MBP fan behavior question
Hi,
Looking to (finally) upgrade my Powerbook G4. This is a very quiet machine, and the fans only kick in when editing video, playing games, etc. So I am wondering...
Is it true that the new Macbook Pro fans are on all the time? Are there any models which don't run fans constantly?
Thanks.
JP
Logicboard failure may be more due to people not understanding how the cable ports are right on the logicboard.
Blame it on user behavior? Hmmm. Given the discussion about all the heat the MBP can potentially produce, I'd be more inclined to think along the terms of it being a heat issue. One of the problems with the G5 logic board was a problem where an area of the board (solder connection?) became damaged from repeated expansion due to heating up and cooling down. (Multiple users confirmed this issue and even demonstrated how heating the area up with a hair dryer would temporarily restore the connection.)
If there is a problem, I would put my money on the logic board not being built hardy enough to withstand the extreme conditions of life in a laptop computer (rapid heating and cooling cycles).
But anyway, AFAIK, that's all speculation in regards to recent MBP models. I'd be curious to see some links to discussions regarding problems people may be having with logic boards in these computers.

well, I have notice while the room is empty and quit that the MBP Fans working so I got curious
I closed every application and Fans still working...
I restarted the OS and no application is running, still Fans working at 1999-2000 rpm
is that normal the Fans always working in no matter what condition the MBP is in?The fans are on continuously to cool the Intel microprocessor and other components. If they weren't always "on", your machine would burn up by the heat created from the Intel chip. There are thermal detectors in your machine monitoring the components and controlling the speed of the fans. Therefore, on a hot day you'll probably notice the fan noise more; and on a cool day, less so.

i downloaded microsoft office to my MBP and my question is how do i get the right file or operating system to open it and so that i can use it?
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
There are two Office versions: Office for Windows, and Office for Mac.
I suspect that you have downloaded Office for Windows, and you can use it if you install Windows, but a cheaper and easiest way to use Office is to use Office for Mac, so you won't have to install Windows. See > http://www.microsoft.com/mac -
New MBP retina migration question
If I buy the new MBP I prefer to use the new thunderbolt - firewire dongle for migration assistant in target disk mode since they have eliminated the firewire port. However, this dongle is not yet available and a search shows MB air owners have been waiting for over a year for Sonnet's Allegro dongle to come to market. Sonnet puit out it's first Marketing release on this product April 11 ,2011, over a year ago! I think it is optomistic to expect it to appear anytime soon.
So option 2 is to get the thunderbolt - ethernet dongle and use migration assitant from my Time Capsule to my new MBP. The question is how much longer would it take to move 120 GB of data using ethernet versus firewire and are there any difficulties using this method? I have had really good luck using target disk mode in past times and am hesitant about going from the time capsule.http://www.macworld.com/article/1160887/targetdiskmodethunderbolt.html

These aren't what I originally read, but they do support my assertion. -
Sporadic high-speed fan behavior ––– removing battery solves problem?
Every so often, my fans will peg around 6,000rpm, even though the operating temp is around 120º – not nearly hot enough to trigger such fan action. I check Activity Monitor and nothing is hogging the CPU (Safari 5.0, kernel_task 3.3, pmTool 2.6, configd 2.4, etc. – these are pretty typical readings.) The % Idle is usually around 90%.
I just discovered that removing the battery solves the problem. Just one minute later, my fan speed is at 2003rpm.
It's driving me nuts, and (of course) when I take it to the Genius Bar, it won't replicate the problem.
Any ideas? While I'm not sure what may be causing your sporadic fan behavior, running your MacBook Pro with the battery removed causes the system to significantly reduce the processor speed. That is probably why your system is running cooler with the battery removed... not because of any fault with the battery itself:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2332
You may want to reset your System Management Controller (SMS). The link below provides the details. Among the things this will address are fans that run at high speed although the computer is not experiencing heavy usage and is properly ventilated. Be sure to follow the instructions specific for your machine as they vary slightly from model to model.

