MBP (early 08) shows VGA display when nothing plugged in

My macbook pro early 2008 shows VGA display when there is nothing plugged in. It performs just like there is an actual display plugged into it. I have run AHT and it tells me nothing is wrong. I have reset pram. I deleted all the prefs that relate to the video prefs. It actually works when i do plug a DVI-> VGA Adaptor, but when i plug the DVI-> Video adaptor in only the s-video works. Composite video ends up with out any luminance. My best idea is there is a pin jammed in there from one of the video adaptors, and it's somehow telling the system that there is an adaptor plugged in, but I'm open to trying anything right now. This computer was purchased 3 years and 1 month ago, so it's just out of apple care.

well it is a hardware issue, at least it has nothing to do with OSX. I did recently delete my bootcamp partition, and I know the windows version of the nvidea driver has a bit more control over things, I'm wondering if I should reinstall bootcamp to see if it is something in the Video Card's rom that Windows changed. I read that somewhere in a post on this board somewhere someone was able to easily change this problem in that driver.... why do you think AHT wouldn't catch the issue?

  • Objects show up even when nothing plugged into port - EEM Script

After a reboot my cisco shows the objects it tracks as up even when nothing is plugged into the interface used to track the objects. I have an EEM script that reboots the router 1 time when it finds that 4 dial numbers it round robins thru are unavialable and this works. The problem is after the reboot it see's the objects as available and re-inserts the reboot script and when they finally show down as they should be the reboot hapens over and over. Any Ideas on how to get the router to not show the tracked objects up after a reboot if the interface is down?

As I said in the other thread, I suspect the "delay down" is causing the behavior you are seeing.

  • Display prefs showing extra display when none are connected

I have a MacBook Pro and when I go to the display preferences it shows another display when no monitor is connected. I have searched the web extensively for a fix and haven't found anyone with the same problem. I'd prefer to just delete some obscure system file within OS X rather than reinstalling the whole OS just to fix the problem.
Anyone know of an easy way to get rid of the mysterious extra display?
    Thanks,
    Adam

I've just been reading this in the hope that my problem will be solved but realised that my problem is similar almost in reverse!
I have a Pioneer tv which I connected to my MBP several months ago using the MPB>mini DVI>DVI>HDMI cable route ... and all worked fine.
Today, when I connect the same items no luck. The only thing that happens is a brief flash of solid blue screen on MBP. I've tried all the resolution change tricks etc and no luck ... but here is the weird bit:
Even though I cannot get it to work, my MBP always shows "Gather Displays" as an option ... even when no display/cable connected ... if you click the ? button it suggests this button should only be available when more than one display is connected. Clicking it (or Detect Displays) does nothing.
So, my MBP seems convinced I have another display connected but won't let me see or use it. I don't even have the Arrangement tabs etc.
    Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any ideas!!

    Hi,
Try using Recovery Manager to reinstall HP Quick Launch Buttons - the procedure for using recovery manager to reinstall Software and Drivers is detailed in the relevant document on the link below.
    Recovery Manager - Windows 7
    Recovery Manager - Windows Vista
After the reinstallation has completed, restart the notebook.

Well plug it in again, and then hold the "Lock" and "Home" button at the same time for about 10 seconds. See if that helps.

  • MBP shows VGA display, but none connected

I am facing a quite strange problem. My MBP shows an external VGA display but there is none connected. I can see it in the display preferences. I already checked the hardware but there is nothing wrong with it. I connected a real display via dvi to vga and it works fine. Anyone who knows this problem and knows what to do about it?

    Found a possible solution.
    Do you have bootcamp installed?
I restarted into windows xp and checked my nvidia settings and made it was set to "Use One Monitor"
    Then restarted and Voila!
    Hope it can help

  • Computer falsely shows VGA display connected (reported by several)

--- From this thread (http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=68002) over at macosxhints ---
My 24" iMac (2006, the last white one) Core2Duo all of a sudden has started showing a "VGA Display" attached, which of course is impossible. From reading this thread it sounds like it's a motherboard issue? I rebooted into Win7 beta on my Boot Camp, and the imaginary screen also shows up there as an "analog display" which I can't remove.
I'm long since out of warranty, never bought AppleCare. Fortunately, so far the iMac is still usable, I'm not having the blue screen issues described earlier. I can go into Display Preferences and set the VGA Display to several different resolutions...I set it to 640x480. Clicking "Detect Displays" doesn't do anything. And I can change the Arrangement of the screens, and enable and disable Mirroring.
Very weird problem...thanks for any further comments, it's difficult to google this issue. At least I've backed up my data and am ready for it to die, if that's what is happening. Thanks.

You should consider taking the matter up with Apple before your warranty runs out. Problems like that are sometimes hardware related. It could be your Mac needs a motherboard swap.

