MBP fan rattle noise.

Since I last visited the site has had a revamp but I can't seem to find how to search the forum?
Anyhow I have a problem with my MBP in which I can hear the right fan making a 'rub/click' type rattle noise. It isn't very high RPM perhaps 200-300 RPM judging by per second rate.
When I hold the MBP and tilt the base to different angles the sound varies from clicks to rubs.
I've already had the left fan repaired last year and it appears the same problem is now affecting the right fan.
It sounds like a little air compressor is working and its at a barely tolerable threshold. Problem is I'm sick of taking this machine in. It's had a total of 6 repairs now and I'm pretty sick of it.
Any suggestions? And how do I search the discussions?

It does sound like the other fan's gone, my right fan went a week after the left one ...

  • Rattling noise MBP 15" late 2013

    Hi all,
I noted that my MBP 15" retina late 2013 (2.6Ghz and 1TB) produces a rattling-like noise on both sides close to the speakers. It can be heard only by taking the ear close to the speakers and not in a normal working position. I thought it to be related to fans (left noise being slightly higher than right) but when I ran the Apple Diagnostic test and fans strated spinning faster, the rattling noise did not increase in frequency but looked to be always there in background at same tonality (masked by the blowing one though). Can you please check if a similar noise exists on your models too? I tried on an early MBP of a frined of mine but it is fully silent. I received it on last FRiday --> still in time for an exchange but it would be the 3rd one, the first having dead pixels on the screen.
Thank you for your help and advice please.
    Emanuele

Correction: I ran another test and the noise frequency changes with the fans speed....the noise is there and slightly audible if getting as close as 10cm to the keyboard.....

  • CPU FAN MAKING RATTLING NOISE - HP Pavilion dv7-3065dx Notebook

My CPU fan has begun to make a rattling noise.  I have cleaned the vent out with compressed air, but that did not help.  Can anyone help me find the correct part # for the fan and also the correct service manual?  I have found 2 or 3 which seem close, but not sure which one is correct.

  • MBP fan noise

Hello everyone, I have a question about my MBP about the noise I once heard when I turned it on. It was on the left speaker side or the fan, thinking that it was the speaker so I mute it and still hearing the hissing or crackling sound
Was going to the apple store and get it check but the sound stopped. What should I do???

How long have you had the computer and are you still under warranty? It wouldn't hurt to get it checked out at an Apple store if the machine is still covered..

  • MBP, unusual rattling sound

    Hi everybody.
I own a 15-inch macbook pro (the first ever to come under this name:2.0 gig Intel core , 2 gig of ram-full...etc.) and 2 days ago, something bizarre occurred: I had my MBP running for something like 10 hrs or so (with occasional breaks, as in letting it go to sleep etc..). Suddenly a rattling noise started coming out from the right hand side of the keyboard (its source seems to be near by the power button). I turned off the computer, thought I should give it a break let the fan(s) rest. I turned it on today and the same rattling sound kept on going and its still present (though quieter than before)...It would be well helpful if somebody could inform me as to why my computer produces this irritating sound. I am still new to all this technology. It would be well appreciated.
    thanks in advance.

Try running AHT by booting from its original, grey Applications Install DVD.
From Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support:
Using Apple Hardware Test on computers with OS X v10.7 and earlier
AHT is located on the Applications Install Disc 2 and should be included with your computer or the MacBook Air Software Reinstall Drive on a MacBook Air (Late 2010). To start AHT on these computers make sure the Applications Install Disc 2 is inserted into the built-in optical drive, external Apple Superdrive, or for the MacBook Air (Late 2010) be sure the MacBook Air Software Reinstall Drive is inserted into a USB port. Then, follow steps 1-6 outlined in the previous section of this article.
The error code you describe is not publicly documented. The version of AHT on the Applications Install DVD may be more informative. It will run the fans at maximum RPM. If one of them does not work, it should tell you.
A rattling sound is almost certainly caused by the fan, but I do not trust "FanControl" or anything other than AHT to report accurate test results.

  • Is MBP Fans always on?

well, I have notice while the room is empty and quit that the MBP Fans working so I got curious
I closed every application and Fans still working...
I restarted the OS and no application is running, still Fans working at 1999-2000 rpm
is that normal the Fans always working in no matter what condition the MBP is in?

The fans are on continuously to cool the Intel microprocessor and other components. If they weren't always "on", your machine would burn up by the heat created from the Intel chip. There are thermal detectors in your machine monitoring the components and controlling the speed of the fans. Therefore, on a hot day you'll probably notice the fan noise more; and on a cool day, less so.

  • Loud clicking/rattling noise every 5 seconds

My MacBook Air makes a loud clicking or rattling noise exactly every 5 seconds. It originates from the bottom of the MacBook, approximately somewhere behind the "P" key. The noise sounds just like a broken clicking hard drive except that I have the SOLID STATE DRIVE MacBook! I'm thinking it might be a fan issue. What is causing this noise and how do I fix it?
The noise is very loud, in the video below you can listen to it if you turn up your volume.
    http://www.tokbox.com/vm/xa9bk58b1hr4
Can I bring the MacBook Air to an Apple store, and can they fix it on the spot by swapping out the broken fan or whatever it is?

