MBP dvd burner died, connect MBP to desktop PC and burn from there?

Hey guys, i have a an older Macbook Pro that has had a hard life and the dvd burner is no longer working. my question: is there any way, with a program i download or cord or anything, where I can connect my MBP to my old windows xp desktop and barrow the dvd burner in there? I think you could use remote burners with the Macbook Air but I never looked into it. Can I connect with a USB or Ethernet cable to my PC and just barrow the dvd burner in it to burn DVD Studio Pro projects? thank you in advance!
Macbook Pro Early 2008 i think. (Model# A1260)
Mac OS X 10.5.8
2.5 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
4 GB RAM

In the Mac open System Preferences->Network pane, "Advanced" button and them click the WINS tab. There change the WINS name to the same one that is on the PC (MSHOME).
Also maybe the guide (even though it's for 10.5 or later) File Sharing With OS X 10.5 - Introduction to File Sharing With Your Mac. It might help.

since this morning [1 may] i cannot connect to any bookmarked or other url [except the firefox homepage?!], because the only connection made is to yahoo!search. and even when yahoo!search displays the search result correctly to the site i want to go on, if i click on that i only get returned to yahoo!search again. since i prefer not to use yahoo!search at all, how can i disable yahoo!search permanently?

Check that you do not run Firefox in compatibility mode or with a reduced screen resolution.
You can open the Properties of the Firefox desktop shortcut via the right-click context menu and check the "Compatibility" tab.
Make sure that all items are deselected in the "Compatibility" tab of the Properties window.
You can check if you have the XML files of the default search engines including Google in the browser\searchplugins folder in the Firefox program folder.
If not then you need to reinstall Firefox.
Try to delete the search.json file and possible search-metadata.json and search.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder to reset the search engines to the default.
Firefox will rebuild the search.json file from the default search engines in the "browser\searchplugins" folder in the Firefox program folder and the searchplugins folder in the Firefox profile folder.

I have forgotten my Password to be able to connect between my desktop Mac and Mac Book on my home network. How can I recover the password or change it?

The password used to log in to a user account remotely is the same as you would use to log into it locally. You can also use your Apple ID, so try that.
To change your login password read OS X Mavericks: Reset a login password

I have a new lion server and 4 lion laptops. The laptops loose connection to the shared documents and printers from the server after roughly 1 hour. By disconnecting and re-connecting wireless the connection is regained to shares and printers. We can still surf the web when it goes down.

Ok 1st one. The warning restriction message relates to this line in main.cf:
    smtpd_helo_restrictions = permit_sasl_authenticated  permit_mynetworks  check_helo_access hash:/etc/postfix/helo_access  reject_non_fqdn_hostname  reject_invalid_hostname  permit reject_invalid_helo_hostname
The last reject occurs after the single word "permit" and is ignored.
    However, that's not the problem.
I'm not exactly sure what's happening, but this might be a clue.
It would appear that either postfix is not being able to create the socket for private/policy or it's somehow created with the wrong permissions.  You might need to ramp up the debug level to get a better idea.
You could check if it's being created by "netstat -a | grep private/policy" in terminal.
My guess is that it's not being created because there is no setup statement in your master.cf file, but I don't understand why postfix would be looking for it if it isn't set up.  Private/policy I think relates to grey listing.  Maybe gives you a hint.

    What's the answer?
    Thanks

Many thanks to  responded to my question and sorry not to get back sooner.
Yes, I discovered by this unfortunate experience that the names of photos are a serious issue if the site is to ever go to an FTP server.  Apple should discuss this carefully in their "manual".
One more question:  I uploaded the website to a folder on my desktop. When I open it, unlike the photos in iWeb, there are folders for each page which have all the photos in them. I went through each folder and changed the names to be FTP compatible. I'm using iWeb SEO Tool which allows one to upload from this local folder to an FTP server but having trouble.
Is this because there is an imbedment in iWeb that uses the old photo names to link to the actual photos and it can't find them because of the name changes?
Thanks again for your help ...

