You'll need your OS installer disk or a retail disk with a version later than the one that came with your MBP. You realize that what you want to do will necessitate erasing your HD so you might want to wait till you get back home.

  • HT1338 Can I reinstall and update?

A Java install occurred recently while I was using Safari. After the install completed, I noticed that the installation instructions specified all browsers be closed before installation took place. Can I "reinstall" this software from the command line with the browser closed?

Will it matter if the java update installed with Safari open...
    No.

  • I attempted to install an update to my iTunes and got a "C   Runtime Error" message. Now when I attempt to open iTunes I get a pop up that says to reinstall iTunes. But I can't open iTunes to reinstall it. How can I reinstall iTunes?

I received notification of ANOTHER iTunes update being available, so I attempted to install the update on my Toshiba Satellite laptop running Windows Vista. During the update process, two pop-up announced that I had a "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library" Runtime Error, R6034 and another pop-up that states "iTunes" iTunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes. However, I cannot open iTunes. I get the same pop-up telling me to reinstall iTunes.
I had many songs in my iTunes library that came from sources other than iTunes, mostly my own CDs. Plus, I have nearly $100 credit remaining in the iTunes store. I'm converned I will lose the songs and store credit if I reinstall iTunes. So my questions are:
    1. How can I reinstall iTunes?
    2. If I reinstall it, will I lose my store credit and non-iTunes songs?
    Thanks,

Nothing should be lost... However... it is both Prudent and Recommended that a backup should have been created and maintained.

  • While updating iphone software to 5.0.1, I am getting error message that Iphone cound not be updated because the firmware file is not compatible. Can anyone help me to resolve this issue.

While updating iphone software to 5.0.1, I am getting error that Iphone could not be updated because the firmware file not compatible.
Can anyone help me to resolve this issue.

Using iTunes 10.5.2.11 on a PC running 64 bit Windows 7
First did a full back up of  iphone using iTunes
Put iphone into Recovery Mode ( http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808 ). Erases all user data and settings!
    Disconnected USB cable from iphone
Powered off iphone by holding down Sleep/Off button until slider appeared, slid to off, waited until screen dark
Pressed and kept holding Home button while plugging cable back into phone
I still saw the graphic on the iphone that said to plug into iTunes, so I unplugged and re-plugged cable. (I may have released the Home button too soon)
Recovery Mode alert came up in iTunes.
Followed all iTunes prompts to restore phone - it downloaded and sucessfully installed iOS 5.0.1
iphone did not appear in iTunes due to missing pairing file (that made me nervous)
iphone was now at factory settings. I followed prompts on iphone screen to start reactivation process
Eventually the iphone asked if I wanted to restore from a back-up (whew!)
A window opened in iTunes and I was able to select my previous back-up file for the restore
A full restore from back-up then occured
I also allowed a carrier settings update to occur when prompted (not sure that happens in all cases)
When the restore was done I had to re-enter some passwords, but everything was there
iOS is now 5.0.1 (9A406). The whole process took about an hour.