So tonight I wanted to see how much it takes to get the MBP fans running, as I've never, ever noticed them before. I wrote a Python script that uses 100% CPU, and ran it twice (once for each core). I started at 51C, and it quickly jumped up to 75C within 60 seconds of running the scripts. It got to 79C, and then I felt (but not heard) the fans come on. The only indication I had that they were running was the vibration they made. The temperature hovered around 73C.
But this is the interesting part. I lifted my MBP up so I could bring it closer to my ears. and all of a sudden I couldn't feel the fans anymore, and the temperature immediately spiked back up to 79C. When I leveled it out, the fans came back, and the temperature went down. If they turned off because the back vent was suddenly more open, why did the temperature spike? I can't think of anything.
Can anyone else confirm this, or am I just losing my mind? They're treating you as such because to Apple it IS
well within specs. Some guy complained about his
computer going all the way 90 (almost boiling) and
apple said same crap and ur complaining w/ 79, thats
all.
Yeah, heat is bad and Apple's paste-happy techs could
be partly to blame but, it is still "within specs".
I wonder how wide those specs are...
I was ready to buy a new Macbook Pro but after reading about all these heat issues and an undeclocked GPU and whining sounds I've been having second thoughts. I did find this spec sheet http://www.intel.com/design/intarch/coreduo/coreduo_spec.htm on the Intel website which does state that the core duo will run from 0-100c.
That being said I still think that temperatures approaching 90c is still too close to the wrong end of the specification. Surely the hotter it runs it must affect performance/lifespan. Does anyone know if the new Macbook Pros (released with the Macbooks) have addressed these heat issues and if they are still underclocking the GPU? (and 0-100c, I'd like to see one running at 0c, maybe in a blizzard whilst trekking the arctic circle) -
Hello to all
My MBP fans run on and off (normal I know) EXCEPT they at times run while NOTHING is happening, the computer is idling, no software is running, and its not hooked to the internet, no ambient heat, so what gives? Should I be concerned?
Your input and expertise would definitely be appreciated.
Thank you
R.If by 'all is off' you mean you have no active applications, that doesn't mean everything is off. Dashboard widgets, menu bar items, and system processes may still be running. Spotlight may be indexing a hard drive. Lots of possibilities.
Check Utilities > Activity Monitor > CPU tab, set the pop-up menu to Active Processes (or All Processes, but not My Processes since that won't show everything), click on the CPU column to sort, and see if anything is using a high amount of CPU capacity. -
Hello
My 15" MBP fans run constantly at around 6000 rpm (very loud and annoying), is there any way in which I could manually slow down the fan speed?
I have tried SMC fancontrol and doing both SMC and PRAM resets.