  • DVD burned from iDVD skips on TV not computer

Help! I create a graduation DVD every year for the 8th grade at my daughters' school. It is created in iMovie and is made of pictures and music - basically a slideshow. After I create it in iMovie, I pull it into Garage Band to chapter it, then send it to iDVD from there. Basically I have been getting calls from parents that when they try to view the slideshow it skips terribly on a television. However, if they put it in their computer it views just fine. Can anyone tell me how to correct this problem? I will soon have 40 parents calling me for new DVDs!!!!
Thank you in advance to anyone that can help me with this problem!!! It is truly appreciated.
    Lisa
PS The music teacher informed me that previous video projects I created for her before April viewed just fine on a television. It was with the April 19th Musical that started to have problems and only could be viewed on a computer.

Just to add to the good advice already posted above; might also what to consider two more items. The first being that your mac is not built for burning back to back dvd's. You can burn one fine, maybe even two but thereafter you must allow the lens to cool prior to burning subsequent dvd's or you will experience exactly what you pointed out above. Namely, much higher error rates when burning additional dvd's causing them to skip, distort, or stop altogether.
Secondly, consider making a disc image to the desktop and burn from that image only to Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, or Maxell Dvd-R at no higher than 4x. Use Minus media if the distortions are solely visible on set top dvd players or TV's (as opposed to your mac or pc). Minus media will give you better results over plus media toward your objective of universal playback.
Hope this is helpful but if not just come on back.

  • DVD burned from a disk image won't work on different computers???

Video DVDs are in the UDF format. The disk image you created is in the UDF format. When you use Disk Utility to burn the disk image to writable media, the new discs will be in UDF format and all will be well.
    You are doing things correctly.
BTW, unless you have an external burner with lots of cooling, if you expect to use the burner in your Mac (which DOESN'T have lots of cooling), it's a good idea to pause between discs to allow the burner to cool down. (BTW, this comment is based on the reported results of several people in the forum. If you don't allow the cool down timer, you will start to create 'bad' discs. Also it is VERY important that you reduce the burn speed in Disk Utility to 4x or lower in order to create discs with maximum compatability with players. (You should see a way to change the speed in Disk Utility afterr you have inserted a disc.)

  • Unable to boot on Mac Mini from DVD burned from .iso image

I'm following the Beginner's Guide to try and install Arch on a Mac Mini "Late 2009".
I have downloaded archlinux-2014.10.01-dual.iso and associated .sig, and have verified it using the gpg2 command described in the guide (including the link to http://sparewotw.wordpress.com/2012/10/ … -sig-file/ which gave some assurance that the ambiguous answer produced by gpg2 was in fact legitimate).
I then used OSX's Disk Utility to burn the .iso file to a blank DVD. After verifying the burn, it ejected the disk.
When I re-inserted it, I received a message that the disk was unmountable, giving me the option to Ignore or Eject. I chose Ignore. Then I went to the System Preferences > Startup Disk, to see if it would at least appear there as an option, but it didn't.
(I should mention that I also burned the same file to another disk using a Windows machine, and when I inserted it into the Mac I got the same message, so I don't think it's corrupted media. (Bad reader, perhaps? eek.) )
That's where I stand. There are so many variables at play here (many of them Apple-induced, I think) that I've been unable to find a solution that fits my situation. Could someone please provide suggestions / pointers / answer?
    Thanks,
    Chap

Exactly right. Holding the Option key caused a display of various bootable OSes, including the one I had just burned from the Mac using hdiutil (weirdly entitled "windows"). I selected it, and it booted. I now have a console. Problem solved. Thanks.
UPDATE: note that this boot disk *cannot* be seen or selected via the OSX System Preference > Startup Disk panel. Holding the Option key during startup seems to be the only way to select it.

