MBP DVD cannot write at full speed

Hi,
I've just bought a MBP 2.2. The spec says it has a 8x superdrive (8x at DVD-R) However, when I inserted a Princo DVD-R which is capable at 1-8x Burning, Toast 8 and System Profiler says it only capable to write at 1x 2x 4x.

This probably has more to do with the disc than the drive. I've never heard of Princo media, but if you try a high quality disc from Verbatim, it will probably write to it at 8x. The drive has to match the media to a burn strategy.
The question you have to ask yourself is, does it really matter? Write speed has huge implications on read reliability and data longevity. Personally I don't mind waiting a few more minutes for a disc which can be read reliably for many years! I also use Verbatim discs for the same reason - the dye they use is always reviewed very well.

  • 15 " MBP C2D fans running at full speed all the time

    hi
just purchased new MBP C2D 15 inch, the fans are running all the time at full speed (or at least sound noisy).
i know there were several updates on earlier machines but none for this one that i can see.
    SMC Version: 1.12f5.
    any idea's please.
    thanks

A very reasonable thought although it's clearly not DOA. Nor do we know whether it was bought as a CTO or not. The requirements for classing a system DOA are very clear and this system, while possibly not operating correctly, certainly is not a DOA.
I would however make every effort to determine the cause of the problem. Potentially the issue can be caused through software and no fault of Apple. Being able to quantify an issue does go a long way to resolving it.

  • DVD's will not burn at their full speed

I've had my powerbook for about a year now and haven't had any problems with it until now. I recently just purchased Phillips DVD-R 4.7GB 120min 1-16x speed blank DVD's. My powerbook will only write them (using built in utils, and 5 other 3rd party burning software) at 2x speed.
I know that my powerbook is capable of much more than that. What can I do to acheive the full write potential?

My HP HDX 9010nr can read CDs and DVDs, but it cannot write to a blank CD or DVD.
The machine came with the VISTA but I upgraded it to WIN 7 last year.

Hi,  you should definitely check to find out if the blank discs you are using are supported by your system. If the are you can try to run through troubleshooting the issue by using the troubleshooting tool on your unit and you can do this by following this directions:
    1.) Click on Start Button
2.) Type 'Troubleshooting"  into the start search or search programs box.
3.) Choose 'Troubleshooting' from the list.
4.) Run the troubleshooter for hardware and devices or audio and sound or playing and burning blue-ray, dvds and cds.
If this doesn't work you can also check your device manager to make sure that the drive is listed with no errors.

  • Cold MBP, exhaust fan running full speed

    Hello,
My 3mo old MBP exhaust fan has started running full speed (6200rpm), no processes or heat are to blame.
iStat pro say's the fan is currently at 6196rpm, highest temp sensor is at 30 degrees C.
Process monitoring says kernel_task using 160% of my two cores (interrupts?), this is a cause or a effect.
Reseting SMC had no improvement (unsure if I've managed to do correctly). Appart from that the machine works, very slowly, noisy, and very cold on my laps.
I'm on a business trip, don't have the diagnostic CD with me...
Any ideas so I can at least work during this trip ?
Thanks for your help, and for these forums.

    Hello folks,
I'm in the same situation, the only difference is my hardware from 2006:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro1,2
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 2,16 GHz
After running the ASD, I got this:
    +Temp Sensor - Palm rest L test 1 - Sensor Reads Within Operating Range.+
+-Check to ensure that sensor reads within operating range.+
    +ERROR - Unable to read sensor+
    +- T E S T F A I L E D -+
The sensor code is the same one from the post above: Ts0P.
So now, after looking for more than 4 hours on the internet, I couldn't find a clue.
What exactly is the location of this sensor?
Can someone please post a picture?
    How can i fix this?
    Thanks for everybody.

    THANKS!

Hi. No, not yet. Are those supposed to work? I tried KODAK and one that is chinese and sold locally as "maxprint". The strangest thing happened now: I bought 5 of those KODAK and only one of them started the process of burning. But it reported an error after burning 55% and crashed. So, chances are the problem is really with the discs? Not the burner?
    Thanks!