  • Audio not switching to Display when I plug in USB

Normally, all audio automatically switches to the LED display speakers when I plug the USB connector into my MBP. It seems, after I manually switched the audio to my MBP once, this automatic switch doesn't happen anymore (I can still manually switch), and I can't find a way to reset it. Anyone experiencing this or know the answer?

I found a solution. If you delete the two preference files located in the folder noted below and restart, my macbook/ACD reverts to auto switching sound output the way I expect it to work. One problem, I can not change ANYTHING related to system sounds behavior in the sound preference pane or the lack of auto switching returns. I have not exhaustively tested which options are linked, but all I've tried make the problem return. However, I am able change the system volume using keyboard keys or the menu bar slider without the problem returning.

    YMMV

  • How to stop MBP with Retina from logging out when HDMI plugged in?

When I plug in my TV to the new HDMI out port on the MBP +Retina, the screen turns blue (like it used to on my Mac Air), the resolution changes, but then when the sceen comes back I am at the login screen. Not only am I logged out, but all my apps that were open were crashed (not quit).
Anybody experience this? How do I fix it?
    Thanks!
    Daniel

You're not alone.  For me ther'es no HDMI in use, it happens when it's not connected to anything.  At first I had thought it was tied into VLC since it happened consistently there at first, but for the last week it's been happening anytime, no VLC running.  I'm trying to track it down as well so while I have no resolution yet, at least you know you're not alone.  VERY frustrating since I do a lot of file work and hate it when it does this part way through a 20GB file copy...

  • How do I set MacBook to an external display when the plug and play doesn't recognize it?  I am trying to set my Samsung 530 LCD as a monitor but HDMI and VGA cords (and the adaptor for them) doesn't seem to work.

I have tried everything I can find on line but they all claim that the plug and play works, and they don't for me.  I tried the mini dvi to HDMI and a HDMI cord and that was not recognized no matter which unit I rebooted first.  I found someone who said that my Macbook might be too old for the HDMI technology so I returned the cords and went to the VGA cord and adaptor.
I tried this first with the HDMI setup:
    http://support-us.samsung.com/cyber/popup/iframe/pop_troubleshooting_fr.jsp?idx= 167919&modelname=LN40C650L1F&modelcode=&session_id=NDhJrD0DQT0Z8KRsm62yhxJxqnyPy SKhlhpB8vQ6h9Q7R2BZJGzj!-1089109758!1761676444!7501!-1!434477884!1761676348!7501 !-1!1292098185857
Then I tried this with the VGA setup:
    http://support-us.samsung.com/cyber/popup/iframe/pop_troubleshooting_fr.jsp?idx= 167901&modelname=LN40C650L1F&modelcode=&session_id=NDhJrD0DQT0Z8KRsm62yhxJxqnyPy SKhlhpB8vQ6h9Q7R2BZJGzj!-1089109758!1761676444!7501!-1!434477884!1761676348!7501 !-1!1292098185857
I contacted Samsung support and they said I needed to set the display settings to external display on the mac.  I went to the display settings and moved the icon to my status bar.  When I click on search for displays or whatever it says (I'm not at my Mac right now) it does nothing.
    What am I missing?

I am using MAC OSx 10.5.8 (9L31a) as my operation system.  The TV says "No signal.  Check connected device's power, cable connection and source selection."  Seems to me that that goes in hand with what the Samsung tech said about the Mac needing to be forces to use the external display.  But how do I do that?

  • Apple Mail 7.1 shows unread badge when nothing is there

Hoping for help - since upgrading to Mavericks, my "Unread" smart mailbox shows a "23" badge, but nothing in the folder. Nothing is hiden, and I've tried several things all to no avail:
    + Mail/Rebuild
+ Creating a new Smart folder for all unread - still shows "23"
+ checked the webmail version for anything "unread" - (nothing...)
    Thanks in advance.

Quit your mail entirely, then in terminal do:
    mv ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope* ~/Desktop
This moves all your "Envelope Index*" files to your desktop.  An alternative is deleting the files, but this allows you to keep them as a temporary back-up (you can delete them at-will later).  Also, you can move the files from Finder instead of Terminal, if you prefer.
After the files have been moved, re-open Mail
This should re-load all your email messages, updating/restoring the count
While this works, it does not explain the reason the count goes missing, nor does it ensure that the count won't go missing again in the future, but at least it's a temporary workaround.

  • Tunes only show on Ipod when Ipod plugged in to computer

I have restored the Ipod Nano twice, and now I have reloaded the tunes and photos. It shows the battery as fully charged and the tunes and photos both present when the Ipod is plugged in to the computer. I can play the tunes and look at the pictures. But, when the Ipod is unplugged from the computer, there are no songs or photos shown. The menu appears, but, otherwise, the Ipod appears empty.

You can copy the files back from the iPod and back them up once they are on your computer. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve information from the iPod.