  • Dvd burning from idvd with strange results

I have made a short 5 minute movie in FCP and exported it to QuickTime as I have done numerous times before. I created a menu in IDVD and then dragged QT file in. Everything looks great and plays on screen great. Then I burn the DVD. Once done I put it on TV via a different DVD player and it plays however about a minute into the video on the top of the screen I see part of another image. It almost looks like part of my G4 background screen (which is a picture) has somehow leaked through and gotten burned onto this dvd. Anyhow, I thought it was a bad DVD so burned another (TDK 8x DVD-r). Same thing happened again. Even when I put this burned DVD on my G-4 and play it I still have weird image. I went back and checked the movie again in FCP and then re-exported to QT as a self contained movie and did the whole IDVD thing all over again. Still has the weird image leaking through. By the way, before burning I did play the QT file through QT and that plays perfect! It also plays perfect through FCP. I am concerned it could be my drive. Any suggestions or hints.

Well I discovered the problem previously posted by me concerning dvd burning with strange results. I found the exact spot in the burned dvd where the video had the other image appear along the top and then went to FCP and found the exact spot on it. Lo and behold on FCP at that exact spot in the video a "marker" had been inserted. I cleared all markers and re-exported and burned again in idvd and everything works perfectly. So apparently the marker insert in FCP caused all the problems.

  • DVD burned from a PC mounts as blank CDR

A client of ours has received (on a few occasions) simple photo images burned to a DVD that when they arrive, they mount on the Mac as a blank CDR, asks if you want to "Open it in the Finder" to burn to it, etc... I have allowed the Finder to mount the "blank" media (mounts with the CDR icon), and even tried burning to it to see if it was actually blank, but would get "too much data to burn" errors when trying to burn a 52k Word doc, so it certainly seems as if there is data on them, and you can see the burned area on the DVD itself (about half full).
Since this has happened a few times to them, and it is reproducible on all machines when it does, it seems it has something to do with the way the PC user is burning them or with the media itself (dual layer maybe?), and simply wanted to know if there was anyone here that knows what the problem might be, or at least have a hint. On a Mac, as you are all aware, it's as simply as dragging stuff to the DVD icon and burning... so I'm not sure what issues on a PC could cause this (or what burning program, burn setting, format, etc...). Mounts as a blank CDR, even though there is data on it, and the printing on the media itself states it is a DVD.
Thank you very much for any info!

  • Problems Connecting Device To Desktop Manager and Apploader.exe

Just got a new BB8900 last Friday. On Monday, I encountered a Reload Software: 552 error code and after checking online forums for options on how to fix I ultimately had to reinstall the operating system and reinstall new apps that weren't archived by the reinstall process. Because I feared getting this error again whenever I rebooted the device, I immediately made backups every hour as I was reconfiguring the device and adding back my apps.
Today I was going to do another backup for good measure and once I connected my Blackberry to the computer with Desktop Manager running, Desktop Manager crashed and gave me the following error:
    Problem signature:
    Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
    Application Name: DesktopMgr.exe
    Application Version: 5.0.0.11
    Application Timestamp: 4a4bd539
    Fault Module Name: DesktopMgr.exe
    Fault Module Version: 5.0.0.11
    Fault Module Timestamp: 4a4bd539
    Exception Code: c0000005
    Exception Offset: 000d68f5
    OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.768.3

