MBP Display changes resolution to 800x600 after sleep

Weird situation... I usually just shut the cover of my MBP forcing sleep. If, for some reason my cursor is at the upper left corner, and I open the lid, the screen will go black for about 1 second, and the display has changed to 800x600. All I haver to do is reset the display in Preferences and all is ok again, until the next time. This does NOT happen every time I put the NBP to sleep - very arbitrary. I only have one hot corner assigned for Expose (lower right).
I'm current on OS and firmware.
Any ideas ???

Situation does not present itself anymore. Issue closed.

  • Slimline s3321p display does not turn on after sleep (Win 7)

Upgraded from Vista 32 bit system to Win 7 32 bit because of lots of Vista issues. Win 7 resolved most problems but then recently, after a couple of months, display would not turn on following sleep or hibernation. Couldn't fix so did clean install of win 7 64 bit (custom instead of update) to resolve the problem. But same thing in Win 7 64. Installed the multiple MS updates. MS''s Nvidia display driver install always failed and a couple others I downloaded elsewhere failed as well. Did finally get a recent driver from nvidia's website that installed (9.18.13.697), but it didn't solve the problem. Ran the same as the older driver.
    Also tried the following:
-all kinds of power setting changes
-different monitor (flatscreen TV is the normal one I use because this is my dvr/media machine)
    -different RGB cable
-ran win 7 install disk to fix any OS problems
    -inactivating hibernate
-checking voltage output of all power supply leads following instructions (all within normal tolerance)
    -reconnecting all motherboard leads
-swapping around the two 2GB memory modules
    -various system checks
-tried to install various Vista 64 bit fixes/updates from HP website, but they don't install ("don't meet minimum requirements")
-and more things I can't remember
HP doesn't seem to have any Win 7 support for this computer, so now I'm at a loss. At the moment I'm leaving the machine on all the time, but don't want to do this forever. I suppose it could be a faulty motherboard, but short of replacement, anything else to try?

    Hi,
    A couple of suggestions:
Check you have the latest BIOS update - 5.18 - search for sp40834.exe - often these updates improve these functions
If you are game, try just one RAM stick installed as a test, try slot 0 and 1
Lastly, try a different video cable - It's a long shot, but it could be key to the issue
    Hope that these suggestions assist

  • How can I require a password to change the "Require password after sleep or screen saver begins" setting

My son has a habit of disabling the "Require password after sleep or screen saver begins" setting whenever my wife lets him play a game on her account.  I notice every other setting on the "Security & Privacy -> General" tab is protected by the lock on the lower left corner.  I've never understood why this one is not.  Is there any way that I can get that setting to also be controlled by the lock?

Because that setting is specific to the account currently logged in and doesn't potentially affect any others or the system itself, which is the level in general at which administrator or root access is required.

  • Display Changes Resolution When Computer Wakes From Sleep

I have a MacBook Pro bought in May of 2006. In the last year, this problem has been getting progressively more annoying to me. When the computer wakes from sleep (not every time, but most of the time) the screen will flash blue, then reset the resolution to 640 x 480, I think. To fix it, all I have to do is go to System Preferences and change the resolution, but when I do that, it pops up two windows, like it thinks I have a dual display set up. To fix this, I always click 'detect displays,' and it fixes it, but the next time I wake the computer from sleep, it does it again. This isn't really an urgent problem, but I would expect my computer to behave a bit better for me.
Thank you in advance for any aid you might give me.
    Lisel

Hi Lisel. I have a similar age MacBookPro that does the same thing. I don't really know how to fix it I'm sorry, I wish I did cause it's annoying. I just thought I'd let you know you're not the only one with this issue.
Basically, for some reason it thinks it has two displays connected, even when there isn't. To stop it being a total pain, make sure when it does come up with the two Display Pref windows to set them both to 1440x900, at least then when it does go dual display it won't be 640x480 and you can still read stuff.
I've also left the Display Pref icon on the top tool bar (next to the AirPort and Bluetooth and stuff), so I can just click that and Detect Displays. When it does that it figures out for itself it doesn't actually have two displays connected and so goes back to normal.
I know that's a workaround and not a fix, sorry. I'd be keen to know if anyone else has any better solutions:)
    Thanks,
    Mark.

  • Satellite 4080 xcdt, small Picture after changing resolution to 800x600

    Hi.
After changing the Res. to 800x600 or lower (while playing an older DOS-Game), the screen is reduced to postcard-format.
Has Anyone an idea to solve this problem,(other display-driver or s.th.)?
    Greetings, R.

    Hi Ralf,
I believe there is a setting in your BIOS to force the screen image to stretch to fit the available space.

  • Screen resolution changes automatically to 800x600 after hibernation - 945GM Express chipset - Solution

    Hi,
if you are using VISTA SP1 RC2 or the RTM version shipped last week with a 945GM Express video chipset you probably are having problems with the screen resolution dropping to 800x600 on resuming from sleep.
INTEL has posted a new version of the driver v15.7.3 on their website. This works fine on my Portage R300, should work on other machines too, even though this is a generic driver.
    Hope this helps!

