MBP Early 2009 17" HDD 'clicking'

I have a MBP 17" that was manufactured in early 2009 that is making clicking sounds. Originally the macbook made the noise constantly, a gentle click-click sound and not booting up. It just showed a grey screen with an icon that it could not find the files. After opening the base and holding the macbook close to my ear, I found that the hard drive was making the noise and replaced it with a brand new upgrade. Googling my problem also highlighted the fact that my old hard drive was one of those that was liable to a manufacturing defect that left the chemicals used during the disk manufacture process would break down after several years, rendering the drive useless. I then reloaded OSX and all seemed fine until after less than 2 months the noise started again. This time it only started after the PC had been on for several minutes. It also showed up with several messages that it needed the disk to be verified. When I click verify, the macbook would freeze and I would have to hold the power button to reboot the mac.
As my problem has once again reappeared, I am thinking that there could be a more serious underlying issue with the motherboard. I don't think that it is a problem with the memory based upon the MacBooks performance. Could anyone that has experienced this problem give me any further advice, before I go to the boss and explain the likely hood that a new MBP will have to be purchased, as a new logic board would cost over £500?

If I were you, I would probably take the machine to your local Apple Store and have them give it some testing and a diagnosis for repair. I'm betting that they will tell you that you need a new hard drive - and you very well might - but it's rather unusual to have two drives fail so closely together.
Which drive did you use for the replacement? There are some 'known bad' drives for Macs...

  • MBP early 2009 with lion installed can't load AHT!

My MBP early 2009 is crashing often--just seizing up, and mostly when I'm using wi-fi and then when I move the machine.
My theory is a bad wireless card. I'd therefore like to perform the Apple Hardware Test to see.
Sadly, I can't seem to find the right protocol to run it.
I don't have the original install discs that came with the machine, but I have tried using the install disc from an old iMac that has the AHT on it.
    but that's not working
    any ideas?
my MBP has Lion installed on it, by the way
    thanks!

    (blush)
I think I misspoke as to which version of MBP I have. I think I have a late 2008 MBP instead.
Does that make a difference?  I notice on the manual that came with this version (assuming I know which version I have) that I need only push "D" and AHT will load.  I'm about to try that.

  • New mbp early 2009

does someone have a compare test between the mbp late '08 and early '09

Hi, yoyoskk. Anything we can find, you can find just as easily yourself. Google is your friend.
I just checked the GeekBench results chart:
    http://www.primatelabs.ca/blog/2009/01/
(Scroll about 1/4 of the way down the page to the beginning of the Mac results.)
The new version of GeekBench that is compatible with the Early 2009 17" MBPs was just posted today, so there have been no results submitted yet for that model. But watch that page over the next couple of weeks and see what appears. Note that GeekBench only benchmarks CPU and RAM, not graphics performance.

  • MBP mid 2009 sudden HDD issues / slow and unresponsive

    Hello all,
First of all i want to apologize if there was a similar topic, but ive tried looking with no result. I am in a big crisis and i think this forum is my only way of finding a solution.
The problem started yesterday, when all of a sudden my computer became unresponsive (finder and apps), although music from itunes continued playing. I had no choice but to **** it down with the button.
When i turned it back on, i got the blinking folder with the question mark. Tried all the advice with no success. Then i opened the computer, checked the flex cable and the hdd which both seemed fine. Closed it back up, started it up again and the same story. Then i moved the computer after half an hour and the thing booted normally. The only obvious thing was that programs tended to freeze for a minute or two and i get the umbrella and then it works.
Since im a photographer i have lots of work on it and immediately bought an external hdd for backup. Time machine wasnt successful since it worked so slowly and it worked on intervals. 2 mins of copying, 5 mins of nothing and really slow ( the hdd graph in activity monitor showed continious spikes with a flat line inbetween. I gave up on that and now im copying the important stuff manually which seems to be working fine.
However the computer still has a big issue - i am hoping its the flex cable, since it suddey started working. In case of hdd failure i dont think i would be able to get back in and use it? The hdd is a year old, its the seagate hybrid - momentus 750xt and the os is mountain lion.
Does anyone have a clue or a tip what to do? I have to order the flex cable via ebay since there are no authorised deLers for apple that have spare parts available here in Lisbon, Portugal. Im afraid making a clean install wont help , although on a windows computer id do that the first thing..
Thanks a lot for any help, im desperate and i have a few weddings to edit this month, and since i study abroud this is the only xomputer i can use!
    Regards, Jaka

It does seem to be the internal cable or connection is faulty, but only on an intermittent basis.
My suggestion is to backup your data on an external HDD using Disk Utility>Restore or Carbon Copy Cloner.  This will create a drive that will enable you to boot your MBP and use it externally until you get your cable replaced.
    Ciao.