MBP Fan Speed/Temp and one extra problem.
My 17" MBP fan is almost constantly running at the max speed (6000 rpm). The temp is at 75 C as well. Since i'm in school the loud fan speed it very annoying and I would like to know if I have a problem with either my temp sensors, logic board or fans.
My other problem is that I get two error messages saying that a usb port is drawing too much power and will be deactivated. I have 3 usb ports my two left ones do not work and only my right one functions.
Any help would be great.
~ JustinOne thing to do is to run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test and see if anything shows up in the form of an error code. If you get an error code with "SNS" in it, that would indicate that a thermal sensor is either not working or possibly not plugged in. If a sensor is not working, the fans will run all out by default.
Another thing to check is Activity Monitor for an out of control process which is hogging the CPU. Open Activity Monitor and select "All Processes" at the top and "CPU" on the bottom bar. Then peruse the CPU column for any process hat is running amok. If you find one, then highlight it and quit it and see if that takes care of the problem. Sometimes a printer process will hang up and hog the CPU, but it could actually be almost anything.
Regarding the USB ports, you can try to reset them. Power down and remove both the power adaptor and the battery for 15-20 minutes. Then power up again and see if they work. If your USB devices are drawing too much power from your USB ports, you may want to try a powered USB hub.
Good luck! -
Cooling Fan issue/Questions
Hello there I will try and explain this whole story as best as I can. First off, I know my way around computers, I am going to school for them. Asking for help is a last stretch for me... but I need to learn when to ask for help inorder to learn from my mistakes. This laptop is a HP Pavillion DV7. List of replacement parts for this laptop can be found here.I have done as much research as I can on the issue. So let me explain my situation. As a gamer, I know I stress out my laptop a lot. at 2.2ghz, it doesnt do much, but its 8mb L3 cache allows me to play quite a lot, not to mention what I gather from sources, my processor itself determines it should turboboost itself to 3.1ghz when it is under a heavy load. ( If this information is not true, then I will have to look into those sources again ) I have to admit, I do leave my computer on. I administrate gameservers and Teamspeak servers quite often, and gain access to the computers using the internet from my house to help fix the problems. I know I am not suppose to, but I leave it on so that I have the convience of looking into issues first hand and help the community owners as quickly as possible. I feel this is why I am having the issue I am. On Monday morning, a regular morning to wake up, first thing I do is check computer for any messages. The top left hand side of the computer is hot. Normal, since this is where the processor is in the laptop. The bottom part however never truely is. It got slightly warm, enough for me to take a notice. I turned computer off to let it rest so no problems had occured. a nice 30-45 minute rest. Laptop became room tempature at touch so I proceeded to turn it on. Upon doing so, I got a message The system has detected that a cooling fan is not operating correctly.Continued operation is not recommended and may cause unpredictable behavior that could result in random shutdown, data loss or possible system damage. The system will shut down in 15 seconds. To prevent shutdown and continue operation, press the Enter key now.System Fan (90b) I restarted computer, got same message. Proceeded to turn off laptop, then made sure AC power cord and adapter were working fine and plugged in. ( My Adapter block is normally hot, I think this is due to me leaving laptop plugged in all the time and never turning it off.) I restart once more, then head into BIOS. I check that the System Configurations are correct, Fan is automatically turned on, and I check BIOS logs for start up. All came up clear except the past 3 times. They stated part 090-B came up an error. This surely was the fan not being recognizes, as the start up told me. I go searching in the internet for replacement fan. This is the fan I have pruchased [ Replacement Fan ] and the thermal paste I purchased with it [ Thermal Paste ]. I rechecked with friends who work in computer stores for a living and they told me this was the correct part. So I decided I would wait. Today, I was told of an issue with the server, I log in to check the problem, get the error message for the fan. No biggie. I fix the issue within 5 minutes. My laptop was not on long enough to get hot. I get a message for an update today. I figured, sure; not a huge process needer, It will be fine. I let it update, and restart because I know it will need to finish applying them on restart. This time... the fan error did not display. I let the update patch in all 36,000 files. I restart after. I check the BIOS logs, It said no errors. I restart another 2 times to make sure I am not missing the message. There is none. Whether or not my idea is wrong, I will still replace the cooling fan. My question is... Since the BIOS is responsible for how the computer starts, could the update possibly be the reason the error message no longer occurs? with 36,000 files patched, they could have easily been a driver fix and or a BIOS patch. They also could have been a simple security fix, but I have no way or knowing. I know it was 14 updates, and 36,000 files patched. Could this at all have effected the error I was getting? Again, whether or not it could be the solution, I wil lstill replace the fan. I ask for future reference of this knowledge. Could this be a simple mistake in the matter? Should I take into consideration of the update as a fix for the fan? Did it matter at all? EDIT It seems though the error is gone, my processor still seems to be getting hot. This image shhows no sign of the fan working http://i.imgur.com/N1UgmHb.png
Still waiting for someone with more experience then me to explain to me the situation...

I am assuming that it is the fan, as this noise only comes when i start using the a graphic intensive program (Doom 3).
I am worried because it is quite loud and does not sound like the fan noise of my PB. It is similar in quality to a couple of posts in that it terminates in reving up/ down sound. When the sound is present, it is characterised by the "fliping through a deck of cards" or the "card and bike spoke." It is not too harsh, but enough to cause some concern. It is no where near as bad as the grinding sound posted on an earlier thred.
My question(s) are: What did people with smilar problems do and what was the outcome? Is this noise normal? Should I take it to the not so genius bar for an eval?As an update. I wated a while before I sent it in for repairs. during that time the noise continued to increase. I noticed that if I proped the MBP at a 10 degree angle using a small book just underneath the sreen area the sound would go away. So, i did this for a while as I was reluctant to part with my MBP. However, the sound retured, even at any angle. So I called apple teck and the unit was off. it returned to me in 2.5 days completly silent! if you put your ear over the W key, you can only hear a quiet flow-- Perfect!