I had the exact same problem; my new MBA made the noise right out of the box. Sounded like it was snoring. Rather discouraging, this being my very first mac. BUT, I think I fixed it.
I downloaded istat, and noticed that the exhaust fan RPM was 0. So, the problem seemed to be that the fan was "stuck." And, I know this sounds awful and wrong, but I gave my machine a sharp little rap just under the power key, to the right of the delete/slash/return keys. Just a soft knock, using the section of my index finger I'd use to show a child how long an inch is. The snoring went away immediately, and the fan speed went up to roughly 2490rpm.
Seems like a stupid manufacturing glitch, which I REALLY don't feel like dealing with after dropping a few thousand on this machine. But the fix was easy enough.

  • Mac Mini fan rattle

I recently purchased a Mac Mini, and when I first got it, the fan was a quiet blowing noise, but now the fan rattles and whines constantly. What should I do?

    Take it back?

  • Re: Upon startup there is a loud rattling noise.

Whenever I start up or wake my macbook pro for around 5 minutes I hear a lour rattling noise. (almost like a gurgling)  Fans/disk sound normal otherwise, only on startup or waking from sleep?? My applecare ran out yesterday, it's like it knows and it programed to break down today. If anyone could help I would appreciate it.

That sounds like a fan going bad. It could be it's just clogged up with dirt, which you may be able to clean by taking off the bottom cover. All you need to get that off is a small Phillips screwdriver. You can also try the Genius Bar. Apple is pretty strict on warranty coverage, but they might help you on something like this since you're so close. All you can do is try.

  • IMac rattling noise?

I've had a rattling noise coming from the bottom right side (if you're looking at the screen) ever since I got my iMac. I brought it to the apple store when it first started and they replaced the optical fan. This helped the problem for about a day and then it started again. I went back to the apple store and they couldn't hear the noise so nothing was done. I have been having this problem ever since.
I really don't know what to do anymore. The closest apple store is 2 hours away so I hate to make another trip there only for them to tell me they can't hear the noise. Sometimes it is louder than others. It doesn't sound like a normal fan noise like if the machine was heating up. It almost sounds like something is loose and is rattling or a cord is being hit by the fan.
    Any suggestions?
(I have a 20" aluminum iMac... got it last September so I think it's the 2009 model?)

You have a bad optical drive fan motor. Replace that and it should be fine.

  • GS60 Ghost Pro GPU fan rattle

    Hi there
I had my GS60 Ghost Pro (2E-056AU) for around 5 months now and am generally very happy with it. However, recently there has been a rattling noise coming from the GPU fan (left side) whenever the GPU is in use. Has anybody else had this problem? Is there a trick how to fix it by myself?
    Thanks for your support!

sounds like your GPU fan is defected or layer in fan is begining to wear off which means you will have to send laptop into repair and have fan exchanged to new one.

  • Iphone 5 makes a rattling noise from day 1, the replacement also makes this similar noise. customer care can provide me with another replacement but can not promise if the new replacement will have this noise or not. can i get a refund ?

my iphone 5 from day one makes a rattling noise when you shake the device.
the replacement i recieved also makes the similar rattling noise, apple calls it a "common problem" and says its the autofocus of the camera which makes the noise, but people i know are not experiencing any such noise in their evices, hence its not their in all the iphone.
honestly investing Rs 45000 in india i dont expect my device to have a stupid defect as this one,
In my latest conversation i have had with a senior representative of apple care iv been given an option to have anpther replacement but they cant promise me that the new replacemnt will have no such rattling noise it might be even worse.
since apple cant promise me a replacement without any such noise and my device is not even 90 days old, and since apple calls it a common problem in iphone5 is it possible that they give me replacement of 5c or 5s and il pay the difference in price or just have a refund ? since they cant provide me with a solution and keeping this device with this defect is not a solution with me.

Sorry if it's over 14 days apple does not refund the device, just sit tight and keep on asking for a device that doesn't rattle, be firm but polite about your position on the matter.
    Politeness works wonders

  • There is a rattling noise at the top of my iphone5.do anyone have a suggestion to fix this issue.?

Please help me to fix this issue as i cant adjust with this rattling noise at the top when i share my phone

We're talking about the shortcuts you can add to the top of a Finder window, which occasionally get unlinked and turn into question marks. What are you talking about?

  • I hear a rattling noise from my iPhone 5i f I shake it slightly.

i hear a rattling noise from my iPhone 5i f I shake it slightly. This is a replaced handset, the previous iphone also had a flaw. The people at apple say that it is normal but there was no such noise in the previous one

I would recommend an Apple Store visit because you should hear nothing when you shake an iphone, they are build with little to no moving parts and more than likely that sound is from a hardware defect.

  • Fan issues - noise unberable - mbpr

    Hello,
I'm having serious problem with fan speed/noise. Without any hard CPU usage (less then 20%), CPU die - digital is always very high and, I suppose, put the fans so high that the noise is unbearable.
I already bring my mbpr at the apple store, SMC reset ran twice and the Hardware test gave no error. They recommend me to change my 2 fans (around 90$) but it did not resolve the noise issues...