  • MBP (early 2009) won't wake from Display Sleep

My MBP has started to not wake from Display Sleep (the machine is not sleeping, only the display). The only way to get it back is to force power off by holding the power button down.
The weird thing is, when I power it on, it shows the 'loading RAM from disk' progress bar down the bottom of the all grey screen, as if the battery ran out. But I have it connected to a power source. Once it loads the RAM, the screen goes blank and it hangs. Another force restart and it boots to the login screen as per normal.
One thing I have noticed is that when this all happens (ie, when I try to wake it and nothing happens) the fans are on about medium speed and its very warm, as if there is some process thats causing high CPU usage and preventing the display waking. I usually have a few browsers open, iTunes, etc, nothing out of the ordinary.
I might try connecting via screen sharing next this happens to see if its responsive over the network -- i'll post my findings here.
I have screen saver with password protection turned on, and its connected to an external apple display.
    Has anyone else experienced this?

    Try a SMC reset.

  • 32 MB cache with the 1 TB HDD in early 2009 MP??

If you bought an Early 2009 Mac Pro with the 1 TB hard disk drive, what is the brand and model? I am most interested in knowing if the 1 TB HDD is a 32 MB cache or a 16 MB cache.
I believe you get your Mac Pro with the 640 KB HDD it's only with a 16 MB cache.
    Thanks!

Use System Profiler to look at your hard drives.
You can get to the profiler by running it from /Applications/Utilities, or by selecting "About This Mac" from the Apple menu and then clicking the "More Info..." button there.
On the left side is a list. Select "Serial ATA" and you'll get a list of your hard drives, completely with brand, model, serial number, and all kinds of information.

  • Win 8 USB + Early 2009 MBP = Issues!!

    Hey Everyone,
Seeing as I have installed Vista and Win 7 on this MBP I thought installing Windows 8 would be fairly straightforward. It turns out it has been hours, and hours of frustration.
I am going to lay out all my problems, and perhaps you guys can help me solve one, or hopefully all of them.
    Problem:
When I downloaded Windows 8 I opted to create a USB installation drive. This drive worked perfectly on my girlfriends PC, but when trying to use BootCamp, it simply doesn't recognize the USB drive, and so it won't partition the drive and continue with the installation.
    Attempted Solution 1:
I thought I would manually partition the HD into two (OS X - WIN 8), then boot from the USB. This worked, except when I get to the screen where I format the partition, it gives me an error and won't let me install. Even if I reformat the partition it won't allow me to go forward.
    Attempted Solution 2:
I read somewhere online that if you bring up the DOS prompt and do some manual formatting it will work, however it didn't seem to make a difference for me. It still wouldn't allow me to install it.
    Computer:
    Macbook Pro (17" - Early 2009)
    4GB
    OS X 10.8.2
I really appreciate any help or advice you can provide.
    CLM

You can only install Windows from a USB drive on Macs without SuperDrive (MacBook Air, Late 2012 iMac, Mid 2011 or newer Mac mini, and MacBook Pro with Retina display). If you try to install Windows from a USB drive on other Macs, it won't be detected.
Also, Windows 8 isn't compatible with Boot Camp, so you should wait until Apple launches updated Boot Camp drivers, or install Windows 7 on your computer

  • Whether or not to change stock thermal paste on early 2009 unibody 17" MBP CPU?

I have a first generation (early 2009) unibody 17" MBP, now out of warranty / Apple Care. It's been working fine in general, however I've been increasingly concerned about the CPU temps when I encode with Hand Brake, and some times when doing things in VMWare (Win XP) and in OS X at the same time. Under those two sets of circumstances, my CPU temp (as read out by iStat Menus 3) routinely hits 100 C. (I've never seen it hotter than 102 - 103, it'll hang around 100 for a while, then eventually cool down to mid 90's as a new equilibrium seems to be reached. Will hang there until the processor intensive task is done, then quickly cool off.) Generally idles in the 40's.
I've looked and looked, and found no reassuring consensus on whether or not changing the stock Apple glob of thermal grease for a thin application of Arctic Silver will help this situation. I've found as many no's as yes's on the matter, and about as many different views on the details of MBP cooling as posters expressing them.
So, what I'm really looking for is whether or not anyone's collected a lot of data points on the subject, and can paint any sort of trend based upon a large denominator of users reporting their experiences. I did find links to a website that apparently did this in 2005, or thereabouts, but all those links are dead, and that was well before the dawn of the unibody anyway.
Was wondering if anyone knew of a source of knowledge on this issue that draws from more than educated hypothesis, or one's own experiences.
I'm already planning on routinely jacking up the fan speeds when doing these CPU heavy tasks, and I elevate the computer off the table to help with ventilation. Also, I've seen several people say that the CPU was made to handle these temps, however, I looked at the Intel data sheets on these processors (<http://download.intel.com/design/mobile/datashts/32012001.pdf>, page 102), and the max tjunction temp is 105C, which I'm getting awfully close to whenever I encode.
    Thank you!
early 2009 17" MBP (very good condition)
    2.93 Core 2 Duo
    8 GB RAM
    750 GB HD
    latest Lion