  • HT3728 I can't get the full speed of my internet

My internet is fiber optics and it's 100 mbps and when I do a speed test I only get 30 mbps, while if I connect direct to the internet without using the airport I got the full speed, there is something wrong with my airport and I did the reset but nothing happend.

You can install v5 utility in Lion..
How to load 5.6 into later Lion & ML
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.
But your AE must be v5 or earlier for this to work.
Exactly what Airport do you own??
And I am not sure it will fix the issue.

  • After fresh Mavericks Install Fans never stopped running on full speed. What to do?

    Hello
I had Mountain Lion installed this afternoon, but wanted to upgrade to Mavericks. I went the upgrade path through the Mac App Store, but after the install several things still weren't working properly (as they had been with Mountain Lion), so I erased the disk an reinstalled Mavericks from scratch. Now, at the time in Mountain Lion Finder kept freezing the MBP at 100% of one of it's cores, which heated up the CPU quite a bit. I therefore installed smcfancontrol to have quick access to a setting I called "Cool", essentially running both fans at full power. When I decided to reset the system, this setting was activated. Now, after the clean reinstall of Mavericks, the fans are continiously running at full speed (as in 5940rpm). In smcfancontrol I cannot set the fan speed lower than that, as it seems to be the system minimum now. I can't set them higher either, but if I choose the pre-defined "Higher RPM" setting, the fans manage a whopping 7k something. Didn't sound healthy though, so I'm keeping my fingers away from that.
Anyway, is there a way to reset the fan speed defaults?
    Specs:
    Model Identifier:          MacBookPro10,1
    Processor Name:          Intel Core i7
    Processor Speed:          2.7 GHz
    Memory:          16 GB
    SSD: 512 GB
[EDIT] I found out how to change the defaults of smcfancontrol (there are config files; ~/Library/Application Support/smcFanControl/Machines.plist for the machine "defaults" and ~/Library/Preferences/com.eidac.smcFanControl2.plist for the preferences)
Hope this helps anyone in the future, now I just need to find out what the default values are for a MBP =)

    I have a similiar problem.
I updated to Mavericks last night and now only one of my fans isnt working.
    I tried Smc reset.
I also have Istat Pro and I can see the right fan is not working.
Does Apple reply to problems here?

    Hi Again atadams77!
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, FastMac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue, the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade on them.

Once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
As has been posted, your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements.
If you install that, use the PPC 10.4.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.

  • Keyboard types in weird characters, x in battery, dim green charger light, fans at full speed, wont smc reset due to weird keyboard symbols

When I start my macbook pro 2012 intel 15inch, the fans run at full speed, the charger light is a dim green, my keyboard writes in weird symbols and the battery has an X in it. All the ports work and so does the trac pad so when i usb a keyboard it works but still types in the symbols. The language is set to English but my computer also shuts off after about 5min of being logged in. I do not think it is a board issue because my ports work and so does the keyboard and trac pad. It has to be software but I cannot reset it. What should I do?

  • One of my MacBook Pro's fans is running at full speed

Out of the blue today, my 2011 MacBook Pro started fans went mental when I awoke if from it's sleep. They started running at full speed, far louder than I've ever heard them before. I searched through other discussions and it suggested I try an SMC reset. I performed one of these with no success.
I then opened smcFanControl and noticed that my leftside fan was running at 7000rpm+ and the rightside fan was running at normal speed 2000rpm. It randomly spools on and off high speed and I cannot find any fixes or similar problems online. Can anyone suggest a fix for this or should I be taking it to a repairer?
FYI my logic board was only replaced in April under warranty so could it be faulty?