2015 13 inch rMBP - fan behavior
Hi everyone,
Last week, I picked up a new 2015 13 inch rMBP to replace my aging 2010 MBP. The speed of the new machine is incredible. I opted for the i7/16/512 configuration as I intend to use this for about 4 years or so. I'm using Lightroom for processing my photos among other things. It's SO much faster than my old computer.
Anyway, one thing that I'm trying to determine if is normal behavior is that of the cooling fan. On my previous laptops, when the processor is under load, the fan(s) will slowly speed up to a level that is able to cool the computer properly. Usually, it ramps up slowly until it reaches the right level rarely going to full speed.
However, on my new machine, the fan suddenly goes from silent to high speed. Then it starts ramping down to a normal level. I've never seen this before so I'm wondering if it's normal behavior for the new machines.
The thing is, it doesn't do this every time. Sometimes, the same load will cause the fan to ramp up slowly which is what I would expect. But most of the time, it instantly jumps to high.
There may be nothing wrong at all, but would I'm looking for any thoughts on this as I'm still within my return window for another few days.
Here is a video demonstrating what I'm talking about. For this example, I'm just using LR to build 1:1 previews. The same job on my old machine causes the fan to increase just slightly but nothing like what the new one is doing.
In the video, you can see the fan rpm in the menu bar along the top.
Thanks for your time!
Demonstration video: https://youtu.be/IAkeR3zlYFESince this is a brand new Mac, bring it in to an Apple store genius bar for examination. If you purchased the Mac from Apple (not a reseller) you have 14 days from the date of purchase to exchange it or get a refund.
Ciao. -
I have a 1st gen MBP (never again) and after about a month I took it back for excessive heat.
I was told that the fans were fine, although I never really heard them.
Then, I finally found a widget that told me my left fan was not working at all and then they both went out. (after warranty, of course)
Now, my left fan is working again.
My question is twofold.
Since there is a complaint logged at the Apple store about the fans right after I bought it, will Apple fix it in warranty, and if not, does anyone have an idea of what Apple charges to replace the two fans?Talk to your Apple store or call AppleCare. We have no way to know the answer to your question.
I can guess: A. filing a complaint but not having the computer repaired while in warranty will not mean a thing; B. Ask your Apple service tech. -
Early 2011 MacBook Pro. Two weeks old.
In recent days I've taken notice of the MBP's noise level. It seems that the fans have become a little more noticeable. Nothing too loud or anything, but it's definitely not as whisper quiet as before. The only time when the fans do tend to get a little loud, is when I'm watching a video on the web.
Isn't the standard RPM around 2000? At idle and basic web browsing it seems normal, but once I'm watching any web media, the RPM doubles to almost twice as much (3800 - 4000), according to iStat Pro. Is this normal? I really do not recall the RPM going that high and being able to hear my MBP as noticeably as before.
I have another, perhaps unrelated question. Whenever I pick up my MBP, I sometimes hear a *click* from within the machine itself. What is that?
Thanks.Amster_G wrote:

Yes, that is normal while casually browsing the web.

Yes. I also have an Early 2011 MBP. As for the click, check the screws on the bottom and make sure they are fastened tightly. Sometimes the can come loose. -
Hello everyone, I have a question about my MBP about the noise I once heard when I turned it on. It was on the left speaker side or the fan, thinking that it was the speaker so I mute it and still hearing the hissing or crackling sound
Was going to the apple store and get it check but the sound stopped. What should I do???How long have you had the computer and are you still under warranty? It wouldn't hurt to get it checked out at an Apple store if the machine is still covered..
