MBP EFI Firmware Update 1.7 won't run

We have several MBP's (13 & 15) on Firmware 1.47f2 that will not take the 1.7 update. The installer says it is not needed. Any ideas?

Are you saying that they the update is showing up in Software Update... or are you trying to download and install it that way? I would think that all 13" MB Pros would have shipped with at least 1.6 on them.
Also... have you upgraded any of the hard drives in these machines (meaning have you purchased third party drives and installed them)? This won't be the reason for your update problem, but 1.7 doesn't seem to like third party drives.

  • EFI Firmware Update 1.2. won't install

I can't find exactly my problem but some threads are close. I keep getting software updates for EFI Firmware Update 1.2.
I shut down, then startup holding on-button until it flashes, release, buzz buzz, chime, then very briefly the apple logo and status bar, then gone, buzz buzz, chime and restart. After everything loads, there is the update window with install instructions, telling me to repeat if I see them, to no avail (tried several times over several weeks). My HD appears to be correctly partitioned, with this boot ROM: IM51.0090.B03 which would seem to indicate the update has not happened. I have unplugged all my peripherals (printer, zip drive) but not DSL modem.
    any ideas?
    thanks in advance

I would delete the firmware updater that is in your Utilities folder and check your account settings(System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items) to see if it has been added to your login items. If so then remove. Re-run your software update and see if the Firmware update shows up again. If so then download and try again. According to Apple your BootROM should be IM51.0090.B09 after the update.

  • Macbook pro EFI firmware Update 1.4 won't work, neither will software

I got two probs, not sure how related they are.
#1 is that I can't successfully do the macbook pro EFI firmware Update 1.4. My computer was bootcamped and kept restarting in windows - thus the update was not completed - the completion bar would pop up for an instant - i could not see if it had completed, i don't think so... and then it would flash back to black, and restart again. Upon restart the firmware update was still there as needing to be updated.
I've now taken bootcamp off and restored a single drive. It's doing the same thing and hasn't updated.
#2 is that DVD studio pro will not boot anymore after it has been working with no problems for over a year. Nor will Motion run although it has never worked. I have tried reinstalling multiple times and just today went to delete the preferences. No luck.
Any suggestions or better yet, solution, I'm ever so grateful.
    Cheers

I have the same problem. It's also important to note that, in my case, I'm running 10.7.2 (11C74), but it's a firmware update, so it shouldn't really matter if I'm running a beta version of Lion, should it?

  • I just applied an EFI firmware update to a intel core 2 duo macbook, now it won't boot up

After applying an EFI firmware update, the Macbook just spins the optical drive when I start it up!  I didn't see any indication that the EFI firmware update had any problems, so I'm stumped!

And if you can't get in, you can't read the Boot Rom version…
I suspect the update may have been OK for the MB but not for the OS version.
Unfortunately I have no idea if it's even possible to roll back a firmware update, or to maybe install a later OS like 10.6 while it's in that condition.
Bigger guns than me needed here, I'm afraid.

  • MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.5.1

Just seen this as available from the software update process on my MBP.
has anyone hand any problems with MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.5.1 updates?
    thanks!

I believe it's been traced to the video card not properly initializing after sleep. It normally happens to me when I have USB peripherals attached (Such as my iPhone for charging).
After sleep the screen simply won't turn on. You can hear the volume adjusting, even music or something playing on the computer (As if it's running normally) but the screen just stays black. Sometimes it will flash on and then turn off.
The only solution I've found is to hard reboot the computer.