    Hi andyBall_uk
SMC fan control measures temp also. Currently running at 47*C as you can see in the screenshot below. I tried overriding the fan speeds...works for the right fan but not the left one so it appears only the left fan has the fault.
The weird thing is, when you press your finger down anywhere on the left speaker next to the built-in keyboard, the fan slows back down to normal speed, but when you let go it speeds back up again. I might open it up in the morning to see if any of the connections are loose, because it seems weird that this happens with a small amount of pressure applied to the body. Also of you tilt the macbook it sometimes slows back down to normal speed (but sometimes stays at high speed). I will let you know how I go. Thanks for your suggestion/s

  • Mac Pro will not boot, revs fans at full speed

    Hi,
I had my Mac Pro (2006 3.0 quad core) asleep, it woke itself up and didn't display video, instead revved the fans at full speed and did nothing, so I shut it down using the power button. When I turned it on, it did/does the same thing, no chime, no video to the displays, and I cant boot in safe mode or any other way, it wont even eject the DVD drive if I hold the mouse down.
    has anyone encountered this before?
    Any ideas?

Give the SMC button a kick, hold it in for 5-10 seconds. Hard to see, but hidden by drive #4.
Or try zapping PRAM/NVRAM first and see if that helps.

  • Fans on full speed when connected to TB-display

Whenever I'm using my thunderbolt display, the fans in my MBP (early 2011-model) goes up. Every 10 minute or so they ar on full speed (6200rpm), no matter what. It happens even when I'm not using any software, just watching my desktop
When checking iStat or Activity Monitor everything seems normal except for the fans.
Typical scenario every 10 minutes or so:
    CPU:
    User 3%
    System 2%
    Idle 95%
    Fans (both left and right):
    5800 - 6200 rpm
    System:
Processor  2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.3 (12D78)
Solutions I have tried without success:
    - reset SMC
    - reset NVRAM and PRAM
    - clean install of OS
    - both open and closed lid
    Any tips/help?
    H.

The temperature is about 145ºF like yours, so maybe it's normal. I have tried with both the lid closed and open.
What I find strange, is that my colleagues (all with basically the same set-up as me: MBP and TB-displays) dont have this problem. They have both older and newer MBPs than I have. We all work with the same kind of work and software.
Yesterday I also tried to connect my MBP to a normal PC-monitor (minidisplay -> VGA) and still the fans went crazy. I can't remember having any issue with before, and as I said: I am the only one in my office that have this issue.

  • Fans run full speed on stand-by and burner problem iMac 24-inch early 2009

In standby sometimes the fans are running at full speed. Also with burning some CD or DVD's the burner makes an awful grunting sound.
For a 2 year old Mac I did not expect to have these kind of problems!
Resetting the iMac does not help. Might this be a Lion problem?
Optical Drive is running at 4800rpm, normal 798rpm
Hard Drive at 5903rpm, normal 1599rpm
    CPU at 3598rpm normal, 1200rpm
The burning problem only happens sometimes, not with all.

What did you do to reset the imac? Problems like these are "sometimes" solved with an SMC reset.

  • Formatting Failed: Cannot Write Medium...

    Hi There,
I've been trying to burn a particular DVD now for some time. I've had nothing but problems with Compressor and DVDSP creating video artifacting (and yes, my audio is an AC3 file). This was never a problem in the older version though.
Anyways, I bought Sorenson Squeeze because it will encode MPEG 2 files as well as I need it for Flash. After I created a .MPV file from Squeeze I brought it into DVDSP and everything seems fine - until I went to format the disc I got the following error:
    Formatting Failed
The recording device reported the not ready error:
Cannot write medium - incompatible format (0x30, 0x05.)
I tried burning the disc in Toast and got a formatting failed error there too. I'm trying to burn picture only right now so there are no audio files to screw any of this up.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    K

    Hi Kristin:
Before trying to burn directly from DVDSP, did you build the project in your hard drive? I mean go to Format and select Destination > Output Device > Hard Drive. That will create an .img file (a DVD image file) that first: you can mount double clickig it and test it with DVD player, and second, you can take it and just drop into Toast icon (or drop the .img file into the Copy section of Toast)and burn the final video DVD.
In that way you use DVDSP for creating the complete final DVD structure and Toast to burn it. It could help in case that DVDSP doesn't "like" your media.
