MBP display dims slightly off while reading a long article....???
Hi all,
I have done a lot of research in this discussion, but couldn't find the resolution. The MBP display always dims slightly off while not in use for 1 minute. If I check off the setting in the Energy Saver/Option/"Automatically reduce the brightness.....", then display dims off completely (dark...)!! It's very annoying since ever time when I read an article without moving mouse for 1 minute, then the display dims off slightly. I have to keep moving the mouse so it doesn't dim off.
Actually my roommate has a MBP too... he has the same problem.... only takes 1 minute for the display to dim off (not completely, only dim off the brightness...) but he said it doesn't bother him. For me it is really annoying...
Does anyone have the same issue? Does anyone find any resolution?? I talked to the Genius guy and they said they don't know what to do about it....
Thanks in advance.
thats just what it does for me, i dont have it set to anything to control that,
edit- found the app you can get to fix it (you cna test drive it or pay 9 bucks for teh full app http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1051update.html

Thanks in advance.Okay okay, I see what you're saying... I thought you were saying it goes off and doesn't come back on or something.
Anyways, this is normal behavior but it can be prevented. Go to energy saver preference panel. For both battery and adaptor, slide the "put displays to sleep after" slider all the way to the right, which is never. Make sure also under the options tab, that you uncheck the "reduce brightness..." box. -
Slightly off topic: Read-only tables pre 11g
Hi gang
I'm just writing up a database quiz for a local user group and I was hoping I could get a bit of inspiration from the database experts.
One of the questions will be "prior to 11g with the introduction of read-only tables, how could you make a table read-only?". The answers I've come up with:
1) Security priviliges (schema + grant SELECT)
2) Triggers
3) Create a check constraint with disable validate
4) Read-only tablespace
5) Read-only database (standby)
6) (Slightly crazy) Create view, and instead-of triggers that do nothing (similar to 2)
7) Write the query results on a piece of paper and then turn the database off
Anybody have any other answers, real or slightly off topic like mine please? ;)
Cheers,
CM.Check constraint and trigger solutions may have problems with sqlldr direct path operations, so using it together with alter table disable lock may be mandatory depending on the needs. Especially if DDLs are also wanted to be avoided.
This topic was once mentioned on Tom Kyte's blog or asktom but I couldn't find the source to link here.

MBP simply switches itself off while on battery
Hope to get some idea of what's going... basically yesterday while I was using my MBP on battery alone, the computer simply switches itself off out of the blue. So I check the temperature and everything seems fine. I was using it with video card in the "better battery life" mode, so I didn't think it was overheating. So I switched it on again. After starting, after a few minutes it went off again. I gave up and didn't switch on again until connected to the mains, and it is on until now without any problems.
Has anyone experienced this before? Any ideas of what's going on?
ThanksI have experienced this before. I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but this is a sign that the battery is dying. You may well find that the time before this happens reduces until eventually you will get a few minutes at best.
You do not say how old the MBP is or if this is the original battery. My old one (recently replaced) went through the first battery in just over a year; and then a year later the second went too. I changed how I used the third one. I had relied on mains power when I could before. With the last one I used battery whenever I could and charged when necessary.
Make sure the battery is calibrated but I am not sure that is going to help. -
How to keep screen on while reading something
While reading some detailed articles on the web in Safari,I face a lot of problem. The screen goes dim and then turns off.
Is there any way by which I can program my mac in such a way that it automatically detects that I am reading some article and the screen doesn't off or go dim ??
ThanksI don't know of any software that detects when you're reading the screen - that's not to say some doesn't exist.
I'm sure there used to be an option to elect whether the screen should dim before sleeping/screen saving, but I can't actually find it. I'm on an iMac, maybe it's laptop specific and I haven't got one any more to check.
At least if it dims first you've got the chance to touch a key/mouse/trackpad to prevent it sleeping. -
My MBP mid 2010 display blackout and froze while working but my keyboard light will still light up. Won't be able to retrieve it and have to hard shutdown. Sometimes it happens a lot. Wether it connected to power or not, it will blackout on and off. Please advice what shall I do.
Do you have a 15" mid-2010? If so then your problem is surely...
Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.
Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:
Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff
dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000
com.apple.nvidia.nv50hal(6.4.0)@0x83c05000->0x84019fff
dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000
com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000->0x8378dfff
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000
Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…
Good luck,

Screen dims slightly while I'm working.
I just got my new MacBook Pro yesterday. So I'm surprised that it seems to be malfunctioning already. Specifically, while I'm working the screen will dim slightly even though I am typing or working. Thoughts?
This is because of the ambient light sensors, which are, as the poster above mentions, located under the speaker grills. If you don't wish to turn off this feature, just don't hold your hands over the speaker grills making a shadow. (I am a two-finger typist, so I tend to shadow the left sensor often.) Once I realized what I was doing, it doesn't bother me so much. It's more pronounced at low brightness settings.
Hope this answers your question. -
Using Dual Display. Turn Off MBP Display?
I have no interest in using Clamshell Mode. Is there a way to disable the MBP display while connected to a second monitor with lid open?
To my knowledge, through countless searches, there is no built in way to turn the MBP screen off without closing the lid and sending the system into clamshell mode.
But there may be a third party solution. a Google search and or a search of these forums should turn it up. -
Using a Second Display while MBP display is in Fullscreen use
I recently began using a second display consistently (something I only did sparingly in the past), and I was hoping to find out how to utilize my second display while running a fullscreen application on the MBP display (when in fullscreen, the second display is taken into fullscreen, but only with a solid black), and continue using everything else normally if situated on the second display.
Did you have a specific app or application in mind?

iMac 7,1 turning internal screen off while watching a movie via output (second display), is it possible with Lion?
Actually, Plex does the best job by placing a black background to the internal iMac screen it's called Blanking.
However that does not turn off the backlit which is very bright on the iMac 24" also the internal screen will draw more power that way. As you probably know running bootcamp you can turn off the internal screen while watching a movie on the external. This isn't a hardware limitation, I hope Lion has this feature. -
Turning off MBP Display when Cinema Display connected
Hello,
Sorry if this is a stupid question but I have a 23" Cinema Display attached to my MBP via DVI and although it's great to watch DVDs on, I would like to turn off my MBP display whilst doing this to save energy, reduce the distraction etc - is there a way of doing this?
Help appreciated. You'd need an external keyboard and mouse as well. Follow these steps:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131
Alternatively, there are haxies that disable lid-closed sleep:
SleepLess: http://www.alxsoft.com/mac/sleepless.html

The light on my iPad goes dim while reading on kindle app.
A reset may help. Tap and hold the Home button and the On/Off button at the same time for approximately 10-15 seconds, until the Apple logo reappears. After the logo reappears, release both buttons and await restart.