  • HT1237 Searching for an EFI Firmware update to enable Lion Internet Recovery on MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)

    Hi All,
My Mid-2010 Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch started having random kernel panics lately (more than 1 month of random kernel panics now), usually associated with request such as "open new tab in Safari" etc.
Since I installed 2x4GB RAM modules from Crucial when I bought my MBP (they are +- 2 years old now) and also exchanged my DVD-drive for an extra SSD that now runs the system (fully updated 10.7.4) I have a feeling that those kernel panics might be HW related.
I wanted to run Apple Hardware Test but found out that it is no longer supported on Lion. Since I don't have any optical drive to install AHT from (also I don't have the CDs with me atm), I found out that I can install an EFI Firmware update that enables internet-based (?) AHT.
At http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4904# , the link from MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) links to MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.6 which is for Early 2010 models only and doesn't allow me to run the installation process. I'm looking for an EFI update to enable Apple Hardware Test on my Mid-2010 Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch.
Is there an update that can do this? Is there a wrong hyperlink on Apple page or am I searching for a wrong update?
Also, even though this should probably be in a separate topic, can anyone please point me to the right direction for a good Apple Kernel Panic how-to-read-those topic?
Thank you very much in advance.

    Hey Cris from London,
I would try out the recommended steps in the following link:
OS X Mavericks: If your Mac runs slowly

Let us know if any of the steps within resolved the issue.

  • MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update - sw update now

sw update offered it just now, applied. airport icon on top taskbar missing on reboot, but easily reapplied.
    will monitor.

Now I am just numb. I should state that I have a 17" MBP (stock). It refuses to shut down (I have to hold the power button down). I have already burned and tried the EFI recovery CD with no success. I can't even do a simple reboot! It clears my dock and menu bar and the regular cursor just stays up all the time. I've let it sit for over 10 minutes hoping for a restart or shut down.
When the machine does boot (after hard stop and start) it always reverts to the EFI Firmware Update 1.2 screen.
    Anyone else having issue?

  • MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.2

Do the New MBP Core 2 duo's need the new MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.2? I do not see it in Software update.
    Thanks

It probably comes shipped with 1.2 pre-installed.

  • EFI firmware update 1.4 killed my ethernet connection

Trying to set up my sister's new 20" iMac.
It came preinstalled with 10.5.6. We hooked it up to her cable modem with an ethernet cable, it got a DHCP'd IP address, I immediately ran software update and it downloaded a slew of stuff. After the initial update and restart, it went into the firmware update procedure for EFI Firmware Update 1.4. After the update we got the expected loud beep and restart, but now the ethernet connection is dead.
The computer claims the ethernet cable is not plugged in - network diagnostics says it can't do anything - to contact our network admin.
I tried another cable, I tried recreating the "Ethernet" connection in Sys Prefs->Network and also tried creating a new connection with ethernet but ethernet remains stone dead.
    Anyone see this before?
Jeez, this thing only worked for like an hour :-/

    Solved:
Tried 2 ethernet cables and all ports on the router with no luck.
Reset the PRAM with no luck.
Tried another router port - success!
Some experimenting reveals that the router port the computer was plugged into at the time of the EFI 1.4 update is now dead. It was working fine up til the firmware update but now won't work with any combination of cables or computers.
The iMac connects fine over ethernet to all of the other router ports with all 3 cables we have here.
Weird. I cant imagine that the firmware update somehow killed the ethernet port on the router. Timing sure is strange tho.

  • EFI Firmware Update 2.0, extended "bang" sound natural?

I ran software update this morning and installed an MBP mid-2010 "EFI Firmware" update.
    Here's the link:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1331
On start-up, I first heard an extended "bang" sound and the usual start-up chime then followed by a progress bar and not the usual spinning object.
    Are these normal?

hey there I ran software update this morning as well and installed the MBP mid-2010 "EFI Firmware" update and the safari update. On reboot there was a loud extended beep sound. Everything seem to work normal. Does anybody know where did this came from, and if it is something to worry about. thx in advance

  • Can't install new MacBook EFI Firmware Update 1.2

Hi all. I've tried to update to the newly released MacBook EFI Firmware Update 1.2, but when I go to run it, it says that my MacBook doesn't need updating. I know that I'm on the older 1.0 Firmware with Boot ROM Version MB21.00A5.B07. Any guesses as to why this new update won't run on my MacBook? It's supposed to be for all versions. Thanks for your help.