I say go for it. About a year ago I had to replace the fan system on my old Dell i8200. To do that I had to take the complete system apart. So while I had everything out of the case, laying there in pieces/parts (including taking the heatsink system completely off the CPU/GPU) I cleaned everything and applied Arctic Silver to both CPU/GPU. System ran cooler then the first day I took it out of the box new.
Personally I would disregard the comment above. Yes you can use WAY to Much thermal paste but if you cover the complete CPU with a thin even layer (even if it is a little to much) it will still work fine, as long as you move the heatsink around when resetting it to even it all out.
From reports from other Mac users, the one that have Baked there logic boards to fix the 2008 NVidia problem that Apple refuses to stand up for, that when they took there systems apart there was thermal paste everywhere. Clearly Apple assemblers think that if a little is good a whole bunch is better. Which isn't the case. But what do they care. The assemblers need something like Macdonald's has for dispensing Ketchup. One squirt and you always get the same amount.
    Go For It.
    Good Luck.

  • Early 2009 17" MBP doesn't see new SuperTalent SSD

Just installed the SuperTalent MasterDrive RX 512 GB SSD in my early 2009 MBP 17". I was originally worried about the drive fitting in the machine since it is 12.mm tall, but that was not a problem. It fits snugly but it does fit.
My problem is that the machine doesn't see the drive. I have taken it out and put it in an external USB enclosure and was able to create a GUID partition map and mac os extendend journaled partition. Then put it back in the MBP to see if that helped. No luck, the disk utility still can not see it but the System Profiler does identify it in the SATA area.
Here is some info about my MBP from system profiler if it helps anyone: Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 6 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP52.008E.B00
    SMC Version (system): 1.42f4
Anybody out there able to get this SuperTalent drive to work in a similar MacBook Pro?
    Thanks in advance,

OK, I think I have figured this out. It is an odd process but it does get me to where I want to be. I ran acorss another forum post where someone had the same issue with a different SSD. They said that their problem was resolved by installing OSX on the SSD while it was connected via USB. I didn't think the setup DVD would install the OS to an externally connected drive but it did. So, I installed the SSD back inside my MBP and it booted into it just fine. At this point I'm feeling pretty good because the machine is running on the internal SSD. My next step was to boot to the setup DVD again and restore from my Time Machine backup to the SSD. This didn't work either. Amazingly enough, even when you can boot the machine and run on the SSD, the disk utility and restore utility still can't see it.
Next step was to take the disk out of the MBP again, put it back in a USB enclosure, boot to the setup DVD (no hard drive or SSD in the machine at this point) and then restore from time machine disk to USB connected SSD.
This is in process now and will take a while. My Time Mahchine image is about 330 gigs and is having to cross two USB connections. Current time remainig for the restore is showing about 13 hours. So I will check on it in tomorrow and then put the SSD back in the MBP and fire it up.
I think this will be OK... (Fingers crossed)
Will post another update tomorrow with the results.

  • Can I install a Hybrid HDD SSD drive in my Macbook early 2009?

I was thinking of installing this new drive into my 13-inch White MacBook early 2009 edition.  I have read community pages stating it should be fine so long as i do not go over 9.5 mm height and is a 2.5 inch SATA.
    http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Momentus-Solid-Hybrid-ST95005620AS/dp/B003NSBF32/r ef=reg_hu-rd_add_1_dp
But I would rather be safe than out all the cash.
Please let me know if this is a good decision.  (Note I am not high on cash at the moment and am using some winnings from a hackathon to purchase the item.)

I installed one in an early 2008 MacBook 4,1 and it worked perfectly.....I would expect the same results for the early 2009.....