    Hi Gery
    Thanks for the useful information.
I have noticed a similar issue with Vista running on my non-Toshiba notebook The graphic driver update helps definitely.

  • Display changed/overscan not working after most recent update

I'm running my mini through an LG 42" plasma TV using a store-bought HDMI to DVI cable, and I had the resolution at 1344x756.
After I did the most recent update for what I assume was Leopard 10.5.7, my resolution and colour quality changed. Now with overscan on the picture is cropped and the dock is almost out of view when I hover over it, and with overscan off there is a black gap of about an inch framed around my screen. The only change ocurred after I reset the computer post-update. I tried re-installing the update and messing around with the cable connection to no avail.
What are the odds that it was the cable? Is there anything you know of to roll back updates? Has this happened to anyone?

I have exactly the same problem, on a Sony 36". With overscan on, I can't see the menu bar at the top of the screen, and lose a lot of the dock. By turning overscan off, and fiddling the display settings on the TV (altering area to -2) I can get it so it uses up more (tho still not all) of the screen, with all the bars etc.
I could live with this, however it also seems to have screwed up the res. No matter what setting I use the fonts look fuzzy and hard to read. The tv screen was never quite as crisp as the monitor on our iMac, but I could read an e-mail without feeling nauseous.
    Hoping Apple will fix this....

  • IMac Retina 5K Display changes tones when waking from sleep -- Is this normal?

Every single time that I wake my Retina iMac from display or system sleep, the colors on the monitor seem to change tones twice:
First the display goes from dim to slightly brighter (within first 1-3 seconds)
Then the display goes from cooler (blues) to warmer (yellows) (within first 5-10 seconds)
Does this sound normal?  Do you suspect the pixels are just warming up?  I tried calibrating my display, but this doesn't fix it.

Writing it off as "warming up" for the dim to brighter effect seems sensible... but cooler to warmer colors seems odd to me...
Fortunately, you can technically reach the cooler colors of your preference by doing a Display calibration, so it's not like the monitor is incapable of achieving that tone of color.  But would be nice to understand why it changes tones in the first place.  Perhaps it's doing a quick refresh to achieve an ideal color temperature?
Worst case scenario, Apple is very flexible with returns (when I bought my Retina MacBook that I felt had a hardware issue, they immediately replaced it without question) so worst case scenario you could always ask for a replacement given it's such a new / recently purchased machine.  I considered doing this, but am concerned it might be an issue with all the the Retina iMac machines... would hate to have to swap & setup the computer all over again.

  • MBP won't connect to Internet after sleeping

Last night I woke up my MBP (2.2Ghz, 2GB RAM, OS X v10.5.6) and it wouldn't connect to the Internet. I thought it was a problem w/ the network itself and confirmed it by testing another computer. However, when the network connection was restored on the other computer, I still couldn't get my MBP to connect.
I verified that the other Macs in the house could connect to the wireless router (Apple Extreme Base Station w/ latest firmware). I could connect to the Internet using the Linux virtual machine under Parallels on my MBP and the application PeerGuardian is showing IP addresses being tracked in the log. I can also access the 'net just fine using my admin account in the MBP, so I know there is nothing wrong w/ the router or Internet connection, nor is there a problem w/ my MBP physically.
I have tried several different troubleshooting methods. When I try pinging an Internet address, I receive the error "No route to host". When I run Network Diagnostics, I receive green lights indicating there is no problem w/ the connection. However, I can't use any of my browsers, Software Update, or most of my other Internet applications because they indicate that there is no connection.
Opera (my primary browser) just sits there when I type in a URL; sometimes it will give the error "internal communications error", implying the website itself is down but usually it will just wait, acting like it's trying to connect. Safari gives the error "Can't connect to the server. Safari can't open the page 'http://www.google.com' because it could not connect to the server 'www.google.com'."
I have reset the Airport Extreme router and had a weird issue. After the reset, my MBP wouldn't display the router in the Airport Utility, though my wife's Macbook found it just fine. It just kept stating that there were no routers available and if I would like to rescan. After 5-10 minutes though, my MBP finally detected and displayed the router.
I have verified and repaired disk permissions, verified the disk itself, and even restarted in Safe Mode to force a disk check on boot. The only profile that is affected is my personal one; like I said, Parallels and the admin account are both fine.
I'm figuring I will just have to make a new profile but I really don't want to do that if I don't have to. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas that I haven't tried?

I am having the exact problem!! Some places that have wifi I have no problem; others I can always log on to their wifi but can't seem to maintain a connection. If I wait for a long long time it sometimes will reload. Any help would be appreciated. It consistently happens at the same coffee shop. I have no issues at home or at the public library. Others at the coffee shop have no problems at all so it seems to be only my machine. When I take my old ibook to the shop I can connect and stay connected with no problems.

  • MBP freezes when DVI is unplugged after sleep

If my MBP has been to sleep at anytime and I plug the DVI adapter in to use a LCD projector(with Keynote) , the screen goes to the blue transition screen when I unplug , but then never comes back from the blue. This does not happen when I plug in off a stright start up. Since I am a teacher and move room to room, i no not want to have to shut down and restart 5 times a day to avoid this!!! Help!