Are you getting this update from the automatic updater? If not, you don't need it and you certainly don't want it.
Unlike software updates, one should never attempt to install a firmware update that is not specifically designed for that machine. Downloading and attempting to install firmware that is not correct can result in corrupted EFI and the need for the firmware restore CD.
You did make a firmware restore CD as instructed, I hope. It's the first step.

  • HDD clicking after EFI Firmware Update 2.7

After I did the EFI firmware 2.7 update and the my macbook pro restarted, I noticed that I started to hear a clicking noise from my laptop. At first, I thought it was a normal sound that I may have not heard before but I checked my other laptops and they aren't making any noise close to this. The other two laptops I checked were also early 2011 models, one 13" and the other is 15".
Here is the recording of the sound.
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/108564/iPhone/Memo.m4a
There is some background noise but that clicking sound is the sound I hear. This is recorded with my 4S with the mic hovering around the palm rest and trackpad. I also noticed that when I tilt the laptop, I can hear a grinding sound. I tried to replicate this grinding noise on my other MBPs but I can't replicate it.
What is the best option for me? If I take it to Apple, would they actually be able to replace it for me or resolve the issue? I don't want to waste my time driving 45 minutes to Apple just so they can say it's "normal". Has anyone had this issue before and taken it to Apple?

Pretty nasty, sounds quite regular. Drives don't make that sound normally, sounds defective.
What is your machine specs, opeating system version etc.?
If your drive is grinding, that's a sign it's going to die soon, so you need to backup immediatly.
EFI 2.7 might not be the sole cause, especially if others don't come forward and report the same issue, but might have attributed to something pre-existing.
There has been a unusually high number of issues with the latest EFI firmware updates, why I don't know.
Perform a hardware check, rule out anything else.
    http://www.cbscores.com/index.php?sort=ogl&order=desc
You might have a warranty call if the drive is failing.

  • MBP C2D Firmware update help

Currently my MBP C2D has firmware of Boot ROM Version:MBP22.00A5.B00
and SMC Version: 1.12f5. When attempting to update the firmware to the most up to date version it states "this computer does not need to be updated" even though it does not have the most current version. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I too experienced the same thing, and was equally puzzled. Then I read this Special Report about the MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.2 at MacFixit. There, rather buried away in a paragraph towards the end, is this statement:
Not required for Core 2 Duo MacBook Pros Note that (although Apple makes no mention of the fact) EFI Firmware Update 1.2 is not applicable to Core 2 Duo-based MacBook Pros.

  • I downloaded and installed the: Mac mini EFI Firmware Update 1.6 on my mac mini running 10.8.1, was I correct in doing this ?

I downloaded and installed the: Mac mini EFI Firmware Update 1.6 on my mac mini running 10.8.1, was I correct in doing this ?
I didn't see this update come up in "Software Update"
If I was not meant to install this update, would it cause ANY damage at all to my mac ( this is my second as I dropped the first )
If I were to re-install ML would this fix any errors that this may have caused ?
The bottom of the page I link to says:
Boot ROM or SMC Version Information: MM51.0077.10
But when I click on "About this Mac" it says:
    Boot ROM Version:          MM51.0077.B10
      SMC Version (system):          1.75f0
What does the additional "B" mean?
My mac mini is the Mid 2011 Model.
I am sorry if I am sounding super paranoid about this, but I don't want to have caused any permanent damage.

    Hello,
It's somewhere between almost impossible & impossible to install the wrong EFI Update with all the checks it does!
Mac mini (Mid 2011) with Intel graphics
    Macmini5,1
    MM51.0077.B10 (EFI 1.6)
Mac mini (Mid 2011) with Radeon graphics
    Macmini5,2
    MM51.0077.B10 (EFI 1.6)
    Mac mini Server (Mid 2011)
    Macmini5,3
    MM51.0077.B10 (EFI 1.6)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
Not sure what the B means.
If I were to re-install ML would this fix any errors that this may have caused ?
No, Firmware is unaffected by any OS change or re-install.