  • Early 2009 MBP 17" Hardware Issues

    Hi
    Brief :
I'd like to know what i can do to get my hardware problem fixed, I've taken it to an apple service center twice and things are moving VERY slowly, Its been almost 2 months.
    More details :
I've recently upgraded from my 2008 17" Macbook Pro which worked perfectly to an early 2009 17" Macbook Pro with 8gb of ram from the apple store.
With this new macbook, I have had many many OSX lockups where the screen turns grey and it tells me to hold down the power button in several languages.
It also fails to resume from suspend almost all of the time, I'm having to reboot and restart all my applications almost every day which is a pain when i have about 5 virtual machines running (using parallels).
I have all the latest software updates.
My 2008 macbook pro went for 17 days once with out a reboot and i expect equal relyability from this one.
I have taken the macbook to the service dealer in hamilton, new zealand twice, Each time they have run tests on it and passed the information to Apple Australia to figure out. The second visit was at the request of apple australia.
I can reproduce the suspend problem by running a CentOS Virtual machine running oracle and then executing a large query in it. The VM is allocated 2gb of ram. With out fail, every time i do this and then suspend the machine, It will not resume.
When can i pursue this problem further?
Is there an apple web site that will give me details on how my call is progressing?
Should i expect this kind of poor service from Apple when one of their products doesn't just work?

Actually, this is not all that hard to take care of. You probably have a bad memory chip. This often results in the type of kernel panic that you are experiencing. You can try the Apple Hardware Test. Try the extended memory test. If I recall, you need to hold down the option key to enable it.
One of the chips is likely the culprit. The hard part is finding the bad chip. Strangely enough, you may have times when the system flies along without hitting the faulty address, and then all of sudden, when you do, it causes the message you are receiving. Is the memory third-party, or did you get it from Apple when you bought the machine?
I have run into these same issues in the past. I had an old Powerbook G4 167 mhz that did not exhibit a failing memory chip until after upgrading the system software. Once the memory was replaced, no more issues.
    Good luck!

  • Early 2009 iMac is running very slow

My early 2009 is running very slow.  Takes about a minute to open Safari upon start-up....even opening up folders from finder take a long time.  Get the spinning beachball often.  Opening websites takes 30-40 seconds sometimes....they do open eventually.  I have run permissions repair from Disk Utility. Our iPad has no such problems.  iMac is hardwired, iPad is wireless.  I ran a report with "EtreCheck" but don't really understand what it is telling me.  I have about 100GB of space left out of 300GB.  Will attach "EtreCheck" report if I can figure out how!
Thanks so much for any help!  Only recent changes I have made is upgrading iPhone and updating Charter Cable Security Suite.

I am having the same issue. I am going through some of the things listed above. When doing the Go To Folder portion of the Adware tutorial none of those files existed on my iMac. I will do the rest but was wondering if you can see any clear problems from my EtreCheck report. Thanks!

  • Mavericks upgrade : Macbook (early 2009) running Snow Leopard (10.6.8)

    Hello,
I have a Macbook (early 2009) running Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and want to upgrade to Mavericks.
I have upgraded to 4GB RAM and replaced the HD for an SSD. It works perfectly.
Now the issue comes with Mavericks upgrade.
The App Store offers me to upgrade to Mavericks but when I click on the Upgrade button, a message prompts it can not install Mavericks on this machine.
I am confused. Any idea on what I should check ?

    Toffe13,
Are you very sure of the exact mode (year etc), just saying as the requirements are:
"MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)"
    If so...
Then have you tried reinstalling the 10.6.8 updates (combo 1.1) - http://support.apple.com/downloads/#10.6.8
    Also...
I assume you've ran a full sweep of Disk Utility to clear any permissions issues etc. (rarely helps, but still)
Maybe provide a little more info on what you've tried thus far, I.E. is this a fresh install from your DVD's etc. or a migration from HDD to SSD etc.
    Thanks

  • IMac early 2009 with Yosemite running really really slow

    Hi,
Would appreciate some expert advice on this. My iMac has been extremely slow and lag-gy the past few months. Noticeable after I upgraded to Yosemite (perhaps not the smartest thing I did last year).
What should I do now? Upgrade RAM? Free up hard drive? Buy a new computer?
    thanks
    Kenneth

When you have the slowdown, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • How can i install 8 gb ram on a mac mini early 2009 when it says i dont need the EFI firmware 2.1?i can only install 4 gb but the side of OWC says i can install 8 gb? what to do?

i have a mac mini early 2009 and i want to install 8 gb ram but it doesn,t work.
it says on the OWC site that i have to install the EFI firmware 2.1 update but it won,t let me,it says(the mac mini)that i don,t need this update.
my kernel is 32bit but my EFI is 64 bit,how can i install 64 bit so i can use the 8GB cause with 32 bit i can,t use more than 4gb ram

    Check your computer's EFI Boot ROM version;
    1. From the Apple () menu, choose About This Mac
    2. Click More Info Under Contents
    3. Select Hardware
    If your Mac mini's Boot ROM version is the following or more recent, then you do not need the update to use 8 GB of RAM;
    Boot ROM Version: MM31.0081.B06