    Additional Information 3: 83e8
    Additional Information 4: 72466a8a5092651f7fe609f9ec3f3489
I then tried the APPLOADER.EXE program locating in program files/common files/research in motion/apploader. I had used this program yesterday to try to delete applications 1 by 1 with the hope that one application was causing the 552 error. Now for some reason this program also is having a problem noting the following in the error log file:
Read from location 1010fffc caused an access violation.
I've looked through multiple forums and haven't found a solution. What I can tell you is this:
    1) The phone is working fine but I fear rebooting the phone and getting another 552 error (there were two apps deleted that will be fully deleted on reboot). Would hope everything is fine but I've had two of these 552 errors within 24 and the second one came without any warning. If I get this error there is no way to get to my backup since I can't connect to DM without it crashing.
    2) It doesn't appear to be a sync issue but I deleted the Intellisync folder anyway and it didn't fix the problem.
    3) Have rebooted my machine with no change to problem.
    4) Have reinstalled DM Version 5 (this time without the Roxio Media software) with no change to problem.
    5) Because I now get an error when connecting to DM and trying to run apploader.exe, there appears to be a setting on my phone that might be causing the problems (I have no idea what it may be but the APPLOADER program notes a location violation so maybe the Blackberry software is confused about where to find my Apps?)
    6) The BlackBerry device manager works fine and notes my device and applicable serial number.
After my last backup yesterday I probably only installed 3-4 other apps that I had lost and organized/moved folders around on the phone. So getting this problem so soon after everything was working fine is mindboggling.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Another Update:  I seemed to have found the problem.  While RIM support recommended I do a device wipe I pushed back since the rest of the phone functionality seemed to work fine.  I opted to begin removing applications from the phone one by one and then trying to connect to Desktop Manager.
Once I removed the ZDNet Tech News For IT Professionals and rebooted the phone, I was able to connect and do a backup. I'm sure this app works fine for almost everyone else, but for some unknown reason (maybe it conflicts with another app on my phone), Desktop Manager did not like it and shut down. I initially reinstalled it again and was able to do another backup but an hour later Desktop Manager shut down again (perhaps in doing an update on news it creates a conflict with Desktop Manager).
Anyways summary of learnings since my issue seemed to be somewhat uniqueCurve 8900)
    1) If Desktop Manager shuts down and you've tried other solutions on forums such as deleting the Intellisync folder and reinstalling Desktop Manager, try deleting applications 1 by 1 and rebooting the phone before trying to connect again to Desktop Manager.
    2) If you have had this problem, do frequent backups and keep track of what you add to your phone so in case there's a problem you know the most recent apps to remove (in my case I couldn't get to my latest backup since DM would shut down with the app conflict).
    3) Only consider a device wipe if you have exhausted your apps removal testing.  Apps which came on your phone which note the vendor in the About section of the app as RIM should be fine.  Also while apps on AppWorld are being offered by BlackBerry there is no certainty that they will work on your phone.

I've just discovered that with the newest version of iTunes you can no longer delete iPod Touch/iPhone apps you don't want.  You used to be able to do so by going onto iTunes on your desktop computer and deleting them.   Not Good!  I just called tech support and they said that in this version there is no way to delete them. They also said there have been numerous complaints about this.  You can't even delete them from your applications folder.  It's as though you're being held hostage to apps you tried, but do not want.
While we're on the subject, I don't like the fact the the iPod touch comes with unistalable apps such as: Passbook, Nike & iPod, Newsstand, and Game Center. Don't want them, will never use them.  Give customers the option to delete apps that we don't want.  Call Apple's corporate customer care. escalation, and complain untill they fix this.

  • DVD Burned from iDVD 6.0.1 plays on iMac but not a DVD player?

After burning a DVD production on DVD-RW and DVD+RW CDs and both directly from iDVD and by first creating a disc image. In all cases they worked on my iMac but none of them worked on the DVD player. Only the DVD+RW is compatible with the player and it appears the DVD starts to load but can not finish the process. Is there something I missed or is there a bug in iDVD 6.0.1?
The iDVD production was made from scratch using Magic iDVD and some video files. The Map has no errors and there where no error messages.

Is there something I missed or is there a bug in iDVD 6.0.1?
The bug is probably the format you're burning to...
Use DVD-R. I'd recommend Verbatim DVD-R burned at 4x or slower. I'll bet that will play just fine...as long as the DVD player is relatively new (2-3 years old).