    Hello bzgeo,
I need to double confirm this issue to avoid misunderstanding.
    1. Before you move, you used the a 47 inch LG LED LCD HDTV and an acer G236HL monitor all plugged in. Did you try to only use only one single HDTV with acer G236HL monitor unplugged? And did you meet the same issue at that time?
    2. In your last reply, about this sentence ‘two different tvs, using only HDMI’, do you mean that you use two different HDTVs at the same time?
    3. What driver did you update?
Please update both the graphic card driver and the drivers for TV and monitor.
Additionally, please run the safe mode. In this mode, only the basic files and drivers necessary to run Windows are started.
If the HDTV doesn’t have this distorted display issue, this phenomenon are likely to be caused by third-party drivers.
For more information about safe mode, please take a look at the following article.

This article is about Windows 7, and the Windows 8 is similar.

  • Can't stop Thunderbolt display from flickering white lines after firmware update (Yosemite)

I am having serious issues after the Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update 1.2. Running Yosemite on MacBook Pro and I am now getting white lines that gradiate from the bottom to the top of my screen across multiple browsers, apps and even the finder window anytime I move my mouse. I cannot take a screenshot (it stops when I try) but I posted a video here:
    http://youtu.be/3zOKL1JFp5M
It is impossible to work this way and after 20 minutes of watching my screen constantly refresh anytime I move my mouse I am feeling nauseous.
Is there anyway to UNINSTALL this firmware update? I was not having this kind of problem before. Every once in awhile I was finding my Thunderbolt display would not wake up after sleep and I thought the firmware update would fix that, not cause more, crazier problems. It is causing this gradiating line problem on my Thunderbolt display AND my MacBook Pro screen, which is even more bizarre.

I updated and no issues with my 2012 Mini so may be computer related.  I believe once a firmware has been "burned" into the chip it cannot be redone.

  • My display keeps changing to 800x600 after upgrade to 10.8.3

After upgrading to 10.8.3 my display keeps changing to 800x600 after it wakes up from sleep. I have to go to preferences and set again, and it works. It is quite annoying. Any clue.

    Not much to go on.
What monitor and connection method are you using with the mac Mini..?
Have you tried resetting the > NVRAM and PRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.

  • MBP Changes color settings after sleep

After my computer goes to sleep, it has recently been waking up with a different color setting. Where the yellows are very dull and the screen has a blue hue. When I go to System Pref > Displays it changes back to normal without me clicking anything. It is getting very annoying, anyone know why it is doing this?
My computer is connected to a 24" LED cinema display which doesn't change colors on its own. The laptop has also done this without being connected to cinema display.
    Thanks guys

    This happens to me, also.
Just as you described - it happens when connected to an external display and when not connected.
It happens to me even without sleep; screensaver is enough.
I have my computer set to ask for a password after sleep/screensaver. Do you?
    charlie
P.S. I just did a search of the forums - this is apparently a very common problem, dating back at least to Leopard. I haven't seen a definitive fix for it yet.

  • 17" MBP , display settings after wake from sleep

My display will be very dim after waking & I will have to move the display slider in sys pref.to brighten .It doesn't always happen but I would say it happens about 80% of the time. This in turn somewhat defeats the calibration I have done with a HueyPRO. Is there a way to lock this setting ? No padlock on this pane in sys pref.
I do not have the auto adjust display checked. I do have the display to prompt a password from sleep for security. I am the only user but have a second "trouble shooter" acct.that I have yet to use.
    thanks

would this be a warranty issue ?

  • External display - maximum resolution only works in safe mode on MBP

I'm having an issue with an external display connected to a 2012 non-retina MacbookPro 15" i7 running 10.9.  Monitor is Dell U2713HM, which has a maximum resolution of 2560x1440, and is connected via a Mini-Dipslayport to Displayport cord.
My setup has been working great for over a year, where while at my office I use the macbook closed in "clamshell mode" with the Dell monitor being the only display in use, running at 2560x1440.  However today when I came into my office and connected to the dispay as usual, the resolution on the Dell was noticably scaled.  System preferences is showing it running Scaled at 1080p, and when I select Best for Display it stretches to a very wide and distorted resolution.  I can hold alt and click the Scaled button to display additional resolutions, however the maximum resolution listed is 1600x1200.  Same problem regardless of clamshell, mirror, or extended desktop modes.
I've been trying to track down the problem, and have run though the usual procedures: restart, shutdown, reset PRAM, reset SMC, check cord connections, verify disk, repair disk permissions - all to no avail.  However when I boot in safe mode the display runs as it should at 2560x1440 without issue, which lets me know its not a problem with the cord or connectioin, but rather something on the OS / GPU side.
I can't for the life of me figure out what is causing the issue.  Considering its been working fine for quite some time, and I've made no unusual changes to the MBP in the past 48 hours when the display was working properly, I'm not really sure where to go from here.   Hoping to not have to migrate to a new user or repartion my HDD.
    Any suggestions on possible solutions?
    Thanks.

I stumbled upon a fix.  Still not sure what caused the issue in the first place, but for anyone having the same issue, the display override script contained on the site below seems to have fixed the issue.
